Trivia
- KO: 19:45 Wednesday; Hibs TV PPV for £12.99; League Match 37 of 38
- Last midweek game of the season.
- Hibs become only the third team domestically to defeat Celtic this season. Sevco drew 2-2 with Hearts; Celtic 7pts ahead but title already wrapped up, and going for the treble v ICT in Scottish Cup final next week. Dundee Utd are effectively relegated with their defeat today and Ross County drawing.
- Kobayashi, Bain and Bernabei back in the team, with many reserves in the side. Both have a terrible game. Scott Bain only a few days ago signed a new three year contract, but two later howlers ruined his match, sad after he was having a great game. Ralston gave away a silly penalty, and Maeda was very irresponsible with his two yellow cards to be sent off.
- Kyogo Furuhashi targeting the Lisbon Lions’ goalscoring record of 111 league goals in 1966-67, with the current squad in need of four more over final two league fixtures.
- Kyogo Furuhashi has been presented with the SPFL Premiership Player of the Season!
- Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy is a target for Hearts in their search for a new manager. He is not expected to move.
- Trongate Title Party: Celtic fan groups call on all fans to gather in Merchant City to celebrate winning the league after final league game on Saturday.
- Real Madrid have added Liverpool’s Andy Robertson to a list of possible replacements and believe they could get him for £40m. Celtic overlooked the player when he was a teenager when he was desperate to play for Celtic.
- Tsoanelo Letsosa: Celtic B midfielder Tsoanelo Letsosa has rejected a new deal at the club & will leave the club this summer. The 18 year old has been at Celtic since he was 12 however he has decided to further his career south of the border.
- Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate & Daizen Maeda on being called up to the Japan National Team.
- Music legend Tina Turner passed away at age of 83. RIP
Summary
“The one thing I do know is this squad are champions… there’s nothing else I need to know… That’s a good feeling.”
Ange Postecoglu
“This is on me, I’m making lots of changes and playing guys who haven’t played in a long time and in many ways, that’s unfair on them but that’s just my way of doing things. This squad has handled the Champions League, is in the final of a cup competition, won another cup competition and won the league… we will strengthen as we always do.”
Ange Postecoglou
MLE of KDS:
I actually thought that first half was better than the previous couple of weeks (caveat doing some heavy lifting there) at least in attack. Haska and Berna looked good on the left, McGregor was contributing well further forward and we were getting Hatate on the ball around the box again which didn’t happen a lot at Ibrox or against St Mirren. Defensive issues on that left side between Berna and Yuki were clear to everyone and Ralston’s limitations seem to be getting more and more obvious with each game he plays.
They came at us in that 2nd half and more than deserved to win by 2 clear goals. Even with being down to 10 men there is no excuse for the players who were still on that pitch for performing like that. Naturally intensity will drop after winning the league and there isn’t really anything concerning for next season in that performance (at least from a 1st 11 perspective) but it’s still not acceptable. It’s a slap in the face of every fan who travelled to Easter Road at the end of the month in the same week season books are being renewed in the middle of a never ending cost of living crisis in Scotland.
Watching on my TV from thousands of miles away it’s not a big deal but I sure as eff feel sorry for every one of you who went to the game and committed your time, money and work night to be rewarded with that 2nd half performance.
CB of KDS:
Clearly Ange has said take it easy. The lack of physicality at the back and the space that we are giving opponents is farcical.
The ease at which we are conceding goals from poor goalkeeping to half hearted defending by Ralston and Bernabei and the centre halves is pretty astonishing even when you take into the account that the league is wrapped up.

Hibs’ extraordinary win over Celtic: penalties, red cards, goalie howler and stunning goal set up tantalising Hearts showdown
In an extraordinary 4-2 victory over Celtic, Kevin Nisbet bounced back from his recent penalty miss at Pittodrie by stepping up to score the equaliser in what could be the forward’s final match for Hibs at Easter Road.

However, it was his strike partner Elie Youan who provided the matchwinner to ensure that the capital battle for fourth place in the Premiership will go down to a final day shoot-out in Gorgie on Saturday, when Hibs take on Hearts at Tynecastle.
The match raged from end to end from start to finish, as did results and various permutations for the season as a whole. For everyone in the stands it was a case of keeping one eye on this match and one eye on the games. While others tussled for league survival, Hibs were one of four clubs still vying for a European spot.
By the end of the evening, Aberdeen had secured themselves third spot and guaranteed group stage competition on the continent next term. For the others, though, there is still plenty to play for. Hearts, despite having their early 1-0 lead at Ibrox overhauled, had looked safe in fourth, leaving Hibs and St Mirren hoping that Celtic can complete the domestic treble and free up one last UEFA qualifying vacancy for the fifth-placed finisher. But a late rally by Lee Johnson’s men, who moved up a gear or two to get themselves back on level-pegging and harnessed that momentum to run out 4-2 winners.
Elie Youan celebrates making it 3-2 against Celtic.

With Hearts unable to pick up any points at Ibrox, it allowed Hibs to move one point behind their city foes and set up a humdinger of a derby. It also ruled St Mirren out of the running, even before they turn up at Ibrox at the weekend.
The Easter Road side’s chances of heading across the city with fourth place still up for grabs looked forlorn earlier in the evening. They started brightly against a Celtic side that has now won only one of their last five league games. But, with Ange Postecogloy shuffling his squad, even giving back-up goalkeeper Scott Bain his first outing of the season, Hibs earned the three points they needed to keep their season alive.
There were openings for both sides in the first half but it was the visitors who made the breakthrough, after Lewis Stevenson conceded a penalty, which Reo Hatate was more than willing to convert. That was in the 41st minute but Hibs came back out for the second half in determined mood. In the 52nd minute Elie Youan equalised, before Hyeongyu Oh restored Celtic’s lead.
But then Daizen Maeda was sent off for his second yellow in the 67th minute. It was an undoubted advantage to the home side and there was a sigh of relief when Jake Doyle-Hayes’ red a few minutes later was downgraded to a yellow after VAR intervened.
Nisbet stepped to end his penalty blues in the 75th minute and Hibs kept their foot on the pedal and late goals for Youan – courtesy of a bad error from Bain, who had made a number of saves throughout – and then Paul Hanlon wrapped up the win and set up the dramatic conclusion to the season.
Ange Postecoglou says stuttering Celtic form is on him as he addresses Daizen Maeda red card and John Kennedy Hearts link
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has taken full responsibility for Celtic’s recent stuttering run but he insists there is method in his madness, as he considers the bigger picture.

The 4-2 loss to Hibs proved the fourth time in five games that the champions had failed to come out on top and for a team that had spent most of the season sweeping all-comers aside, it offers cause for comment but the Aussie is relatively unperturbed.
“We love to live in the moment and everyone is sort of making assessments on what is happening right now. That’s fine,” Postecoglou said. “Most of that is on me, to be honest. I am the one making five or six line-up changes every week. That’s hurting the side and there’s no doubt about that, but I’m doing it for a reason and that has affected our level of performance.
“Although, until the sending off, I thought we were in a good position. We were in a good position and looking to finish strong. The red card comes and it is sort of chaos from then on – cancelled reds, penalties, mistakes, it just seemed the game got really out of control in that last 20 or 25 minutes. That sort of hurt us in terms of the outcome.

“Aside from that, as I said, that’s my responsibility. I’ll take that. That’s the decisions I’ve made. In the last three weeks, they haven’t been to the benefit of the team. But in terms of any far-reaching assessments or conclusions, as I said earlier in the week, it’s for other people to make.”
The Parkhead boss would not criticise Daizen Maeda, whose two yellow cards left his team-mates outnumbered. “He’s a guy who just gives everything. I would never criticise him, the effort he puts in is just outstanding. He doesn’t go down as easy as others. That’s a credit to him.”
Postecoglou also addressed the speculation that assistant John Kennedy is being lined up as the new Hearts gaffer. “John [Kennedy] plays a vital role. I give him a lot of responsibility. He’s got a lot of experience at this football club, part of a lot of success. That isn’t by accident. It’s not surprising that people are looking at him. When the time is right he’ll make an outstanding manager.”

Elie Youan’s second was speculative but somehow caught out Scott Bain
Hibernian upset Scottish Premiership champions Celtic at Easter Road to set up a final-day Edinburgh derby decider to determine who will finish fourth in the division.
Lee Johnson’s side twice came from behind against the 10 men of Celtic, then went ahead after Scott Bain let Elie Youan’s speculative effort slip through his hands.
Reo Hatate’s penalty had Celtic in front before Youan volleyed in a leveller after the break. Oh Hyeun-gyu put Ange Postecoglou’s side back ahead, but Daizen Maeda’s red card sparked the contest into a dramatic conclusion.
Kevin Nisbet equalised from the spot before Bain’s fumble put Hibs ahead for the first time and the deputising goalkeeper was at fault again as Paul Hanlon nodded in a fourth, courtesy of a deflection from Alexandre Bernabei.
It means Hibs can clinch fourth, and a guaranteed Europa Conference League place, if they can win at Tynecastle on Saturday.
“We’ll do what we are doing and we’ll try and impose ourselves on a good Hearts side,” Johnson said. “It’s a tight pitch, the atmosphere will be absolutely electric and we have quality.
“I think the boys will feel confident going into the game and feel like they are in form but it is a one-off shoot-out and we want to make sure we come out on the right side of it.”

Postecoglou swapped six players from the 2-2 draw with St Mirren.
Bain came in for a first appearance of the season, while Bernabei, Yuki Kobayashi, Liel Abada, Sead Haksabanovic and Oh were also given a chance to show what they can do before the Scottish Cup final in 10 days time.
The answer was, for most, not a great deal.
The game started at frantic pace. Youan and Nisbet tested Bain and, initially, he stood up to them.
Celtic were getting into dangerous areas, with Oh forcing a good save from David Marshall before cracking the bar with a header. Eventually, it was Hatate who opened the scoring after Callum McGregor was wiped out by Lewis Stevenson.
Hibs, similar to their performance against Rangers, were creating but not finishing. That was until Youan volleyed in when Anthony Ralston’s header failed to clear the box.
Six minutes later, Oh had Celtic ahead again. He and Hanlon attacked Bernabei’s cross, with the ball falling kindly for the South Korean, who rifled low past Marshall. Back to script.
But then Maeda was sent off. There weren’t many complaints, as he was shown a second yellow for a similar challenge to his initial caution – catching a Hibs player as they attempted to clear the ball.
The man advantage seemed to have only lasted seconds, as Jake Doyle-Hayes was then shown a straight red for cynically wiping out Oh on the half-way line. VAR intervened, though, and Kevin Clancy overturned his own decision.
The momentum was back with Hibs and they were awarded the perfect chance to level. Ralston hauled down Lewis Miller as a corner came in and Nisbet powered in his penalty.
The next was far from the perfect chance. It was barely even a chance. Youan lined one up from 35 yards, arrowing it straight down the keeper’s throat – only for Bain to cough it up, letting the ball slip over his shoulder and in.
The goalkeeper didn’t look to clever for the fourth either. Miller hung the ball up to the back post and captain Hanlon powered a header downwards, squeezing it under the despairing Bain.

He actually could have had more. If Hibs sell him this summer, they could make a tidy profit.

Celtic do stop as Hibs turn clinical – analysis
It’s been a funny old season for Hibs. Lee Johnson has seemed on the brink a few times, and yet his Hibs’ side go into the final day of the season facing one of the biggest derbies since 2012.
They weren’t too bad against Rangers, but were punished for their mercy in front of goal. Again, they had plenty of chances but were handed the lead by a massive Bain blunder.
They’ve found consistent performances at the perfect time and they go into that derby as favourites.
It’s hard to know what to make of this Celtic side. Without Cameron Carter-Vickers, they seem particularly fragile at the back and Kobayashi is yet to settle in.
In the first half, they played pretty meretricious stuff but, on another night, could have been further ahead at the break.
It’s a difficult job to balance and rotate a squad that has so many elite players, but there seemed to be a lack of match fitness among the forward line.
What they said
Hibernian manager Lee Johnson: “It was a brilliant game. We had a right go. We went for the game while respecting Celtic’s quality and in the second half, we were the dominant side on and off the ball.”
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “This is on me, I’m making lots of changes and playing guys who haven’t played in a long time and in many ways, that’s unfair on them but that’s just my way of doing things.
“This squad has handled the Champions League, is in the final of a cup competition, won another cup competition and won the league… we will strengthen as we always do.”
