Summary

BBC Radio Scotland: “Celtic’s problem is that they have too many good players.”

Ange on Reo Hatate: “He won’t be out long term. It’s just a case of making sure he’s ready to go.” Ange also determined to finish season in style & we will not stop: “Why should we? I mean, there are 7 games to go so why would we want to waste any one of them?”

“Coming here isn’t easy and we’ll hope to make it as hard as possible for them…”
Kilmarnock player Danny Armstrong

Ange Postecoglou reckons Yuki Kobayashi has barely put a foot wrong at Celtic and says the Japanese centre-half is up for the challenge of battling Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers for a regular starting place.

AP of KDS:
Kilmarnock won that second half 0-0, we didn’t lose it.
Another 4 goals, an actual penalty without VAR, a goal against after a shoulder to shoulder that McGregor lost (but in the second half resulted in Killie getting fouls, which killed the tempo), 3 points, and only 7 points left for the title to be official.
An easy, (tedious for 45mins) win.
Take that until we’ve got the 7 points.
The non-regulars looked decent, so no worries about them for the future.
Felt sorry for Oh a bit, as he had to cope with it being a game to suit the old school gerrintaerum types in thr second half.

jbj712 of KDS:
Fabulous first 40 minutes which destroyed Killie.
Hopefully no injuries on a disgrace of a pitch.
Another referee who only sees CFC challenges as fouls.
Another greetin hun opposition manager.
Good times my friends and comrades all

E-Tims @ETimsNet · First class opening 45. Brilliant to watch. Poor fare in the second half. Not going to be critical as would happily have taken 4-1 pre-game. Ange will no doubt let the players know about high standards. Vata and Summers on. Academy players. Great to see. 7 pts to win 2IAR #Celtic Special praise for Iwata and Kobayashi. Both of them were excellent. Their touch, awareness, movement and passing is top notch. Perhaps getting a glimpse into team progression next season as we plan ahead to improve in Europe, where those attributes are vital. #Celtic

Highland__Paddy @Highland__paddy ·  Dinosaur tactics from an opposition manager contributed to Kilmarnock letting in those goals at the start of the game . Kick and rush football, getting too tight to players because the players were too fired up . Put them to the sword in the second half Celtic , make him suffer.

Celtic Wiki @TheCelticWiki ·  All four Japanese players who started today have been outstanding.

Celtic’s Sunday stroll in Ayrshire: the boa constrictor, Ange conducts fans, why coaches deserve so much praise

Celtic are making this title-winning malarkey look oh-so-easy. Another week, another opponent, another straightforward victory on their march to the Premiership crown. This 4-1 triumph away at Kilmarnock took their points tally to 91 and they broke the 100-goal mark in this match.

But as their manager Ange Postecoglou said at the start of this month, winning with Celtic is not easy. It may look it, but this type of result is the fruits of much labour, session after session on the training ground, honing their high-tempo, ultra aggressive, attacking game. For 27 minutes of this encounter at Rugby Park, Celtic were off-the-charts good, scoring four goals and leaving Kilmarnock out cold on the canvas. Had this been a boxing bout, the referee would have sent everyone home for lunch. To their credit, Killie managed to stop the haemorrhaging and make the rest of the match a slight contest, scoring one themselves. However, the damage had all been done.

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes felt it was like watching a “car crash” for half-an-hour. Postecoglou saw it differently, saying Celtic played some of their best football of the season. It takes two to tango and as horrendous as Kilmarnock were in that spell, their visitors were scintillating. There is no match for this kind of football in Scotland. Kyogo Furuhashi opened the scoring on seven minutes and 20 minutes later it was 4-0, with Daizen Maeda netting and Matt O’Riley bagging a brace. Furuhashi even hit the post with a penalty in that period. It brought back memories of when Celtic completely filleted Dundee United 9-0 in August.

Kilmarnock are made of sterner stuff than the Tangerines and McInnes deserves credit in making substitutions just after the fourth goal that stiffened his team up. Playing with two forwards in Christian Doidge and Kyle Vassell, the hosts actually started brightly and were keen on taking the game to Celtic. But what McInnes had not banked on was a moment of complete madness from his midfielder Fraser Murray, who had the ball close to Celtic’s corner flag, decided to take possession back towards the half-way line and then play a moronic pass to defender Joe Wright. He weighted it wrong, Furuhashi pounced, drove towards goal, cut back on to his left foot and finished past Sam Walker. Murray’s crestfallen face said it all.

Like a boa constrictor with its prey in its grip, Celtic tightened the squeeze. Kilmarnock were suffocated. Five minutes later, Alistair Johnston stood a cross up to the back post and Maeda headed home. The boos came from the Killie fans. Six minutes later, a precision pass from Greg Taylor found O’Riley in the box and he sent the ball high into the net. 3-0. Then Doidge tripped Taylor in the box on 22 minutes. Penalty, no doubt. Furuhashi sent Walker the wrong way but his effort hit the base of the post. He smiled. He knew it would not be costly. Five minutes later, Murray sclaffed a clearance back into his own box, Killie couldn’t recover and O’Riley netted. 4-0. It was the third time Celtic had scored four in the first half of a match this season and Maeda’s effort was the 100th of the league campaign. A reminder: we are still in April.

All this was done without three regular starters. Given the nature of Kilmarnock’s synthetic pitch, Postecoglou took no chances with defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, midfielder Aaron Mooy and forward Jota. Yuki Kobayashi came in for his third start since joining from Vissel Kobe, while Tomoki Iwata strolled it in midfield and Sead Haksabanovic was a menace on the right flank. The way these players can assimilate seamlessly to the way Celtic play is a testament to the coaching staff and how they prepare this group of players. Kobayashi, up against the physical Vassell, looked completely at ease.

The same cannot be said of Kilmarnock right now. They are in a right dogfight at the bottom, sitting 11th and only a point clear of Ross County at the bottom. McInnes can at least take some solace from his team not doing at Dundee United and completely submitting. The introduction of Alan Power to the midfield after the fourth goal helped and they got a consolation right on half time when Liam Donnelly netted. In the second half, Luke Chambers nearly added another but Joe Hart pulled off an excellent save and they were competitive. Easy to be like that once the damage is done, though. As McInnes said afterwards, games against Celtic won’t decide their fate, but it will be a nervy end to the season for all of a Rugby Park persuasion.

Conversely, no league jitters for Celtic. As written many times before, it is just a question of when they will be crowned champions with a 12-point lead over Rangers with six games to play. Their second-half display was bitty, Furuhashi replaced at the interval by Hyeong-yu Oh, whose South Korea manager Jurgen Klinsmann was in the stand to watch. Oh is far more physical than Furuhashi and had one moment where he came close to scoring. McInnes also claimed he should have been sent off for a high boot on Donnelly. Klinsmann called the 22-year-old “a special talent” and will hope he gets more game-time at Celtic, but with the frighteningly good form Furuhashi is in, that seems unlikely. The Japanese is now on 29 goals for the season.
Kyogo Furuhashi missed a penalty – but it mattered little as Celtic cantered to victory.

Postecoglou used the meandering conclusion to this contest to hand a debut to 18-year-old midfielder Ben Summers. It was that kind of afternoon. At full time, he did his usual, saluting the fans for a good two minutes. As he walked off the pitch, the chant of “champions again” rang out from his adoring crowd. Like a conductor, Postecoglou lifted his right hand and kept them singing. He knows it’s close now. Champions again. Nobody is stopping this Celtic team.

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes claims Celtic player should have been red carded after ‘car crash start’

Celtic raced into an unassailable 4-0 lead by the 27-minute mark with goals from Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and a double from Matt O’Riley. Furuhashi also struck the post with a penalty in that period, with a slack back-pass from Kilmarnock midfielder Fraser Murray starting off the rout. Murray also sliced a clearance that led to Celtic’s fourth goal, while the rest of the team’s defending left a lot to be desired. While the hosts recovered with the aid of two substitutions – Murray was one player taken off – and scored themselves through Liam Donnelly, the damage had been done, with Killie sitting 11th in the Premiership as the relegation battle intensifies.

“Everything you want wasn’t there like a strong start,” said McInnes. “The first goal was such a sloppy one. It was a chance to be positive and the ball should have been in their box. The decision that was made to be negative in that situation, it’s not what we wanted. So we gifted Celtic and it was something similar to the start of the season where we played a part in the downfall with the cheapness of goals. Celtic are good enough to punish us. There was a 20 minute car crash watching it unfold. I don’t like making early changes but [Christian] Doidge came off because we needed an extra midfielder and Fraser was really struggling after his mistake.

“I want players to show personality and courage to back themselves. Sometimes when you lose a goal your eagerness to make up for it means you start jumping out the slots and thinking that’s the best answer. But it made it worse and Celtic played in between us. That 20-minute period was so difficult to watch. The changes helped us, we got a goal before half-time and I felt we were at least getting something against them. The extra midfielder helped us and we showed pride in our performance and I thought we were the better team in the second half. It was the team I wanted to see from the start.”

McInnes accepted that a second-half red card would not have altered the outcome of the match but was left perplexed by VAR not getting involved when Celtic replacement forward Oh challenged Donnelly with a high boot. Kilmarnock lost striker Kyle Vassell to a sending off against Hibs recently in what McInnes deemed to be a similar incident and he replied if the South Korean merited a red card: “He did. I’m not looking for a red but likewise Kyle shouldn’t be a red at Easter Road. Where is consistency? You see the still and he has his boot in Donnelly’s face. It’s not a red card in same way I didn’t think Vassell was but VAR looking at same incident? It wouldn’t have helped today but if it’s consistency we’re not getting it from VAR. It was more dangerous than Kyle.”

Ange Postecoglou explains why Celtic played ‘best football of season’ and singles out ‘really good’ newcomer

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou feels his team played some of their best football of the season during the 4-1 win over Kilmarnock and hailed his players’ desire to sprint to the title following this latest victory in the cinch Premiership.

Celtic were untouchable in the first 27 minutes of this encounter in Ayrshire, scoring four times through Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Matt O’Riley (2), while Furuhashi also hit the post with a penalty. While their level dipped for the rest of the match, with Kilmarnock recovering from a dreadful start and some individual errors, Postecoglou was full of praise as his team regained their 12-point lead over Rangers, moved to within seven points of retaining their league crown and broke through the 100-goal barrier.

“First half the boys were outstanding,” said Postecoglou. “It was some of the best football we’ve played all year with the way we moved the ball and ourselves around the pitch. After last week’s win [in the Old Firm derby against Rangers] you’re looking at where the focus is. But it was important we started with a good intent. Second half we got a bit sloppy and disjointed and could have defended a bit more. It shows there’s a real good understanding within the group of the kind of team we want to be. You can talk in cliches about taking every game as they come but they handled it in a responsible manner.”

Asked whether he believed his team now wants to sprint to the title, Postecoglou responded: “I think so, and it is important, because in a perfect world, you design your team to play its best football at the most important part [of the season]. That’s not discounting the fact that you’ve got to be in this position to start with, so we’ve had to be pretty strong all year, but this is the time of year when things get decided and you want to be playing your best football then. I thought the attitude was first-rate, it’s not an easy pitch to play on. It’s a difficult opponent desperate for points. You can come here and try to get three points and move on but we came with an intent to play our football.”
Ange Postecoglou salutes the Celtic fans after the 4-1 victory over Kilmarnock.
Ange Postecoglou salutes the Celtic fans after the 4-1 victory over Kilmarnock.

Postecoglou made three changes to his starting XI, with key men Cameron Carter-Vickers, Aaron Mooy and Jota all making way for Yuki Kobayashi, Tomoki Iwata and Sead Haksabanovic due to the plastic surface. It was only Kobayashi’s third full 90 minutes since joining from Vissel Kobe in January and the manager was pleased with the 22-year-old’s mature display.“I thought he was really good,” added Postecoglou. “It wasn’t easy to play on the surface and they were physical. It’s been a different kind of period for us with a game a week. I’ve got a squad that can take two games a week. We’ve got to fill those gaps working hard at training. The boys have done that. Training is really competitive. They’re coming in ready to go even though we’ve not had the games to do it. It was good to get him 90 minutes but in all the games he’s played he’s hardly put a foot wrong and he’s growing as a player.”

Jurgen Klinsmann breaks silence on Celtic visit and hails ‘very special talent’

Jurgen Kilnsmann has revealed he travelled to Kilmarnock to watch Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh after being blown away by the South Korea striker while on international duty.

Oh earned his second and third caps in the 2-2 draw with Colombia and 2-1 defeat to Uruguay last month and was cruelly denied a spectacular first goal for his country in the latter match due to a marginal offside.

It was the first matches of the Klinsmann tenure after the 58-year-old was appointed the new head coach of South Korea in February and he is now travelling Europe to cast an eye over his players.

The German legend had to bide his time to get a glimpse of Oh in action after Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou listed him among the substitutes for the Premiership match at Rugby Park, but he was introduced at half-time with his side already 4-1 ahead.

Oh was unable to get himself on the scoresheet – and picked up a booking for a high boot – but he helped see out the victory in a goalless second half as Celtic restored their 12 point lead over Rangers at the top of the standings.

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Kilnsmann told Sky Sports: “I came to Europe for a 10-day trip to see Korean players all over the place. I was at Spurs yesterday to see Sonny [Son Heung-min] and now I get the chance to see a very young striker playing for Celtic.

“Even if he comes off the bench hopefully he gets some minutes from Ange. He’s a very special talent. I had him with me in the last two matches there when we played Colombia and Uruguay two weeks ago and he left a very, very positive impression so I’m curious to see him here.

“When you have the opportunity to play for massive club like Celtic, it’s not easy for young players, obviously he’s fighting for minutes, but it’s a big learning curve ad I can only recommend young players to come to Europe and give it a try, give it their best and see where it goes.”

Celtic were in full flow when Daizen Maeda headed their second goal

Celtic are seven points away from retaining the Scottish Premiership after a first-half goal blitz against relegation-threatened Kilmarnock.

The visitors were four up within 27 minutes after Kyogo Furuhashi swept them in front with ease, Daizen Maeda headed a quick second and Matt O’Riley struck twice.

Liam Donnelly got one back at the end of a first half that also featured a missed penalty by Kyogo, with neither side finding the net after the interval.

South Korea head coach Jurgen Klinsmann was in attendance at Rugby Park hoping to see Oh Hyeon-Gyu and the striker replaced Kyogo at half-time.

Kilmarnock remain in the relegation play-off spot, a point above bottom side Ross County and below Dundee United on goal difference.

Celtic re-establish a 12-point advantage over Rangers and, with a vastly superior goal difference, Ange Postecoglou’s side effectively need two more wins from six games to clinch back-to-back titles.

After Fraser Murray conceded possession, Kyogo turned Joe Wright and raced clear on the right. The striker turned back and, as the Kilmarnock defence stood off, struck a low shot past Sam Walker for goal number 29 of the season. Great striker play but the league’s top scorer was afforded too much space.

Celtic’s second was well worked. Sead Haksabanovic released Alistair Johnston in the inside right channel and his chip was nodded back across goal into the net by Maeda.

There was no let-up from the visitors as O’Riley tested Walker at his left-hand post.

But the midfielder scored with his next attempt on 18 minutes, receiving Greg Taylor’s incisive pass and placing the ball low into the net with Killie again too passive.

Christian Doidge’s foolish trip on Taylor gave Kyogo the chance to reach the 30 mark from the spot, but the striker’s effort came back off the post and Maeda knocked the rebound wide.

The fourth was not long in coming, though, as Murray’s sliced clearance went backwards into his own box and Danny Armstrong’s header presented the ball for O’Riley to control and finish.

Beleaguered home manager Derek McInnes took action with defender Jeriel Dorsett and midfielder Alan Power sent on in place of midfielder Murray and striker Doidge, the change in shape eventually stemming Celtic’s flow.

And it was the visitors’ turn to err in first-half added time as captain Callum McGregor was robbed by Donnelly inside the box. The Northern Irishman’s first shot was blocked by Joe Hart, so was Armstrong’s but Donnelly retrieved and forced the ball in to reduce the hosts’ arrears.

The second period was far less incident-packed than the first, but Kilmarnock did carve one excellent chance. Armstrong swung in a brilliant cross from the right and Luke Chambers’ header was superbly blocked by Hart.

Oh was active in front of his international manager, trying his best to get across defenders and finding the side netting on one occasion. Team-mates Carl Starfelt, Tomoki Iwata and Johnston also threatened.

Celtic goal hungry again at Rugby Park – analysis

When Celtic visited Rugby Park in August, Celtic were a goal up after seven minutes, three up by half-time and five in front by full-time. The start to this game was eerily familiar for Kilmarnock, with basic errors and lacklustre defending ruling out any possibility of gaining a foothold in the match.

The hosts were always huge underdogs but the ease with which they were bowled over in the opening half-hour was the last thing they need in their battle to avoid the drop, particularly with rivals Dundee United having found form with two wins.

To their credit, Kilmarnock got much closer to their opponents and restricted space in the second half. They now face six games which could define their season.

Comfortable Celtic wins this season are nothing new. Postecoglou’s side have won 9-0, 6-1, 5-0, 5-1 and 4-0 this term, continually rejecting the footballing convention of getting in front and sitting on a lead.

The league leaders need nine more points to reach 100, having moved beyond a century of league goals to 102 for the campaign with this win.
What the managers said

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes: “We help them with the first goal. Some of that type of decision making was really not great. It’s not what we want to see. We were passive after that. Clearly we needed to stop the bleeding. We made the changes and I thought we were instantly better. The second half was just exactly how I wanted us to be.

“I’m determined to get a Kilmarnock team at this club who can beat Celtic and can do so much better than what we showed today. For the time being, our fight isn’t that. Our fight now is to make sure we stay in the league. We’ve got six games against teams we know we can win against.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “Our fist half was outstanding, probably as well as we’ve played all year. Second half, we got a bit sloppy and never got into any rhythm. Overall, knowing the challenge here today, really pleased.

“(O’Riley’s contribution) has been outstanding all year. Good for him to get a couple of goals. Our football was brilliant, everyone was kind of in sync. Our finishing composure, apart from the penalty, was excellent. Disappointing for (Kyogo) that he couldn’t get his goal from the penalty. I’m sure more will come.”
