Summary
“We will need to be more active in the transfer market. This will be uncomfortable for some. I know fans live to have their heroes but to achieve at this level we will need be much more active”
Ange Postecoglou (pre match)
“They just refuse to yield, they refuse to give up and there is no lost cause – and credit to them.”
Ange Postecoglu
“It’s not by chance, it’s who we are. It’s a cliché, but I did say from the first day that we would be the team that doesn’t stop and the players have shown that. Sometimes it gets overlooked because we will score late goals even though the game is comfortably won, but it’s what I wanted for us as a football club and the players have totally bought into that.”
Ange Postecoglu (post-match)
Ange on VAR: “If you can’t decide after a few minutes, it’s probably not there..” “They’re just using it too much & it’s taking too long. It’s like a new toy they want to bring out all the time.” “I don’t think people fell in love with football just to be sitting around waiting for someone in a building miles away to decide outcomes”.
@AgentScotland · 2h What a win for Celtic, second time this season they’ve conceded a late late equaliser and went up the park and won it, really wild end to a nervous second half, don’t know if it was the early big VAR call but there was tension in the air throughout that second half, what a game.
El salto of KDS:
I don’t think we were at our scintillating best either, but a combination of bad finishing, goalkeeping saves, and a charmed goal kept the score tight.
Their equalizer was coming, after their five minute flurry in the later stages, before that they had created nothing at all.
The finish was epic Celtic, never stop, never say die, two great goals to seal a win that was harder than it should have been.
I think the VAR decision at the penalty knocked the stuffing out of us for a wee while, before that we were looking dangerous and capable of a few goals before half time. But the guy in the VAR room was the only guy who thought that was a penalty, a ludicrous decision, compounded by a harsh booking. The other VAR talking point “Checking Possible Red Card Offence” for the kung fu kick into GG, was dismissed with the same nonchalance as the ref had initially shown by not even blowing for a foul. If you’re checking for a red card for an offence like that, and they say its not worthy of red, should it not merit a yellow?
Levitt’s kick at Kyogo near the end should have earned him a red, not a yellow, a calculated and cowardly kick at the wee man, who definitely did not like it.
A well deserved win in the end, but we really should have scored more, earlier.

Celtic AGM: VAR concerns, next chairman, IRA chants, and the £100m stadium upgrade
Celtic’s AGM went without much ado on Friday morning as Ange Postecoglou reaped the rewards of a successful opening campaign in Glasgow. In what was essentially a long line of supporters waiting to offer adulation to the Greek-Australian, the only deviations were along traditional lines.

Quizzed by one shareholder on just what exactly the club had done to address the recent decision at Tynecastle when Celtic were aggrieved at a decision not to award a penalty in their favour, there was an instruction to seek clarification on VAR official Steven McLean’s role.
“It’s easy to get caught up in individual decisions one way or the other,” said chief executive Michael Nicholson. “It seems that handball is applied in different ways in varying countries. What we have as a club – and all clubs in Scotland have it – is an interest in having the best possible match officials and regulation of matches so we can focus on football.
“As we mentioned last year – and as Ian Bankier almost got into trouble with – we have for many years lobbied the SFA and the SPFL to make sure we got the best match officials possible. The first step with that was pushing for VAR – which worked out well! The second stage was to raise our concerns about VAR with the SFA.
“In relation to the specific incident (at Hearts) we did ask questions about how the rules had been applied. I think it is inevitable that with the early stages of VAR there are going to be some teething issues. But you can rest assured that we do continue to press that issue with the SFA and the SPFL.
“There is a working group that the SPFL have brought together of all the clubs. We are not the only club who hold that view.”
Meanwhile, there was no indication – despite some fairly pressing questions – about who exiting chairman Ian Bankier will be assumed by. There have been suggestions that Peter Lawwell could make a return to the boardroom with the AGM refusing to yield on any matters regarding who will take over. Lawwell’s name was never mentioned but loomed large over two shareholders who queried the board on the same matter.
“The decision to step down was my personal decision and I took it in the second half of July,” said Bankier. “It wasn’t something that had been on the agenda for the board. I communicated it to my fellow directors and pretty quickly after that – on August 1 – we announced it to the stock exchange and the markets.
“Today is November 4, so we are just over halfway between that announcement and my retirement. As soon as the board has made a decision it will do exactly the same thing, it will announce it to the Stock Exchange and markets.
“I can tell you that there is a search agency on the books of the company right now and beyond that I think it is inappropriate for us to go into the ins and outs and details of who we are speaking to and who we might not be speaking to.”
Questions on IRA chants and the club facilitating and indulging a small matter of supporters there was an invite to one shareholder to discuss his seating arrangements behind closed doors but there was a fudging of an issue that has been despairingly more apparent in recent seasons.
“We are aware of issues that have occurred at matches at home and away,” said Nicholson. “I think if you look at context first it’s not unique to Celtic. There are some societal issues that are being experienced by many clubs around the world. It’s also we believe a small minority of the support, far from the wider Celtic support.
“We have all supported Celtic for a long time and have all met lots of people and faces and one thing that unites all of us is support for the club. That’s why the club’s long-standing position has been that politics and offensive language and offensive chanting and gestures should be left outside Celtic Park.
“It’s obvious that some of the behaviours experienced don’t represent the views of people in here or the views of the club. But I don’t think it adds anything to public opinion for us to comment on that here.”
It has been a perennial line of questions at Celtic AGMs to query about an extension above the main stand. The figure to do so would cost around £100m.
“Unfortunately the South Stand is a historic asset and having looked at feasability studies in the past it would cost up to £100m to redevelop it in its entirety, which is money that we don’t have at the moment,” said Nicholson.
Ange Postecoglou launches VAR attack as Celtic boss blasts handball decisions and lengthy delays

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou launched a scathing attack on the way VAR is being used in Scottish football after becoming frustrated with lengthy delays during his side’s 4-2 win over Dundee United.
By Matthew Elder
The Greek-Australian was also vexed by another controversial handball decision going against his side after Dundee United were given a first-half penalty when the ball struck the arm of unsuspecting defender Alexandro Bernabei.
The award was given after a lengthy VAR check, while six goal reviews, as well as another hold-up while a possible red card for Craig Sibbald for a high challenge on Giorgos Giakoumakis was analysed, ultimately with no action taken, caused further delays.
Postecoglou was left exasperated by the constant disruptions to the flow of the match as his Celtic side recovered from conceding an 85th minute equaliser to score two late goals and move seven points clear at the top of the Premiership.

“I was frustrated and I probably didn’t handle it well,” said the Celtic boss. “Just to be clear here; I don’t have a problem with VAR but I have a problem with how it is being used. There is no secret that we want to be a team who plays at a high tempo, especially at home because we think that is effective for us but also it is entertaining for the fans. I don’t think people fell in love with football just to be sitting around waiting for someone in a building miles away to decide outcomes. They do not need to take that long. Even our second goal – our players are celebrating for about two minutes and we are still waiting all that time. To see what? I still don’t know what it was. If you can’t decide in two minutes then it is probably not there. If they have seven camera angles it seems like they want to look at every one. I might be on my own on this one but I will cop people making mistakes but I just don’t feel comfortable. I know it is early doors and it is a new toy that everyone wants to use but you can’t be disrupting games like this. I don’t think it is good for anyone.”
Celtic were penalised for two debatable handballs in the 5-1 defeat to Real Madrid in midweek and were also on the wrong end of the decision when failing to receive a penalty for a Michael Smith handball in the recent 4-3 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.
“It seems like any time the ball touches your hand in the box – apart from when you are playing Hearts away – it’s a penalty,” Postecoglou added. “The problem with technology is they are going to have to change a lot of rules because they are re-refereeing the game, which is the one thing they said they wouldn’t do. But they are, there’s no doubt about it.
“It’s changing our game. It’s changing what we all knew to be the laws of the game. They are not what they used to be. I was always pretty clear what a handball was, deliberate handball. I played the game, you kind of know. But it seems that’s not the way.
“That’s the problem we have got now, we have let technology come into the game and rules that have been in place for over a century that we are all comfortable with are all of a sudden having to be looked at. I don’t think that’s what VAR was for. VAR, I thought, was there to pick up clear and obvious errors. Clear and obvious. Someone is having a shot from that distance and it hits his arm, how they can say that’s clear and obvious? I don’t get it. That’s not the case anymore. The problem is with technology is they are going to have to change a lot of rules because they are re-refereeing the game, which is the one thing they said they wouldn’t do. But they are, there’s no doubt about it.
“And I feel for the officials because I have no doubt that they are scared to make decisions, they would much rather let it go and see if VAR picks something up. We scored the second goal and we were celebrating for two minutes and they are still checking when they are about to kick off. What the hell were we waiting for? There was nothing there, I could see that in the first screen. We can’t take away from the fact that we have 60,000 people here. Of course they want to see us win but they are also coming to watch a spectacle. They are not coming to watch someone in a building miles away take two or three minutes to make a decision. I just don’t think that’s what it’s for.”

VAR strikes again as Celtic overcome Madrid flashbacks with dramatic late win over spirited Dundee United
Celtic could be forgiven for longing for the days before VAR after overcoming another controversial handball decision – and the shock of a late equaliser from a spirited Dundee United – to claim a dramatic 4-2 win.
By Matthew Elder
https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/var-strikes-again-as-celtic-overcome-madrid-flashbacks-with-dramatic-late-win-over-spirited-dundee-united-3907242
A 90th minute strike from Kyogo Furuhashi – which fellow substitute Liel Abada added to in injury-time – ensured the league leaders avoided a surprise slip-up in the cinch Premiership title race after Tony Watt had looked set to haunt his former side with an 85th leveller.
Celtic seemed on course for another comfortable afternoon against a side they had put nine goals past in a record 9-0 away win in August when Sead Haksabanovic grabbed his first goal for the club inside six minutes.
But just five minutes later, Celtic were suffering flashbacks to their 5-1 hammering at Madrid in midweek when a goalbound Steven Fletcher header inadvertently struck the arm of defender Alexandro Bernabei as he attempted to make a block.

Given recent calls against them at Tynecastle and the Bernabeu – the former resulting in a call to the SFA – there seemed an inevitability about the outcome of the VAR check as David Dickinson was summoned to the pitchside monitor.
Sure enough, amid a chorus of boos from nearly 60,000 home fans, Dickinson pointed to the spot and booked the Argentinean left-back, prompting a look of disbelief from Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou on the touchline.
Fletcher stepped up to score and the frustration around Celtic Park was palpable as the home players struggled to regain the momentum built up by the early opener.
That angst was released on 34 minutes when Haksabanovic bagged his second of the match, although goalkeeper Mark Birighitti should have done better with a weak hand allowing the ball to squirm off the post before creeping over the line.
Despite restoring their lead Celtic were largely subdued in a stop-start first half where lengthy VAR delays – including a red card check for Craig Sibbald’s high challenge on Giorgos Giakoumakis that Dickinson hadn’t even deemed to be a foul – disrupted the flow of the match.
Celtic looked more eager to press home their advantage after the break and most inside the stadium thought Giakoumakis had scored a header from a Jota cross, but between them Birighitti and Aziz Behich somehow kept it out.
Other chances came and went – Matt O’Riley guilty of shooting too close to the goalkeeper on a few occasions – and that gave United all the encouragement they needed to launch a late rally. Greg Taylor, a half-time replacement for Bernabei, saved his side by heading a Glen Middleton effort off the line, and from the resultant corner Ryan Edwards headed against the post.
On came substitutes Dylan Levitt and Watt and the pair combined to stun Celtic Park with five minutes left as Levitt’s cross was nodded into the net by the former Hoops man.
Rather than cause a major upset, it only set up an enthralling climax for the home fans as a 90th minute O’Reilly corner was flicked on at the near post by Anthony Ralston and Furuhashi prodded it home to spark bedlam in the stands. There was still time for Abada to add a fourth as Celtic moved seven points clear at the top of the table, putting the pressure on Rangers ahead of their trip to St Johnstone on Sunday.

Celtic late show leaves Dundee United boss Liam Fox frustrated – ‘it’s not good enough’
Dundee United manager Liam Fox left Celtic Park a frustrated figure after his side failed to hang on to a 2-2 draw following Tony Watt’s 85th minute equaliser.

The substitute nodded home a cross from fellow replacement Dylan Levitt to stun the home fans as United looked set to cause a major upset by snatching a point from the league leaders.
However, the visitors failed to make it over the line, conceding twice to Kyogo Furuhashi and Liel Abada in the 90th and 92nd minutes to leave empty-handed.
“Tough to take,” Fox said. “More frustrated for the players than anything else, they put so much into the game. To get back level with a couple of minutes to play, we all know how difficult it is to take anything from Celtic Park, so to get ourselves in a position to do that and then to switch off from a set piece…
“The fourth goal is irrelevant, it’s the third that kills us. It’s not good enough from us that late in the game. We know there’s going to be an onslaught.

“We worked on that during the week, which makes it even more frustrating. I understand when you make subs that there’s an element of change to the set ups that we do but we need people to take responsibility and step up in these moments.”
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou was critical of the VAR delays during the match and while Fox admitted it disrupted the game, he was pleased with the handball check with resulted in his side being awarded a first-half penalty.
“I wasn’t best pleased with it last week [after Watt’s red card against Motherwell] but this week it has probably worked in our favour getting the penalty. From my point of view, I prefer they take a bit longer to get the right decision but it does disrupt the flow of the game. You can’t enjoy a goal because you are waiting to find out if it’s going to be chopped off or not. The process has to get better and slicker.”

Liel Abada guided in a fine finish to top off a dramatic comeback for Celtic
Celtic crushed a remarkable Dundee United comeback in a jaw-dropping finale to roar seven points clear at the Scottish Premiership summit.
Dylan Levitt appeared to have rescued a point for the visitors with his 87th-minute strike, but Celtic substitutes Kyogo Furuhashi and Liel Abada struck in stoppage time at a raucous Parkhead.
Sead Haksabanovic netted a first-half brace either side of Steven Fletcher’s spot kick after a VAR intervention.
United now sit bottom of the table.
Celtic’s lead could be narrowed if Rangers overcome St Johnstone in Sunday’s early kick-off.

The hosts flew out the blocks on their return to domestic action. Jota slid an enticing ball across the face of the United goal, with Haksabanovic lurking at the back post for his first Celtic goal.
The home fans would have been hoped with the early lead, Celtic would inflict another trouncing of United, similar to the 9-0 thumping handed out earlier in the campaign. However, quite the opposite followed.
Fletcher’s header undoubtedly struck the arm of leaping left-back Alexandro Bernabei inside the box, although he knew very little about it. After a lengthy VAR check, a spot-kick was awarded by referee David Dickinson with Fletcher stroking the ball down the middle for a controversial equaliser.
Celtic regained the upper hand when Montenegro international Haksabanovic sliced an effort by the fingertips of a helpless Mark Birighitti in the United goal.
After the interval, the hosts peppered the box without crafting a clear-cut opportunity to possess a more comfortable lead prior to a late flurry of gilt-edged chances for United, including Greg Taylor’s goal-line clearance to deny Glenn Middleton and Ryan Edwards striking a post.
Then, bedlam. Levitt caressed a curling ball with just two minutes of normal time left that deceived everyone, including Celtic keeper Joe Hart, to hush Celtic Park.
However, Celtic were not done. Three minutes later, substitute Kyogo skimmed a glancing header to prompt chaos inside a bouncing Celtic Park, before Abada audaciously chipped over Birighitti to squash the juice out of the Tangerines.
Player of the match – Jota
Despite not being amongst the goals, the Portugese winger produced moments of magic on his return to the Celtic starting line-up.
‘Never stop’ attitude displayed again – analysis
Catch your breath if you can. This was a prime example of everything Ange Postecoglou promised when he came to Celtic over a year ago. Goals galore, attacking football and a never-say-die attitude.
In seasons gone by, Celtic would have succumbed to a 2-2 draw, a disappointing drop of points. But despite conceding with just two minutes of regulation time remaining, you’d have been a brave soul if you didn’t fancy Celtic to carve out a winner late on… never mind two.
For United, it’s gut-wrenching. To come so close to grabbing something from Celtic Park, especially following their 9-0 hammering earlier on in the season, is harrowing. Liam Fox can take plenty from his side’s grit and determination, but it’s never nice to be looking all the way up from the pit of the table.
What they said
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It’s not by chance, it’s who we are. It’s a cliché, but I did say from the first day that we would be the team that doesn’t stop and the players have shown that.
“Sometimes it gets overlooked because we will score late goals even though the game is comfortably won, but it’s what I wanted for us as a football club and the players have totally bought into that.
Dundee United boss Liam Fox: “I was really pleased with a lot of aspects of it, but I expect more when we get to 2-2 with a couple of minutes to go. It’s a set-piece we concede from, which is disappointing, but in all honesty, I’m just frustrated for the players.
“There were moments of good stuff. We worked extremely hard and, if we continue to work that way, things will turn. The harder you work, the luckier you are.”
