2023-01-14: Celtic 2-0 Kilmarnock, League Cup

Match Pictures | Matches: 20222023

Trivia

  • KO: 17:30; Saturday; Viaplay TV, Hampden Park
  • League Cup (Viaplay Cup) Semi-finals; delayed cup matches due to break for World Cup; final will be on Feb 26th
  • Second time in two weeks playing Kilmarnock (league last week)
  • Weather was dreadful; rain gushing down and blowing a bit of a gale… Pitch was a joke, and was cutting up despite hardly being played on this season! Impacted game big time.
  • Viaplay Sports 1 – the new name for the subscription channel formerly known as Premier Sports following the recent takeover by the Scandinavian broadcaster.
  • Sevco win in the other semi-final with some questionable refereeing, notably a red not given to a Sevco player (Ryan Kent) for punching on-loan from Celtic Liam Scales, and a red card for an Aberdeen player when a yellow was more correct! Celtic face Sevco in final on Feb 26th.
  • Giakoumakis scores at the death to seal the victory and currently expected to close out his career with Celtic (and got a yellow card for his goal celebration for taking his top off). Although he was close to conceding a careless penalty earlier but would have been soft if given. Not convincing for a penalty.
  • Celtic’s have two goals ruled out by VAR. Possible penalty to Kilmarnock not given but would have been soft.
  • Ex-Rangers player Kyle Lafferty returns to Killie line up after serving ten game ban following sectarian remarks in a social media video. Media are disturbingly entertaining this guy who was suspended for for being a bigot without questioning what he did in run up to this match, joking about his desire to return to the pitch.
  • Lafferty created Celtic’s first goal this match with some deeming it a Lafferty own goal! And he was subbed off on 45mins! A lot of schadenfreude from the Celtic fans over this
  • Media etc trying to claim that Killie should have been given a penalty at the death, but it really wasn’t, and would have been soft. It was NOT a penalty. Claim that shows VAR bias for Celtic! Very unconvincing.
  • Rangers: A sheriff who owned shares in Rangers FC is to retire after it emerged that he colluded with a senior police officer before submitting a dishonest and misleading report during the botched police investigation into the club back when it was liquidated and died.

Transfer Window:

  • Tobi Oluwayemi has joined Cork City FC on loan until end of June.
  • Adam Montgomery returns on loan at St Johnstone.

Reports

  • Both @hochi_football & Sponichi Annex newspaper reporting Giakoumakis to Urawa Red Diamonds progressing & nearing completion. Other clubs interested too inc Sampdoria. Ligue 2 side Bordeaux have reportedly made an offer.  Japanese paper Sponichi claims he has now agreed and off to Japan for medical.
  • Celtic bid in excess of £2.7M + 50 per cent sell on (up to a limit) for Korean striker Cho Gue-sung.
  • Cho Gue-sung has decided to reject all offers from Celtic, Mainz and Minnesota United after Jeonbuk Hyundai persuaded him to move to Europe next summer. (Sports Donga)
  • Juranovic reportedly off to Monza for just 7.5m (loan then permanent conversion in summer). Fraction of previous estimates. Celtic reportedly holding out to see other interest. Possible Man Utd interest posited.
  • Southampton considering move for Daizen Maeda
  • Croatian side Hajduk Split monitoring Stephen Welsh
  • Celtic are one of three clubs interested in Szymon Wlodarczyk, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
  • Celtic is aiming J-League top scorer of last season Thiago Santana and his teammates Yuito Suzuki

Sevco manager Michael Beale claims Ange is lucky over Celtic outlay

“I agree, mate, I’m an extremely lucky man. I work for a fantastic football club with fantastic people. I’ve got a beautiful family. I’ve been doing this for 25 years now and long may it continue.”

Twitter:

Btw for those outside the People’s Republic of Glasgow, the weather is pishing doon and blowing a bit of a gale…for a wee change in January!

An audacious flick around the corner from Kyogo and Daizen Maeda produced a brilliant finish… …but VAR showed that Kyogo’s heel was just offside and so Celtic’s lead is still just one goal. Defender tackles, hits his own man, it breaks to a Celtic man who scored. How is that offside at all?

ETims: Fantastic assist for goal for Celtic by Republican Kyle Lafferty!

@agentscotland: Some of Celtic’s play in that first half was breathtaking when you consider how wild yhe conditions are, this makes my top 5 easily btw, the pitch has taken a hefty beating so far though, groundsman is gonna be hard at work to get it ready for tomorrow. This is pure old school fitbaw.  I absolutely loved that second half, the purists will be turning their nose up at it but every single player on that pitch in the second half gave it their lot, the pitch was horrific but that was pure heart and guts from everyone on both sides, brilliant. I thought Aaron Mooy was outstanding tonight, his touch, control, awareness and ability to continually create space for himself in a cow heap like that just highlights how well he played.

VAR views from KDS forum:

Anyone else not celebrate goals as they happen now? I was expecting both our goals to be disallowed for some reason. I kind of celebrated Maeda’s in the second half when I saw the replay, but turned out Kyogo was offside which I never even considered. Thought Hatate was offside as it happened. Takes the joy out the moment somewhat. Same with Kyogo’s equaliser at Ibrox.

It is the very worst thing to come from VAR, and a total lack of understanding the passion of fans.
Football is pretty much the lowest scoring sport so when you get a breakthrough you have an explosion of joy, serotonin on overload.
Under normal circumstances when Kyogo scored at Ibrox I would be going mental, but now I’m just waiting for the goal to be chalked off.
I was a massive advocate of VAR, I couldn’t understand why the biggest sport in the world didn’t use technology to assist decisions, now I just want it to be binned.
It could be used effectively if they refined the rules, for example, you are offside if all of your body is ahead of the last defender, or like today, if the ball touches an opponent before you score, it stands. Handball is so easy, if it is deliberate handball, then it is handball.

‘Seriously, what is the point?’ – Kilmarnock enraged as Celtic escape penalty punishment for Giakoumakis challenge

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes was left enraged by the failure of referee Willie Collum to award his side a 93rd minute penalty in their 2-0 Viaplay League Cup semi-final loss to Celtic.

Neither the official nor his VAR counterpart Greg Aitken deemed any offence had been committed when Giorgos Giakoumakis clamped himself round Joe Wright and the defender lost his footing – judgement calls that left McInnes in disbelief.

Joe Wright’s been man-handled and there’s no way Giakoumakis can get to the ball,” said the Kilmarnock manager. “But he’s come through him, two arms round him…it’s a penalty kick. I don’t understand why, the referee’s got a brilliant view, I don’t understand why it’s not a penalty.

“[I didn’t speak to Collum about it afterwards as] what’s the point in me speaking to the referee? Seriously, what is the point. VAR should be speaking to the referee. That’s the conversation that needs to be had – not me after the event. Celtic are through to a final. Pre-VAR, post-VAR, that’s a penalty kick. And how we can’t get to the right decision…Giakoumakis just gets a bit excitable. He’s clumsy, it’s a striker’s challenge. He stumbles into the back of Joe Wright, with two arms round his waist. It’s a penalty kick.

“Whoever’s on the VAR has to be big enough to say to the referee ‘Are you sure you’ve seen this right, you need to come and see this again. You’ve got a really experienced referee there and you need experienced people to ask the experienced referee to have another look at it. ‘Are you sure you’ve seen it right?’ What does it take? 30 seconds? I think if he sees it again he’ll give a penalty.”

Daizen Maeda bundled in Celtic’s first goal against Kilmarnock in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden
Daizen Maeda got the final touch to score Celtic’s first goal

Celtic saw off Kilmarnock’s stubborn resistance to reach their sixth Viaplay Cup final in seven seasons.

Maeda’s faint touch from Kyle Lafferty’s attempted clearance flew past Sam Walker to give holders Celtic the lead in the first half at Hampden.

The Japan forward had another goal ruled out for an offside, as did compatriot Reo Hatate.

Giorgos Giakoumakis settled the tie in stoppage time, moments after appearing to foul Joe Wright in the other box.

Kilmarnock will feel aggrieved that no penalty was given, as they played their part in an absorbing semi-final.

Danny Armstrong was the outstanding player for the Ayrshire club and had opportunities to level, including a close-range effort on the stretch that went just wide.

But Celtic saw out the victory and set up a meeting with either Rangers or Aberdeen – who play in Sunday’s semi-final – on 26 February at the national stadium.

Scottish League Cup: Celtic ‘find a way again’ as Kilmarnock left fuming at late penalty call

Kilmarnock were left fuming after Giorgos Giakoumakis’ late challenge in the box went unpunished

“I am a lucky man, so maybe it filters through to the players as well.”

That was Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou’s tongue-in-cheek response to a question about Daizen Maeda’s fortunate opener for his side in their 2-0 League Cup semi-final win over Kilmarnock.

Tongue in cheek, because it was a subtle nod to Rangers boss Michael Beale’s comments about Postecoglou being a “lucky man” to work with a bigger transfer budget.

Celtic scored twice and had two more ruled out at Hampden, but were pushed all the way by Kilmarnock, whose manager Derek McInnes said it was “the wrong decision” not to award his team a stoppage-time penalty when 1-0 down.

“Credit to Derek and his boys, they gave everything,” Celtic boss Postecoglou told BBC Scotland.

“It’s a semi-final of a cup and that’s what you expect. It was a battle today. Conditions made it tough, the pitch made it tough.

“Credit to my boys again, they always find a way irrespective of what the challenge is. They found a way again today.

“Battling is performance. Performance is giving the best you can under the conditions that are presented to you.”
‘It is a penalty – it’s a clumsy challenge’

While Celtic move on to next month’s final with a chance to win their sixth Viaplay Cup in seven seasons, Kilmarnock were left to rue missed opportunities.

That, and the officials’ decision not to award them a penalty for Giorgos Giakoumakis’ tussle with defender Joe Wright in the box, minutes before the Greek striker went on to score Celtic’s second.

“It’s not the right decision,” manager Derek McInnes told BBC Scotland. “It’s a penalty kick at the death.

“The ball is quite flat, Giakoumakis can’t get to the ball and he’s put his arms round Joe Wright. I thought it was a penalty at the time and even more so having seen it back.

“I don’t understand. We were told VAR would help the situation. I think VAR can at least ask the referee to have another look. Having seen it again, it is a penalty. It’s a clumsy challenge.

“There’s no point me speaking to the referee now. It’s there for these big games. I feel that was a penalty kick and I’m so disappointed for the players because I thought we deserved to take it to extra time.”
No distractions for Giakoumakis

Giakoumakis ended up being a key figure in a dramatic finish to what could turn out to be his last game for Celtic.

Reports have linked the 28-year-old with a move to Japan, after talks about an improved contract at Celtic broke down.

Josip Juranovic is another who could be on his way this month, though no formal offers have been received for the players.

Asked if there was any clarity about Giakoumakis’ future, Postecoglou said: “You saw the clarity today.

“If people think he or Josip are distracted, their performance says it all. They were focused on what’s before them today and they will be tomorrow.

“What is important is what I see every day and I see guys that are committed to this football club, training hard.”

Cup football is all about win or bust, drama and the one-off nature of the occasion. Win you progress, lose you are out.

Despite that simplicity and the opportunity available, the underdog often fails to muster the belief or gameplan to deliver a true contest. But amid a pulsating atmosphere and utterly horrible conditions at Hampden, Kilmarnock did just that.

A change of shape and intent to engage Celtic further up the pitch nearly paid off after 30 seconds.

Armstrong surged down the right to expose space vacated by Alexandro Bernabei. The winger cut back and sent a dangerous low ball across the six-yard box. Had Kyle Vassell gambled a second earlier, it was a certain goal. Unfortunately for Kilmarnock, he didn’t and the chance was lost.

Armstrong started like a man possessed as Derek McInnes’ side harassed and harried but crucially maintained a threat.

Slackness from Carl Starfelt was seized on by Rory McKenzie. He surged forward and unleashed a low drive towards the corner – only for Joe Hart to get down and tip round a post.

Celtic began to exert a grip on possession but failed to trouble Walker’s goal, until Lafferty’s attempted clearance from a free-kick struck the onrushing Maeda and diverted into the top corner.

It was a lucky break for Celtic, and the expectation was they would canter on.

But Kilmarnock immediately threatened through Wright’s header, then Liam Donnelly sent another looping header over. If the goal was a blow, Kilmarnock’s heads were not for bowing.

Celtic regrouped at half-time and seemed to exert more tempo to add to their possession. Hatate thought he’d added a second but was deemed offside after the ball deflected into his path.

Maeda then produced a wonderful top-corner finish from Kyogo’s superb flick in behind, but the assist had been delivered while the forward was fractionally offside, and VAR intervened.

Josip Juranovic was then just off target as Celtic looked for their elusive second goal.

But Kilmarnock never went away. Armstrong came so close to an equaliser as he slid in at the back post, then substitute Christian Doidge diverted towards goal only for Hart to palm the ball away.

Aaron Mooy and Liel Abada went close at the other end and, as the clock ticked on, you were never quite sure Celtic were over the line.

Even in injury time, a big shout for a penalty caused panic when Giakoumakis bundled into Wright. Nothing was given, and then finally the second goal arrived.

When David Turnbull’s shot was saved, his fellow substitute Giakoumakis could not miss from close range.

Celtic got there – but were given an almighty challenge in a wonderful cup tie.
Player of the match – Daizen Maeda

Celtic get job done, Killie outstanding – analysis

If McInnes can instil this type of performance in his side consistently, then they will quickly rise up from 11th in the league table. So much of what they produced was spot on, other than the most crucial bit, finding the back of the net.

They had chances, good ones, but just couldn’t convert. A desire to engage Celtic further up the pitch at times, and give their opponents no time to settle into their rhythm, worked well. Their performance was outstanding.

Celtic will feel they are deservedly through having had two goals, rightly, ruled out for offside and numerous chances to put the tie to bed earlier than they did.

It was clear, though, they were below their usual level. Whether that was down to conditions, Kilmarnock, or something else is not clear.

However, they did what champions do. Progressed to another cup final, and are within touching distance of winning the trophy for the sixth time in seven seasons.

League Cup semi-final: ‘Celtic relief after Kilmarnock bravely trade blows’

‘I don’t understand why it’s not a penalty’ – Derek McInnes

At the end, soaked to the skin, Ange Postecoglou walked to sections of the Celtic support, lowered the hood of his jacket possibly for the first time all evening and did his fist-pumping routine with gusto.

We’ve seen it all season but it looked like there was an ounce more passion in his celebration this time, a touch more meaning in his body language.

It wasn’t just the fact his team had just made another final – though that was reason enough to rejoice – it was how they did it.

This was a battle in conditions as foul as some of the things some of the Celtic fans sang at various times during the night, a victory forged in a tempest against an opponent that pushed them all the way.

Watching your team having to battle their way to victory brings a certain kind of satisfaction. Watching them avoiding the concession of a penalty with three minutes left to play when their lead still stood at one must have brought relief, too.

Holders Celtic edge past Kilmarnock to reach final

Even the unending rain at Hampden couldn’t douse Derek McInnes’ fire over that penalty call that went against them when Giorgos Giakoumakis went barrelling into the back of Joe Wright causing the Kilmarnock man to fall to the floor.

Killie appealed, strongly. Willie Collum ruled, weirdly. No penalty, no VAR, no end to McInnes’ frustration. He said his piece in the aftermath as he was entitled to. It was hard not to feel for him.

Killie’s part in this was unexpected. Nobody saw a contest coming. Even with the weather as it was – ducks would have quacked for cover – you couldn’t see the conditions being enough of a leveller to narrow the chasm that exists between these sides.

McInnes’s team are 38 points behind Celtic in the Premiership, they’d conceded seven goals and scored none in the two league games against Postecoglou’s men this season. They started with Kyle Lafferty who hadn’t played since mid-October for a ban on the back of a sectarian comment. Lafferty lasted 45 minutes.

A proper beating was the worst fear for Killie folk. Would they have settled for a face-saving loss beforehand? A 1-0 or a 2-1? A performance to build on even if it there was no final to look forward to at the end of it? When you are where they are in the league, then perhaps.

It was that mindset that McInnes railed against in the preamble. We could hear McInnes’ intensity, a hint of how driven his players went on to be.

He spoke of Killie being written off, how nobody on earth was giving them a chance, how everyone felt they could be on the end of a hiding.

He didn’t send his team out to defend their way to extra time or penalties, but to play, to take the game to Celtic, like an underdog in a prize fight meeting a favourite in the middle of the ring and trading blow for blow.

Danny Armstrong has been a star for Killie this season, a player with devil and little fear in his game. He took to this semi-final with relish. Alexandro Bernabei was nervous in his presence.

The unease spread to Carl Starfelt at times. In those early minutes Killie had chances but didn’t take them. Joe Hart saved excellently from Rory McKenzie. McInnes turned away from the pitch in angst. You can’t pass up chances like that against Celtic. McInnes knew the significance.

Celtic scoring with pretty much their first attack was a classic Celtic thing to do, a rope-a-dope in the rain. Daizen Maeda got it, but knew little about it.
Kilmarnock had their chances before Giorgos Giakoumakis, having survived a penalty scare moments earlier, tucked in Celtic’s second in injury time
Kilmarnock had their chances before Giorgos Giakoumakis, having survived a penalty scare moments earlier, tucked in Celtic’s second in injury time

Lafferty couldn’t believe his bad luck when his clearance came off the impressive Japan international – a player who has returned from the World Cup in top form – and nestled in his own net.

At that point you might have expected Celtic to drive a stake through the collective Killie heart, but there was none of that. Postecoglou’s side had two goals ruled out, both correctly. They had other chances that they missed.

There was never a sense Killie were done until that late Giakoumakis goal went in, a testament to their own character on the day. The penalty shout that preceded the strike that made it 2-0 was the thing that McInnes focused on more than anything else later.

He’ll be sore that this team will not return to Hampden for the final, but the attitude, the chances created, the issues they caused Celtic would have enthused him hugely.

He has a relegation fight on his hands. If his players can dig in over the next three or four months the way they did for 90 minutes here then that is a fight he will win.

He has to rationalise it in that way. He has no choice. Postecoglou doesn’t have to do any such thing. It was a difficult night. His team underperformed and were pushed to the max.

They survived the scare of a big penalty appeal. Some of his best players didn’t deliver. None of that matters. None of it.

A place in the final is all that counts. The bottom line. Celtic want a treble this season. Despite the rain and the wind and Killie’s challenge they are another step closer to that.
