Trivia

  • KO: 15:00; Saturday; Celtic TV only
  • Last match before Qatar World Cup break.
  • Celtic go 9pts in front after Sevco draw away to St Mirren 1-1 (saved by a penalty unsurprisingly).
  • Celtic go into the break confidently with all commentators agreeing that the league title is odds on by a long way in Celtic’s favour. Sevco’s manager (GVB) is under pressure with knives out in the media, estimated cost of sacking would be £~4m.
  • Nine domestic wins in a row, 16 domestic wins in 17. Celtic come out of the recent punishing two games a week packed schedule (due to Champions League and the fixture congestion caused by the upcoming World Cup) in excellent form domestically but poor in Europe.
  • Another game, and continuing controversy over VAR decisions and non-decisions!
  • Minute silence held for Remembrance Sunday/Poppy Day etc. Bhoys Celtic & Green Brigade groups make a sensible protest by staying on the concourse until it is over to avoid creating  a commotion which the right-wing in the UK were craving.
  • Disabled supporters: The fantastic brand new viewing platform at Celtic Park, ‘View ’67’ was officially opened today by Callum McGregor and Lisbon Lion Jim Craig!
  • Celtic have been granted an alcohol licence for the West Stand concourse of Parkhead ahead of their clash with Ross County. Fans can enjoy a pre-match pint inside the ground until 1pm!
  • Next Celtic match is in touring Sydney Cup matches (Down Under).
  • Next domestic match is Aberdeen on 17th December.
  • Celtic are to seek clarification from the Scottish FA after a VAR decision resulted in a Jota goal being ruled out for offside in Wednesday’s 2-1 win at Motherwell. Reports indicate a camera at an alternative angle missed the Jota incident. Shambles.
  • Former Sevco coach Michael Beale insists they would ‘definitely’ have beaten Celtic to title last season if Steven Gerrard had stayed, LOL.
  • Jota misses out on Portugal’s World Cup squad.
  • Cricket: T20 World Cup final England v Pakistan on Sunday (won by England). Rugby League World Cup final the next weekend.
  • Celtic hit with UEFA fine (€15300) for anti monarchy banner, total paid tops €50,000
  • Ange Postecoglou inducted into the Football Australia Hall of Fame.
  • Footballers are being “pushed past acceptable limits” by a “saturated” schedule to allow for a mid-season World Cup, says players’ union Fifpro.
  • Scott Brown v Joey Barton: Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers may have shared the spoils in their League One clash at the Memorial Stadium, but Fleetwood boss Scott Brown definitely had a better day than his Rovers counterpart and former Sevco adversary Joey Barton. Match referreed by ex-Scotland referee Bobby Madden!
  • Music: Keith Levene, a founding member of The Clash and later guitarist for Public Image Ltd, has died aged 65. RIP

Summary

“I don’t know why there would be teething problems for something that’s been around for four or five years. If we’re not ready don’t start with it.”
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou’s questioning why there are so many issues with VAR

“If something does go against us you can sense they’re ready to make amends…” Ange Postecoglou “couldn’t be happier” with his Celtic players after they came from behind to beat Ross County to move NINE points clear.

“We’ve had some strange decisions go against us recently to say the least and they still can’t stop us”.
Matt O’Riley

fatboab of KDS:
A hard earned three points against a dour and industrious opponent, ably aided by a willing Hun in a referees suit.
Some of today’s decisions were actually mind boggling, yet here we are, 9 points clear at the break and looking like we don’t know how to lose domestically.
Hatate was utterly magnificent, head and shoulders above anyone else on the spark, and I thought Turnbull did well today , other than his dreadful set pieces.
We really need to call out this cheating though. The most baffling today was the one where their keeper picked the ball up and they got a free kick. Also noted we got told to retake a throw in because it was taken about three yards away from the spot it went out, yet it was the only call of its type all day.
I hope we go to town with the SFA

BBC journo Michael Stewart on Celtic Park penalty: “Horrific. Horrific. That could be the worst. For the referee to give it first and foremost is an absolute disgrace. I can’t believe VAR looked at it and said yeah, that’s fine. We must be playing a different sport here.”

@TheCelticWiki · It’s little wonder UEFA and FIFA don’t let Scottish referees anywhere near the major international tournaments. Hard to say what impact the World Cup break will have and we’ve a tough run of fixtures post-Qatar. There’s a long way to go and nothing should be taken for granted. But the manager and players have been immense in the first half of the season. Incredible effort.

Twitter:

@AgentScotland · Celtic looked like they could play all day today and not score until Reo Hatate took the game by the scruff of the neck and made things happen, the boy is such a unique talent in that losing possession has no baring on him, he’ll always try & be positive, what a difference maker.

@McNallyMirror ·Munro, the ref at #Celtic Park, is beyond bad. Ruining the game with a series of baffling decisions & blowing every time a County man falls down.Several stoppages but just 1 minute added at HT.A new low imo.

@hp: Its right and proper that we praise Turnbull and Haksabanovic for putting away the chances that were created for them , but the challenges and tackles from Ralston … 9 points ahead at the top of the league despite VAR. Tremendous . Reo Hatate: A calm in a storm of panic. A magnificent football player.

@HarryBradyCU · It’s a tactic of teams like Ross Cty to break up and stop play. It shouldn’t be the refs job to enable and facilitate it

@CelticResearch · That referee today. That the penalty wasn’t his worse decision speaks volumes. But the penalty was the result of two of them. VAR could actually work to our advantage in showing just how appalling Scottish refereeing actually is. No more split second “honest mistakes”

Why Celtic’s lap of honour was more adulatory than normal after victory over Ross County

It almost seems obligatory for Celtic to cough up a penalty through a controversial handball decision in games these days.

It is certainly obligatory for Ange Postecoglou’s men to find the loss of any goal, in any circumstances, no impediment to dishing out a defeat to domestic opposition. And the Scottish champions’ 14th cinch Premiership victory in 15 outings, a 2-1 success over Ross County after they found themselves 1-0 down in the 49th minutes, surely was definitive in the quest to retain the title.

Stretching their lead to nine points over a Rangers that had stumbled again earlier in the afternoon, they have established a gap that has never been overturned in the three-points-for-a-win era at almost the halfway point. The acclaim showered on Celtic’s players and manager as they took their standard end-of-game lap of honour was more adulatory than normal. That could be put down to the game concluding the first part of a season that now goes into abeyance for five weeks because of the World Cup. The sense, though, was that the reception was attributable to the fact the crowd recognise their is no budging Posteocoglou’s men from the top flight summit.

And though Celtic players and their manager – and the rest of us, for that matter – may despair at rules causing an extravaganza of handball penalty calls, the spot-kick converted by David Cancola ultimately seemed to do them a favour. The anger over the award by referee David Munro, and VAR’s subsequent confirmation, seemed merely to energise the home players and their legions. The reaction within the stadium appeared entirely understandable following referee the ball appearing to strike Matt O’Riley’s arm when it was positioned as it should have been for pacing forward to challenge Callum Johnson, only for the defender to flick the ball unexpectedly in the Celtic midfielder’s direction.

Injustice is a powerful motivation and so it proved just when Celtic had appeared to be unusually lacking in that department. Rangers’ latest travails, which ensure this championship only going one way, made the events in Glasgow’s east end seem of little real importance to the overall picture.

However, Celtic were jolted by going one down. They set about their visitors in ruthless fashion, having sloppily passed up several opportunities across a one-side first period. The return of their edge was shredding for Malky Mackay’s side. The incredible numbers Celtic proved willing to commit forward to flip the encounter, and their sleek passing and prodding in and around a penalty box they helped packed out, was too much for the Highlanders. The exceptional Reo Hatate had a huge part in that. In the 62nd minute, the Japanese schemer produced and wriggly-eel run took him past a host of opponents and into the left channel of the area. It opened him up all the space he required to be able to set himself and square to David Turnbull. Despite bodies all around him, with utter nonchalance, the attacker finished off a lethal move by poking the ball in from point-blank range.

Six minutes later, Hatate was again unable to be pinned down by the visiting defence as he not once, but twice, exchanged passes with Saed Haksabanovic to work the ball to the left hand edge of the area. It gave the winger the sighting of goal that had his eyes lighting up, the forward wrapping his foot around the ball and guiding it low into the corner.

Ange Postecoglou reveals how he has done ‘disservice’
to Celtic – ‘it’s best I don’t really talk about it any more’

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou refused to comment on the latest refereeing controversy impacting on his team as he effectively called himself out for shifting the focus from their outstanding league form in the recent weeks.

A 2-1 victory over Ross County that has allowed Celtic open up an unassailable-looking nine-point lead in the cinch Premiership was the scene of another vexing handball penalty given against the Scottish champions for a highly dubious Matt O’Riley handball. But this 49th-minute converted award gave way to Celtic hitting back twice in the next ten minutes to bring the success that gives them 27 points from the 30 played for as the season now enters a five-week World Cup shutdown. And it was his players’ “outstanding strength of character” that Postecoglou chose to highlight more than referee David Munro’s penalty call, which was confirmed by VAR.

“Look, me talking about it [VAR] the last two weeks has done a disservice to my football club,” the Celtic manger said. “It’s best I don’t really talk about it any more. The only way they were going to score today was a penalty and they got it, so, from our perspective, we just have to make sure we score more goals than the opposition.

“I am just really proud of the players. They are an outstanding group of players. The quality is there, but the strength of character is just outstanding. We’ve had 13 games in something like 42 days. Champions League takes a lot out of you with the travel and to be perfect in the league through that time is just a brilliant effort. We were really focused and strong and not deterred by anything. This was always going to be a challenge for us, as I think it has been for every football club in a similar situation. Whether that’s in Scotland or other places where people have European football combined with league football.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou takes the acclaim of the Celtic fans after the 2-1 win over Ross County.

“You can sense [the reaction to setbacks] even with our supporters now. No one panics. The players know what they need to do and they really believe in themselves. I think the opposition sense it as well that we are not going to yield at any point. I am pretty fortunate. I have a fantastic group of players with real quality and outstanding character. It is outstanding they continue to rise to every challenge.”

Celtic player ratings: The talent that got a 9 to show just how good he is – but one disappointment with 5

We give each Celtic player a mark out of ten for their performance against Ross County in the 2-1 cinch Premiership win.

Joe Hart: Little to do except try and get the attacks moving quickly on those few occasions he saw the ball in the first half. Suddenly found himself with a penalty to face near the start of the second half. Sent the wrong way by David Cancola. 5

Anthony Ralston: Powerful running up the right flank as ever. Went down a bit too easily in the second half amid shouts for a penalty. But put in some telling challenges to make sure Celtic kept the lead. Excellent. 8

Moritz Jenz: Helped off before half-time and replaced by Starfelt. Looked like a head knock when means the break has come up at a good time. 4

Cameron Carter-Vickers: Usual hulking presence at the back. As things started to look a little desperate for Celtic he did not have to be asked twice to have a shot at goal from distance. One went well over and another was blocked. 6

Alexandro Bernabei: One great run in the first half drew applause. Looked lively although played an unwitting part in the Ross County penalty award when his clearance deflected off Callum Johnson onto O’Riley’s hand. Subbed off with much acclaim from the stands after 86 minutes for Taylor. 7

Matt O’Riley: Shot narrowly wide in first half and set up Kyogo for a good opportunity. Unfortunate for the penalty as there was very little he knew about the ball rebounding up against his hand. Deflected effort late on. 7

Reo Hatate: Like O’Riley, a mainstay of this team amid wholesale changes from Postecoglou. And as usual, the hard working and not to say talented midfielder demonstrated why. Played a part in both goals – set up Turnbull with a brilliant run for the first and was in the right place to play a one-two with Haksabanovic for the second. 9

David Turnbull: One free kick into the wall. Booked for a foul in the middle of the park on the stroke of half time before he struck Celtic’s equaliser 17 minutes into the second half. He took a touch and then slotted home from four yards after fine Hatate play. 7

Daizen Maeda: Swapped sides with Haksabanovic midway through the opening half as Celtic looked to breach the visitors’ backline. A cross that went behind early in the second half drew groans. Subbed off as one of the three changes Postecoglou was preparing to make as Celtic went ahead on 68 minutes. 5

Sead Haksabanovic: Crossed for Kyogo, whose header went over early on. Struggled to get into the play in the opening half but burst on scene in the second half to put Celtic ahead with a lovely finish after a one-two with Hatate. Watched his effort curl into the far corner of the net like a snooker shot dropping into a pocket. 7

Kyogo Furuhashi: Uncharacteristic miss after being put through by O’Riley when he pushed a shot wide after 23 minutes. Headed over in the opening few minutes too. Made way for Giakoumakis just after Celtic made it 2-1. 6
Substitutes

Carl Starfelt: Slottled in seamlessly at the back after Jenz’ departure. 5. Giorgos Giakoumakis: Shot late on well saved by Laidlaw as he looked to get on the scoresheet. 4. Jota: Little chance to get into the groove. 3. Liel Abada: Lively cameo. 4. Greg Taylor: Slotted in for last few minutes at left back as Ross County made last stab at an equaliser. 2

Ross County dared to dream of signing off for the winter break in perfect fashion – but they can hold their heads high following their defeat to Celtic.

Following a goalless first half the Staggies put themselves on course for their first ever league win at Parkhead courtesy of David Cancola’s penalty five minutes after the break.

Malky Mackay’s men were unable to hold on for a famous triumph however, with quickfire goals by David Turnbull and Sead Haksabanovic securing the points for the Hoops.

It was a harsh blow for the Staggies, for whom even a point would have rounded off an excellent week following back-to-back victories over St Mirren and Hibernian.

Nevertheless, County’s brave performance will be a source of huge encouragement to take into the five-week break, before they return to action at home to St Johnstone on December 17.

Celtic went into the game with the incentive to move nine points clear at the top of the table, following Rangers’ draw with St Mirren.

The Staggies also went into the game high in confidence though, with Mackay handing Josh Sims a rare start in place of Owura Edwards.

The Staggies started strongly, succeeding in their early efforts to frustrate Celtic while also showing some neat play in their own possession.

It was the Hoops who threatened first on 13 minutes though, with Kyogo’s looping header landing on the roof of the net following a delivery from Sead Haksabanovic.

Ross Laidlaw was called into action for the first time on 18 minutes when he parried a Cameron Carter-Vickers effort from distance, with Alex Iacovitti following up well to deny Kyogo the opportunity of a rebound.
Jordan White in action against Celtic.

County had a glimpse of goal on 21 minutes when Jordan White was presented with a headed opportunity after the ball broke to him following a free-kick, however his effort lacked enough power to trouble Joe Hart.

Celtic were not at their fluent best but they carved out a fine chance moments later when Matt O’Riley played Kyogo in on goal, but he dragged his effort wide of Laidlaw’s right hand post.

It proved to be the best opportunity of the first half, with David Turnbull hitting the wall with a free-kick and Kyogo sending another strike over in the minutes leading up to the break.
Jordan Tillson in action against Celtic.

It had been a solid display by the Dingwall outfit however, and in doing so they became the first side to thwart the champions in the first half of a domestic fixture at Parkhead this season.

The Staggies made an even better start to the second period, and made the breakthrough just five minutes after the restart. In the midst of Iacovitti and Callum Johnson attempting to recycle play back into Celtic’s box after a free-kick was cleared, the ball was adjudged to have struck the arm of O’Riley following a VAR check.

Cancola was a picture of composure in his approach to the spot-kick, as he calmly sent Hart the wrong way to send the Staggies support into raptures.

The goal put County into a great position but there was still a long way to go, with Laidlaw immediately forced to make an excellent save to palm away Turnbull’s long range strike.

Turnbull was not to be denied on 62 minutes however, when he was on hand to knock the ball home from close-range after Reo Hatate had skipped to the byline in a fine mazy run which took him past the entire County backline.

Undeterred by losing the lead, Mackay signalled his attacking intent when he withdrew Sims and Cancola for forwards Jordy Hiwula and Dominic Samuel.

Celtic turned the game on its head on 69 minutes though, with Haksabanovic involved in a neat one-two with Hatate before cushioning a low effort into the bottom-left hand corner from the edge of the box.

County went all out for the leveller, with Edwards, Kazeem Olaigbe and William Akio brought on in the dying stages.

There was to be no final chance for the Dingwall men however, however it was a performance which showed the strides they have taken in recent weeks.

David Turnbull slotted the equaliser to spark Celtic’s comeback

Celtic go into the winter break with a nine-point lead at the Scottish Premiership summit after hitting back to beat Ross County and capitalise on Rangers’ slip-up at St Mirren.

The Ibrox side’s earlier draw in Paisley offered the opportunity to widen the gap, but Celtic Park was stunned into silence when David Cancola rolled in a penalty opener after Matt O’Riley was penalised for handball.

The response was swift and emphatic as David Turnbull slotted home before Sead Haksabanovic completed the turnaround.

Ange Postecoglou’s men sign off for the month-long hiatus with an eighth-straight league victory, while County stay 10th after their run of back-to-back wins was halted.

Everything you need to know about County

Rangers’ stumble heightened expectation among the Celtic support, but the buoyant pre-match mood had turned to frustration by the break as County efficiently stymied the hosts’ attacking threat.

It soon darkened further as Callum Johnson challenged O’Riley on the edge of the Celtic box and the ball hit the midfielder’s hand, with Cancola coolly sending Joe Hart the wrong way with the spot-kick.

Suddenly Celtic summoned the urgency that been lacking in the first half when a couple of Kyogo Furuhahshi efforts narrowly off target was as close as they came.

Turnbull was denied when Ross Laidlaw superbly clawed his curling strike from the top corner, but two goals in a six-minute spell dispelled County’s hopes of a first-ever league win at Celtic Park.

The equaliser was all about Reo Hatate as the Japan midfielder danced past three players and teed up a tap-in for Turnbull.

Haksabanovic then found a terrific winner, playing a one-two with Hatate on the left edge of the box and squeezing a low, curling finish just inside the far past as Celtic Park erupted.

Substitute Giorgos Giakoumakis might have made the margin of victory more comfortable, with Laidlaw impressively thwarting the Greek.

But Celtic head to Australia for the Sydney Super Cup on a high after what could prove a pivotal day in the title race.

Spot-kick controversy spurs Celtic – analysis

Celtic were lacking a spark until the contentious handball decision spurred them to life. The hosts had mustered just one shot on target before the interval and were frustrated by County’s low block and defensive diligence.

Once they fell behind, though, Celtic looked a team transformed and fed off the crowd’s frenzied promptings. While Celtic have won plenty of games this season with their quality, this one was notable for their strength of character in turning the game around.

County’s league record at Celtic Park now stretches to 16 fruitless visits, but the visitors can be proud of their performance.

Malky Mackay’s men expertly frustrated Celtic in the first half, with the midfield shielding a well-drilled defence. Having seen their lead quickly wiped out, though, Mackay will be disappointed his side failed to threaten an equaliser when they went for broke in the final stages.

Still, having risen out of the bottom two in recent weeks, County have reason for optimism heading into the break.
What did they say?

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It was a big win and a strong performance. I can’t speak highly enough about this group of players.

“Whatever challenge has been thrown at us in the league, we’ve been outstanding. You don’t sense panic at any stage with us. We have some quality players but really strong characters too.”

Ross County manager Malky Mackay: “Disappointed obviously, but very proud of the team in the way they played and tactical discipline they showed to match Celtic.

“Celtic eventually got a couple of goals but they didn’t have many chances against us.”
