Summary
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “First game there’s always a wee bit of nerves, so it’s good win for us. We didn’t start the game well and County made it really difficult for us.
“Once we found our space and combinations we scored a couple of really good goals and played some fantastic football. The two goals we gave away are soft.”
Ross County manager Malky Mackay: “I thought we started well. We get those chances in the first 15 minutes and should have scored. If it’s an international team, Celtic are 2-0 down.
“Our shape and system were good, our discipline were good, and we give away a stupid penalty. Then we don’t defend a cross in the last minute of the first half and next minute we are 3-0 down at half-time.”
Chris Sutton: Tough to know what to make of that from Celtic. Good result but the performance wasn’t as slick as maybe expected. Early days and certain players short on fitness clearly. Imo Celtic are always a better team with Hatate in though… albeit good competition for places in midfield
Joebloggscity: Was Starfelt’s last touch for Celtic a deflection off him for a conceded goal? He was unfortunate and not at fault and really was doing right thing.
celticbynumbers @Alan_Morrison67 · 3h “Disjointed” and “ragged” are too extreme as descriptors of today’s performance I wonder if a more radical reboot than Rodgers’ expected is on t’ cards? Jota, Mooy and now Starfelt – none of those departures were, i believe, expected Lots of questions after today re personnel
ETIMS: FT #Celtic 4 RC 2 No long in from game. Haven’t seen any footage. That was strange. Outplayed first 20 mins by RC. We seemed to still be on holiday! There was some good fitba played but overall disjointed. Seemed to be stuck between Ange & BR styles. Kinda expected(ish)…Mid not at its best & yet Turnbull scored 2. Movement o ball seemed too tippy/tappy. Reo vital to our quick play the past 18 months. Big chg to Kyogo’s game, which I liked. He was far more involved leaving massive gaps. Once team up to speed I think we’ll exploit this as a lot… Rocky was excellent technically. Great to see but can he defend? We’ll find out in the next few weeks. Delighted for Turnbull. AJ back will make big difference. Would love to see a version of him at LB. Great having CCV back. Team needs time to adjust to minor system tweaks… Finally, interesting point from BR media conf on Thurs. He needed time to assess squad. In his words he’s done that now and knows the first team positions he wants new signings for this month. Nicholson has been excellent so far. Here’s hoping he continues to deliver this month.
@agentscotland: Four goals scored but a very lethargic performance from Celtic, they dominated the ball for most of the game but there wasn’t the usual zip and zest, their opening two home games last season were very similar in terms of intensity so wouldn’t read too much into it too soon tho’.
Rodgers will be the making or breaking of Reo Hatate, said before he’s the most positive Celtic midfielder I’ve seen in 25 years & got potentiel to go to the very top, but top clubs won’t touch him until he takes better care of the ball, BR won’t allow him the freedom AP did IMO.
@dd: Ways to go with our play but personnel changes to come still.A win. Kyogo’s touches. Turnbull scoring. Yang looks fun. Brendan’s two middle fingers in the mouth whistle. Two avoidable goals conceded. Hatate needs to start. It’s pishing it down here.

Brendan Rodgers enjoyed a winning return as manager and David Turnbull seized his fresh start with two goals as Celtic opened the season with a home win over Ross County. Rodgers preferred Turnbull to Reo Hatate in his first competitive match and the midfielder repaid his faith with two first-half efforts either side of Kyogo Furuhashi’s goal.
He revelled in playing in the advanced role in the three-man midfield ahead of Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley.

Rodgers also made a big decision in central defence as Maik Nawrocki made his debut ahead of Carl Starfelt, who came off the bench later on, probably for his last appearance.
Jordan White had scored for the visitors by that stage and O’Riley restored Celtic’s three-goal cushion before James Brown’s deflected effort provided further consolation for County.
Rodgers explained the departure of his centre-half. “I wanted to put Carl Starfelt on because it might be his last game here. He has been a great servant to the club.
“There is interest in him and he would like to take up that possibility. We will resolve that as quick as we can.”
The centre-half’s partner, Jacynta Galabadaarachchi, left Celtic for Sporting Lisbon this summer and Starfelt looks set to follow her out of Glasgow after two years at the club.
Rodgers said of Turnbull, the man of the match: “I spoke to him in pre-season and told him it would be a shame if you don’t achieve what you can do at a club like this, because you have the talent, but you have to be a working talent, and you have to be able to run and be aggressive in your game. If you can do that, then your qualities will come through.

The Ross County manager, Malky Mackay, bemoaned his team’s profligacy. “Our shape and system were good, our discipline were good, and we give away a stupid penalty,” he said. “Then we don’t defend a cross in the last minute of the first half and the next minute we are 3-0 down at half-time.
“I know at 3-0 here that can go on to become six or seven. My challenge for them at half-time was to be brave and go and score a goal and press high.
“Sometimes we were able to do it and sometimes we didn’t because we have some new players who aren’t quite there with the explanations I give them but I was really happy with how brave they were in the second half.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers oversaw a 4-2 win in his first competitive game back at the club.
Following the 4-2 win in their opening day Premiership encounter with Ross County, the Irishman explained that Starfelt – who started on the bench – had been introduced for Maik Nawrocki in the 67th minute effectively to provide him a farewell. Celta Vigo are the club understood to be in talks to sign the Swede, who wants to be closer to his partner Jacynta Galabadaarachchi after she moved to Lisbon-based outfit Sporting CP earlier this summer.
“I wanted to put Carl Starfelt on, it might be his last appearance here,” he said of substituting in the 28-year-old signed for £4million from Rubin Kazan in the summer of 2021. “There has been interest for him and he wants to take up that possibility. We will resolve that as quick as we can. I thought it would be nive for him to get maybe a final appearance at Celtic Park. The club [and the buying club] are communication. I’m sure that will go through early part of next week, if not before.
“He clearly probably felt it was the time to move on. I have to say, he has been really respectful and has loved his time here. There are obviously certain conditions he has thought about in going to one of the top leagues, and economically it is hard [for Celtic to compete on that side. Obviously his partner is no longer here anymore and has moved on. So there are a number of reasons why he would like to move on. I have to say he is a total professional, first class, and if it didn’t go through, I know I can rely on him. But I think it probably will.”
Rodgers maintained Starfelt’s departure will put him into the transfer market for another centre-back.”We would need to get another centre half,” he said. “The whole idea was to have four that could be competitive, and if Carl was to go, we would bring in another one.”

Kyogo Furuhashi – the Premiership’s top scorer last season – opened his account for the new campaign to put Celtic 2-0 up
David Turnbull emerged from the shadows to inspire champions Celtic as Brendan Rodgers’ second tenure began with a season-opening Scottish Premiership victory over Ross County.
Attacking midfielder Turnbull – a peripheral figure last season under Ange Postecoglou – netted a double and helped tee up Kyogo Furuhashi as Celtic raced 3-0 ahead by half-time.
Jordan White looped in a header to reduce the deficit, but Matt O’Riley smashed Celtic’s fourth to ensure a winning start for Rodgers before James Brown replied for County with the last kick.
There was no sign of hostility at Celtic Park towards manager Rodgers, whose return in June met resistance from some supporters because of his abrupt departure to Leicester City four years ago.
Celtic news, analysis & fan views
Ross County content all in one place
The stadium was a riot of noise and colour as the title flag was hoisted by long-serving winger James Forrest pre-match amid an ebullient atmosphere for the season opener.
Maik Nawrocki, the Polish centre-back signed from Legia Warsaw this summer, made his Celtic debut in place of Carl Starfelt, who Rodgers confirmed may be on his way out of the club.
“He’s a player we’d to keep but if he doesn’t want to be here, we have to close the deal,” said Rodgers. “That’s something that’ll develop next week. If you lose someone of his quality, you need to replace that.”
Celtic’s defence was quickly under pressure as County – who survived relegation with a miraculous comeback in last season’s play-off final – came tearing at them.
Malky Mackay’s men harried Celtic and were the better side early on. Yet they still found themselves effectively dead and buried by half-time.
Simon Murray twice went close for the visitors and they were screaming for a penalty when Joe Hart tangled with the striker after struggling to deal with an awkward Anthony Ralston backpass.
Having weathered the storm, Celtic began to click through the gears and Turnbull was the driving force.
The 24-year-old slotted the opener from the penalty spot, after Greg Taylor was tripped by Josh Sims, and was key to the second goal with a deft header that sent Liel Abada bursting clear down the right to cross for Kyogo to finish first time.
Turnbull might have had a first-half hat-trick and Ross Laidlaw’s double save kept him out before he added his second with a half-volley from Matt O’Riley’s cross to the back post.
County weren’t going quietly, though, and White met Yan Dhanda’s corner to send a dipping header just inside the post.
Celtic responded with verve and a delicious flick from Kyogo set up O’Riley to lash in the fourth.
There was a debut for Yang Hyun-jun – another of Celtic’s five new signings – off the bench and fellow substitute Forrest was denied a goal in his testimonial week by a smart Laidlaw save.
But County had the final say as Brown netted a strike that flew past Hart via a deflection off Starfelt, which could well be the defender’s last act as a Celtic player.
Player of the match – David Turnbull

Kyogo ran him close, but the Scotland midfielder put in terrific performance and looks re-energised under Rodgers
Celtic too slick for battling County – analysis
Turnbull was preferred in midfield to Reo Hatate, a talisman of Celtic’s treble success last season, and justified Rodgers’ faith with a performance that suggests he is ready to revive his stagnated Celtic career.
Rodgers’ Celtic look an evolution rather then revolution of the relentless Postecoglou style. They pressed and attacked aggressively, while playing with more rotation in midfield.
Kyogo picked up where he left off last season and his danger when dropping deep was shown by Celtic’s fourth. After the early stutters and the late concession, Rodgers will hope for more defensive cohesion in the coming weeks.
There was much to admire about County’s early play. Rather than sit deep and await their fate, they started with Murray and White up front and pressed Celtic high.
Murray could count himself unfortunate to see a strike deflected wide, and another blocked by Carter-Vickers, but these are the type of opportunities that have to be put away against the champions.
Still, County’s perseverance was rewarded with goals for White and Brown and there were signs of a promising campaign ahead for Mackay’s men after last season’s survival sweat.
