Post-match: Celtic are to seek clarification from the Scottish FA after a VAR decision resulted in a Jota goal being ruled out for offside in Wednesday’s 2-1 win at Motherwell. Reports indicate a camera at an alternative angle missed the Jota incident. SFA responded with an admission that the nearside camera situated in the Motherwell end “did not capture an appropriate view of the incident”. However, they insist the VAR decision to chalk off the goal was the correct one. Shambles! See end of page.

- Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter says the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was a “mistake”. Controversial choice of venue, way too late now, to cynics it is hypocrisy. The Economist “The stadiums are set, the beds are not, and some locals wonder if this was worth $300bn”
- Scotland due to play Turkey in two weeks, but the Celtic manager has told his players they’ll be travelling to Australia instead. It’s meaningless games for Scotland, so it’s understandable why Ange has taken this stance and there’s been enough international breaks over the year
Summary
“We had to work hard for it, it wasn’t our best performance of the year, it was a bit of a grind.”
Ange
Ange on BBC Sportsound in regard to Scotland manager Steve Clarke being disappointed with Celtic not releasing players:
“Yeah well we’ve been disappointed when players go away on international duty and don’t play or come back injured”
“Leagues are not handed out in November, that is a FACT”
Fair play to ex-Celtic & Sevco player Kenny Miller, that is indeed a FACT!
Fatboab of KDS:
Poor night all round, especially from the officials in the VAR room.
We were well below par, yet managed to get an important win and another three points. So many players were off form it was strange, yet we should have scored 4 or 5 on the night.
Only the loss at Love Street was a poorer performance, so thank feck it was Motherwell, who really are a poor side.
One more game until the enforced break, and at home too. Hopefully the gap is nine or ten points .
QA of KDS: Joe Hart went over to pick up a snooker ball chucked at our players and tried to signal to the linesman. When play came towards us he still had it in his hand. When he passed the ball away he chucked it behind the goal and Turnbull picked it up.
Had that hit someone it would have been very serious. Those wee dicks in the corner have absolutely no scrutiny.
JBCity: Must make a note for Turnbull who came on as a sub, his sublime long range mm perfect pass to Maeda set up the winner and he deserves for acclaim for his part. A finer player than some give him credit for. And Motherwell has never seen a flares & fireworks show as was in the Celtic away end tonight!
Hellas67 of KDS:
To tell you the truth I’m raging with that, the “offisde” goal was sublime and was never offisde, how will we know though as once again only ONE line was used to “prove” it!
Their goal came from a FK that was never a foul, we are getting cheated to eff left right and centre and we still allow these hun bastards to go about their business without saying eff!
On the playing side, if the goal hadn’t been wrongly called off, we’d have pumped them BUT for the last four or five games we have been poor attacking wise as in we are always looking for that extra touch, flick, whatever and play the majority of the games on cruise control!
Get the games won early ffs and then try and walk the ball into the net!
PS: Loved how they were obviously trying their hardest to look for a reason to deny Maeda his goal, which by the way was a lovely first touch and a great finish!
PPS: Robbie Nielson’s Heart’s didn’t manage a shot on targget against Sevco! Whould’ve eff thunk it!
Twitter:
@Eeramacaroonbar:as ever with Collum he waved play on with a lot more obvious fouls. One I recall first half, blatant push on O’Riley.
Phil Gordon (journo): No wonder Celtic are sick of VAR. The Jota goal disallowed for offside didn’t look off – and the tackle on Carl Starfelt was bad, a red not a yellow. The VAR official was the same ref from Celtic v Dundee Utd. If you don’t get it right in public, no chance in private.
HP: Sloppy all over the park tonight , wanting too much time on the ball and some of the passing was way below the standard we expect . Collum was rank , see the tackle on Starfelt and a few other decisions ! 7 points clear , one game to go till the break , a good position to be in .
Fair to say VAR in its present form isn’t fit for purpose . Officials who are in charge of it are the same incompetents who are on the field of play the previous match who make the same bizarre decisions. As for the camera angle that was used to rule out the goal by Jota……
@CU: What you need to remember is that there are only 6 VAR cameras at a non Sky game and they are all focused on spotting a handball in the celtic penalty box.
@jbcity: Plenty of Celtic fans want in to this game and opposite end had plenty of empty seats (home fans) with a few mins to go! More than half empty! A sham… Poor way to sell the game.

Celtic edge Motherwell as inconclusive VAR call rules out Jota goal of the month contender
Ange Postecoglou might not wish to cultivate a reputation as the Tinkerman but such a policy appears to be working for him. Domestically at least, his Celtic side can do wrong at present whoever is wearing the hoops.

Having made 50 changes to his starting XI in the previous 11 outings, the manager made another six here following Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Dundee United.
It’s doing little to disrupt momentum although there might have been a greater degree of comfort had Jota’s potential goal of the month contender in the second half not been ruled out for offside after a VAR check. The replays were far from conclusive.
Celtic did go two goals ahead when a well-worked goal from two substitutes saw the fleet-footed Daizen Maeda scurry on to a David Turnbull pass and sweep home with six minutes left. Motherwell responded almost immediately as Ross Tierney volleyed in Matt Penney’s cross. The remaining nine or so minutes suddenly became very interesting. “There will be 50 minutes of time added on,” the Fir Park Tannoy man announced wishfully.
Carl Starfelt, making his first league start since the 4-0 victory over Rangers in September, Greg Taylor, Josip Juranovic, Aaron Mooy, Liel Abada and Kyogo Furuhashi all came into the team. Although it was tighter, far tighter, than last month’s 4-0 win the Premier Sports Cup, Postecoglou avoided any mishap after once again shuffling his pack.
This time next week Celtic will be in Sydney. They have the comfort of knowing that they will be at least seven points clear of Rangers at the top if they can win against Ross County on Saturday.
As well as being Celtic’s eighth successive domestic win, this was their 15th in a row against Motherwell.
Kyogo Furuhashi opened the scoring after 15 minutes after superb persistence from Matt O’Riley saw the Denmark international win the ball back from Callum Slattery after the Motherwell midfielder had initially dispossessed him. Again, it was the kind of full-blooded tackle that the dread hand of VAR might have wanted to have a say in. However, the check did not find fault with either the build-up or the execution, with Kyogo tapping in from a close range for his 11th goal of the season.
It did not signal a deluge and neither had it been the result of completely one-way traffic. Reo Hatate was guilty of sloppiness in midfield and was dispossessed by Stephen O’Donnell, who played in Kevin van Veen.
The striker rounded Joe Hart but pushed the ball too far wide. He could only bash his shot from a tight angle.
Motherwell endured more disappointment after 21 minutes when Bevis Mugabi limped off after blocking a Mooy effort. He was replaced by Sondre Solholm.
Slattery, spotting Hart was far out of his area, sought to make amends for his earlier error but his effort from well inside his own half drifted harmlessly wide.
The ambition had to be applauded – and was by many Motherwell fans in the main stand.
They were slightly less appreciative of Louis Moult’s continued residency on the bench, particularly since Van Veen, at half-time, and then Stuart McKinstry had departed, to be replaced by Connor Shields and Josh Morris respectively.
Moult did appear with half an hour left and came close with a glancing downward header that bounced up over the bar.
Ange Postecoglou in ‘not many teams in Europe’ boast after narrow Celtic triumph over Motherwell

Kyogo Furuhashi and substitute Daizen Maeda put the visitors 2-0 ahead, with the latter goal coming six minutes from time.
It was almost immediately followed by a reply from the hosts from substitute Ross Tierney, who volleyed in from close range, but Celtic held on to secure an eighth successive domestic win.
Postecoglou admitted the performance had not been one of his side’s best in recent times, but he was happy with the way all his players continue to contribute, often off the bench, amid the hectic schedule.
“We’ve had perfect league form in a period of real fixture congestion, including Europe,” he said. “There won’t be many teams in Europe who have gone through that and had the results we’ve had.
“It was a bit of a grind tonight,” he admitted. “We never really got into the rhythm we wanted.
“Credit to Motherwell for really working hard. We didn’t start well and complicated things. We made the game difficult for ourselves.
“But it’s not easy away from home so another win is good.
“They worked hard and disrupted us. When we’re playing well, we move the ball quickly and find simple solutions. We tried to be too cute, we didn’t play the obvious pass. We didn’t control the game the way we wanted to.
“We could play better but a big part of this team is their character when we’re not at our best. Winning away from home in the Premiership is never easy. I prefer to play well every game but over the course of a season that’s impossible. They’re human beings.”
A fine clipped goal from Jota in the second half for offside after brilliant work from Kyogo was controversially chalked off for offside after a VAR check, although the Celtic manager was circumspect. “Yeah, I thought it was a good move,” said Postecoglou. “But we had good opportunities to take advantage of the space out there. It just happened too infrequently.”
Celtic reaction: Ange Postecoglou response to ‘Stephen’ Clarke; telling Daizen Maeda quotes; throw-in fury from Motherwell
Talking points from Celtic’s 2-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park as the Parkhead side maintain their seven-point lead at the top of the Premiership table.

Marvellous Maeda
Daizen Maeda gave the perfect response to those who rubbished his inclusion in the Japan World Cup squad at the expense of someone such as, for example, club teammate Kyogo Furuhashi. While Kyogo did notch his eleventh goal in what could be termed a telling riposte after his snub the not-always-so-celebrated Maeda came on and scored what proved a clinching goal in the 2-1 win over Motherwell. Manager Ange Postecoglou is not one of those who feels Maeda is fortunate to be heading to Qatar. Questioned on whether he believes Maeda is under appreciated, Postecoglou replied as you might expect him to reply: ‘not by us, mate’. Postecoglou is a huge fan of a player whose non-stop energy is perfect for the type of football the manager wishes to play.
“It depends on what you’re looking at,” he said, when it was put to him that Maeda tends to go ‘under the radar’. “Not internally. He works so hard for the team. He’s surrounded by other attackers who are different to him. He doesn’t get the headlines. But the contribution he makes is immense. I left him out for the last couple of games to freshen him up. He was outstanding again. The subs coming on were really important for us. He finished it off. At the weekend it was Kyogo and Liel (Abada). The lads have a good attitude about rotating the team, which is not easy, because they all want to play all the time.”
Polite Postecoglou
Postecoglou has been sure to avoid a war of words breaking out with Scotland manager Steve Clarke. You know things are staying assuredly polite when the Celtic manager referred to his Scotland counterpart by his Sunday name of “Stephen” in an interview on radio last night.
Postecoglou, who once managed Australia of course, empathises with what Clarke described as his disappointment at the news Celtic were withholding their players from heading with Scotland for a friendly against Turkey next week. Anthony Ralston, Greg Taylor, David Turnbull and James Forrest will all be heading to Australia to compete in the Sydney Super Cup instead. Skipper Callum McGregor is currently injured.
Speaking to BBC Sportsound, Postecoglou said: “It’s quite simple, Steve [Clarke] has every right to be disappointed, he is national team manager and I’ve been there. As a club manager we are sometimes disappointed with players who go out on national team duty and they get injured or they don’t play, but we all get over our disappointment quickly I’ve got no issue with Stephen, I wish him all the best. The players that we are taking are important for us and important for our supporters, that’s why we have taken the decision.”
Hammell’s woes go on
Motherwell manager Steven Hammell has not got his worries to seek injury-wise so he could have done without the contentious nature of what proved to be Celtic’s winning goal last night. With the hosts having won a throw-in in Celtic’s half, the taker, Matt Penney, was impeded by Celtic player Sead Haksabanovic, who had been off the field. Haksabanovic had barely returned to the pitch when he headed the ball almost as soon as it left Penney’s hands and Celtic swept up field and scored to make it 2-0.
“I thought the officials should have looked at the Celtic goal as they head the ball from off the pitch! They don’t even look at it,” pointed out Hammell. It was a strange one, though there can be few excuses for the hosts still conceding a goal from that position.

Kyogo Furuhashi scores
Kyogo Furuhashi’s goal sparked Celtic into life in the first half
Celtic “made it hard for themselves” as their seven-point Scottish Premiership lead came under threat in a narrow win over Motherwell, said Ange Postecoglou.
The Parkhead side cantered to a 4-0 League Cup win at Fir Park a month ago, but needed a first-half Kyogo Furuhashi tap-in to ignite them here.
The game looked over as a contest when Daizen Maeda rifled a thumping second with six minutes to play, only for Ross Tierney’s goal moments later to cause the exodus of home fans to be stemmed in hope of a grandstand finish.
Motherwell – who remain in ninth – caused Celtic some heart-stopping moments during a pulsating 90 minutes, but it wasn’t enough to bring about the visitors’ first midweek league defeat since May 2016.
“We didn’t get into any sort of rhythm, especially in the first half. We complicated things and made it difficult for ourselves. But we found a way to win again,” said Postecoglou.
“Part of the strength of this team is the character and resilience. Subs coming on are important and they all made a contribution. Daizen was raring to go and I’m really pleased he got his goal.”

All you need to know about Celtic from the BBC
The first of those moments came before the plumes of smoke drifting from the away end at Fir Park had fully dispersed.
A Stephen O’Donnell through ball unleashed Kevin van Veen. Bursting through the smoke and Celtic defence, he steered himself around Joe Hart, but his shot from a narrowing angle scudded a post before he scudded the ball away in frustration.
It would be Motherwell’s game in microcosm. Signs of promise, plenty of endeavour, but just not finding themselves in key moments. Similar would happen when Louis Moult’s headed effort agonisingly bounced up and over the bar in the second half, or when a glut of crosses didn’t quite find their mark.
At the other end, they were the masters of their own downfall in two of the game’s key moments. For the opener, Callum Slattery was robbed in his own box by Matt O’Riley, who then put the ball on a plate for Kyogo.
There was an air of the avoidable about the second, too. A quick throw in deep in Celtic territory hit Sead Haksabanovic in the head and bounces to a team-mate in green and white.. The counter-attack was then sprung, David Turnbull floating a delicious ball for Maeda to take on the run and thrash under Liam Kelly.
Watch all the goals from the midweek Scottish Premiership games
Celtic were far from their creative best, and were stifled for large parts by their well-drilled hosts. However, they were controversially denied a goal when Jota was ruled offside before cutely lobbing Kelly.
Giorgios Giakoumakis also was just put off enough by Ricki Lamie with the goal gaping with time running out.
Tierney’s late conversion from a Slattery ball had home fans thinking that halting a run of 14 defeats on the bounce to the Glasgow side may be feasible. Instead, it was Celtic who celebrated with their supporters at full-time.

Celtic keep rolling on – analysis
It was far from hot stuff from the defending champions on a wintry night, but it’s hard to argue with the facts as Postecoglou’s side recorded their eighth domestic win in a row. The blip in Paisley which preceded that run seems a long time ago.
There were glimpses of vintage Celtic, but with six changes from the team which defeated Dundee United on Saturday, they struggled to click in the first half, and looked vulnerable in the second as Motherwell attempted to find an equaliser.
For Steven Hammell’s side, there’s a clear identity with how he wants the game played, but their recent run of results have caused any momentum to stall. The Fir Park club have lost eight of their last 10, and will desperately want to get into this winter break with a positive result on Saturday and begin to regroup.
Bevis Mugabi, Stuart McKinstry and Van Veen were all lost to injury in the first half. The Motherwell boss doesn’t have his problems to seek.
What they said
Celtic’s second goal shouldn’t have stood – Hammell
Motherwell manager Steven Hammell: “Matt [Penney] took it quickly and the Celtic player stopped it from off the pitch. That was the frustration. Essentially the Celtic player has headed the ball on to the pitch. It’s not an excuse but we were wanting them to look at it. I don’t even though if they did, it was just dismissed quickly.
“As the game went on I felt we had a lot of momentum second half, we played with more intensity, we played higher up the pitch and a bit more aggressive. Again we just fell short.”

SFA break silence over Celtic offside goal as admission made over VAR camera
The Scottish FA has responded to concerns raised over the camera angle used to disallow a Celtic goal during the 2-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park on Wednesday.

Jota’s second-half effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR check but the images shared publicly appeared inconclusive after a camera situated in the opposite end of the ground was used to highlight the incident.
Celtic contacted the SFA seeking answers, and the governing body has responded with an admission that the nearside camera situated in the Motherwell end “did not capture an appropriate view of the incident”. However, they insist the VAR decision to chalk off the goal was the correct one.
An SFA statement read: “Referee Operations can confirm that during a VAR review at Motherwell v Celtic, the footage from the relevant 18-yard line camera did not capture an appropriate view of the incident.
“While the broadcast footage was only able to show a wider camera angle for viewers, Hawk-Eye technology is designed to calibrate an accurate offside decision from either of the two 18-yard line camera positions, with the subsequent VAR review determining that the Celtic player had received the ball in an offside position.
“We have provided feedback to the host broadcaster on the incident as part of our regular review of the system operation.”
