Summary
“In difficult times, it’s amazing what this football club can do for people.” Ange Postecoglou paid tribute to Frank McGarvey and Kevin Bridges’ Dad Andy after the 2-0 win against Kilmarnock.
Etims:
HT #Celtic 1 Killie 0 A really dire first half. Killie happy to let Starfelt have all the time in possession. He’s so slow with ball. Him, Bernie & Reo playing pointless triangles. One bit of quality before HT. QUICK pass, QUICK pass and goal! More of this pls.
FT #Celtic 2 Killie 0 A game of two halves. 1st half dreadful. Killie game plan to try & give Starfelt / left side defence / mid ball. Too slow bringing ball out of defence. Only bit of quality was goal on HT when we moved the ball at pace through Bernie, Maeda and Jota. Con’t…
2nd half terrific. Almost immediately when Starfelt got ball he played quick pass out wide. Clearly Ange had words at HT. After that tempo was set and we played really well. Space opened up & the rhythm and pace we are used to seeing was there. Cracking second goal. Con’t..
Reo immense the second half. A joy to watch. Maeda also on his game. One run he made I can’t recollect any other Celtic player doing in my auld lifetime! Pretty much sprinted length of the pitch with ball at his feet before firing just over the bar. Incredible. Con’t…
Big GG unlucky with two efforts off the bar. We also hit the post twice and missed numerous chances. Haven’t seen any replays yet but…what a turnaround from 1st half. Joy to watch. Celts now 12 points clear. More of the 2nd half play & we’ll take some stopping
AP of KDS:
Two similar goals, the 2nd was definitely an OG, doubt if Kyogo touched it.
Usual stuffy, frustrating first half, and the goal eased the pressure.
Once the 2nd went in, it was just a question of how many? Answer – 2.
MOTM – the goal posts.
Most of our domestic games are like this. Determined opponents, no real chances created (until the 1st goes in). and the crowd moaning.
No point in moaning about individual performances as there were no failures as such (crossing and failure to shoot aside), and Alistair Johnston definitely has potential to be a fixture somewhere in the team because let’s face it, he turned up in all positions!
Sure, it’s 51 points to play for, and it’s 51 points to see…
@agentscotland: FT: Celtic 2-0 KilmarnockVery comfortable in the end for Celtic, after a first half no-one will ever remember they were a lot better second half, keeper made a couple og great saves and they hit the woodwork four times, their relentless march to the title continues, 12 clear.
Chris Sutton: Celtic played some lovely football second half today but were wasteful in front of goal. Could’ve been 6! Got to say virtually every time Giakoumakis comes off the bench or plays he always looks like scoring or creating havoc. I hope he stays and sees this season out.
@agentscotland Running out of superlatives for Reo Hatate, his vision, awareness, the drop of the shoulder and the way he just glides past people, oozes class, whether he’s pinging first time 50 yard passes right or left foot, threading passes through the eye of he needle, a privilege to watch.
Misc: The SFA sent Kenny Clark onto Sportsound but he isn’t allowed to discuss incidents and his only argument against the VAR issues with consistency week to week is “refereeing is subjective and fans of all teams will always moan” – a waste of time.

Celtic partake in a goalframe challenge as Kilmarnock fortunate to escape with 2-0 defeat
Meet 2023, same as 2022 for Scottish teams pitching up to Celtic Park. They come, they defend, they suffer defeat, usually with Ange Postecoglou’s men graciously sparing them a bleaching through converting only a fraction of their chances.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtic-partake-in-a-goalframe-challenge-as-kilmarnock-fortunate-to-escape-with-2-0-defeat-3978251
All such customary elements were present and correct as Celtic extended their lead at the top of the cinch Premiership to 12 points with a 2-0 victory over Kilmarnock – a day ahead of Rangers facing Dundee United at Tannadice. The only break from the norm was in the encounter being framed as a dress rehearsal for next week’s Viaplay League Cup semi-final between the teams next Saturday.
The 5-4-1 formation that Kilmarnock Derek McInnes deployed to stifle Celtic – the home team’s early stodginess helping this prove an effective enough ploy for almost a full half – no doubt will be the blueprint for his gameplan in the national stadium. McInnes stated afterwards that the approach had served its purpose in as much as “it was important we didn’t take a sore one” ahead of the semi-final. Yet, the slaps inevitably came. As, surely, they will come for the Ayrshire men in a week’s time.
Celtic’s latest outing allowed them to extend their unbeaten domestic run to 15 matches. The win means their 100 per cent home record in the cinch Premiership now covers 10 games. The majority of these have proved more engaging than what the home denizens were treated to as their team toiled to produce penetration against opponents Postecoglou described as “well structured”. He also acknowledged his own men’s shortcomings ahead of Jota plundering his eighth goal of the season just on the stroke of the interval.

“It was a bit sticky, we didn’t really get in the game, our flow. We didn’t make some good choices in the front third. Our decision-making wasn’t great. The boys were disappointed but we got a really good goal, stuff we work on, and then second half I thought we were really good. We dominated and played in the areas we wanted.”
The opener was the turning point, then. A bish, bash, bosh in which the flowing Celtic re-emerged, with Callum McGregor sending Daizen Maeda scurrying down the right before he flipped over a cross that Jota darted in at the front post to glance into the net.
Kilmarnock defender Ash Taylor was the luckless visiting player that required to take the credit – if that’s the word – for the clincher second, only seven minutes into the second period. Doing the right thing in pressurising Kyogo Furuhashi as he sought to get on the end of a diagonal from deep by Reo Hatate, the big defender’s final touch only succeeded in diverting the ball beyond keeper Sam Walker.
A chancefest last 15 minutes then ensued as Celtic’s substitutes appeared to be involved in some sort of bizarre goalframe challenge. Giorgos Giakoumakis had a header and thumping drive that rattled the crossbar, while James Forrest and Matt O’Riley efforts rebound from either post in the space of seconds. Kilmarnock, with Walker also denying the Scotland winger and the Greek striker, might not be so fortunate in part two of the clubs’ double header.
Ange Postecoglou refuses to ‘fall in love’ with his Celtic players as he addresses Giorgos Giakoumakis future
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou refuses to give thought to the desirability of not allowing players to move on after being burned over that in his early trackside days.

An all-action half-hour cameo from substitute Giorgos Giakoumakis in the 2-0 home win over Kilmarnock – the big striker twice hitting the goal frame – appeared to show his commitment and value to Celtic’s cause in the face of incessant speculation he is seeking a fresh challenge, and will be sold.
The Greek’s performance drew plaudits from his manager but asked if he was keen to see the 27-year-old remain at the club, he chose to avoid offering a direct response.
“I don’t think about those things,” he said. “I don’t think about who I want to keep or who wants to leave. I just work on the basis of the group I have in front of me. If anything changes I deal with it. People have their own ambitions in their football career. My goal is to make sure we are supporting them in their endeavours. If they think opportunity is better for them elsewhere then we will go through that process.
“I don’t think about it because I may want to keep all of them but I could get offers in for them. I think it was my first year of coaching that my favourite player left me after two games because he had a better offer so I have never fallen in love with them.
“I just deal with what is in front of me. Jacko has been working hard and Kyogo [Furuhashi] is in great form, scoring every week. So he is having to come on and make a contribution and he hasn’t flinched from that. He has tackled that task. Apart from the fact he was unlucky not to score today, his work-rate, his tracking back, the way he was holding the ball up for us, he was good.”
Following what the Celtic manager termed a “sticky” first period, his side battered the visitors’ goal without much reward on the back of him committing a raft of substitutions. A fact he considered a key takeaway against a Rugby Park side they will meet again in the Viaplay League Cup semi-final next Saturday.
“Jacko he worked his socks off, and he has all the time [and that was true of] all the boys that came on. James [Forrest] had a couple of unbelievable chances, David Turnbull was unlucky a couple of times, Liel [Abada] was great. The guys coming on are making a huge impact for us, which is important. People talk consistently about who starts for us, but it’s just as important who finishes the game. If we are going to be this team that is relentless, people coming on need to make a contribution.”
Celtic increase lead at top of the table after Jota ends Kilmarnock resistance

Jota ended Kilmarnock’s impressive resistance on the stroke of half-time to send Celtic on their way to a 2-0 victory that puts them 12 points clear at the top of the cinch Premiership.
Kilmarnock arrived at Celtic Park with only two points gained on the road this season but gave the home side very little encouragement in the opening 44 minutes. However, Jota netted from close range in the final minute of the first half before Celtic added a second shortly after the interval.

The champions threatened to score several more as they put further pressure on Rangers ahead of their nearest challengers’ trip to Dundee United on Sunday.
There was a pre-match tribute on the big screens to Frank McGarvey after his death on New Year’s Day, as the former Celtic striker was given a minute’s silence along with Pelé and the former pope Benedict XVI.
The Celtic manager, Ange Postecoglou, brought in Alexandro Bernabei for the injured Greg Taylor, while Aaron Mooy and Jota were also recalled.
Postecoglou claimed on Friday there was “zero chance” that major penalty decisions against his team would even themselves out over the course of the season and Killie had an appeal inside 30 seconds when the debutant striker Kyle Vassell went down under the attention of Carl Starfelt. The referee, Nick Walsh, played on after a VAR check.

The visitors lined up with five at the back and defended from the front to deny the Celtic midfield time on the ball. The tactic worked for the vast majority of the first half. Celtic took 20 minutes to force a corner and another five before getting their first effort at goal, when Jota’s deflected effort was easily held by Sam Walker.
The visitors also had some moments going forward. Chris Stokes’s cross hit the top of the crossbar and Ash Taylor headed on to the roof of the net. Celtic then had a goal disallowed in the 41st minute when Jota was called offside from Mooy’s lofted pass after the Portuguese winger’s low cross was turned home by KyogoFuruhashi.
But the decision looked straightforward and the away side looked as if they would deservedly go in level at half-time until Bernabei’s pass sent Daizen Maeda in behind Lewis Mayo. The Japan international cut the ball back and Jota knocked it home from close range after Furuhashi had slid in front of Walker.
Walker blocked Jota’s shot with his foot after the break but he was beaten in the 51st minute after a counterattack. Reo Hatate overlapped Mooy and received a pass before sending in a low cross that was diverted towards goal by Furuhashi. The shot appeared to take a deflection off Taylor before finding its way into the back of the net.

That was effectively game over and the rest of the contest saw Kilmarnock trying to keep the score down amid near-constant Celtic pressure. They managed to do so despite a series of close shaves. Maeda could not make the most of several chances, Walker made a good stop from Hatate’s 22-yard drive and the substitute Liel Abada flashed an effort wide from similar distance.
The chances kept coming for the substitutes. Giorgos Giakoumakis saw a powerful header brilliantly saved and then hit the bar from long range, James Forrest hit Walker and then a post from two glorious quickfire opportunities, and the Kilmarnock goalkeeper also pushed Matt O’Riley’s close-range effort on to the post.
Callum McGregor and Forrest missed further good opportunities to capitalise on Celtic’s second-half dominance before David Turnbull came close from 25 yards.

Celtic v Kilmarnock
Jota jabbed Celtic in front just before the break
Celtic extended their Scottish Premiership lead to 12 points over Rangers as their attacking persistence paid off against Kilmarnock.
After a dominant half, Jota broke the deadlock for the league leaders just before the break, sliding in to meet Daizen Maeda’s low cross to score his eighth goal of the season.
And Celtic doubled their lead after the break when Kilmarnock defender Ash Taylor deflected Reo Hatate’s cross into his own goal under pressure from Kyogo Furuhashi.
Rangers – in second place – travel to face Dundee United on Sunday (16:00 GMT) with precious little margin for error.

Celtic had such a glut of chances towards the end of the match that one could be forgiven for forgetting how sore Kilmarnock must have felt at Jota’s opener.
Derek McInnes’ men had defended stoutly for the opening 45 minutes, limiting Celtic to one deflected shot on target, that from Jota who was stymied by Taylor’s desperate block.
Kilmarnock, in truth, were worth no more than parity at the break. Seeking their first league win at Celtic Park since October 2012, they relied on long balls directed at debutant Kyle Vassell for their attacks.
The Englishman was badly isolated, though, and Cameron Carter-Vickers was too fast and composed, routinely dispossessing the striker and setting his side off on another period of Celtic possession.
That was the theme, save for Taylor’s looping header from Liam Polworth’s cross that landed on top of Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart’s net.
Celtic benefited from the energy of Hatate, Callum McGregor and Aaron Mooy, the midfield trio afforded time to look up for passes to Maeda and Jota, the Portuguese winger switching wings to try to break Kilmarnock down.
Taylor’s own-goal six minutes after the re-start was tough on the big centre-half, for if he had not made contact, Kyogo would surely have scored.
Visiting goalkeeper Sam Walker conceded two goals but had an outstanding match. He kept out an 18-yard drive from Hatate, getting down low to his right to parry, and after the break he dived high to his left to save a powerful Giorgos Giakoumakis header, aided by the woodwork.
The Greek striker smacked the crossbar a few minutes later as the visitors tired and the hosts became energised by the introduction of Giakoumakis, Liel Abada, James Forrest, Matt O’Riley and David Turnbull.
Late in the game, Forrest gave the fans who were still in the ground further excitement with two right-footed shots from eight yards, the first saved by Walker, the follow-up rebounding off the upright.

Celtic find their rhythm as Kilmarnock wilt – analysis
A list of stats would have made grim reading for Kilmarnock fans before kick-off. Celtic had won nine of their last 10 matches against their team and the hosts had secured 11 home league wins on the trot.
No disgrace, then, for McInnes to employ a containment policy. They had 21% of possession and only two off-target shots to show for their play, and the effort they spent chasing Celtic and closing down space eventually told on them.
Celtic’s enthusiasm for the task did not dim, despite being two goals up. They had willing runners late in the game, were on their toes as Kilmarnock became leaden, and were only denied a much more convincing scoreline by Walker.
McInnes and his coaching team must find a way to change the narrative when the teams meet in the League Cup.
What did they say?
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It was a sticky first half for us, we couldn’t find our rhythm. Credit to Kilmarnock for making it difficult but I still think we made some poor choices.
“Second half, we took control, played in their half and looked a lot more threatening. To be fair, we probably should have had two or three more [goals].”
Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes: “The better team won, no doubt about it. I was really pleased with our first-half performance but really sickened to lose the goal on the stroke of half-time. That was harsh.
“The second goal was when we were were attacking and they break on us. From then on, we worked hard. Celtic hit the bar a couple of times and my keeper has made saves, but we did a lot right out of possession and in possession.”
