‘I knew I was three short’: James Forrest takes limelight after joining Celtic’s 100 club
https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/i-knew-i-was-three-short-james-forrest-takes-limelight-after-joining-celtics-100-club-3881395
James Forrest has never been one to like the limelight. A quiet, humble, hard-working character, he prefers to let others do the talking. Yet this likeable 31-year-old could not avoid being centre of attention this time around after scoring a hat-trick against Hibs and taking his goal-tally for Celtic to 100 goals.
By Mark Atkinson
Forrest was handed his first start of the season by manager Ange Postecoglou and he was the main player in a 6-1 thrashing of hapless Hibs. He could have scored more on the day had he not been replaced, to rapturous applause, on 65 minutes and he can lay claim to being a Celtic legend: 100 goals, ten leagues titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups. His achievements are even more impressive given he’s had injuries to contend with, especially under Postecoglou, where he has not started as frequently as before.
Asked when he started thinking about reaching 100 goals, Forrest remarked: “Maybe last year when I’ve got closer more people have mentioned it. The team is doing well and I’ve not playing. I’m delighted – first start of the season, helping the boys and getting another hat-trick and 100 goals is unbelievable. I knew I was three short. I’ve scored two hat-tricks so didn’t think I’d get another but we started really well and getting the first goal early I always knew we’d get chances. Having two at half-time, it was definitely in my head going into the second half.
“In football it’s crazy how one game can be so high then it goes low. But I think what I’ve done and how I’ve been there have been so many highs and it’s definitely been worth it. I’m grateful to be here so long and delighted I’ve contributed. A couple of boys were winding me up wanting me to dance in front of the fans.”
Forrest has had to bide his time for a start this term, with Jota, Liel Abada, Daizen Maeda and Sead Haksabanovic offering stern competition on the flanks. He hopes that he has given Postecoglou some food for thought with his efforts against Hibs.
“The manager is big on performance,” continued Forrest. “The last couple of games I felt I’d done well coming on. The amount of games and the way we play I think he will need every one at it and have subs coming on making an impact. Every player needs to be ready and because he has changed it nobody knows if they’re playing or not. It’s good for competition for places.
“The manager just wants everyone training hard and playing well. As I’m older I’ve been injured and had different experiences. Maybe this year I’ve had a good pre-season. I’ve maybe not played as much as you want but you have to look at the positives. You can’t be down and the manager always said he’d give everyone a chance and the last few games have proved that with players who have been on the fringes coming on.”
Lee Johnson lambasts ‘timid’ Hibs, questions psychology, speaks of ‘fear’ and points finger of blame at himself after Celtic loss
Hibs manager Lee Johnson says he will have to change a “fear factor” within his squad after watching his team lose 6-1 away to Celtic in the cinch Premiership.
By Mark Atkinson
https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/hibs/lee-johnson-lambasts-timid-hibs-questions-psychology-speaks-of-fear-and-points-finger-of-blame-at-himself-after-celtic-loss-3881375
On a chastening afternoon for Hibs, a James Forrest hat-trick, a double from Giorgios Giakoumakis and a late strike from Daizen Maeda condemned them to heavy defeat, with substitute Elie Youan netting what turned out to be merely a consolation for the visitors.
Johnson labelled his team “timid” and questioned certain players’ psychology, while also accepting blame himself with his own tactics and team selection after making a quadruple substitution at half time.
“I’m hugely disappointed,” said Johnson. “Clearly we don’t want to come here and be as timid as we were in the first half. It was really disappointing. As a collective we wanted to be the first team to make some recent history. The first three of four minutes we had chances to enter the final third and be brave. We didn’t get at people at the edge of the box and that timid play ended up like a domino effect through the team. The first two goals we don’t get up to the ball. What is the fear factor of going to press? These are defenders who have a lot of experience in the league and as a team we can apply pressure.
“There’s a fear factor there but that’s what we have to change. It’s the hardest thing to change but it must be on a psychological level. That’s difficult for me to take and eats me up inside because second half we’ve had a good goal. We’ve still been outclassed but we tried to get to the ball apply pressure, scored a good goal. But the standard of goals we’re conceding – we’d do well to put clips together from a Sunday park league. It must be a psychological factor because I see these boys sitting third or fourth or wherever we are. I see them in training, work on drills and they often execute things. It felt we were a boxer that didn’t want to throw a punch because we were worried about the counter punch which hurt me most.
When asked where the finger of blame should be pointed, Johnson continued: “First and foremost it’s 100 per cent me. I sent the team to press in a certain way and got it wrong, it’s as simple as that and I have to take responsibility. Just as an example, two wide players were dragged back psychologically through their good play. I want front foot pressing from our wide players but it was almost like someone on our goal had a rope and was pulling them back because of Celtic’s good play. We also gave the ball away too many times. For the full-backs not to engage and to allow so many free crosses, we had to change it to a five. I couldn’t keep seeing Boyle running back towards his own goal or defenders being 20 yards from a wideman ambling out to stop a cross.
“It’s on me but you put a team out and you want them to produce their best when it matters most. When they don’t you take them off or move them on otherwise you go. That’s the nature of the beast. I want to go to sleep at night knowing our team and club is going to play in a way that has an identity that’s really matched with the fans and what they want and in the first half we were a million miles off. If I could have made seven changes I would have.
“Second half we get the goal, we show some aggression and bravery and individual one on one combativeness. But the fourth goal is embarrassing. These are the moments where everything that could go wrong did go wrong. It will be a tough week and we deserve the criticism. I’ll front it up. I’ve had nearly 500 games as a manager and this is one of the worst I’ve felt because of the goals and the lack of bog-standard professional detail in the way we concede.”
Emphatic Celtic respond to critics by thrashing Hibs as club legend James Forrest hits 100-goal mark
In a week where Celtic’s credentials as a Champions League have been questioned, there can be no querying their status as Scotland’s top dogs. This 6-1 win over third-placed Hibs merely cemented that.

Manager Ange Postecoglou was able to make five changes to his starting XI yet still get a fine tune out of his team. Their lead over Rangers in the cinch Premiership has been stretched to five points ahead of the Ibrox club’s visit to Motherwell this lunchtime. Yet there is one man who deserves all the headlines, all the praise from this match. Take a bow, James Forrest, the one-club, dyed-in-the-wool Celt who scored a hat-trick here to take him to the 100-goal mark for the club.
What a phenomenal feat for a man who has played predominantly as a winger through a glittering career. At 31 years old, there should be more in the tank, albeit he has not been a regular in Postecoglou’s teams. Injuries have not helped him. Yet Forrest can lay legitimate claims to being a Celtic legend: ten league titles, five Scottish Cups, five League Cups and now a centenarian on the goal front.
This was his third matchball-winning feat for Celtic – his first treble came against Partick Thistle in 2018 and he scored four against St Johnstone later that year. Had Postecoglou kept him on the pitch for the full 90 minutes, he could have matched that tally given the absolute hiding Celtic gave Hibs.
Hibs’ Paul Hanlon and David Marshall are left dejected by Giorgios Giakoumakis’ goal to make it 2-0.
Hibs’ Paul Hanlon and David Marshall are left dejected by Giorgios Giakoumakis’ goal to make it 2-0.
The pre-match thought of Postecoglou’s heavy shuffling of his pack – five changes to the team that lost to RB Leipzig on Tuesday with Forrest, Anthony Ralston, Alexandro Bernabei, Aaron Mooy and Giorgios Giakoumakis coming in – might have been deemed risky given Hibs’ status in the league and the fact they’ve started life reasonably well under manager Lee Johnson. The reality was very different. Josip Juranovic, Greg Taylor, Kyogo Furuhashi, Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda dropped to the bench and were not missed.
Johnson had vowed to come to Celtic Park and attack their hosts. Under the Englishman, Hibs are ambitious. They like to press, they like to bomb forward. The hope for them was to expose Celtic’s sometimes shoogly defence but the philosophy played into Celtic hands. In essence, these two teams like to play the same way. Hibs are a bargain-basement version of Celtic, and it showed.
Celtic started with vigour and purpose. Deployed in 4-1-4-1 formation with Matt O’Riley continuing to fulfil duties in a deeper midfield role, Mooy and Reo Hatate in front of him scampered forward in earnest to support the front three of Forrest, Giakoumakis and Sead Haksabanovic. With full-backs Ralston and Bernabei pushing up too, Hibs’ back-four simply could not live with the number of bodies flowing towards.
Hibs’ defence weren’t helped by the reluctance of Martin Boyle and Harry McKirdy – given his first start – on the flanks to protect them. Celtic had clearly targeted right-back Chris Cadden, who was exposed on Tuesday in the 1-0 defeat by Dundee United for the goal, partially because he is not in great form but also because Boyle does not track back. Celtic were wise to this. Their opener, on nine minutes, came down the flank in question, Bernabei feeding Haksabanovic, who had too much time to cut on to his right foot and deliver a fine cross that Forrest steered back across David Marshall and into the net after ghosting in at the far post.
Celtic’s second goal, on 18 minutes, was again manufactured down the left. This time Bernabei was the direct assistee, scuttling free and putting in an accurate, low cross that Giakoumakis met to power home an unstoppable shot.
A clearly shell-shocked Hibs team were then not aided by their captain and most experienced player, goalkeeper Marshall, helping out his old employers on his first return to Celtic Park on club duty since leaving in 2007. Forrest’s effort from just inside the penalty box carried power, but the ex-Scotland stopper should not have let it go through his hands and over the goalline before he was able to recover.
At this point, one really feared for Hibs. Johnson and his coaching staff deliberated the situation in their technical area. Central midfielder Josh Campbell was told to go over and help Cadden out to stop the bleeding. While Celtic completely dominated the rest of the half, the scoreline remained the same.
Johnson acted by making a quadruple substitution at the interval and going to a back-three, with Rocky Bushiri making his first appearance for two months due to injury. McKirdy, who looks a little like Derek Riordan but isn’t nearly as effective as him, made way for Elie Youan, while Cadden, Stevenson and Mykola Kukharevych also came off. Marijan Cabraja and Kyle Magennis were the other two introduced to the fray.
Youan made an impact on proceedings, giving Hibs a small glimmer hope on 56 minutes with a composed finish after Boyle had set him free. It was his first goal for the club. Alas for the visitors, Forrest went on to score the 100th for his just minutes later.
Nohan Kenneh was caught in possession and Mooy ferried the ball out to Forrest, unmarked and bearing down on his goal. His crisp finish took a slight nick off the despairing Paul Hanlon and shot high into the net. With the win secured, Postecoglou took the chance to take off O’Riley, while Forrest came off for Abada. Celtic Park rose to acclaim him.
The scoring was not done, though. Giakoumakis bagged his second with a nice finish that gave the post a right good kiss on the way in after a pinpoint cutback from Abada on 73 minutes. The Greek was removed, so he could not match Forrest on the scoring stakes on the day. While Maeda came on and scored on 89 minutes, again with assistance from the woodwork, there could be no denying it: this was wee Jamesie’s day.
Ange Postecoglou: Celtic belong in Champions League, says manager
By Alasdair LamontBBC Scotland
Oct 2022
Celtic have two Champions League games left to secure a Europa League berth
Ange Postecoglou says Celtic have earned the right to play in the Champions League and proved they belong at that level.
After another chastening week of three defeats in Europe for Scottish teams, the Celtic manager has defended his side, who have one point from four games in Group F.
“If anyone can tell me in the four games we’ve played that we don’t deserve to be there, or that we’ve been outplayed, I reckon they’re talking from an agenda,” he said.
“The only questions I’ve had from each of our games is about opportunities missed. Now opportunities missed suggests to me that we’ve got to improve some areas for sure, but it doesn’t say that we somehow should think that we don’t belong in a competition we’ve earned the right to be in.”
Asked whether Maccabi Haifa beating Juventus, or Club Brugge topping their group shows smaller clubs can punch above their weight, he said: “Look at those clubs historically. Have they always had those results? They haven’t, I’ll tell you.
“What it means is, the longer you’re in this competition, the more opportunities you have to grow and make an impact, but you’re not going to go in there for the first time and expect you’re going to dominate the most prestigious club competition in the world.
“From our perspective, we felt we’ve earned the right to be in this competition, we know the areas we’ve come up short in, but at no stage do I, or any objective observer, believe we’ve looked out of place.”
Celtic nee to be ‘consistent qualifiers’
RB Leipzig’s 2-0 win at Celtic Park on Tuesday left Postecoglou’s team bottom of their group, four points below Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian side are well placed to take third place and enter the Europa League in the new year.
Postecoglou said he could not put a timeframe on his side being successful at the elite level, adding: “It’s about being at that level and having the chance to play at that level on a consistent basis. That means having to qualify for it and every year you want to grow.
“That’s what our objective needs to be, like most clubs our size. If you take away the big five leagues, the clubs that have made an impact at Champions League level are the ones that are consistent qualifiers for it.
“If this was our fifth or sixth year of being in the competition, I’d be having a different discussion.
“It’s all about perspective, what you’re trying to achieve. This is our first year back in for five years. I’m not going to accept people suggesting that somehow we haven’t earned our place or let the game in this country down.”

James Forrest scored a hat-trick on his first start of the season to take his Celtic tally to 100 goals as Hibernian were demolished in Glasgow.
The winger applied an early close-range finish and was gifted his second when David Marshall fumbled a routine shot.
His third came in the second half via a deflection, with Giorgos Giakoumakis slamming in a double.
Daizen Maeda made it six to the rampant hosts in injury time, while Elie Youan had briefly made it 3-1.

All of your Hibernian news in one place
Forrest has been used sparingly this season but took his opportunity with both hands as manager Ange Postecoglou, already missing the injured Jota, chose to rotate his squad following the midweek Champions League loss to RB Leipzig.
“He joins a pretty elite club,” enthused Postecoglou on Forrest’s century of Celtic goals.
“Your career is always defined by the things that last rather than money or accolades.
“It’s exactly why we wanted to keep him at the club. A successful squad is made of many parts. I knew James would be an important player for us over the year.
“He’s been chipping away at it and has made an impact every time he’s come on over the past few weeks. He was ready today and I know there’s more to come.”
Forrest struck first on nine minutes, drifting in at the back post to volley in a lovely cross from the impressive Saed Haksabanovic, who was stationed wide on the left.
Time after time, Haksabanovic tore past Chris Cadden with ease to cause the visitors all sorts of problems.
Hibs were exposed on the left again when Alexandro Bernabei galloped forward to drill in an inch-perfect pass for Giakoumakis to crash in with a first-time shot.
Celtic continued to press forward in waves and Marshall gathered a shot from Forrest a few minutes later before inexplicably letting another one slip past him.
Haksabanovic did the damage again and his low cross eventually made its way to Forrest at the edge of the box. The strike was straight at Marshall, but the Hibs captain, playing his first game against the club he left in 2007, fumbled it over the line before batting it away. It was a terrible lapse from the normally reliable goalkeeper.
Hibs made it to the interval without any more damage and made four changes for the second half.
One of those replacement, Youan, ran on to a Martin Boyle pass to beat Joe Hart at his near post, but the comeback was short lived.
Moments later, a woeful mis-kick from Nohan Kenneh allowed Celtic to feed Forrest and the winger completed his hat-trick with a deflected shot whizzing into the corner of the net.
Boyle was inches away with a dipping, curling shot, but Hibs continued to leave huge gaps for Celtic to exploit.
Substitute Liel Abada had so much time to pick out Giakoumakis with a cut-back and the Greek striker’s shot from 16 yards was taken away from Marshall’s path as an attempted block from Rocky Bushiri sent the ball past the keeper.
With the Hibs defence once again missing, Marshall thwarted Abada in a one-on-one situation but Celtic would not be denied a late sixth as a cross from the right dropped for Maeda to poke the ball home.

Celtic wingers have Hibs on toast – analysis
It’s no secret that Celtic like to attack down the flanks and they simply blitzed Hibs with their powerful running out wide.
The league leaders were a blur of industry from the first whistle as Haksabanovic ran riot on the left throughout the first half, with Forrest and then Abada taking on that mission from the right during the second 45 minutes.
Forrest will get the headlines but Giakoumakis was another making the most of a rare start, leading the line with real vigour and helping himself to a fine double.
The Hibs full-backs were hopelessly exposed to start with, offered no protection from those in front of them.
At Celtic Park, visiting teams need everyone switched on but Lee Johnson’s side were careless with the ball and disorganised off it, fortunate to only trail by three at the break. Basic errors contributed to their downfall, with Marshall’s first-half howler and Kenneh’s clumsy blunder coming so soon after grabbing a goal.
What they said
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou: “We needed fresh impetus and the whole group was great. For the guys who came in, that was exactly what they provided for us.
“I was really strong on the fact that, if we put on a performance like we did on Wednesday, the goals would come. It’s why I thought some of the Champions League comments were ridiculous. We set out to play a certain way and we’ve fallen short in areas where, for the most part, I think we can improve, but it’s not through a failure of endeavour or will.
“We will never change our approach and the players wanted to show that today.”
Hibernian manager Lee Johnson: “We have to be humble in defeat and Celtic were very good but we made horrendous errors for all of the goals.
“It doesn’t matter how much running you do or how much effort you put in, if you can’t defend properly make individual errors like we did, you’re going to come unstuck. We can’t accept that standard mentally and it’s going to be a tough week for us.
“We have to take lessons from games like this, whether that’s myself and the way we recruit but also for players to step into these games and not show the fear we showed in the first half.”
What next?
Celtic visit Motherwell in the League Cup on Wednesday (18:15 BST) before returning to Premiership duty at Tynecastle next Saturday. Hibs are at home to St Johnstone on Friday (19:30) in the first league match to feature VAR.
