Summary

Asked about his proudest Celtic moment, he said: “The day I was appointed. All you can ever ask for in life, and particularly somebody like myself, is an opportunity. Being given the opportunity to manage this great football club (Celtic) was the best day for me.”

Sore Loser Hearts boss Robbie Neilson is questioning referee Alan Muir’s decision not to send off Alexandro Bernabei in their 3-1 defeat to Celtic.

“We had to work hard for it.”

Twitter:

Joebloggscity of thecelticwiki: Credit to Hearts as they came out and played some football unlike others just playing 10-0-0 formations etc. Decent goal from them too. Hearts manager spoilt it with some nonsense gripes afterwards, claiming Bernabei should have been sent off!
But what a goal from Haksabanovic to seal the match!

Etims: Poor first half. Game changed when we went ahead. Jota brilliant in chasing back to fight and win possession leading up to goal. After that all #Celtic. Hakers with a beauty for 3rd. Didn’t play anywhere near our best but you get that over the course of a season. Job done

jbj712 of KDS:Always good to beat that mob. Apart from their goal did Hearts have any attempts on target that made Hart actually make a save?
A very good solid performance against a shower of cloggers who were particularly adept at off the ball fouling to stop CFC players making runs ably assisted by the MIBs were happy to ignore it.
The wee Aussie guy should have been booked for persistent fouling in the first 20 minutes and if he had dived in on a sevco player at Ibrox the way he did on Bernabei he would have seen red as it was high two feet off the ground and at pace he was out of control but it wasn’t even a foul!
Three excellent goals all well worked from open play.
The rest of the league is so poor that Sevco will go on winning until we dismantle them in April.
Well done to all who played and let’s hope wee Maeda isn’t badly injured as we could be doing with his mental and physical toughness on Saturday!

Kyogo Furuhashi hits 20-goal mark as Celtic see off Hearts

Celtic 3 Hearts 1

Kyogo Furuhashi took his cinch Premiership goal tally to 20 for the season as Celtic came from behind to beat Hearts 3-1.

The Japanese forward put the home side ahead on the hour mark to make it 25 in all competitions.

Hearts had taken an early lead through Josh Ginnelly before Daizen Maeda levelled. Both first-half goals were initially disallowed for offside before being awarded following the intervention of VAR, and both goalscorers went off injured before half-time.

Celtic were not at their fluent best in the first half but dominated the second. They clinically punished Hearts after winning the ball back and breaking quickly for Furuhashi to put them on their way to an 18th consecutive domestic home win as they maintained their nine-point lead over Rangers.

Substitute Sead Haksabanovic wrapped up the three points with a glorious goal in the 84th minute as he cut in from the left side of the box and curled into the top corner from 18 yards.

The teams will meet again in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals on Saturday at Tynecastle and both managers made changes with the schedule in mind.

Celtic brought in Anthony Ralston, Alexandro Bernabei, Matt O’Riley and Liel Abada with Greg Taylor dropping out of the 20-man squad.

Hearts made six changes with the likes of Lawrence Shankland, Alex Cochrane and Robert Snodgrass absent.

Ange Postecoglou was visibly frustrated with some of his players’ decisions to pass the ball back in the opening stages and his mood worsened when Hearts took a sixth-minute lead.

Jorge Grant found Andy Halliday in space up the left flank and the former Rangers player delivered an inviting far-post cross which Ginnelly converted with a diving header. Replays showed the forward was level with Carl Starfelt when the ball came in.

Celtic took until midway through the half before creating clear-cut chances. Abada scuffed a shot wide and Furuhashi got underneath a header in quick succession.

The equaliser soon came after Ralston sent Furuhashi into the channel. The forward delivered a low cross to his fellow Japan international Maeda to slide in and finish from six yards. Furuhashi was flagged offside but Halliday had played him on.

Maeda had collided with Zander Clark when scoring and was soon replaced by Jota but the Japanese contingent was soon bolstered when Hearts forward Yutaro Oda came on for Ginnelly.

Both sides had chances before the break. Joe Hart saved from Grant and Alan Forrest while Jota hit the post with a bouncing effort and Ralston was not far over the bar with an acrobatic overhead kick.

Aaron Mooy and Cameron Carter-Vickers were off target with efforts after the break before Jota began the move that led to Celtic’s second goal by dispossessing Cammy Devlin just inside the Hearts half. The Portuguese winger played the ball inside for Mooy, who played a perfect pass to feed the clever movement of Furuhashi, who shot high past Clark.

Abada soon had the chance to set up Furuhashi after Ralston’s excellent pass inside the full-back but the winger sent his low cross into Clark’s hands.

Hearts lost substitute Oda to injury with Garang Kuol the latest to lead the line. The Australian had a shot well blocked by Carter-Vickers in a rare second-half Hearts attack before Haksabanovic put the game beyond doubt.

‘We still don’t see them’ – Ange Postecoglou reveals what irritated him about Celtic’s 3-1 win over Hearts

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou was left irritated by what he considered was his team’s failure to maximise the talents of Kyogo Furuhashi – despite his team’s 3-1 over Hearts on an evening when the forward produced a sparkling 60th minute finish to claim a 25th goal of the season.

Unusually demonstrative as the Tynecastle men caused problems early on that claimed them an early lead, the Australian could be seen throwing up his hands on the touchline. And, despite factoring in alterations to his line-up that brought the first starts for full-backs Alexandro Bernabei and Anthony Ralston for months for his team’s lack of fluency, he did not seem to consider these excused the failure to be on the same wavelength as Furuhashi.

“That was a bit of a frustrating thing because I just don’t think we used him at all tonight,” said Postecoglou, who praised his team’s “mentality” and the quality of the goals that allowed them, ultimately, to run out comfortable winners. “He makes fantastic runs and sometimes I get really frustrated that after 18 to 20 minutes we still don’t see them. The beauty of it is that he doesn’t get frustrated, he keeps making those runs. When we do find him in those areas he’s a quality player, both with his assist for the first goal [in the 25th minute that set-up Daizen Maeda] and the finish for the second. He’s an outstanding contributor.”

Maeda was forced off after colliding with keeper Zander Clark when netting the equaliser, and Postecoglou was unable to make any definitive call on the attacker’s availability for the club’s Scottish Cup quarter-final tie this weekend that will be a return meeting with Hearts, this time at Tynecastle.

“He got a knock on his knee when he scored the goal,” said the 57-year-old. “He’s a bit sore now and we’ll just have to wait and see. I don’t think it’s anything serious, but there’s another short turnaround to Saturday so we’ll just have to see how he is.”

Postecoglou’s 100th game in charge was acknowledged in inevitably rapturous fashion at the conclusion of their 12th straight win, and wasn’t taken lightly by him. “I appreciate the support I have had from the fans since the day I arrived,” he said. “I haven’t felt anything but support, even when it wasn’t that evident what we were doing. They got behind me and the team and that has never been lost on me. I want to repay that and I try to do that on a daily basis.”

How Celtic recovered from Hearts inflicting a season first on them amid Parkhead pandemonium

No-one seemed to have told the combants at Celtic Park that their cup tie was still four days away.

Alright, so the outcome was as anticipated, with Ange Postecoglou’s 100th game in charge extending another 100…in the the form of the percentage success rate for his team at home in the Premiership. The product of a 3-1 win that also preserved their nine-point lead at the top of the table. Yet, before Celtic took charge in the second period there was such pandemonium, the feel for 45 minutes wasn’t just the knock-your-pan-out of the knock-out encounter. It was hammer and tongs…and more tongs.

The tickling aspect of it all was that observers surveyed the Celtic and Hearts line-ups – with four and six changes respectively from their weekend wins – and concluded both Postecolgou and Robbie Neilson were looking to hold some key personnel in reserve for the clubs’ Scottish Cup quarter-final tie at Tynecastle on Saturday. Instead, the two sides left everything out on the pitch in a crackers opening period. Frantic and open, that was down to Hearts going after their hosts as no other team has domestically in the east end of Glasgow across the Australian’s now 100-game tenure. Instant reward for that intent resulted in Celtic conceding a goal from open play inside the first 10 minutes. As they hadn’t in any competition this season. Within a quarter of an hour they had struck back. VAR was involved in both as the system seemed to conduct so many checks, you half expected it would start poking its nose into pie provisions in the snackbar. And, for good measure, both scorers were lost to injury after entangling with the opposing keepers before the inevitably elongated had come to a close.

Picking the bones out of it all was a head-hurting pursuit. The specifics amounted to Andy Halliday tearing down the left flank seven minutes in and swinging over a cross that Josh Ginnelly nodded downward to give his team a shock lead. A possible offside meant an interminable VAR delay before it was given, with that sequence repeating itself when 25 minutes in Anthony Ralston – in his first start this year – sent Kyogo Furuhashi down the left and he squared for Daizen Maeda to slam in. His momentum causing him to clatter into Zander Clark, forcing him to be replaced by Jota. For his part, Ginnelly’s game-ending clash with Joe Hart came approaching the interval.

Hearts’ ability to go toe-to-toe with their irrepressible hosts waned from the early stages of a second period. A Celtic that had been unsettled by the Tynecastle club, found their rhythm to take them apart. In glorious fashion, with a 25th goal of the season for Furuhashi on the hour mark sublimely crafted and finished. The genesis came from Jota winning the ball on touchline and playing inside to Aaron Mooy. The Australian in turn produced the sweetest reverse pass that Celtic’s clinical striker, with one sleek touch, delightfully arrowed high into the net.

Neilson’s men looked increasingly weary, even as both teams committed a raft of substitutions. Unlike their visitors, Celtic’s replacements brought a fresh verve to their play with Sead Haksabanovic displaying technical brilliance five minutes from time when he glided off the left flank and curled an edge of the box effort into the far top corner as if the ball were a guided missile. The end to an engrossing, explosive encounter, come Saturday it might be a case of hanging on to hats and all other loose clothing.

Robbie Neilson fumes over Celtic tackle as Hearts boss claims ‘decapitation’ required for red card at Parkhead

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson claimed that only “decapitation” would lead to a red card against Celtic in their home stadium after being left flabbergasted by VAR’s operator Nick Walsh’s handling of a heavy Alexandro Bernabei challenge on Nathaniel Atikinson.

The challenge in question came 28 minutes into his team’s 3-1 loss. The scores then tied at 1-1 after a vibrant start for the visitors.

Referee Alan Muir did not book the Argentine for stretching and studding into the leg of his opponent before there was the announcement of a VAR check for possible red card offence, that subsequently led to no further action. A sequence of events that had Neilson despairing.

“I thought it was a shambles, the whole thing,” said the Tynecastle manager. “The first time I’ve ever seen no yellow card but it goes to a VAR for serious foul play. I’m sure Alan will see it tonight and be disappointed by his own decision and, secondly, that he wasn’t asked to go and look at the VAR screen because I think if he goes and sees it, it’s maybe a different decision and a different outcome.

“Usually when you come to Parkhead, you need decapitation before they get a red card against them. It wasn’t to be today. It was nearly a leg off. A really bad tackle and the referee never booked him, and it went to VAR. Look, it’s happened, I’m sure Alan will be really disappointed by it. It’s not really his fault. My opinion, he’s got to at least book him. But you’ve got to think VAR’s got to go ‘Alan go and have a look at that, see what you think.’ And it might have been different. You will all see it and go….hmmm.”

Celtic marked Ange Postecoglou’s 100th game in charge with a battling comeback win over Hearts to preserve their nine-point Scottish Premiership lead.

Much-changed Hearts – missing regulars including top-scorer Lawrence Shankland – stunned the champions through Josh Ginnelly’s stooping header and matched their hosts for the opening hour.

But Daizen Maeda slid in a first-half equaliser and Celtic ramped up the pressure with Kyogo Furuhashi lashing in before Sead Haksabanovic’s stunning finish sealed it.

Celtic’s eighth straight league win edges them closer to a second title in succession, while Hearts’ five-point cushion in third place remains intact after Hibernian’s thrashing by Rangers.

Postecoglou has never suffered a home defeat in domestic football as Celtic manager, but Hearts threatened to ruin his big night with a positive approach that disrupted the hosts’ rhythm.

When Celtic needed a hero, Kyogo again stepped up. The striker’s 25th goal of the season was an unerring finish – and stemmed from Jota winning possession from Cammy Devlin – to calm the growing unease among the home support.

Postecoglou had shuffled his pack too and stand-in right-back Anthony Ralston – making his first start since December – was caught out as Hearts seized the early initiative.

Andy Halliday galloped into space and delivered a peach of a cross for the stooping Ginnelly to plant a header past Joe Hart at the far post. Ginnelly was initially flagged offside but a VAR check confirmed the goal.

Celtic gradually roused themselves. Liel Abada scuffed wide and Kyogo headed over before Maeda slid in the equaliser from his fellow Japan striker’s cross after Ralston released the striker down the right-hand channel.

Maeda had been Celtic’s brightest operator, but soon departed injured and was followed by Hearts scorer Ginnelly before half-time.

Maeda’s replacement, Jota, rattled a post with a bouncing effort from distance and Ralston sent an overhead kick too high, but Celtic were far from their fluent best until Hearts’ high-pressing exertions took a toll in the final half hour.

Kyogo broke the visitors’ resistance and substitute Haksabanovic curled a delicious strike high into the net to leave Celtic needing seven wins from their remaining 10 games to guarantee the title.

Celtic dig deep to quell Hearts – analysis

Celtic have blown plenty of teams away this season, but had to show grittier qualities to wear down a vibrant Hearts.

Perhaps with Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie against Hearts in mind, Postecoglou made four changes – including both full-backs – and it contributed to his side’s stilted start as they struggled for cohesion.

However, their strength in depth helped turn the tide and Haksabanovic will hope his memorable strike earns him a start at the weekend.

Greg Taylor is a fitness doubt for that tie, but Alexandro Bernabei did little to enhance his case to dislodge the Scotland left-back, while the impressive Maeda’s loss would be a further blow.

Hearts deserve credit for their for their brave approach and they gave Celtic a taste of their own medicine for long spells. Pressing high and refusing to drop deep, Robbie Neilson’s men were neat in possession and threatening on the counter.

The pace of Ginnelly was a potent weapon before his injury-enforced departure.

However, Hearts’ couldn’t keep up the ferocious tempo and they will rue the second goal when Devlin was caught in possession and Celtic ruthlessly took advantage.

Still, the performance will strengthen Hearts’ belief they can progress in the cup at Celtic’s expense. The return of Shankland – who Neilson rates as “touch and go” – plus fellow regulars Barrie McKay and Robert Snodgrass would further bolster those hopes.
What did they say?

Celtic manger Ange Postecoglou: “We had to work hard for the points as we weren’t at our fluent best.

“We looked disjointed at the start and had to earn it, but the boys showed have again shown a really strong mentality and scored three excellent goals to get the job done.”

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson: “There’s a lot of positives to take. For 80 minutes we were outstanding.

“The players put Celtic under a massive amount of pressure and you could see the crowd starting to turn. But we got beaten and we want to come here and win.”
