Summary
Brendan Rodgers: BR “Attitude of players is top class. The subs came in and settled the game well. Lots to work on. It’s the beauty of the squad is they want to learn & want to get better. They will get better. While improving it’s important to win”
“What we’ve tried to do is add variety to Kyogo’s game and you can see in the last game he’s very good in going behind. We’ve tried to include him more in the build-up phase which opens spaces, especially when teams are man-marking.” Brendan Rodgers
“His finish was sublime. He’s clever and cute in the game, he’s an elite player in terms of his movements and his runs and he played the offside really well and that’s what you tell your strikers, not to rush back.” Brendan Rodgers on Kyogo
“It’s early days under Brendan and under a new style, and we’re still adapting, but I still think we played some really good stuff at times, and consistency of good sustained performance will come with time.” Matt O’Riley
spidey100 of KDS:
Not a brilliant performance but goal aside Aberdeen didn’t really look like scoring.
Don’t think we learnt much either – basically we’re not as good as we were last year. Defensively, Hart’s on a clear decline, we need an upgrade at LB, AJ can’t come back quick enough. Goal aside Nawrocki looked decent, CCV looks a bit off it and Welsh did well when he came on.
Midfield looks sluggish – CalMac a bit off it and we miss Hatate. MOR’s been decent. MOR and Hatate need to tighten up their passing.
Kyogo remains our best player and the wingers are too similar to work as a pair – both lack a bit of trickery and creativity. Having one is fine – having two makes us too stodgy and means we don’t have an out ball to run with it.
Holm and Yang looked good in their cameos – both should grow into this team and I’d be tempted to start Yang instead of Maeda in the next few games. Holm to start next week if Hatate isn’t fit.
Kwon missing from the bench suggests he’s one who needs a lot more time to adapt and bed in – not expecting to see much of him for a while. Iwata seems to have dropped down the merit order – think he’s looking like a 3rd choice RB/5th choice CB/6th CM.
Just confirms we need a GK, LB, CB (the Swedish guy looks like a done deal), CM and LW.
Radagast of KDS:
Hart – good
Ralston- average
Ccv – poor for the goal
Nawrocki- good
Taylor – terrible
Mcgregor- not got going yet this season
O’Riley – our best player
Turnbull – not great
Kyogo – good
Abada – had loads of the ball , could have played better final balls
Maeda- could have had a couple of goals himself
Hatate- some flashes of what he can do
Welsh – surprisingly good
Yang – great assist
Holm – decent
Forrest – OK
Chris Sutton: Chris Sutton @chris_sutton73 · 3h Great advert for the Scottish game that Aberdeen were brave and got after Celtic but Celtic devastating in the final third. Yang great feet for the O Riley goal. Celtic need a couple of bodies in quickly imo though… Fair play to Anthony Ralston I love his commitment!
Twitter:
FT: Aberdeen 1-3 Celtic Really entertaining game, end to end & played a ferocious pace, both teams shot themselves in the foot defensively but Celtic’s subs made a huge difference, both clubs have a bit of work to do before they’ll be satisified with their squads for the season.
E-Tims @ETimsNet · 3h FT Aberdeen 1 #Celtic 3 A hard fought victory. Well done Celtic What really impressed is a defence that hasn’t played before and contains squad players at a v tough venue. Lots of credit their way. I don;t like singling out / picking on players but…Taylor needs replaced. An AJ clone (when fit!) at left back is all I ask for! Mid clearly better when Reo came on but alas quick injury. Odin and Yang then thrown in at the deep end. Yang brilliant for goal that sealed game. Odin clearly has talent. MOR pick of the bunch in mid. Thought he’d push on under BR and after 2 games there for all to see.
Yang and Holm both contributed well when they came on and Nawrocki grew into the game.
AgentScotland: By the time Turnbull takes a touch, steadies himself, sees a pass and then plays it, Hatate is already two moves ahead, there is no semblance of a comparison between these two. That isn’t a knock on Turnbull, he’s a good player it just is what it is.
Highland__Paddy @Highland__paddy · 3h 3 points taken at a difficult away ground so early in the season will do me just fine. We look a threat going forward, but careless when in possession in front of our own goal. Aberdeen had 2 shots on goal the whole game , Hart dealt well with the cross balls. How the referee kept his cards in his pocket for the Aberdeen players , Shinnie in particular, considering the bookings Celtic picked up, was bizarre. An erratic performance to say the least by Clancy. The mistakes we are making in giving away possession and our fragility at defending is giving me the fear , we really need to tighten up. That said, we look a threat any time we go up the park. An interesting second half ahead, our substitutes could prove crucial.
Liam Kelly @cfcliamk96 · 3h Will take 3 points at Pittodrie, but that was way off it.Couldn’t throw the ball to our own players half the time, let alone keep possession in play&gave away several chances Need more quality if we want to compete in Europe.Lost big players rather than building on the team we had
@Alan_Morrison67 · 4h Very entertaining which is another way of saying inadequate Celtic control Keep losing possession in central positions = trouble against any opponents McGregor worst culprit unfortunately
@CelticFansTV: “Nawrocki is a machine”
St Anthony: How Aberdeen got through that game without any yellow cards is beyond me. The refereeing in this country is truly atrocious.
@CPHamill: Yang v Aberdeen 20 minutes played 8 touches 4 passes completed 2 chances created 1 assist Efficiency personified from Celtic’s new signing!
Lint: Handball penalty shout Aberdeen v Celtic. Not given!!!

Aberdeen v Celtic takes Pittodrie plot twist under noon sun but end of story remains the same

There were some hairy moments for Celtic up at Pittodrie, but ultimately the champions left with what they came for in three precious Premiership three points.

Up against a resurgent Aberdeen, Brendan Rodgers’ men prevailed 3-1 in an engrossing contest under the high noon sun. The Dons applied heat, battling back from a goal down and staying right in the contest until Celtic’s late third goal settled matters. The victory did not come without cost. Key defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, only just back from knee surgery, was replaced at the break. Midfielder Reo Hatate, who came on at half time, only lasted 25 minutes after picking up an injury. There were periods of insecurity at the back, but as champions tend to do, Celtic found a way.
Liel Abada got them up and running on 11 minutes, netting from close range after Daizen Maeda had headed a Matt O’Riley free-kick across goal. Assistant referee Calum Spence flagged for offisde, but VAR overturned the ruling as Dante Polvara was level with Israeli. The opener would have been frustrating for Aberdeen, who had started brightly.
The Dons pressed the life out of Celtic’s defence early on. This is the way Barry Robson sets out his teams and they made life uncomfortable for Celtic. Their equaliser on 25 minutes was far from a surprise, Miovski tapping home after Duk had too easily ghosted past a wooden Carter-Vickers and squared the ball. Maik Nawrocki, Celtic’s other centre-half, was far too slow in recognising the danger to cover. Early days, of course, for this new-look partnership.
Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi celebrates at full time following the victory over Aberdeen.
Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi celebrates at full time following the victory over Aberdeen.
Celtic’s most impressive performer was the lively Maeda. Nicky Devlin was having a hard time dealing with him but that did not excuse his awful judgement when heading a high ball back towards his own goal, not realising that Kyogo Furuhashi was behind him. Just six minutes after levelling, Aberdeen were behind again, the Japanese pouncing on the gift and firing past Kelle Roos, who perhaps will regret his weak-wristed attempt to save it.
Both teams neglected the art of defence in the first half, which made for an entertaining occasion. Abada could have added a third after more good work from Maeda but his finish was tame, and Celtic went in at the break with only a one-goal advantage.
The second half was tenser and close. Leighton Clarkson fired narrowly wide from the left flank for Aberdeen and Maeda nearly added a third, with Devlin partially atoning for his error with a spectacular clearance off his own line. The Dons kept at it but never truly threatened.
Spence’s correct 80th-minute flagging of substitute Ester Sokler saved Hart’s blushes, the goalkeeper charging out of his box and rashly barging down the Slovenian. It was a poor bit of decision-making that would have resulted in a red card for the goalkeeper. Four minutes later, Celtic put the game out of reach, however, with O’Riley slotting home an accurate low cross from Yang Hyun-jun.
Aberdeen are on a 15-game winless streak at home to Celtic. You have to go back to February 2016 for their last success at Pittodrie against them. Thirteen of those matches have been Celtic triumphs. There were positives for the Dons – Shayden Morris, a peripheral figure last season, played very well at right wing-back, and the Duk-Miovski partnership up front worked well – and this was a massive stylistic improvement on the last time they hosted Celtic last December back in Jim Goodwin’s time, when they played with ten men behind the ball and lost 1-0 without landing a blow. It shows the strides they have made under Robson.
Yet, despite that, the all-too familiar storyline remains Aberdeen v Celtic, with the visitors back on top of the league after the second week of the season.

Kyogo Furuhashi scores for Celtic against Aberdeen
Kyogo Furuhashi made no mistake after being presented with the chance to put Celtic 2-1 up
Champions Celtic held off a spirited Aberdeen to make it two wins out of two in the Scottish Premiership.
Liel Abada scored the visitors’ opener after VAR overturned an offside decision but Bojan Miovski levelled from close range.
Kyogo Furuhashi pounced on a dreadful defensive lapse by Nicky Devlin to fire Celtic back in front and Matt O’Riley sealed victory late on.
Aberdeen threatened through Leighton Clarkson’s shot wide at 2-1 and remain on one point after two games.

Celtic had come close through Kyogo’s chip wide by the time Abada converted Daizen Maeda’s header off O’Riley’s free-kick. Replays showed Abada had been played onside by Dante Polvara.
Graeme Shinnie headed over and Ryan Duncan’s shot suffered the same fate as the Dons pressed, but Luis ‘Duk’ Lopes’ pace outstripped Cameron Carter-Vickers as he latched on to Duncan’s pass to set up Miovski for a tap in.
Parity was short lived, though, as Devlin headed back towards Aberdeen’s goal, where Kyogo was all on his own to strike. Goalkeeper Kelle Roos then denied Abada and O’Riley from a free-kick to keep the home side in the game, just.
And it almost paid dividends as Miovski burrowed and harried defenders to set up Polvara, whose shot was deflected wide.
Kyogo fired over from substitute Reo Hatate’s cross after the break and Devlin atoned for his earlier error with a last-ditch clearance to prevent a Maeda goal.
And, after Clarkson’s chance and Maeda being denied by Roos when clean through, sub Yang Hyun-jun set up O’Riley in the six-yard box for the clincher.

Celtic negotiate tricky first away day – analysis
In a game of counter attacks, Aberdeen gave as good as they got with Miovski and Duk troubling the Celtic defence and getting the right kind of support from midfield.
One moment that got supporters off their feet was Ester Sokler being taken out by goalkeeper Joe Hart after latching on to a long ball, but the Aberdeen substitute was offside.
The Dons were vulnerable to the break themselves, though, and Celtic could have made more of their possession in wide areas.
After some uncomfortable first-half moments, Celtic sent on Hatate and Stephen Welsh in place of David Turnbull and Carter-Vickers for the second period and had more control of the play.
However, Hatate soon limped off, giving summer signing Odin Thiago Holm a run out for the final 20 minutes, with Yang making an impact as Abada’s replacement.
What the managers said
Aberdeen manager Barry Robson: “What a terrific game of football. I think you saw how brave we were, we really went after them. I didn’t think it was a 3-1 result, I thought we were hard done by. Celtic really found it hard.
“We had really good chances. We should really be scoring a couple more goals. I thought Aberdeen were outstanding.”
Kyogo an elite striker, says Celtic boss Rodgers
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “It was a very good win for us. Obviously, a difficult game. We showed a good mentality in the game. Really good goals and a better second half for us.
“Kyogo [Furuhashi] is an elite striker – his movement, everything about him. He’s so alert, really clever. He plays that offside position well and if you make a mistake, he can punish you.
