- So many out injured inc CCV, Starfelt and Mooy.
- McGregor goes off with what looks like a bad injury. Leipzig player Péter Gulácsi suffered a serious knee injury in the 10th minute, sustained an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his right knee and will be out for a lengthy period of time.
- Abada pulled out because of religious reasons with the fixture coinciding with Yom Kipper which includes a 25-hour fast
- Irish bars in Liverpool advised to remove the Irish tricolours off their buildings ahead of the Liverpool v Sevco! “So, so glad we no longer have to pretend to like Rangers because Steven Gerrard was there.” @anfieldedition.
- Sevco lost two nil. Sevco have now conceded more penalties in 3 games in the champions league than they have since they were promoted into the SPFL. But honestly, the refereeing is completely impartial in Scotland! Conceded just 2 penalties in 18 months in the Scottish Premiership.

Italiabhoy of KDS:
Played quite well first half, deserved our equaliser, after that fell apart to be honest.
The first goal is laughable. An atrocious touch by MacGregor on the edge of their box and 5 seconds later they score. That’s the kind of goal under-11 teams concede.
Second is just calamatous. Totally ridiculous from Hart who has been threatening to do that for quite some time.
Does any club concede as many stupid goals in Europe as us?
Fundamentally, if we are going to play this system in the CL we need much, much better players all over the pitch. For all Ange gets plaudits, his team were totally outclassed there.
Pass marks: Welsh (did well considering we were all expecting him to make a mess of it); Taylor (thankless task against their winger, stuck to it); Abilgaard (must have felt he was joining the defenders of the Alamo) and Maeda (never stopped, provided decent out ball). Jota decent in flashes too.
Need to win next week.

@retroceltic: If I was a neutral, I’d say that was a great game of football.
@tokinjester: Celtic have in the past played more conservatively away in the CL and still been cuffed…and never made anything like the amount of chances. Last thing we want is to be like rangers in the CL playing for a low scoring defeat and going out with a whimper @clydessb
JBCity of TheCelticWiki: Coolest moment after Leipzig v Celtic match: bumped into a local when walking out the ground and so in congratulated him on his team’s win. He laughed and said he was supporting Celtic! He’s from Leipzig and admitted hating everything RB Leipzig stand for!
@CelticGossip · Oct 6 We are sometimes harsher on our own than we should be. I felt that while many players didn’t perform as they should have last night, Stephen Welsh didn’t do much wrong and has potential for the future. HH
@Boyle_67 Miss a handful of good chances get caught on the break go 1 nil down then lose your captain to injury, the most Celtic 45 minutes away in Europe I’ve ever clapped eyes on that.

Postecoglou challenges Celtic to make their mark on Champions League
Celtic have suffered their second Champions League defeat of the season in a 3-1 defeat to RB Leipzig in Germany.
A goal from Jota at the start of the second half cancelled out Christopher Nkunku’s opener in the first 45 before a Silva double won the game for the Bundesliga side.
Leipzig also had two goals chopped off by VAR in what turned out to be a tough night for the Scottish champions despite a promising opening hour on Wednesday.
The Hoops are now bottom of Group F following the defeat, but all hope is not lost with back-to-back home games up next.
If group favourites and European champions Real Madrid win their next three games, Celtic will qualify for the knockout stages with wins over Leipzig and Shakhtar in Glasgow.

Celtic travelled to Germany in third place with one point from their opening two games after a home defeat to Real Madrid and away draw with Shakhtar Donetsk.
RB Leipzig were still looking for their first point after back-to-back defeats against the same opponents.

Celebrations: Celtic star Jota made it 1-1 in the second half.
Both teams had early half chances in a frantic opening five minutes and Leipzig were forced into a change just ten minutes into the half when their goalkeeper and captain Peter Gulasci was taken off injured.
The hosts thought they had opened the scoring through highly rated forward Christopher Nkunku on the 17th minute.
The 24-year-old raced through on goal and chipped the ball over Joe Hart, but it was found to be marginally offside after a VAR check.
Celtic then had their own period of pressure and forced two corners before a left footed shot from Greg Taylor was well saved by replacement keeper Janis Blaswich.

Kyogo then had a chance from inside the box, but his shot was deflected for a third corner in quick succession.

But just as Celtic were looking like they were getting a grip of the game Leipzig burst up the park on a counterattack and this time there was no denying Nkunku who slotted home just 16 seconds after Celtic’s corner.
Things quickly went from bad to worse for the Hoops who also lost their captain to injury in the first half when Callum McGregor was replaced by Oliver Abildgaard with around ten minutes before the break.
Kyogo came close to an equaliser around the 40-minute mark, but his looping header floated just over the cross bar following great work by Jota on the wing.
One goal separated the sides the sides at the break but, for the third Champions League in a row, Celtic were left ruing a string of missed chances in the first 45.
The second half was only two minutes old when the Hoops levelled the scoring through Jota who smashed the ball into the bottom corner following an inch perfect pass from Kyogo.
Leipzig thought they regained their lead through Dominik Szoboszlai on the hour mark but just like in the first half the celebrations were cut short when it was ruled out after another VAR check.

But they had their second just 35 seconds later when Silva took advantage of a gift from Joe Hart whose misplaced pass fell straight to a Leipzig player.
The home team continued to dominate the second half as Celtic struggled to get a foothold in the game after the Leipzig’s second goal.
And Silva put the game beyond doubt when he latched on to a Simikan cross to put the ball past Joe Hart for his second of the game to make it 3-1.
Celtic will now be hoping for a Real Madrid win against Shakhtar to keep them within touching distance to second spot and a place in the last 16.

‘Not how football works’ – Ange Postecoglou talks Celtic negativity, mistakes and injury hope after defeat

The Scottish champions fell behind in the first half before getting back on level terms through Jota after the interval. However, after Leipzig had a goal disallowed, Joe Hart presented the home side with their second goal in a 3-1 win by passing the ball to Dominic Szoboszlai who set up Andre Silva.
Postecoglou shut down a question around Hart apologising to team-mates after, stating “that’s not the way football works, mate”. Yet, the Australian felt a mistake was coming due to the manner in which his team were playing after getting level.
“At this level, if you play for survival you never really get anywhere,” he said.
“It’s not about the mistake. It’s about before then. We had a lot of the ball and we were just passing it back to him for no reason. You are doing what you think is safe but it’s not really what we are.
“I just felt it was creeping in before that after we scored we wanted to settle for that and started passing the ball back to him.
“It is about what is the lead-up to the mistake, are we playing our football. Are we showing the same sort of endeavour we were before then?
“I could see it coming, if it wasn’t Joe making the mistake it would have been someone else.”

Celtic were missing a number of key players with Aaron, Mooy, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Carl Starfelt, Liel Abada and David Turnbull all absent, while Callum McGregor went off injured in the 37th minute.
Next up is a Premiership encounter with St Johnstone, early on Saturday afternoon in Perth.
Postecoglou, who admitted McGregor’s injury “doesn’t look good”, believes those returning will help the team reach the levels the team constantly have under the Australian.
“Hopefully we are going to get some players back because we are going to need them,” he said. “Hopefully we get some bodies back and we can maintain our levels of performance.”

Hart gifted possession to the hosts before Andre Silva netted the first of two second-half goals following Jota’s equaliser.
The former Manchester City player told BT Sport: “I’m at fault for the second goal, no doubt about it, but that’s the way the manager wants us to play so that’s the way we play.
“Sometimes it’s going to hurt us but ultimately most of the time, as we proved tonight, we got through the press and gave ourselves real good opportunities to score goals.
“They were pressing with three and I wasn’t quite sure whether to go to the centre-half or Greg (Taylor) and I decided to go to Greg and I missed. They are the simple facts but it’s high-level football and something that I love playing. You make a mistake and you are going to get punished.”
Postecoglou is concerned about an injury that forced skipper Callum McGregor off in the first half.
The midfielder appeared to get injured as he lost possession following a short corner immediately before Leipzig countered for Christopher Nkunku to score the opener.
“It doesn’t look good,” the Celtic manager told BT Sport. “We were a bit unlucky with the goal because he went to have a shot and something tweaked in his knee. He put in an enormous effort to chase back and it was his toe-poke that put the guy through.
“It doesn’t look good but I’ll wait to see what the doctors say.”
Spidey100 of KDS:
Not massively disappointed with the defeat but always disappointing to see us concede the same sloppy goals over and over. We generally concede goals in Europe in three ways:
1. an individual error/brain fart of some sort;
2. A loss of possession and the opponents waltz through the midfield unchallenged and our centre backs are over-run/beaten one on one; and
3. Any kind of goal in the 5-10 minutes after we’ve just conceded.
Nothing’s changed. We’re also pretty poor at dealing with transitions – see point 2 above and we rarely score or make decent chances from our own counter-attacks.
We struggle away from home. We’ve only ever won two CL away games – Spartak Moscow and Anderlecht – and drawn 4 – Barcelona 2004/5; Man City and Moenchen Gladbach in 2016/17 and Shaktar this year.
Being generous, you could add Milan in 2006/7 to the list of draws, though we lost in extra time, so I don’t. Which basically means we’ve lost 29 away games (including Milan 06/7) out of 35 played – around 83%. Half of our away “successes” came during Rodger’s two seasons in the competition.
We don’t seem to be doing anything to learn how to handle away games. Sometimes there’s nowt you can do – some teams will just be better – but we’ve lost some very winnable games in that run – Rosenberg, Copenhagen, Aalborg being the three obvious ones. It’s possibly a consequence of being a big fish in a small pond, but we don’t seem to be able to adapt to going to someone else’s stadium and have them play for a win – we’re too used to playing park the bus teams. The old maxim “play for a draw away from home” might not be a bad idea. At the very least cut the gap between the defence and midfield – which has been a problem since McManaman scored against us at Parkhead in Wim’s season (I am still annoyed with Weighorst for not taking one for the team on the half way line).
We’re not clinical enough – we miss loads of chances every week. Kyogo seems a shadow of himself this year – last year he was a whirl of motion and scoring all sorts of goals, whereas this year almost all of his goals seem to be tap ins (albeit some were difficult finishes) from a couple of yards. Jota started the season on fire, but has been a shadow of himself since the game against “them”. GG and Abada are in and out so haven’t built up a head of steam, Haksa is new and hasn’t had many minutes, and Maeda and Forrest don’t offer nearly enough craft or goal threat. We need our front players to be 100% on it and taking the one or two chances that might come their way to succeed at this level. We also need our wingers to close down and track their full backs better.
Physically we’re way behind other sides. CalMac, Hatate and O’Riley are either small, weak, lack stamina, lack pace or suffer a combination of those shortfalls. None of them seem to have a defensive bone in their bodies either.
Given the market we shop in, there’s a compromise to be made as we aren’t going to find someone who is all of those things AND has killer technique and vision – you’re looking at mad money for that. The compromise seems to mean that we end up with either an O’Riley (technique, vision, lack pace and stamina) or a Lundstram (strong, has stamina, but not much else). That being the case, we need to develop the right blend – like WGS who blended a combo of Naka and McGeady/Maloney with Barry Robson and Hartley/Brown. The Danish boy might be the answer, but he’s not played enough to know. Stamina is a worry though – we’re blowing out our backsides after an hour(ish) – we need to build some “active rest” into our way of playing, either by playing some keep ball, or just sitting deep for 5-10 minutes to catch a bit of a breather.
Ange won’t want to play a proper DM, and our current system sees us play full backs who come inside and play almost as quasi-6/8s who also need to dash out to cover the full back areas. A back three and a proper holding midfielder might work better! Or Playing with CalMac as a 6 alongside another 6 (the Danish fella probably) with Hatate or O’Riley as the 8/10 might be the way to go and would also mean our full backs have to invert less.
The lack of physicality applies across the team – with the possible exception of CCV, none of our players look athletic enough to play at a higher level. Talented enough perhaps, but not athletic enough.
So a lot to do. We’re massively inexperienced at this level – it’s our first CL group stage for 5 years and we’ve only qualified for the groups 11 times in the past 22 years. Of our current side, only Hart and CalMac have any real experience of this level before now.
So I’m kind of seeing this season as a bit of a learning curve. However, I worry that we won’t be so lucky with the draw next year (assuming we make it) and that this is our best chance of finishing second or third in the group – we’re more likely to end up with our usual group of death next year than we are with a decent group. Let’s see how we get on with our next three games – let’s hope the crowd can carry us to at least 4 points in the next two games and maybe we can nick something in Madrid’s final dead rubber game (let’s also hope Madrid beat the other two as well, which is an easy assumption to make but might yet turn out to be the wrong one).

Andre Silva runs off celebrating his goal against Celtic
Andre Silva’s second-half double handed Celtic a bruising defeat
Celtic’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League were dented after RB Leipzig eventually triumphed in a frantic and entertaining contest.
Jota’s second-half equaliser hauled the Scottish champions level after Christopher Nkunku had put Leipzig ahead in a fiercely contested first half in a packed Red Bull Arena.
But their good work was undone when goalkeeper Joe Hart gave the ball straight to Dominik Szoboszlai, who teed up Andre Silva to score the first of his two goals.
The Portuguese striker rounded off a brilliant Leipzig move to ensure the German side leapfrog Celtic in Group F, with Ange Postecoglou’s team still searching for their first win before a re-match in Glasgow next week as they now sit bottom of their section.
Reaction & as it happened
‘If you play to survive that’s all you’ll get’ – Postecoglou
‘Celtic must be more pragmatic’ – Scottish Football Podcast
Leipzig were menacing in the final third throughout, with Nkunku denied a goal earlier in the game by the video assistant referee for offside, before the Frenchman, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea in January, slotted home as the hosts pounced on the counter.
After Jota had equalised, the impressive Szoboszlai hit a post after a fantastic move involving Nkunku, and then his crisp effort into the far corner was ruled out after the referee reviewed footage of Silva blocking Hart’s view from an offside position.
But Celtic – who themselves created plenty of chances but were not helped by the loss of Callum McGregor to injury before the break – lived to regret not taking advantage of that reprieve, as Hart immediately passed the ball straight to Szoboszlai, and Silva made him pay.
The Leipzig forward then capped another fine move in which Nkunku pinged a fantastic pass across to Mohamed Simakan to provide the assist.
It was a sad end for Celtic, who until Hart’s error had played well. Jota’s equaliser was a well-worked goal, as Reo Hatate picked off a slack pass before feeding Kyogo Furuhashi, who crossed for his Portuguese team-mate to slide home.
And before that point, Kyogo himself had a header flash just wide, as well as another shot deflected just past a post, while Hatate and Moritz Jenz also had good opportunities.
But ultimately it was a similar story to the defeat by Real Madrid and draw with Shakhtar Donetsk, where Celtic were not clinical enough in front of goal, while mistakes at key moments were punished.
Player of the match – Christopher Nkunku

Celtic undone in big moments – analysis
Celtic can travel back to Glasgow with their heads held high – but with plenty of regrets, too. Despite missing their first-choice centre-backs and losing their captain and most influential midfielder McGregor, they pressed Leipzig and picked off their slack passes.
Jota’s equaliser was beautifully worked, and came as a result of good pressure in midfield, and they stretched Leipzig often enough.
However, it’s hard to escape the feeling the team’s inexperience at this level is costing them. Only two of the nine starters have played serious minutes in the Champions League before this season, and it shows in the big moments.
Too often they are wasteful in front of goal, and in turn are punished for errors. Having said that, two of the mistakes which led to goals were committed by the two players who do have elite level experience.
Celtic ‘not here for a pat on the back’ – Greg Taylor
Leipzig’s first came from McGregor’s heavy touch on the edge of the opposition box, while Hart’s pass to Szoboszlai was inexplicable at a crucial point in the game.
The quality of the opposition can’t be forgotten, either. Nkunku was sharp, Szoboszlai grew in influence, and Simakan on the right was a constant threat.
The Germans will come to Glasgow next week with confidence after a poor start to the campaign, and will fancy their chances of putting Celtic out of the equation for second place in the group.
