Summary
“My thought process is that if you keep putting yourself in that position in playing the kind of football we want and creating chances then you get your rewards.”
Ange Postecoglou (pre match)
“Well done to Shakhtar Donetsk. Celtic out of Europe. Missed opportunities did for Celtic in the Champions League this season. Some good performances. Good chances created but bang average finishing. But I like what Ange Postecoglou is building”
Chris Sutton
Joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki: Mudryk steals the headlines with an exceptional goal & is clearly head & shoulders above all on the match day on the field.
Etims: FT #Celtic 1 SD 1From sublime to ridiculous at times. No lack of effort & endeavour but some of the inability to do simple passes, make the correct decision & at times just do the basics let us down. Prob seen the biggest sitter ever from Shakhtar! CalMac a massive miss for us. This last ten minutes has been like a game of 5-a-sides on a Sunday morning between two teams still pished from being oot on the swally on Saturday night!
TheCelticWiki: Seemingly every Celtic European game:Set piece to Celtic in opponent’s half.Set piece taken.GOAL TO OPPONENT.Rinse and repeat.
Joebloggscity: There was no last minute winner this time like last time v Shakhtar in the Champions League. Sikan almost steals all the limelight with one of the most embarrassing botch up of a sitter in Champions League history which denies them his side a possible three points (although Celtic had their chances too which should also have been scored from, e.g. one gilt-edged chance that fell to Kyogo).
HP: Frustrating and a disappointing game , much like all of the champions league games previously. As a ream we aren’t experienced enough at this level,Not cute enough for cynical fouls or clinical enough up front.Much work to do if we want to improve in Europe.
Italiabhoy of KDS:
The whole campaign has been incredibly frustrating, and tonight was no different. We should have won, just as we should have won in Poland. We should have 6 points off this lot, instead of 2. We should have finished 3rd in the group at least, based on the amount of chances we have created.
However, we have held our own at the very top of the world game. We have never been outplayed for an entire game (as happened against much worse opposition last season, and happened numerous times under Lennon), and with better finishing we should have won more points.
We have also been brave. We have stuck to our game plan and really tried to play good football. We always romanticise “the Glasgow Celtic way”. What is that if not an attacking, positive style of football the like of which Ange insists we play?
Our weaknesses are clear: we are profligate in front of goal. And we are painfully exposed to a fast counter attack. I do, however, have faith that Ange can make this a winning system at this level with better players in a few key positions.
Despite the meak ending, I don’t find myself too upset at things, strangely.
Liam Kelly: Repeat the same story again. Miss chances, on top first half. Concede goals second half. Don’t win. 68 attempts on goal and 3 goals scored. While conceding at the other end in every game. Good performances but errors costing goals at both ends. Hopefully it’ll change one day.

Wonder goal, wonder miss(es): Celtic’s European aspirations end on familiar Champions League night
A very special goal from a very special player extinguished Celtic’s European hopes for another season at Parkhead. The hosts were reminded once again that chances need to be taken at this level although sometimes it’s also incumbent to applaud the genius of others.

A wonder strike from Mykhailo Mudryk after 58 minutes means next week’s trip to play Real Madrid at a renovated Bernabeu will essentially be a sightseeing one.
Spectators were treated to one of the goals of this century at Parkhead and also one of the misses. Shakhtar substitute Danylo Sikan spent much of his cameo wandering around with his head in his hands as he relived the moment that might – and probably should – have meant an eighth successive home Champions League defeat for Celtic. At the same end as Peter Van Vossen’s howler for Rangers here in 1996, Sikan somehow sidefooted past the post after being given an open goal to aim at after more fine work by Mudryk.
Celtic had their own how-did-he-miss-that moment, although in fairness to Kyogo Furuhashi he still had a goalkeeper to beat after he was played in by Giorgos Giakoumakis, scorer of Celtic’s opener. The Japanese striker lacked the killer finish and Anatoliy Trubin was able to block.
Celtic have hardly disgraced themselves in this Champions League campaign. Indeed, there has been much to commend them, particularly their expansive approach. Coach Harry Kewell has dubbed it “rock ‘n’ roll football”. There was flashes of it here. Just not enough. Many home fans stayed to applaud their team off the park. Notably, they also hailed Shakhtar Donetsk. The visitors’ achievement in maintaining their European hopes beyond Christmas must be acknowledged on a day when seven citizens were killed by Russian bombs in the Donetsk oblast region.
Football must know its place. Celtic fans appreciate that as well as anyone. Nevertheless, they came here with the hope of seeing their team secure the win required to keep their European flame flickering.
When there’s little left to lose why not just throw the kitchen sink at it? That seemed to be manager Ange Postecolgou’s take on an admittedly desperate situation. And who can blame him? Kyogo and Giakoumakis started for only the second time together in a fluid formation that would sometimes become 4-2-4. The Celtic way indeed. But it was rarely ragged. Some caution was applied. Celtic knew they could ill afford to concede. Things were going well on that front until a blond magician decided to have a say. Mudryk is the sort of player who can make the difference at this rarefied level and that’s exactly what he did here.
Postecolgou was dismissive of the “theatre” of VAR after the win over Hearts on Saturday but this form of entertainment for the masses is more to his liking. This is the kind of theatre Celtic excel in. The lights went down and the first bars of You’ll Never Walk Alone trembled over the Tannoy. The reception greeting the Champions League anthem felt more intense than ever. Clearly, the home fans wanted to savour it one last time. Who knows when they will hear it again at Parkhead?
This, though, was another reminder of the step up in class at this level. The visitors’ comfort in possession often contrasted with Celtic’s often hurried, untidy treatment of the ball. Josip Juranovic was sloppy in possession in midfield and coughed up an early opening for Shakhtar.
While Celtic started brightly, they were certainly not looking capable of blowing the opposition away. A long-range effort from Giakoumakis that sailed over the bar after seven minutes was as close as they came in these opening stages. Greg Taylor popped up on the right to send in a dangerous cross that was headed behind for a corner. Missing chances has been Celtic’s Achilles heel in this season’s Champions League campaign. Here they were barely creating them.
But one straightforward opening is worth a flurry of half-chances. And that’s what came the home side’s way after 33 minutes. Sead Haksabanovic made good progress down the left and managed to put a good delivery into the box. Liel Abada sought to pounce in the goalmouth but his effort struck Shakhtar defender Mykola Matviyenko. The ball squirted loose and Giakoumakis was on hand to sweep home with his left foot.
It had not always been pulsating, up-and-at-‘em football from Celtic, but it didn’t have to be as long as they could take advantage of the chance when it did come their way. On this occasion they did. Over 50,000 Celtic fans started to dream. Giakoumakis, his blood up, tested the ‘keeper from far further out shortly afterwards and forced Trubin into a flying, finger-tipped save.
Celtic’s Giorgos Giakoumakis shows his frustration right at the death.
Celtic’s Giorgos Giakoumakis shows his frustration right at the death.
But the tie remained on a knife edge. Shakhtar’s quality- and in particular the quality of No 10 Mudryk – is not in question. A Mudryk break ten minutes into the second half ended with Oleksandr Zubkov sending a shot into the side-netting. He will know he should have done better.
Shakhar almost immediately made a change. Lone forward Lassina Traore was replaced by Sikan, who might have wished he had remained on the bench. The visitors were level two minutes later.
Postecolgou was preparing to make three substitutions of his own – Aaron Mooy, Daizen Maeda and James Forrest were all readying themselves on the touchline. But before they could come on Mudryk had altered the mood significantly.
At least Sikan could claim an assist before his horror moment. He pushed a ball towards his teammate but Mudryk – who took possession just inside the Celtic half – still had it all to do. He ran and, well, kept on running. Juranovic might regret backing off but Mudryk seemed intent on only one outcome – scoring. He cut inside and lashed a shot beyond Hart before running to the corner where a few hundred Ukrainians, many of them gifted tickets by Celtic, were gathered. It was the goal to end Celtic’s European aspirations.
Celtic player ratings: One man bags 8 but key figure lets down with 4 in mixed bag of marks
We give the Celtic players a mark out of ten for their performance against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League …

Joe Hart: Made an excellent save in the first half from Mykhalio Mudryk but could do nothing to stop the Ukrainian wonderkid equalising after the interval. Was relatively quiet for much of the match. 6
Josip Juranovic: Put in a steady enough performance at right full-back but was one of the players taken apart by Mudryk’s brilliance for Shakhtar’s goal. Unable to have a telling influence going forward. 5
Cameron Carter-Vickers: Bar one moment when he was out-paced by Mudryk, the Celtic captain was an assured presence in Celtic’s defence and one of their better players on the night. 7
Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi, left, and Greg Taylor close down Shakhtar’s Heorhiy Sudakov in possession.
Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi, left, and Greg Taylor close down Shakhtar’s Heorhiy Sudakov in possession.
Moritz Jenz: Like his centre-half partner Carter-Vickers, was relatively untroubled by Shakhtar’s target man Lassina Traore and kept the visitors’ chances to a premium. 7
Greg Taylor: Plenty of effort and tried to support Haksabanovic in the final third, but the attacking end product was lacking. Wasn’t overly stretched defensively. 6
Matt O’Riley: Asked to be more attack-minded than in Celtic’s past few matches, the Dane came close towards the end. Lacked that bit of stardust needed to win the match on the night. 6
Reo Hatate: Bundles of energy all night and tried to keep Celtic’s tempo going strong in a midfield that was outnumbered. Made way for David Turnbull late on as Celtic pressed for a winner. 6
Sead Haksabanovic: Played a huge part in the opening goal, drilling over the cross that landed at Giorgios Giakoumakis via a deflection. Some other intelligent moments on the left flank before making way on 65 minutes. 6
Liel Abada: Stationed out on the right, the Israeli had one of his quieter games in a Celtic shirt, although his dart into the box and subsequent mis-hit turned out to be an assist for Giakoumakis for the Greek’s goal. Came off on 65 minutes. 5
Kyogo Furuhashi: This wasn’t the Japanese’s night. Plenty of running but fluffed his lines at the vital moment when shooting weakly at Anatoliy Trubin when through on goal just after Shakhtar’s equaliser. Played second fiddle to Giakoumakis all night and was subbed off for Daizen Maeda. 4
Giorgios Giakoumakis: Was a totemic figure for Celtic in the first half, showing good predatory instinct to score and coming close with a long-range drive. His level dipped a little in the second period but he always looked the most likely avenue for a Celtic goal and was always a willing target. 8
Substitutes: Daizen Maeda (4), James Forrest (3) and Aaron Mooy (3) all came on but had little impact, with the latter two on the right being too wasteful. David Turnbull (n/a) returned from injury on 85 minutes but it was too late for him to make an impression.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykhailo Mudryk scores their first goal
Mykhaylo Mudryk’s stunning equaliser earned Shakhtar a draw
A wonder strike from Shakhtar Donetsk’s precocious forward Mykhaylo Mudryk denied Celtic a first Champions League win this term and ended their hopes of European football after Christmas.
Mudryk – who has been linked with Europe’s top clubs – charged forward on the counter and smashed in a stunning equaliser for the Ukrainian side, who could yet reach the last 16.
Giorgos Giakoumakis had rifled in Celtic’s first home goal in the competition for over five hours, but they could not find another.
Kyogo Furuhashi had the best of their chances to get back in front, but the striker shot tamely when clean through, as Celtic threw the kitchen sink at Shakhtar in a bid to find the win which they needed to have a chance of finishing third in Group F and dropping into the Europa League.
Instead, Shakhtar got the draw which ensures they will finish at least third – and potentially second – and the visitors also had the best shot at a winner when Mudryk burst through and squared for Danylo Sikan, who inexplicably failed to tap into an empty net.
Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic will finish last in the section, but will try to leave their mark in their final match against holders Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, while Shakhtar host RB Leipzig in the race for the last 16.

Reaction & as it happened
Celtic’s downfall throughout the group stage has been an inability to convert chances when on top alongside having their frantic press picked off later in games.
But at Celtic Park there were fewer clear-cut scoring opportunities, with Giakoumakis’ well-taken finish from close-range marking a more clinical start.
But a well-organised Shakhtar side showed a glimpse of their threat on the break through Mudryk, who was only denied when in on goal by Joe Hart’s outstretched arm just before half-time.
Shakhtar and Mudryk have been one of the stories of the competition having defied expectations throughout, and all of the visitors’ chances came through the 21-year-old with searing pace.
His goal was a stunning moment as he nipped around Cameron Carter-Vickers before cutting inside and blasting the ball into the top corner, and he showed the same quickness when he put the ball on a plate for Sikan, who somehow missed a gaping goal with a heavy first touch.
Celtic huffed and puffed until the end, but Matt O’Riley’s side-foot effort wide of the post was the best chance they could muster after Kyogo shot straight at the goalkeeper, following a well-worked move.
It’s been a tough learning curve for the Scottish champions, but they would have expected better from themselves.

Celtic struggle to make mark
Celtic’s campaign has been marked by profligacy, but this was not a case of the Scottish champions missing chance after chance.
Kyogo’s miss was the only gilt-edged opportunity which was passed up at Celtic Park. Instead, moves broke down at the final pass or cross.
Part of the credit for that has to go to a well-organised Shakhtar who, with all their documented problems associated with the war in their homeland, have been a feel-good story this season.
They were well set up, and in Mudryk possess a superstar in the making who is so dangerous on the break.
Postecoglou has spoken about testing his style at the highest level in order to improve, and Celtic will definitely need to do that if they get back to this stage next season.
If they can find a more clinical edge and improve their press off the ball in order to stifle teams without leaving gaps, they will make more of a mark.
But there are no guarantees against the best sides, and it relies on both keeping hold of their best players as well as adding quality.
What they said
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou: “It was a tight game. A lot on the line for both clubs. I thought we were pretty much in control. They caught us on the counter and scored.
“We had a chance with Kyogo – we miss. They had a big chance – they miss. It was a typical, tight Champions League game, but we couldn’t get the result we wanted.”
Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley: “We’ll try to be back next year with more ruthlessness in front of goal.
“I had one at the end that was a big chance. To be honest, if that’s in the Scottish league, I reckon we score them. Maybe it’s just a bit of anxiety, I’m not sure.”

Ukrainian children invited to be mascots at Celtic’s UEFA Champions League match
By Celtic Football Club
Celtic Football Club is delighted to announce that Ukrainian people displaced in Glasgow following the ongoing conflict will be welcomed to Celtic Park tomorrow night (Tuesday) as Celtic meet Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League.
A number of kids will be mascots at Celtic Park, joining the Celtic and Shakhtar Dontesk players as they walk out in Paradise. The Club will also be donating several hundred tickets to those who are currently settling in Glasgow.
Celtic has been actively working with refugees from all walks of life in Scotland for many years, including recently supporting the Scottish Refugee Council with significant donations.
Earlier this year in relation to the Ukrainian crisis, we donated a further £10,000 to the Scottish Refugee Council to assist their work with Ukrainian refugees in Scotland.
We will be giving support to as many Ukrainian people as we can – people who seek safety, access to shelter, food and clothing, we will aim to provide meaningful to support to people who often have nowhere else to turn.
Through Celtic FC Foundation, we have also already announced a specific project, beginning this coming week, where we will be working with Ukrainian families and children offering support for mental health, physical wellbeing and social integration, all to be delivered within Celtic Park.
We are experiencing one of the largest refugee and humanitarian crises in recent times with an estimated 6.6million people forced to leave their homes and over 11,000 Ukrainian refugees arriving in Scotland.
Tony Hamilton, Chief Executive of Celtic FC Foundation, said: “Helping displaced people coming to Scotland with food, clothing and shelter is completely in line with our own values.
“We have been pleased to be in a position to do that in connection with the Scottish Refugee Council and also to build on this by delivering our own project at Celtic Park for those Ukrainian people in the city who need further support.
“There are already many such people in our communities and it’s important for us that we maintain a strong level of support where we can.
“Our sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to the work that we’re doing in Scotland and across the world as we seek to make a positive difference to the lives of so many who face such huge challenges.
“We look forward to welcoming our Ukrainian guests to Celtic Park on Tuesday night and hope they feel at home at Celtic Park.”
