Summary
“If you use the result of a game as a backdrop to question everything you do then you’ll go nuts in this game.”
Ange Postecoglou on the last match (Celtic lost to St Mirren)
Celtic recovered to win 2-1 and asked if there was a breakdown in communication between Hart and Juranovic, manager Postecoglou said:
“Totally. There was no one else around them. But these things happen in football, you kind of know. Invariably, they happen in a game like today. They never happen when you’re four or five up. But they’re human beings, mate. As much as I’d love to control them like that FIFA stuff, you let them be human beings who are going to make mistakes. The important thing is that we recovered from that and we got our goal. It was important to win today. After a loss you’ve got to get back into winning ways as quickly as possible. So from that perspective it was an important three points.”
JBCity of TheCelticWiki:
Hardly Celtic’s best performance this season but it’s three points on the board.
The conceded goal was one of those odd goals that can happen once in a while (Hart & Juranovic mix-up).
Also a penalty not given which should have been given to Celtic!
and as for the red card? Not everyone is arguing against it but can be argued that as Celtic had a covering player, then shouldn’t have been a straight red. Hatate’s error with the passback late in the game when all we had to do was retain possession.
RS of KDS:
A very nervy but deserved win. Missing sitters will put any team under pressure. No tempo to our play again and most of the team miles off it starting with the goalkeeper.
Hatate goal was a belter but his pass back was a shocker and left McGregor with no option but to foul the guy. It was a red. No complaints.
We need CCV back pronto.
Hatate was motm by the proverbial. Very few others even got passmarks.
Elpariso of KDS:
Thought our performance was typical of our home league form. We didn’t exactly blow away Aberdeen or Hearts, and but for that comedy own goal the result would have been the same. We actually presented Motherwell with fewer opportunities than we gave the opposition in those other games.
We were hardly rotten throughout and actually had some good passages of play and excellent moments. It’s just that they came in between periods where we were typically sloppy with our passing, or missing sitters. Welsh is getting a hard time, but I don’t think he was our worst performer today. Overall it was frustrating in many respects, but I’ll take the win, especially with the nervy last few minutes.
Regards our “penalty”, at first glance the ball seems to come off the outstretched right hand, but I’m not so sure it didn’t actually come off his left elbow, which is close to his side. That’s what I thought I saw at the game. Would need a clearer picture in slo-mo to be sure.
ETims:
Spark missing and we looked tired mentally and physically out there.. Ange might need to consider more frequent changes to get full squad personnel up to constant speed as cant drain much more from current First team on this showing after heavy international schedule.
VideoCelts:
State censorship- watch the Celtic penalty decision that BBC Sportscene decided not to analyse
BBC Scotland opted out of analysing Celtic’s penalty claim against Motherwell on Sportscene last night.
It was barely a claim, it was a very obvious handball, it had ramifications for the rest of the match but the state broadcaster/censor decided that they didn’t want to take a closer look at the incompetence of John Beaton.
Having re-established their lead, going 3-1 up would have made all the difference to Ange Postecoglou’s side after a choppy first hour of the game.
Callum McGregor’s quick throw in was anticipated by Liel Abada, his cross was also anticipated by Ricki Lamie who raised his right hand to block the ball in full view of Beaton and his assistant. Neither of them signalled for a penalty.
Going into the final 10 minutes Motherwell drew confidence, a goal behind and with the bonus of a full compliment of players after Lamie had escaped with the defender already been booked for pushing Kyogo Furuhashi to the ground after losing a throw-in.
In the 89th minute a misplace pass from Reo Hatate gave substitute Louis Moult a chance of scoring 35 yards from goal. Callum McGregor bundled the striker over, Beaton’s sight was restored, the Celtic captain was sent off and five minutes of stoppage time was played.
Ange Postecoglou wasn’t asked about the penalty incident in any of his post-match interviews.
Fortunately social media captured and shared the incident, among Celtic fans it was the biggest talking point after the match, but not for viewers of the state broadcaster.

Celtic reaction: Issue with finishing, nice nod to Coolio, sub-standard player ratings

We give three takeaways from Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Motherwell in the cinch Premiership …

Let’s get clinical
While Ange Postecoglou was perhaps a little charitable when commenting on Celtic’s performance, which was below the standard so often set by the champions, he did mention the fact the team are not being as clinical as usual. “We had good chances, we usually are pretty good at putting away,” said Postecoglou. “We just lacked that clinical edge we usually have. It doesn’t reflect our dominance in the game.” The Australian is absolutely right, some of the misses from Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota were uncharacteristic. While Josip Juranovic and Reo Hatate were unlucky to hit the woodwork, other spurned opportunities cannot become more common. Better teams than Motherwell would have punished the profligacy and with a lot on the line both domestically and on the continent this month, better finishing in and around the penalty box is required going forward.
A debut for Abildgaard
He may have only been on the pitch from 89 minutes onwards, but Oliver Abildgaard – a deadline-day signing from Rubin Kazan last month, finally made his Celtic debut. The 26-year-old Dane – a holding midfielder – appeared after Callum McGregor’s red card. It appears Aaron Mooy is ahead of him in the pecking order but it will be interesting to see who Postecoglou replaces his captain with next weekend when they face St Johnstone without the suspended Scotland internationalist.
Coolio tribute
The music world lost one of it’s recent icons in Coolio this week after the American rapper died aged 59. His passing brought back memories of when Artis Leon Ivey Junior, to give him his full name, made a surprise visit to Celtic Park in 2017 for a match against Hibs. At half-time against Motherwell, the PA burst into life with Gangsta’s Paradise, the artist’s most famous song. From one paradise to another, someone in the press box remarked.
Celtic player ratings: Hart 5, Juranovic 5, Welsh 5, Jenz 6, Taylor 6, O’Riley 7 (Turnbull 3), McGregor 5, Hatate 7 (Abildgaard n/a), Maeda 5 (Abada 3), Furuhashi 6 (Haksabanovic n/a), Jota 7 (Mooy n/a).
Motherwell player ratings: Kelly 6, McGinn 5, Johansen 5, Lamie 5, Penney 5, Maguire 5, Goss 6 (Morris n/a), Shields 6, Cornelius 5 (McKinstry 3), Spittal 6 (Tierney 3), Van Veen 5 (Moult 3).
Why Celtic’s winning goal was particularly frustrating for Motherwell boss Stephen Hammell
Motherwell manager Steven Hammell lamented Reo Hatate’s winning goal as his team went down narrowly 2-1 to Celtic.

The Japanese midfielder scored what proved to be the clinching strike on 64 minutes from a corner routine, Jota passing the ball into space just outside the box and finding Hatate in space to fire the ball beyond Liam Kelly.
Hammell said that he had pointed out Celtic’s corner routine to his players in the build-up to the match and, despite being proud of his players’ efforts, wished that they had been able to snuff out Celtic’s set-piece routine.
“It’s something we’d highlighted,” Hammell said of the goal. “It’s a corner routine that they do – they’ll take two out and miss one and hit that space at the edge of the box. We’ve showed it – they’ve done it quickly, which they’ve showed, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to us. He’s got to score from 25 yards, which is difficult, but that’s the difference, the big moments in the game.”
On the match itself, Hammell continued: “I felt especially in the latter part of the game we posed some threats there, but in the big moments and the fine details and the fine chances when you come to places like this need to be better. I feel that that was the difference.
“They were hanging on, they saw the game out well, they were clever. As much as we know they return the ball to play quick, that was mirrored slowly towards the end, but it shows you where we were at and where they were at at that stage of the game.
“Ultimately though, again it has been an acceptable performance without resulting in any points unfortunately.”
‘He only came out of university at 22 but will go back into sheds’: Ange Postecoglou explains evolution of his new Celtic talisman
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou hailed the evolution of his midfielder Reo Hatate – but said he “will go back into the sheds” after beating himself up over a slack pass that led to Callum McGregor’s red card in the 2-1 win over Motherwell.

The 24-year-old fired home the winning goal from outside the penalty box after a corner-kick routine on an afternoon when Celtic struggled to kill off their visitors.
A bizarre own goal from Josip Juranovic cancelled out Kyogo Furuhashi’s opener and Celtic ended the match with ten men after McGregor hauled down Ross Tierney when through on goal following Hatate’s misplaced pass.
Nevertheless, Postecoglou was impressed with his player’s efforts.
“He was good today,” said the manager. “He was unlucky first half with his strike as well [that hit the post].
“Reo’s developing well, he’s a player who has still got a hell of a lot of potential.
“I try to explain to people his background, like a lot of Japanese players he only came out of university at 22. He’s only really been a professional footballer for three-odd years.
“So, I kind of knew after the impact he had in his first year as a professional that if it was his base line he was going to improve.”
On the red-card incident, Postecoglou revealed: “He’s pretty hard on himself, he pushes himself, he wants to be better.
“So, there’s a lot more to come.
“He’ll be disappointed with his pass late today which sort of created the red-card situation.
“So, he’ll go back in the sheds and think of how he can better.
“But Reo’s got great potential and he was good today.”
On the match itself, Postecoglou commented: “It should’ve been a lot more comfortable than it was.
“We started well and first half we created some really good opportunities.
“But we had good chances, we usually are pretty good at putting away. We just lacked that clinical edge, we usually have it.
“It doesn’t reflect our dominance in the game.
“We give them a goal which gives them some encouragement and then we had to work hard second half.”

Funnily enough, I thought the game reflected the weather yesterday – generally quite good but with a few squalls. The main thing about yesterday was that we won three points generally through hard graft against a hard working Motherwell team.
It was not a game that will live long in anyone’s memory, but it is the sort of game that one needs to win, if one is to win the League. We have given several thrashings this season to various opponents, but this was not one of them. I was glad to hear the final whistle.

The first half saw some excellent football from Celtic with one good goal and a few more chances that were sheer hard luck, and a penalty claim that I didn’t think was entirely out of the question. We were just thinking that Motherwell were never likely to score a goal, when, lo and behold, we did it for them! It was one of the craziest of own goals that you are ever likely to see, and although it is very possible to allocate blame to one man or other, all that it really needed was a stentorian cry of “Mine!”
And so half time which might have been spent in relaxation and luxury, was spent in anxiety and suspense with everyone saying things like “You’ve got to score when you are on top” and “Accidents will happen”, and then Celtic took a long time to get going again – until Hatate scored his magnificent goal.

It wasn’t the easiest game to watch until the final whistle, especially after Callum McGregor got the red card, but full time came, and we are still two points ahead of our rivals with 30 games to go.
The central defensive pairing was not the first choice and it showed. I have always liked Stephen Welsh but today he was hesitant with his ball distribution nothing like satisfactory. Jenz was OK, but you always felt that he and Welsh might have struggled against a sharper set of forwards than those of Motherwell.

Callum McGregor, until his early departure, was superb, while Jota was good in the first half but faded a little in the second. Kyogu was not at his best and missed some chances which might have gone in on another day. When David Turnbull came on, he looked the part, but no sooner did I say that to my neighbour than he suddenly played a couple of dreadful balls to a Motherwell player!
Some other players were still recovering from their International exertions, but we limped over the line and three points are in the bag. It was nice to see Oliver Abildgaard, and we look forward to seeing more of him.
I have long ago stopped feeling guilty about narrow victories, because I have seen so many games where Celtic have played superbly and have left with nothing. Three points are three points, and it is good to bounce back from the awful performance against St Mirren in our last game.

The atmosphere was good throughout with a few topical chants about the Royal Family which show the world that not everyone loves slavery, and it was nice to see the ground so full.
The refereeing was questionable at several points. The red card to the blessed Callum was probably justified (in the terms of the letter of the law at least) but there was an incident in the first half involving Motherwell’s number four which might well have been interpreted as violent conduct, and two penalties at least might just have been given to Celtic, but it was never a dirty game.
We had better get used to Motherwell because we have another two games against them, both at Fir Park, before football stops again for the World Cup.
Off to Leipzig now in midweek, a team that we don’t know all that much about. A draw there might not be the worst result in the world, but then we have St Johnstone at Perth which we really have to win. A lot of football has to be played in October.

Reo Hatate’s fantastic strike ensured Celtic got an “important” win against Motherwell to bounce back from their first Scottish Premiership defeat in a year, manager Ange Postecoglou says.
The Japanese midfielder found the bottom corner from 25 yards out to ease growing tension at Celtic Park, despite Callum McGregor’s late red card.
Motherwell had threatened to get a result after Josip Juranovic’s own goal brought them level following Kyogo Furuhashi’s early opener, but Celtic’s win took them back into top spot.
Reaction & as it happened
Postecoglou’s side are two points clear of Rangers again having had their seamless start to the season – and 38-game unbeaten run in the Premiership – ended by St Mirren before the international break.
“It’s not significant, but it is important, especially when you’ve lost your previous game,” he told BBC Scotland. “You don’t want to get in that rut where you make things difficult for yourself.
“We certainly created enough chances to win the game more comfortably than we did – and a couple of self-inflicted wounds probably made it closer than it should have been.”
Still missing first-choice defenders Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt through injury, Celtic’s moments of vulnerability were certainly exposed at times against a well-drilled Motherwell side.
That was typified by the visitors’ equaliser, when right-back Juranovic and goalkeeper Joe Hart failed to communicate properly, resulting in the Croat sending a harmless cross into an empty net with his chest.
Crosses and set-pieces were not always dealt with convincingly, but ultimately Celtic had plenty of chances to win the match more comfortably.
Kyogo put them in front after 15 minutes by following in after Matt O’Riley’s header was saved by Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly – and the Japanese striker also headed wide twice from close range.
Before his mistake, Juranovic had cracked the bar with a free-kick while later flashing two efforts just over.
Hatate also had another wonderful effort in the first half that came off a post before executing superbly after the break to ultimately clinch the game.
Motherwell performed as effectively as any Scottish side has at Celtic Park this season, but while they worked the ball into good positions, they were unable to create enough goalscoring opportunities.
That was until Hatate’s wayward pass into his own half allowed Ross Tierney to intercept and run towards goal, forcing McGregor to haul the Motherwell midfielder down.
Referee John Beaton decided the Celtic captain had denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, but it proved fruitless for Motherwell as substitute Josh Morris blazed the resulting free-kick over.
Player of the match – Reo Hatate
Reo Hatate dribbles the ball for Celtic
Despite the poor backpass which led to McGregor’s sending off, Reo Hatate was still Celtic’s most influential player in the final third
Unconvincing Celtic get job done – analysis
This was not a barnstorming response to defeat by St Mirren, but Celtic did what was needed. The reality is the absence of both Carter-Vickers and Starfelt in central defence makes them vulnerable, particularly from balls into the box.
Fortunately for Celtic, Carter-Vickers could be available for Wednesday’s Champions League tie against RB Leipzig, because the pairing of Moritz Jenz and Stephen Welsh has been very unconvincing, albeit in just two matches.
Having said that, this was not a case of two players letting the team down. Celtic still created plenty of opportunities, but what was missing was the overall sense of complete control, of smothering the visiting team.
Those are the standards Celtic have set this season. Part of the credit for that has to go to Motherwell, who were well organised in hassling their hosts and also effective at playing out at times to cause problems.
Manager Steven Hammell really has transformed the way the team plays for the better, but they struggled to create high-quality chances. That’s now three games without a Motherwell player scoring – and four without a win in the league. Their expected goals (xG) rating in this game was just 0.29.
Nevertheless, there are positives to take.
What they said
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “In the first-half, they didn’t really threaten us and we had some good chances. When you give them a goal, it keeps them in the game and gives them encouragement.
“But I thought we handled it not too bad, but we just lacked the cutting edge we’ve shown so far.”
Motherwell manager Steven Hammell: “The overriding feeling is frustration. It’s a game we could have got something out of. Celtic had some chances, but we did also.
“The message before the game was to come here and conduct ourselves well and come away with something. I think the way the game played out, we could have done that.”
