Summary
“Being happy isn’t about coming in and having a laugh every day. It’s about working hard and being the best you can be. It’s about realising all the dreams and ambitions you had as a kid – and that’s the environment I want.”
Ange Postecoglou
“This is definitely a good group, a close group, and they have good leaders in the dressing room. They all appreciate that they are part of a special football club. They should have a smile on their face as they are living their dreams.”
Ange Postecoglou
“We created some good opportunities we couldn’t take and they couldn’t really threaten – so, overall it was solid.”
Ange Postecoglou
Liam Kelly: Our final ball was poor a lot of times today and 2nd half was quite flat from us, but it should have been 3 or 4 at half time and the win was the main thing. We can and will play a lot better in the weeks ahead
Nicklad of KDS:
Just in from the long walk back with a wee stop at the International Bar in Polmadie. Made it back ahead of their bus – can’t believe they are driving to the ground from there haha.
PREMATCH: a look back at some of the great Celtic overhead kick goals of all time (spoiler – they were all Giakoumakis).
MATCH: Take a pretty different view to a lot of what I read here.
Thought the game shone a light on some of our frailties way more than even Robbie Neilson would have thought possible.
I thought the main problems in the first 45 were that – apart from the goal – the front 3 were nowhere near sharp enough and that at the back some doubts were starting to emerge about Moritz Jenz.
Thought we were just about OK in midfield though by the end of the game you were a bit worried about exactly where David Turnbull is going (as a couple of others has said). Both Hatate and Mooy showed enough signs to suggest that DT will be 5th in the pecking order at best this season.
2nd half – Incredible that Hearts were still wasting time while enjoying a lot of position from minute 45 til about 70. They hardly saw the ball in the last 10. Idiots.
Main thought was that you wouldn’t want to see a CCV and Jenz partnership come up against much better quality than the Jambo curtain jerkers on display today.
I like CCV a lot but not sure exactly what type sits best alongside him. Ange had Welsh ahead of Jenz v Aberdeen but now Jenz has leapfrogged Welsh and Starfelt. I think a CH who could take over from Starfelt should have been our transfer window priority but I think as it stands we’re left with 3 flawed options. Wouldn’t want to see what we looked like if – God forbid – CCV was injured or suspended.
Couldn’t believe Kyogo was stadium MotM and I feel that we are getting closer and closer to the day when GG becomes our first choice central striker. I’m kind of hoping both he and Starfelt start at Tannadice so they can be viable options for 03/09.
We have a huge chance to come out of that game 5 ahead and we have to grab it.

Celtic’s apparent toils over nine-man Hearts contribute to deceptive day
All was far from it might superficially appear in digesting Celtic – by their manager’s admission – grinding out a 2-0 victory over Hearts.

HAVE YOUR SAY
It was a strange sort of afternoon in Glasgow’s east end as Ange Postecoglou’s men racked up their 36th league game without defeat – to equal the Australian’s best run in his near quarter-of-a-century coaching career, which he accomplished 11 years ago with Brisbane Roar. Celtic weren’t seriously troubled by their visitors even if their levels seriously dropped off following the interval. Equally, though, Hearts manager Robbie Neilson wasn’t guilty of going overboard in commending a side he extensively rejigged – with an “eye” on their Europa League play-off decider on Thursday, he confessed – for staying in the contest. He did push it, mind you, in attempting to forward the notion that, but for referee Kevin Clancy being one-eyed to send off Alex Cochrane and Toby Sibbick for second bookable offences a minute apart as the full 90 rolled around, the outcome could have been altogether different. Never mind that the four cautions to see the pair brandished reds were all justified.
As it was, not until substitute Giorgos Giakmoukais scruffily – he loves that sort of goal – forced over a Josip Juranovic right wing cross in the fourth minute of added time were the points absolutely safe for Celtic. But, before then only three fine stops from keeper Ross Stewart prevented the scoreline being as one-sided as the possession stats. The keeper, in a rare start, didn’t have the club’s faithful pining for Craig Gordon, rested with a back spasm before he is dusted down for the Gorgie assignment against Zurich wherein a 2-1 deficit will require to be overturned. Quite a feather in the cap for
There are many of these for Celtic through them having now won 20 and drawn three of their past 23 league home encounters. A few weeks short of a year without defeat in the top flight, even when lacking fluency, across the first period they were able to reduce the – an admittedly understrength – third best team in Scotland to bystanders. The home team should have had the contest wrapped up in that spell, but it was almost as if they weren’t so fussed about any missed openings in harbouring the belief others would present themselves before long.
That wasn’t the case with the destructive move that put them ahead in 13 minutes, it must be said. For it, David Turnbull darted forward and played the ball out to Daizen Maeda on the right. The Japanese attacker then shrugged off Alex Cochrane as if he wasn’t there before delivering an artful cross that Kyogo Furuhashi, with utter nonchalance, clipped in. A third goal in as many games, it was unforgivable that the predator found himself alone in the six yard box. The walkies that resulted in centre-backs Kye Rowles and Sibbick being completely out of the picture for the strike proved costly for Hearts.
Ultimately – and privately – Neilson will be content his team didn’t receive a beating as he kept such as Lawrence Shankland, Barrie McKay – second half substitutes – and Gordon essentially fresh for Hearts’ most important game this week. And Celtic will be satisfied that, even when far from at their best, there is growing evidence that precious few teams on the domestic scene will be able to take advantage. A month in, and there have been no signs of faltering. As already cannot be said of any other team in the top flight.

Celtic are “close” to completing a deal for Sead Haksabanovic, manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed, after his side overcame an awkward test against Hearts to move two points clear at the Scottish Premiership summit.
The hosts capitalised on Rangers’ draw at Hibernian, with Kygo Furhashi netting the opener before Giorgos Giakoumakis’ goal in the final seconds.
Hearts improved after the break, but had no shots on target and ended with nine men after second yellows for Alex Cochrane and Toby Sibbick late on.
Celtic maintained their perfect start with a fourth straight victory, and are set to bolster their squad with the signing of 23-year-old Montenegro winger Haksabanovic, who is seeking to leave Russian side Rubin Kazan.
“Yeah, I think that’s a fair assessment – it’s getting close,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports of a potential deal.
Hearts, whose line-up reflected the importance of their looming Europa League play-off second leg with FC Zurich, lost for the first time in the league this season.
Podcast: ‘Celtic were slack but Hearts deserve credit’
Reaction & as it happened
Craig Gordon, Barrie McKay and Lawrence Shankland were among the key players rested as Hearts boss Robbie Neilson made seven changes from the 2-1 first-leg defeat in Switzerland.
But even accounting for the upheaval, the visitors’ defending was dire as they fell behind in the opening 15 minutes.
Kyogo was left all alone six yards out to volley past stand-in goalkeeper Ross Stewart after Daizen Maeda wriggled clear of Cochrane and whipped over a cross from the right.
Hearts regrouped and manfully prevented further damage before the break, with Jota lashing into the side-netting, Matt O’Riley knocking an acrobatic effort wide and Maeda wastefully planting a header into Stewart’s arms from close range.
Hearts were too often hurried in possession, but cut Celtic open when neat interplay in midfield allowed Gary Mackay-Steven to spring Josh Ginnelly clear, only for the winger to drag wide.
The visitors’ belief blossomed as Celtic started the second half in sloppy fashion. Ginnelly screwed another effort wide while Sibbick was unable to connect with Alan Forrest’s tempting ball across the face of goal.
Yet Hearts were unable to trouble goalkeeper Joe Hart, even after throwing on McKay and Shankland for the final half hour.
Celtic’s search for a second goal was thwarted by Stewart’s fine save from O’Riley, with substitute Hatate bundling the rebound a foot past. But Giakoumakis finally found a way through when he bundled in Josip Juranovic’s fizzed delivery.
While Celtic’s flawless start continues, they made hard work of overcoming a patchwork Hearts side.
The hosts allowed slackness to seep into their play in the second half, with loose passes and careless possession giving their visitors a foothold.
Still, Celtic’s defensive solidity saw them through the rocky patch, with a third clean sheet secured while restricting the visitors to a meagre XG (expected goals) of 0.15.
At the other end, Celtic created more than enough chances to make the game safe long before Giakoumakis’ goal. Having come off the bench to net in successive games, has the Greece striker earned a start next weekend?
One look at the Hearts teamsheet showed Neilson’s priorities this week clearly lie elsewhere, with the manager taking no risks on his main men amid various bumps and bruises.
The early concession could have opened the floodgates, but Hearts dug in impressively and knocked Celtic off their stride after the break.
However, they were bereft of cutting edge and their set-piece deliveries lacked quality as the Edinburgh men’s plucky efforts came to nothing.
What did they say?
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It was a game where there was no real flow to it. It was very stop-start, hard to get real tempo. Some of it was our own doing.
“Through that, we still maintained control and even though it was 1-0 for a long time, I never felt threatened. Their keeper pulled off two or three good games to keep them in the game.”
Hearts manager Robbie Neilson: “I was pleased with the players that came in. We don’t have a big squad but we’ve got real quality in the depth of the squad.
“For large periods of the game we played well. Until the referee sends two of our players off, we’re still in the game and we’re in a good position.”
