Reports
- Outwith of England, transfer activity is exceptionally low so far this window.
- Celtic turning their attention away from Cho Gue-Sung – towards his fellow South Korean striker Oh Hyeon-gyu. South Korean football web forums, rumours speculate #Celtic offered $3.2m + 20% sell-on clause for Oh Hyeon-gyu and Suwon Samsung to accept it.
- Ange Postecoglou supposedly says (acc to tabloid) striker Giorgos Giakoumakis is going nowhere amid rumours of interest from Japan and the US.
- Monza, who were interested in Celtic’s Josip Juranovic with a ridiculously low bid, look set to sign right-back Pol Lirola on loan from Marseille instead. Reportedly set to join Bundesliga side Union Berlin. [sold day after this match]
- Moritz Jenz could leave this month with several sides from Germany interested. He’s not played much lately
- Dylan Reid, 17, is poised for a six-figure move to Crystal Palace just months after the Scotland Under-17 midfielder rejected a transfer to Celtic.
- Western Sydney midfielder Calem Nieuwenhof to Celtic? Not according to coach Marko Rudan.”I made a joke to Calem about it in front of the players. It’s the first me, Calem or Ange had heard about it… It’s welcome good news, albeit in this case it (the link) is false”
Summary
“You know that the result is everything, obviously you want to perform well and you want to play your football that has got you to that stage. Ultimately cup football is about the result, that’s all that matters at the end.”
Ange
Celtic midfielder David Turnbull: “In the first 10 minutes, we were under pressure but after that we played our football. I’m just trying to get as many goals and assist as I can. It’s a big squad and everybody does their job and gives 100%. You just have to give your all. I’ll be delighted to see who we can get in the next round.”
Morton manager Dougie Imrie: “First 15, 20 minutes, we were well in the game and, again, VAR changes everything. No-one really sees anything. I don’t know how Efe’s meant to get his hand out of the road. It takes a deflection and it’s so close. I just don’t know how they can give a penalty. After that, we kind of felt sorry for ourselves, we lost another goal in quick succession. We had a couple of opportunities, but we lose another two goals that kills our hopes of getting anything.”
JBCity: Easy enough after a tricky start from Morton. Big talking pt was the penalty awarded for Celtic via VAR & the referee for handball by Ambrose (ironically he had conceded a penalty ten years ago when with Celtic playing v Morton). Every Celtic fan believes it was a wrong call. That penalty awarded against Bernabei a month ago seems to have set a precedent. I don’t think that one or this one conceded by Ambrose should be penalties. This is a slight on the game and the officials.
El Salto of KDS:
Easy win, the penalty was harsh against Ambrose, as harsh as the ones we had given against us ie Matt O’Riley and Bernabei ones, we got no sympathy
The other hand ball that Ambrose got away with was clear as fecking day
Supporting arm my arse, is this a new one? (His hand wasn’t supporting him anyway when the ball hit him)
Great crowd in the stadium, good to see
Now we need St Johnstone to make it a nice day all round
Torquemeda: I made my views on the penalty we got clear – it was ridiculous – but the second Efe handball was a stonewall penalty. According to the charisma bypass that is McFadden, the ball hit Efe’s “supporting” arm so it was never a penalty. The ball actually hit Efe’s arm when it was well above the ground FFS. I’m not making a federal case about it but it once again shows how preconceived notions colour the views of Scotland’s brilliant football analysts! Very decent performance. Mooy, Kyogo and Abada excellent, and our two new Japanese bhoys did not put a foot wrong from what I could see in a crowded bar. C’mon St J – complete a good day for us!
Krys1888: Officials ruined this game as a spectacle. Time to sack them. If they can’t get decisions right when two separate officials watch it on a screen then they’re worse than useless.
This is incredibly harsh, it deflected onto his hand and he’s hardly reached out to get the ball, but given some of the penalties we’ve had against us this season for even less…
Etims:That is NEVER a penalty. Honest tae fuck. Abada shoots. Morton player blocks and ball at pace hits Efe’s arm behind his back. No intent at all. Compare and contrast to Goldson deliberately putting hands above head to stop shot….@ScottishFA are pathetic.

Kyogo Furuhashi and Aaron Mooy double up as Celtic thrash Morton

Kyogo Furuhashi hit the 20-goal mark for the campaign as Celtic beat Morton 5-0 in the Scottish Cup. The Japanese striker matched his total for last season thanks to a first-half double in the fourth-round tie at Celtic Park.
Aaron Mooy also hit a brace and David Turnbull scored his second spectacular goal of the week but the game was not without controversy – the opener came courtesy of an extraordinarily harsh VAR decision against the former Celtic defender Efe Ambrose. Morton had enjoyed some decent spells of pressure before Mooy opened the scoring from the spot, and had the chance to go ahead after Callum McGregor shot just wide from long range at the other end.

Lewis Strapp had the sort of chance the 2,000 or so fans in the sold-out away end would have been dreaming about after playing a one-two with Robbie Crawford but the left-back shot straight at Joe Hart from 10 yards. Morton continued to press and Robbie Muirhead could not turn the ball home from close range following Jack Baird’s header.

The game played on for around two minutes after Liel Abada saw a shot blocked but the VAR, Craig Napier, spotted something that had apparently gone unnoticed inside the stadium and eventually notified the referee, Kevin Clancy. Footage showed Abada’s shot came off the foot of Baird and then bounced up and away from goal and skimmed Ambrose’s arm, which was slightly out from his body.
Napier decided it was a “clear and obvious” error from Clancy, who pointed to the spot after studying the incident on his monitor. Mooy sent Brian Schwake the wrong way in the 18th minute and Celtic doubled their lead three minutes later when Ambrose took a heavy touch on the edge of his box and Abada set Furuhashi up to score.

Morton had their own VAR check for a possible penalty when Alistair Johnston closed Strapp down in the act of shooting but there was no offence. Abada and Daizen Maeda threatened before Celtic went further ahead in the 42nd minute when Furuhashi laid the ball back for Turnbull, who found the bottom corner with a first-time side-footed shot from 22 yards.

Furuhashi struck again in stoppage time after Grant Gillespie had taken a fresh-air swipe at Abada’s cutback. The Japanese midfielder Tomoki Iwata came on for his debut at half-time, replacing McGregor. Ambrose survived another VAR check following a more obvious handball – no penalty was given when the ball hit his trailing arm after coming off his own foot.
Morton defended well and were on their way to a second-half shut-out after Abada hit the post and Schwake saved from Turnbull and Johnston. But Mooy added the fifth in the 84th minute when he finished from close range after the substitute Sead Haksabanovic dribbled into the box.
Dougie Imrie rages over Celtic penalty award as Morton boss accuses VAR of ‘killing the game’
Morton manager Dougie Imrie accused VAR of having a ‘killing’ effect on the game after his side were on the wrong end of an inexplicable call in their 5-0 Scottish Cup defeat away to Celtic.

With the tie scoreless, and the visitors having started confidently across the first quarter of an hour, a Leil Abada shot that clipped Jack Baird’s toe made contact with Efe Ambrose’s trailing arm that was in behind his body. It prompted no claims but after play continued, a VAR check was communicated to referee Kevin Clancy, presumably from the official in charge of the system, Craig Napier. The game was then halted for three minutes before he was asked to consult his monitor, awarding a spot-kick after doing so that was converted by Aaron Mooy to change the complexion of the tie. It left Imrie, whose Championship club were experiencing VAR for the first time, despairing.
“I thought we did really well in the first 15 minutes. We had some good opportunities but didn’t take them. Then good old VAR kills the game,” he said. “I don’t know where Efe is supposed to put his hand. It took a deflection but that’s what we need to live with when it comes to VAR. It seems to be every week. I remember watching a game at Tynecastle and it took six minutes to make a decision. It’s killing the fluidity of the game. It must be brutal for players. Certainly, I wouldn’t have wanted to play with it. It takes so long for decisions to be made.

“That’s the third game in a row we’ve had a penalty given against us. You never get a call from the people above to say: ‘Look, we apologise’. Listen, it is what it is. We let ourselves down with conceding a goal so soon after the penalty [but] there needs to be a clear message as to what is and isn’t a penalty going forward.
“Last week in the [Vialay] cup semi I think [Celtic] got away with one with the Kilmarnock foul. Listen, it is there to try and help. I don’t think that situation was there to be helped with. It should have just been a case of playing on. There wasn’t claims from any Celtic player to say it was a penalty. I had a chat from the fourth official [Barry Cook] that I will keep personal because I wouldn’t do that to the guy. Listen, it is a VAR decision to give the penalty so take from that what you want to take.”

Watch the best of the action as Celtic beat Morton
Kyogo Furuhashi moved on to 20 goals for the season as Celtic “stuck to our principles” to sail through to the last 16 of the Scottish Cup with a comfortable win over second-tier Morton.
Aaron Mooy’s controversial penalty, awarded for handball against Efe Ambrose after a VAR review, put Celtic in front and Kyogo quickly doubled their advantage.
David Turnbull’s tidy finish and another from Kyogo had the hosts four up at the break and Mooy struck his second late on.
It means Ange Postecoglou’s side are the first to claim a place in Sunday’s draw.
“It was really professional and we scored some good goals,” said Postecoglou.
“Since the World Cup, Aaron [Mooy’s] been outstanding for us. He’s been a real key contributor. It was great for Dave [Turnbull] to get a start. He worked himself into the game.
“Kyogo’s continuing to score goals and he works really hard. Him and Liel [Abada] in the first half were really good, both with their energy and their pressing, helping us in the defensive side of things and helping us the other way.”

It was Morton who started the brighter in Glasgow’s east end.
The long throw-ins of Lewis Strapp were particularly potent, with the left-back starting and finishing a move that drew a save from Joe Hart and offered encouragement to the travelling fans.
Another Morton set play, a corner, allowed a free header for Jack Baird, but Celtic cleared.
Liel Abada tried to take matters into his own hands at the other end and found his route to goal blocked. However, a lengthy VAR review ensued with Abada’s shot having deflected off Baird on to the arm of former Celtic defender Ambrose.
Referee Kevin Clancy pointed to the spot and Mooy finished confidently. The shaking of Morton manager Dougie Imrie’s head communicated his feelings on the penalty award, which came in one of only three ties this round to use VAR.
Should Celtic have got this penalty against Morton?
Abada and Ambrose were also involved in Celtic’s second, with the defender conceding possession and Kyogo receiving Abada’s pass to finish in the inside right channel.
Strapp could not convert an inviting chance moments later, instead fouling Alastair Johnston in the process and Abada continued to torment Morton with a shot over.
And Turnbull all but ended the contest with a superbly struck shot from the edge of the box after Abada and Kyogo combined to set up the Scotland midfielder.
The hosts just kept coming and Grant Gillespie miscued while attempting to clear Abada’s cross and Kyogo took advantage with a shot high past goalkeeper Brian Schwake.
Postecoglou gave Tomoki Iwata a debut as a half-time replacement for Callum McGregor, and Mooy was inches away from doubling his tally for the day with a strike off a post from close range before Turnbull tested Schwake soon after.
Abada claimed for another handball after his cross was cut out by Ambrose. The ball did strike the defender’s supporting arm as he slid to the ground and a corner was awarded.
Johnston’s first Celtic goal almost arrived after intricate passing with Mooy, Schwake smothering the close-range shot.
But a fifth goal came when Sead Haksabanovic found Mooy in the six-yard box and the Australian finished ruthlessly.
