Summary

Pre-Match: Brendan Rodgers makes Celtic squad ‘not as strong’ admission and explains what is being done to address it. An increasingly exasperated refrain from the Celtic support in the wake of the League Cup exit at Kilmarnock last weekend is that the club’s squad is notably weaker than the one that claimed a domestic treble last season.
“The players have been outstanding this week in training and we will look to take that into the game.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “There was enough effort from the players and the keeper makes a couple of good saves.

“But overall we didn’t play at the tempo we would want to and the speed of the game and that little bit of craft you need to against a team that’s low.”

St Johnstone manager Steven MacLean: “We were excellent. Our shape was fantastic, the players’ work rate, their work ethic, their energy levels. It was everything we asked for.

“It’s been a tough start to the season with the injuries and performances and the results – but it is just a start though. It’s a good point here, but it’s important that we kick on.”

ElSalto of KDS: We now have a manager who has changed our whole style of play, from a style of play that was, for the most part, exciting and paid dividends, to a turgid slow game of sideways possession along our back and midfield lines. We are now playing in a “system” that has effectively isolated our once dynamic Captain, and reduced him to anonymity. A “system” that now sees our previously deadly 34 goal striker reduced to falling deeper and deeper to get the ball, but even when crosses went in, he was slow, behind the play and frankly looked disinterested. We have a manger who thinks it’s a good idea to start with Turnbull when he’s clearly not up to the physical challenges from SPFL hoofball merchants. We are too small, not physical enough, have zero creativity without Hatate. We have players on that pitch who are simply never going to cut it with Celtic, and some experienced players who have downed tools. If Matt O’Riley had anything about him at all, he’s scoring two in that first half, instead we have a keeper saving when he really should have had no chance. I could name almost every other player on the pitch as being scared, hiding, or just being plain ineffective, but I’d excuse Yang (wtf is Rodgers doing taking him off?), Johnston, and Hart for making two important saves near the end.
Depressing stuff, the longer we played the less likely we looked to score, and now two games without a goal against fodder who just avoided relegation last season.
Trying not to think of the worst case scenario next week, but it’s hard not to. Are there any of those players out there today who will be prepared to go to Ibrox next week and battle for everything? On today’s evidence I’d say unlikely. If we go behind early next weekend we could be on the end of a sore one.
Something is very wrong at Celtic Park and we need to address it NOW.

GHJ of KDS:

Lack of urgency throughout was a disgrace.‬ the midfield is very poor without hatate. McGregor is a yard slow and needs to wrap Scotland pronto.

The CBs are taking too long to pass and allows the opposition to sit deep, scales being particularly guilty today. The FBs aren’t (can’t) overlap and everything is far too narrow.

Before the end of the week we need to get a CM that his pace, a LB that can overlap, a CB on loan and I’m wanting a Gk. this is assuming palma has signed.

Positive for me was Yang. Looked direct and has a trick. MOR for 60 mins, but lost the thread a wee bit at the end.

Bringing on bernebei, Forrest and a lesser degree Ralston (tactical due to AJ fitness) to try and win a game is pretty depressing since the 3 of them were nowhere near the first team last season and shows the comparative weakness of our squad right now.

BT of KDS:

We have lost our cutting edge and are currently relying on players that are so far below the required standard

Those that have been better before are not functioning in this system (yet?)

Seeing us see out the game with
Forrest – Haksa – Berna and Ralston was as depressing a site as I’ve seen

It would be kind to say they co tributes nothing but they actually made things worse – considerably worse

First half was fine I felt – felt a goal or two would come – Yang looked very decent – MOR was showing some lovely touches but soft as shoe finishing

Second half was painful – a tough watch – what was evident is we seemed to be trying to pass from defence for someone to then pass wider for winger or advancing defender – the old ‘ball round the corner’ but we have no quality once we got round the corner

Talking of corners – what’s the plan ? Float it high for the keeper to catch ?

Some well deserved anger after a performance like that – injuries contribute but the over all lack of shape and purpose is concerning

Finger out please Celtic

The Retro Celtic @RetroCeltic · 41m That was dreadful today. Takes me back to the 90’s. I’m a fan of Brendan but even I’m starting to ask why he actually accepted the job. Unless a minimum of 4 starting signings are made then this season will be bleak.

Prague67 · 53m Something not right with us and it has to be sorted quickly

@siamesebhoy · 1h Disappointing result for Celtic today but fans must remain patient. There’s a long way to go. The team are missing key players who have either left the club or are injured and need supported. Club are working hard on transfers but will not buy for buying sake.

walshybhoy · 1h It is unreal how Angeball has been dismantled so quickly, doesn’t look a fraction of the team under Rodgers. Some big games approaching…

Celtic drew a blank against St Johnstone and needed two excellent second-half saves from Joe Hart to prevent the Perth side pulling off a shock win.

Dimitar Mitov celebrated his first call-up to the Bulgaria squad by making a hat-trick of saves from Matt O’Riley, who should probably have done better with at least two of the chances.

But Celtic otherwise struggled to test the Saints goalkeeper in a flat goalless display and only mustered five shots on target in total.

The visitors handed out three debuts after losing their previous four matches, but they looked compact before both Dara Costelloe and substitute Stevie May were denied by Hart.

The draw keeps Celtic a point ahead of Rangers in the cinch Premiership, but a second below-par performance in a row following their Viaplay Cup defeat at Kilmarnock did little for their confidence ahead of their of their trip to Ibrox next Sunday.

Celtic had a new-look central defence amid injuries to all other options. Gustaf Lagerbielke was handed his home debut while Liam Scales made his first Celtic appearance in 18 months after spending last season on loan at Aberdeen.

Alistair Johnston made his first appearance of the season after an ankle injury, while David Turnbull and Yang Hyun-jun came in.

St Johnstone manager Steven MacLean handed debuts to loan signings Luke Robinson, Jay Turner-Cooke and Costelloe.

MacLean had bluntly told his players their previous performance at Ross County was unacceptable and he dropped captain Liam Gordon and May to the bench, while there was no place for Ryan McGowan.

Johnston set up the first chance, which Kyogo Furuhashi swept just wide first time.

Turnbull’s deft corner was met on the volley by O’Riley, only for Mitov to push the ball over the crossbar and the Denmark Under-21 international had another effort stopped before setting up Yang to blaze over.

St Johnstone’s only half-chance in the first 45 minutes fell for Luke Jephcott, who sliced wide from Graham Carey’s free-kick.

O’Riley had his best chance early in the second half when Johnston’s cutback found him unmarked, but the midfielder again could not beat Mitov from close range.

It was clear Celtic needed a spark come the hour mark and Brendan Rodgers put on Anthony Ralston, Sead Haksabanovic and Liel Abada.

Haksabanovic, playing in a number 10 role, soon set up O’Riley, but the midfielder was stretching with his right foot and missed the target.

Gordon replaced the injured Considine in the Saints central defence before Mitov turned Haksabanovic’s 25-yard strike past the post.

Saints almost stunned the home fans with their first attack of the half. Costelloe flicked the ball over Scales on the byline and volleyed an effort which was heading for the top corner, only for Hart to flick out his hand and divert it behind for a corner.

Furuhashi hit a half-chance wide before Saints had another great chance when Carey sent May clear. Hart narrowed the angle and blocked the shot before Carey sent the rebound over.

Substitute James Forrest headed Ralston’s cross over, but there was no late onslaught and Mitov saved comfortably from Abada during eight minutes of stoppage-time before the final whistle was met by boos among the home fans.

Celtic in choppy waters ahead of Rangers trip despite one bright spark in St Johnstone stalemate

After the plain sailing of last season – when Ange Postecoglou’s side were near flawless on the domestic front in claiming every trophy on offer – one poor result followed by another resembles something of a mini-crisis for returning manager Brendan Rodgers. It is unfamiliar territory for this Celtic side – and for Rodgers himself given the success of his first tenure – which is only partly attributed to the injury situation currently gripping the club.

A makeshift defence saw Liam Scales make an unconvincing first Celtic start in 548 days since a 2-0 defeat away to Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League in February 2021. The 25-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Aberdeen, could only have expected to be on his way out of the club this week. Now suddenly thrust into first-team action with a trip to Ibrox looming and partnered alongside another center-back two years his younger in Gustaf Lagerbielke, himself making only his second Celtic appearance since joining from Elfsborg. No wonder there were shaky moments at the back in spite of the return of first-choice right-back Alistair Johnston, making his first start under Rodgers after missing pre-season with an ankle injury.

Celtic were missing four centre-halves and seven players in total but against a St Johnstone side who had started the season badly – exiting the Viaplay Cup in ignominious fashion and losing their opening two league fixtures – a home win was expected to soothe concerns built up among the Celtic support following the loss at Rugby Park.

But those concerns have only grown after a powderpuff display against a much more resilient Perth side for whom Bulgarian goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov impressed alongside the rest of his team-mates – which included three debutant loanees brought up from England in the past week – in not only shutting out the home side but threatening to steal the three points in a second half that had the near 60,000 sell-out home crowd vexing their frustrations.

Twice Joe Hart was called into action to deny the visitors – firstly with a one-handed reflex save to keep out a Darra Costelloe volley after Scales had been turned inside-out by the on-loan Burnley forward, then to block a shot from substitute Stevie May after he had raced through unchallenged during a Saints breakaway.

Celtic’s best chances fell to Matt O’Riley either side of half-time with the midfielder twice meeting cut-backs little more than six yards but failing to beat Mitov who made brilliant blocks when a more clinical finish would have surely given him no chance.

Statistics of 75 per cent possession and 19 shots but no goals to show for it told the story for Celtic, for whom the one positive was the performance of Korean winger Hyungjun Yang, the youngster’s pace and trickery on the left on his first start catching the eye. Kyogo Furuhashi, the man who Celtic so often turn to in their hour of need, went close with one first-half snapshot, but was mostly well marshalled and starved of service.

Celtic struggled to create the longer the match went on and that continued through eight minutes of added time. For St Johnstone this can be a turning point. Celtic will hope theirs comes against Rangers next week.

St Johnstone put bodies on the line to deny Celtic

Celtic did not deserve to beat St Johnstone, says manager Brendan Rodgers, after his side dropped their first points of the Scottish Premiership season against their stubborn visitors.

Last season’s treble winners had been looking to bounce back from their Viaplay Cup defeat by Kilmarnock last time out.

But, despite dominating from start to finish, they squandered the chances they did manage to create in a laboured display as visiting goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov produced a series of important saves.

Celtic also had Joe Hart to thank for sparing their blushes further as the former England goalkeeper denied debutant Dara Costelloe and Stevie May after rare second-half counter-attacks from the visitors.

The draw ends their run of nine consecutive wins over St Johnstone since December 2020, and means Rodgers’ side go into next weekend’s first Old Firm derby of the season a point ahead of Rangers.

The latest St Johnstone news

“I think St Johnstone deserved something from the game,” Rodgers said. “We lacked a number of things you need to win the game. We have to show a little bit more imagination, a bit more quality to penetrate.

“Sometimes after you win the treble, it can happen. You put so much into last season then you come into this season, there’s a great expectation, opponents will always up their game against you, but it’s my job to find the solutions.

“It’s still early in the season, but clearly there’s still lots of work to do. We certainly need to improve the squad and hopefully we can do that.”

Celtic started promisingly when Kyogo fired just wide, David Turnbull had a shot blocked in front of goal, and Mitov made a fine double save from Matt O’Riley.

The Bulgarian would go on to save with his feet again from a close-range O’Riley shot, before the Denmark also fired another chance over.

Sead Haksabanovic had a low drive superbly touched wide by Mitov, while fellow substitute James Forrest headed wastefully over.

However, it could have been worse for the hosts had Hart not been on hand to deny a St Johnstone side whose performance deserves credit, especially given Steven MacLean had given debuts to three loan signings and handed Luke Jephcott a first start.

Lack of Celtic intensity as ‘home truths’ come good – analysis

Rodgers had gone into the game suggesting that his squad was weaker than the one that won the treble last season under Ange Postecoglou.

His preparations had been disrupted further by injuries in defence which led to Liam Scales being handed a first appearance since February 2022 in a new centre-back pairing with recent signing Gustaf Lagerbielke.

However, the reshaped defence was rarely tested by a St Johnstone side who, whether by design or lack of capability, rarely ventured out of their own half.

It was up front where Celtic looked pedestrian compared to the side that swept all before them domestically last season with their famed intensity and ability to pull apart tight defences under Rodgers’ Australian predecessor.

St Johnstone arrived on the back of what manager MacLean described as two weeks of “home truths”, a “mini pre-season” and a clutch of new signings since a dismal defeat by Ross County.

They were focused on simply surviving the Celtic Park experience, yet came mightily close to inflicting Celtic’s first home league defeat since January 2021 and ending a 27-game wait for a win over the Glasgow side.

It also ended their own run of four straight losses to give a hint of better times ahead.
What they said
