“Last year I had a glimpse of what Celtic was, this year was even better!” – Jota

Joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki: With a mostly first team today after playing various reserves recently and Johnstone suprisingly back, a far better performance on the field with Aberdeen taking the backlash after the 4-2 defeat a few days back. Celtic were mostly clinical, and there was little that Aberdeen or any other side could have done against a decent performance as was given today by Celtic. Kyogo & Oh scored wonderful doubles, but good to see Startfelt (in front of his attending family) score a good goal from a corner kick. Hart was little troubled in goal, and various players had their best match for a while. The Trophy Presentation show as stolen by an incredible TIFO display, so credit to all for the work put in, and humbling to see Martin O’Neill with the trophy at the start of the match. So much good to say about today, and Postecoglu has done wonders.

Party time at Celtic Park: Aberdeen dismantled, Postecoglou fires Rangers dig, guard of honour

Former players all kitted out in smart green jackets. Current Celtic stars being led into the ground by treble-winning managerial legend Martin O’Neill. And Aberdeen deciding to grace the occasion with a guard of honour, as if to say: see, it isn’t that hard to show some respect.

It was Premiership trophy day again at Parkhead, for the 11th time in a dozen years. The Aberdeen gesture was appreciated but might not have been altogether altruistic. They require Celtic to be on their mettle next weekend against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final. We’ll scratch your back, you scratch ours and all that. Aberdeen will profit in more ways than one from a Celtic treble because it means they would be guaranteed European group stage football until Christmas. In a way, it’s surprising chairman Dave Cormack hadn’t instructed his players to carry the Celtic team onto the park in Sedan chairs.

Celtic were certainly on their mettle here. They coasted to victory on the back of a Kyogo Furuhashi double in the space of five first-half minutes. Another double from Hyeongyu Oh who replaced the limping Kyogo – yes, there was some trouble in paradise – soon after the start of the second half helped bring up a 5-0 scoreline, with Carl Starfelt’s header sparking a late goals flurry. Three were scored in the last 12 minutes as Aberdeen clocked off early for their holidays and Celtic Park went into serious party mode.

Kyogo hurt himself chasing down Kelle Roos as the Aberdeen goalkeeper was making a clearance. Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou later sought to make light of the injury by recalling the striker scoring twice “on one leg” in last season’s League Cup final win over Hibs. Aberdeen as well as Celtic will be anxiously waiting for updates ahead of Saturday. Maybe even Inverness, too. Kyogo was still limping when he rejoined his teammates for the extended celebrations at the end.

The striker’s injury scare was one blot on the landscape as far as the home fans were concerned, as was the continued speculation concerning Postecoglou’s future. An extremely impressive tifo display as the Celtic players were applauded onto the pitch by Aberdeen involved all four stands and included depictions of Willie Maley and Jock Stein at either end of the ground. These heroes will always remain the last word in Celtic managerial legends. Although the logistical effort to put this superbly choreographed display in place might have pre-dated Postecoglou’s links with Spurs, it was easy to interpret it as a reminder to the current incumbent of the way major figures at the club are venerated.

All this might be yours one day, Ange. Don’t swap immortality for mediocrity, although that was an easier argument to make in the case of Brendan Rodgers’ sleekit flit to Leicester City mid-season. Celtic fans will hope – and it’s based on a reasonable reading of the situation – that the prospect of another Champions League campaign will trump any job offer from England, should it come.

Postecoglou didn’t crowd please to the extent that he screamed into the microphone when one was placed in front of him later that he was definitely on board for another season, but he was had the fans eating out of his hand in any case with a “Champions again” riff that finished with a dig at Michael Beale, his Rangers counterpart. “Champions again … because I’m a lucky man!” he exclaimed.

The pageantry was faultless. Celtic are getting fairly accomplished at this sort of thing now. The schedule was circulated on the eve of the match. Its main bullet points reflected arrangements that had been plotted with an almost military precision. “Arrive early for Trophy Day celebrations at Celtic Park,” the club website advised, the capital letters suggesting this is fast becoming a fixture in the Celtic calendar, which of course it is.
Kyogo Furuhashi came off injured but returned to the pitch to celebrate with the Celtic supporters.
Kyogo Furuhashi came off injured but returned to the pitch to celebrate with the Celtic supporters.

Balloon artists and face painters were on hand on Celtic Way from 10.15am, while at 10.40am O’Neill – “no stranger to silverware” – carried the Premiership trophy into Celtic Park, with the current team and Postecoglou filing in behind him. O’Neill later carried it onto the pitch. One could almost hear the Northern Irishman wryly observing that Stein and Maley get the mosaic treatment while he’s reduced to dogsbody.

Amid all this, a football match of sorts took place. Guard of honour aside, Aberdeen were not here to be compliant bystanders. They were dearly hoping to end this surreal campaign of theirs on a high note by defeating the champions in their own lair. There were some meaty challenges that jarred with the celebratory tone: Reo Hatate on Graeme Shinnie, Shinnie on Greg Taylor. The Aberdeen skipper was later booked for a professional foul.

Otherwise, Celtic prospered without too much of a fight put up by Aberdeen, adding three more goals in the second half to make it a post-war record tally of 114 for the season. Kyogo’s opener was perhaps the pick of this latest batch, when he gathered Taylor’s pass and executed a neat flick before sweeping into the net beyond Roos. The Aberdeen goalkeeper was culpable when Celtic made it 2-0 after he failed to hold a Callum McGregor shot. Kyogo was on hand to knock the ball in.

A header from the unmarked Starfelt after Matt O’Riley’s corner made it three with 12 minutes left and the impressive Oh weighed in with two striker’s finishes. The first, a header from Jota’s cross, attested to his strength. The second was also the product of a Jota assist of sorts. The Portuguese winger’s free-kick bashed back off the bar and Oh reacted first to force the ball over the line.

Seven goals since March while mainly operating as an auxiliary striker is not bad at all. Their rivals – or at least, rival – will note such signs of renewal even in an hour of glory. Oh-oh, indeed.

Celtic 5-0 Aberdeen: What did the manager say?

  • Published

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou told BBC Scotland: “It was a great day, we do trophy day well.

“The games before trophy day not so much but the boys were fantastic today, they played the football that was representative of the kind of team we’ve been this year.

“It’s a credit to the lads and just a great day, you can never get enough of that great atmosphere at the stadium and everyone enjoyed it.

“That’s the kind of performance we wanted, we’ve obviously been a bit disappointed with the way things have gone the last couple of weeks.

“I’ve probably been my responsibility more than anything else but the boys were just determined to play our football today and you saw it, they were working hard.

“The quality of our football was excellent, our finishing was good, credit to the lads.

On Kyogo’s injury, he added: “It doesn’t seem too serious, it’s a big game next week and he’ll give himself every chance to be available.”

Looking ahead to the Scottish Cup final, he said: “Far be it for me to burst anyone’s bubble because I want the boys to enjoy today and enjoy the glow of being champions and they deserve every minute of it but, come Monday, we’ll be back on the job and making sure we’re preparing well.

“Cup finals are always a special occasion, we need to perform well, and it would cap off a special season for us.”

Celtic turned on the style in their final league game but the title party was tinged with concern for the fitness of Kyogo Furuhashi and Alistair Johnston after the pair were injured in a 5-0 win over Aberdeen.

Furuhashi went off after scoring twice in five first-half minutes to consolidate his place at the top of the Premiership goalscoring charts. The Japan international came off worse in a 50-50 with the Aberdeen goalkeeper, Kelle Roos, and limped off five minutes into the second half, despite initially trying to play on.

Johnston was making his comeback from the heavy leg knock he suffered during Celtic’s Scottish Cup semi-final win over Rangers and he went down holding his leg before making way in the 64th minute.

Carl Starfelt grabbed his first goal at Parkhead and substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scoreed twice before the team collected the Premiership trophy.

Ange Postecoglou’s champions emerged to a guard of honour from Aberdeen, who clinched third place and a European spot in midweek and will be guaranteed group-stage football if Celtic win the cup. Liel Abada made a lively start, before making way for James Forrest at half-time, and Celtic looked to have rediscovered the intensity missing since they won the title at Tynecastle.

Furuhashi missed two chances and Starfelt’s header was well saved by Roos before Greg Taylor’s pass set the forward up to finish into the top corner in the 27th minute. The PFA Scotland Player of the Year scored his 27th Premiership goal of the season – three ahead of the Hearts captain, Lawrence Shankland, and Motherwell’s striker Kevin van Veen, who has one game left. Roos spilled Callum McGregor’s curling effort and Furuhashi reacted quickest to knock the rebound home.

Furuhashi was not far over from a tight angle before his chances of a hat-trick were ended by injury. But Celtic continued to dominate. Matt O’Riley hit the post, Jota was just wide with an acrobatic flick and Reo Hatate came close before Starfelt headed home O’Riley’s corner in the 78th minute.

Oh headed home four minutes later from Jota’s cross before doubling his tally in the last minute after the Portuguese winger had struck the bar with a free-kick.

Fashion Sakala grabbed a double as Rangers signed off on their season with 3-0 win over St Mirren in Paisley. Both teams had little to play for but Sakala was determined to leave a lasting impression on the campaign, scoring after a solo run after 26 minutes before adding a second just after the break with a similar run and finish.

Antonio Colak came off the bench to score a third in the 77th minute as Rangers – consigned to finish runners-up – enjoyed a comfortable finale to their trophyless season.

Ten-man Hearts held on for a 1-1 draw in a tense final-day Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle to stop Hibernian leapfrogging them into fourth place.

The Jambos knew a point would be enough to keep their fifth-place city rivals beneath them and secure automatic European qualification next term, and they got off to the perfect start when Yutaro Oda fired them into a ninth-minute lead. But a red card for Alex Cochrane – his third of the season – on the half hour and an equaliser from Kevin Nisbet immediately afterwards meant Hearts had to dig deep to get the point they needed.

Done final on one leg before’: Kyogo Furuhashi update from Celtic boss after Japanese forward suffers injury

Ange Postecoglou has issued a reminder that Kyogo Furuhashi can be effective even on one leg in cup finals after Scotland’s outstanding player of the year limped out of Celtic’s trophy day thrashing of Aberdeen.

A leg injury sustained in a challenge with Aberdeen goalkeeper Kelle Roos has put his participation in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in some doubt. Postecoglou struck an upbeat note afterwards as he reflected on the striker’s match winning contribution in the League Cup final against Hibs last season. Kyogo had been a doubt going into the match but scored twice in the 2-1 win despite being far from fit.

Kyogo scored another double in the 5-0 win over Aberdeen to make it 33 for the season as Celtic finished their league campaign in style. The striker was still limping when he returned to the pitch to celebrate with his teammates after the final whistle. He now faces a race against time to recover before Celtic bid to secure the treble against Inverness.

Postecoglou sounded confident that he will play a part at Hampden. “It’s too early to tell but I don’t think it’s anything serious,” he said. “Speaking to the medical guys we’ll see how it settles down. At this stage, with it being a cup final…he has done a cup final on one leg before so unless both his legs are out I reckon there’s a chance.”

Another five goals meant Postecoglou’s side broke the club’s post-war scoring record in a league season with 114 goals. The previous best was the 111 total reached by the Lisbon Lions in 1966-67. “It’s kind of what my football is about,” said the manager. “I love my teams to play. I have said before, I set my teams up to win and hopefully entertain the fans. The players have done that this year. They have been relentless. Just the sheer volume of goals and even on a day like this, not relaxing when it’s 3-0 or even 4-0. They want to make every moment in the game count.”

There was one elephant in the room on another glory day for Celtic – the continued speculation linking Postecoglou with a move to Tottenham Hotspur. He was asked whether the pre and post-match scenes were a timely reminder of what he had at Celtic. “I feel it every day,” he said. “I know it is a special football club and I’ve had wonderful support from day one. I am enjoying being part of this football club but I also take the responsibility seriously.”

Chris Sutton weighs in on Ange Postecoglou to Spurs as ex-Celtic striker offers ‘smaller club’ verdict

Chris Sutton admits Ange Postecoglou could be tempted by a move to the Premier League but feels a move to Tottenham Hotspur would be a “downgrade” on Celtic.

Postecoglou is the new bookies favourite to become the next Spurs manager after reports emerged on Thursday that he is being “strongly considered” for the post after the previous frontrunner, Feyenoord boss Arne Slot, pulled out of the race.

The former Australia head coach has steered Celtic to a second consecutive Scottish title – securing Champions League group-stage football again next season – and will clinch a historic treble if his side defeat Inverness in the Scottish Cup final next weekend having already lifted the League Cup.

Asked about the Spurs speculation by Sky Sports, the Celtic boss replied. “It doesn’t [come onto my radar]. I think anyone who knows me, I’ve been asked about these things plenty of times, know that what’s important for me is the here and now. I’ve never planned anything in my football career.”

Sutton reckons, however, that Postecoglou will have ambitions of managing in the English top flight – even though Spurs are a “smaller club” than the Scottish champions in the eyes of the former Celtic striker turned pundit.

Posting on Twitter, Sutton stated: “I want Ange Postecoglou to stay at Celtic and have a crack at the CL next season and Tottenham Hotspur is clearly a downgrade/smaller club than Celtic but nobody can deny the fact that Ange will want a crack at the Premier League down south at some stage…”

‘Champions again’ – Postecoglou speech as Celtic lift Premiership trophy

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou says Kyogo Furuhashi’s injury “doesn’t seem too serious” after the striker limped off on the back of netting a double in Celtic’s Scottish Premiership rout of Aberdeen.

The Japanese struck twice in the first half before being caught by Aberdeen goalkeeper Kelle Roos with the Scottish Cup final against Inverness Caledonian Thistle looming next Saturday.

A powerful Carl Starfelt header made it three before an Oh Hyeon-gyu double put the finishing touches on a relentless trophy-day display for the hosts.

“It’s a big game next week and he’ll give himself every chance to be available,” Postecoglou added.

“It was a great day, we do trophy day well.

“The games before trophy day not so much but the boys were fantastic today, they played the football that was representative of the kind of team we’ve been this year.”

Celtic news, views, and analysis
All your Aberdeen news in one place

Celtic came close to opening the scoring within 30 seconds as Kyogo latched onto the end of Alistair Johnston’s threaded pass but his shot back across goal trickled wide of the far post.

That early chance, however, set the tone for a dominant display from the hosts with Kyogo taking a starring role in the opening 45.

Attack after attack followed for Postecoglou’s side but the final pass often failed to materialise into a goalscoring opportunity.

Greg Taylor’s pass then found Kyogo on the edge of the area who let it run across his body before checking back with a smart flick, leaving two trailing Aberdeen defenders in his wake. A smart, composed finish was then fired past Kelle Roos.

The league’s current top goalscorer’s quick-fire double was completed when Roos inexplicably palmed a fairly tame Callum McGregor strike into the path of the awaiting Kyogo, who was rewarded for not standing still as he lifted his strike over the dejected keeper.

After the interval Kyogo almost pounced on another error as Jack MacKenzie’s back pass required Roos to rush out and slide in to clear the ball. In the process, the onrushing Celtic forward took a sore one and hobbled off.

A whipped Celtic corner was powered in by Starfelt off the underside of the bar after Jota’s striker was ruled out for offside.

Oh followed Kyogo’s first-half display as he contributed with a late second-half double in the final 10 minutes.

He nodded in on the end of Jota’s dinked delivery into the six-yard box and he then slammed home after Jota’s free-kick cracked off the bar, with Roos left stranded having dived for the initial set piece.

Celtic back on form before cup final – analysis

They hadn’t won in their past three games, but with the title already wrapped up alarm bells were hardly ringing for Celtic.

This sort of performance, against on of the league’s form sides prior to today, is the ideal jolt to the system ahead of their treble-deciding Scottish Cup final.

All of the usual stats fall in their favour, but Oh stepping in to replace Kyogo and scoring a double may be crucial for the final as former’s limp was still evident in the post-match celebrations.

For Barry Robson’s side it was a chastening afternoon after a revitalisation in their form and securing third-place.

No shots, less than 25% possession, and only 35 entries into the final third.

It doesn’t impact their final placing, but they clearly need to bring it up a notch ahead of their European ventures.
What they said

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “”That’s the kind of performance we wanted, we’ve obviously been a bit disappointed with the way things have gone the last couple of weeks.

“I’ve probably been my responsibility more than anything else but the boys were just determined to play our football today and you saw it, they were working hard.

“The quality of our football was excellent, our finishing was good, credit to the lads.

Aberdeen manager Barry Robson: “I am angry, it looks like it was a game too far for us. I think we’ve really squeezed what we could out of the group and after all the emotions of Wednesday night we got more tired and tired as the game went on.

“But it’s still a reminder to the players that I’ll not accept that. I’m not accepting that. For as good as they’ve been, and the praise they’ve had, next season we need to be better than that.

“As frustrated as I am right now, the way I am as a person, I’ve still got to remember how good they’ve been. I think the fans will remember that as well.”
