Summary
“Our recent form’s been built on the back of us being really committed to our defensive work and our defensive structures, and that was evident again.”
Postecoglu (pre match)
Livingston boss David Martindale says Livingston beat Celtic to the league title on points-per-pound basis. Bizarre comment!
“I don’t mind people saying we have the biggest budget because we have the biggest fanbase and we are the biggest club.”
Ange Postecoglou reply to Michael Beale
“Again, another strong performance. We started the game really well and controlled it.”
Ange Postecoglou on the match
“He’s a constant menace. If you’re picking him up he’s always going to be making those runs, he’s always going to be in the areas he’s supposed to be – that’s why he gets his goals.”
Ange Postecoglou on Daizen Maeda
@agentscotland: This has been a dire game of football, Kyogo’s goal was the only moment of genuine quality so far, doubt either set of players or manager will be too fussed though, comfortable win for Celtic, Livingston keeping the goal tally down, get in get out, try not catch the flu.
Celtic TV commentary… “I think they’re checking to see if Joe Hart is offside”
Pads99 of KDS: A horrible night weather wise, but a stroll. The forensic VAR checks for every goal we score at CP is an embarrassment to Scottish football.Taylor becoming a very important player for us and I never thought I would be saying that in the first few months after his signing.Livingston, brutal team to watch.
McStay of KDS: Good win. I enjoyed the first half. There was some lovely link up play particularly down the left hand side. The second was forgettable and baltic. No idea wtf ref Nick Walsh was playing at with that Abada tackle. The boy makes no attempt to play the ball, clatters Abada who goes down hurt and they get a drop ball? Bizarre stuff. Oh looks an absolute unit. Clocked him doing press ups when he was out warming up
MB08 of KDS: Controlled performance with the result never really in doubt. The way we stop teams getting out their own half for long periods is bewitching, we just seem to have more players at points. Taylor, Hatate and Maeda were buzzbombs all night. Every player in the starting 11 was more than decent. Second half was a bit of a non event unfortunately, You just can’t see how any team in the league never mind 4 or 5 are going to take anything from a game against us in the last 14 games. They are just looking to stop it being a drubbing. That may sound arrogant but this is the most professional squad I have seen, there is just no way they will drop standards as a group and they are just brushing teams aside. There is always the chance of a freak result or two but no way we drop points in so many games the way we are playing. Win the 4 remaining games in February and we are set up nicely for what could be a very special season. And Starfelt was blatantly pushed as he went to clear. Some people just seem determined to convince themselves that he is not a top defender at our level despite the evidence. 6 clean sheets in a row, I could get used to that.

Celtic destroy Livingston but David Martindale pre-match budget talk only half of the story

Budgets seem to be all the blether in Scottish football right now.

Livingston manager David Martindale pointed out in advance of his team’s trek to Celtic Park that they would be facing a home side boasting a 40-times higher wage bill. It meant his club were champions every season when calculating points per pound, according to the garrulous Martindale. Flip that measure around, though, and it makes the West Lothian team the 2.5 percenters set against Ange Postecoglou’s title holders. And for spells in Celtic’s 3-0 victory, that figure just about covered the visitors’ possession as they were pulverised. To stretch Celtic’s unbeaten domestic sequence to 20, and extend their 100 per cent record at home in the cinch Premiership wherein they appear an impregnable force to 12 straight games.
Livingston should not be able to compete with the Scottish champions when the latter make the most of the monetary disparities to mould a team brimming with motivation. And that is precisely what Postecoglou has crafted with nous and poise. So much so that even his counterpart Martindale’s well-won reputation for being able to frustrate more illustrious rivals with a diligent defensive framework cut no ice in Glasgow’s east end.
With Daizen Maeda wreaking havoc down the left, Livingston’s goal could have been breached twice in the opening minutes alone. It wasn’t because Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota got themselves into right fankles when merely having to turn in flashed over crosses. However, it never seemed that those misses would prove costly to Celtic as often across the first quarter of an hour there would be no fewer than 18 players jostling in the Livingston penalty box. All but a quartet of the home defenders, indeed.

The matter-of-time breakthrough eventually arrived at the surprisingly late juncture of the half-hour mark. The source may have surprised, but not the manner of the set-up, with Livingston unable to cover all the spaces around their 18-yard box thanks to Alistair Johnston on the right chipping the ball over to Reo Hatate on the left channel. A twist-and-a-turn from the midfielder bought him the yard required to lay the ball back to Greg Taylor, unmarked 14 yards out. Trapping the ball with his left, the full-back then swished with the same limb to send a sublime effort into the far corner.
Three minutes later it was 2-0 thanks to a goal that was the latest oh-my for Ayo Obileye at Celtic Park. In October 2021, the Livingston defender was red carded and gave away a penalty (missed by the now on-his-way-out but still not gone Giorgos Giakoumakis). In late December of last year, he netted an own goal. His unwelcome three card-trick was gifting Maeda a goal by battering an attempted clearance against the wide man from close in only for the result to be that it ricocheted straight past him and into the net.
All that was missing from a monumentally one-sided opening period was the Kyogo Furuhashi moment. That duly came in added time. Sumptuous finishing and sloppy defending fusing to provide the Japanese striker with his 21st goal of the season and 18th in only 22 league outings. A raking long pass from his own half by Matt O’Riley that Stephane Omeonga failed to cut out, set Furuhashi away. Jack Fitzwater tried to stand-up his opponents, but the Japanese jack-in-the-box breezed past him before slotting in with typical finesse. Livingston’s success of the evening – apart from Bruce Anderson’s 38th angle drive that smacked the inside of the upright – was somehow avoiding further punishment as Celtic continued the procession towards their goal in the second half.
David Martindale makes Uber quip, references Celtic v Real Madrid and ‘takes hat off’ to Ange Postecoglou

Livingston manager David Martindale joked that he was tempted to make a quick getaway in a cab after his side found themselves three goals down at half-time in their trip to Celtic Park.

But his frustration on an evening when his team ended up avoiding further punishment was that he had witnessed Ange Postecoglou’s men perform more adroitly against Real Madrid than was required to bag them their second and third goals against his men.
“It was lucky I couldn’t get a reception [on my phone],” he said of his thinking in facing a 3-0 deficit at the interval. “I was trying to get an Uber. I think it’s containment at that point. Are we going to come here and score three goals? Are we going to come here and score four goals? It’s all about going and getting the next goal. When you go in at half-time, it’s about getting their heads lifted and don’t concede. The next 45 minutes is making sure we don’t concede but can you get the next goal? We never got that goal to get the impetus to get us up the park. But I’m not kidding anyone on. Celtic are three up, they are coasting, they are dominating the ball. They probably took their foot off the gas slightly. The game becomes a bit easier for them.
“Celtic were worthy winners. I thought they played some nice football at times. It was a really difficult game for us to lay a glove on them. But I did think we gifted them two goals. The second and third goals we’ve got to do a lot better defensively. They’ve got international players. I’ve seen them do [what they did to us with their rotations] against Real Madrid – they were probably in that game for 60 minutes [before losing 3-0 than they were tonight]. You’ve got to take your hat off to Ange. What he’s done at Celtic, he’s done it incredibly well. It’s all right having money. It’s how you spend it and then it’s how you coach the players you bring in.”
Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou plays down Callum McGregor injury concern – but takes umbrage as ‘lucky’ inference revisited
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou maintained he did not have added concerns over a first-half injury scare during his side’s 3-0 win over Livingston because the casualty was captain and mainstay Callum McGregor.

The midfielder was forced to change his shorts after sustaining a bloody nose quarter of an hour in as the result of a clash with Bruce Anderson. The stoppage for the player to receive treatment witnessed an eerie hush descend on the stadium. Minds no doubt casting back to McGregor being forced to play the final three months of last season in a face mask because of a cheekbone fracture. Postecoglou, though, took a relaxed view of the incident when asked if McGregor being stricken induced particular worries.
“I am worried about all of them, mate. I love them all the same. I don’t want any of them to get hurt,” said the Australian. “But we realised fairly early that he had got a bang on the nose and a bit of blood was coming out. But it was nothing to worry about, he was fine.”
There were some suggestions that McGregor may have broken his nose but Postecoglou did not seem especially troubled by that possibility either. “No. I didn’t ask him, I wouldn’t ask him,” he said, when asked if he knew if that was the case for the 28-year-old. “If he did he would be up there tomorrow for training, no problem.”
Celtic’s barrage that produced three first-half goals appeared to involve them enjoying a break when Daizen Maeda, closing down Ayo Obileye inside the six-yard box, earned his team’s second through the defender smacking the ball against him to result in it ricocheting back into the net. Postecoglou took umbrage at the implication the strike could be considered to have been of the lucky variety.
“You love that word don’t you? It’s just so easy… How many runs does Daizen make in a game?” said the Celtic manager, referencing the “lucky” description of him for his spending power by Rangers manager Michael Beale that he has regularly revisited in tongue-and-cheek fashion. “He is constantly in those areas. Tonight there was a couple more times when he just lacked a little bit of composure in the front third. He is always there and it is an enormous effort to always be there and that is why he gets his goals. Obviously I have known Daizen for a little while now and he always get goals and sometimes he gets goals which people will say, for want of a better word, fortuitous. But on the back of him just working his backside off every time we get the ball. He gets his rewards for it.”

Celtic v Livingston
Greg Taylor’s crisp strike opened the scoring for Celtic
Celtic maintained their nine-point lead in the Scottish Premiership after beating Livingston.
Ange Postecoglou’s side blitzed their visitors in the first half, with Greg Taylor netting the first with a sweet strike across the deck and Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi both converting one of a plethora of chances.
The onslaught eased after the break but Celtic strolled to victory, with Livingston’s only real threat coming when Bruce Anderson struck the woodwork from an acute angle.
Celtic absolutely smothered their visitors. This was a fantastic, unrelenting display, particularly first half, which ought to have brought more goals.
Livingston struggled to hold any possession at all, never mind creep up the pitch to threaten other than one moment in the first half.
It was a one-way street for Celtic, a direct result of them dominating the ball but winning it back instantaneously if they lost it. That was rare.

The first threat came when Jota tried to thread the ball in front of the onrushing Kyogo, but the ball carried a touch too much weight.
The Portuguese winger then somehow contrived to miss from a few yards when Maeda showed brilliant pace and poise to flash the ball across the six-yard box but there was no connection with the goal gaping.
Just when you thought Livingston were about to frustrate their hosts, Reo Hatate gathered in the box, laid it back to the onrushing Taylor, in a now familiar advanced inside-left position, and he fired across Shamal George into the corner.
The second followed quickly. Livingston just could not get a decisive clearance and when they finally tried one, the ball cannoned off the onrushing Maeda and home. His persistence paid off and Celtic were off and running.
Livingston did manage one scare on the almost anonymous Joe Hart’s goal when Anderson seized on a slip, but his shot cracked a post and the follow up fell wide. There ended Livingston’s threat and any hope of a revival.
Celtic’s third was as simple as inevitable. Matt O’Riley launched an accurate ball upfield for Kyogo. He had Jack Fitzwater for company, but bobbed and weaved towards the box before placing his 21st goal of the season into the net.
The second half was a procession that lacked the killer touch with Celtic constantly probing and Livingston staying stoic in adversity.
They held firm to stop more damage with the result determined in the opening 45.
Player of the match – Daizen Maeda
Daizen Maeda
You could argue for any number of Celtic players, but Maeda stood out once again with his blistering pace and unstoppable energy down the flank causing all sorts of problems
Dominant Celtic suffocate Livingston – analysis
Postecoglou has been suggesting again of late that he wants his side to finish the season even stronger, something he demanded last term. He is getting a response to that expectation once again.
Celtic were utterly dominant. They went at Livingston from the first and, despite taking longer than expected to break through, the outcome never seemed in doubt. It could and should have been a much greater margin.
Livingston were well organised but lacked threat other than their only glaring chance which passed them by and their hopes went with it. They’ll look to get back to the form they had coming in to this having been unbeaten in 2023.
Celtic’s domestic consistency is frightening. No league home losses under Postecoglou since his arrival and an unbeaten, almost exclusively winning, run since the loss to St Mirren in September has them motoring nicely towards the title.
What they said
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “We started the game really well, we knew we would have a lot of possession but it was what we did with it and I thought we were always probing and asking questions.
“Second half, Livingston didn’t really open up so it wasn’t like we were going to get bags of chances. I still thought we controlled it well, we just never got the goal.”
Livingston manager David Martindale: “I was disappointed to go in 3-0 down at half-time, because other than the first one, I thought they were avoidable goals, but you have to credit Celtic, they put us under huge pressure.
“Ange has his team playing some very, very nice football. They are good on the eye, it must be a good time to be a Celtic fan right now.”
