Summary

“Anything is possible” – ‘Work hard and smart, see where it takes us,’
Rodgers Pre-match

“It’s about scoring goals when the chances come. Last season we had the chances – but we didn’t convert them to goals.”
Kyogo pre match on Champions League

𝘼𝙧𝙣𝙚 𝙎𝙡𝙤𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝘾𝙚𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙘- “Celtic have been a better club in the last decade, I think you have to rate them differently than Rangers.”-  “It’s not like I’ll rate any of the three clubs (in differently. Celtic are the only champions & you have to have a lot of respect for that.”

“I love being here, I love being part of the team.”
Joe Hart

“I think success for us as a club is to be in Europe after Christmas. That’s what our aim is.”
Brendan Rodgers (pre-match)

“There’s five games to go. Hopefully they’ll be walking off thinking, ‘we didn’t give up, we didn’t quit’, and there’s another game at Celtic Park to get them back. We have to take the lesson of playing with 11 men at this level. But the most positive thing is how we started the game and the fact that we didn’t give up when we went down to nine men. We have five games to try and fix it.”
Rodgers Post-Match

“The players showed great attitude and courage…”
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is focusing on the positives after their Champions League defeat to Feyenoord

Richie87 of KDS:

We had moments of good play and several moments of really bad play all in all, it feels like an opportunity missed.

In my own opinion this is how I seen it

Hart, totally should have stopped the free kick but saved the penalty
Taylor just not good enough at that level passing poor running into trouble
Scales was the best he could be
Lagerbielke was okay to a point but the sending off was harsh,
Johnston the best of the four and one of the best in the night
O’Riely played really well and was the best of us
McGregor finding it difficult at present apart from Huns he’s not clicked in yet
Hatate was too wasteful didn’t pass when he should tried passes that just weren’t there at this level his game craft was poor
Palma he needs about 3 weeks of intense training to get him up to speed also if he’s a one trick pony cutting inside he needs some new skills
Maeda always the same for me hard working and again one of the better players
Kyogo never really had a foot in the game no service so no blame

Holm was okay for the bit I saw him but the tackle was poor at best
Iwata did okay for his bit
Yang didn’t get to see him as he ended up defending the majority of the time

I will say that playing out from the back no matter what is pish and BR had his tactics wrong that’s okay in the domestic games but against better opposition’s we would have been 5/6 down

PMSW of KDS:

Thought we did well at times but as per, we shoot ourselves in the foot.

Penalty was harsh but can see why it wasn’t overturned and Holm was a bit unlucky but the red was right. Not sure that would have been given against us in SPL though. By that I mean I think a SPL clogger would have got away with it if the tackle was on one of our players.

Taylor was terrible in the first half and only poor in the second. Hatate was poor all night. Not for the first time in the CL. No idea who he thinks is going to come in with a big offer for him. He’s not good enough for top level football.

The first goal has too much wrong with it to go into. Hart though kind of proved all of us right as to why we want an upgrade.

Thought the ref was poor all night. Way too keen to give us cards but not them for the most.

Also noticed that a couple of people had Johnstone in their MOM nominations. I thought he was poor tonight. Needs to start using his brain a bit more and learning when to dive in and when not to more to the point.

It seems that every single time we play a European game we get no luck at all and get punished for every mistake. I still think there’s something for us in this group. We can definitely beat Feyernooord if that is their level and hopefully take point(s) from Lazio.

Solaire of KDS:

Ref was a joke, straight in with bookings for our guys, not bothered when theirs did the same.

Tactics were good, gave us a good chance of getting something before the usual suspects did what they do.

The obvious weak links in the side were ruthlessly exposed. Hart is a massive liability, look forward to seeing him against atletico and Lazio.

Speaking of liabilities, I like how Taylor has taken to giving his man so much time and space to use the ball that they lose it of their own volition shooting, crossing, or passing, and just never attempts to get close as that isn’t on the cards in the first place. I’m pretty sure full-backs are not meant to concede space all the way into their own box like that. Nor are they meant to afford their man enough time and space to receive 70 yard switches while off balance. BUT, on the plus side, he can pass the ball sideways, sometimes, a bit, not particularly well, but he isn’t literally the worst player on the pitch in that respect like he is with most other things.

O’Riley was very good, Maeda and Kyogo will get joy at this level with their pace and clever pressing. Scales was good, no caveats. Johnstone’s a baller.

The board and recruitment team are absolute clowns.

Celticunderground @celticrumours: That was a winnable game. Authors of our own misfortune there. I thought we were set up not to lose which is sensible given the competition, the injuries and the previous experiences. Free kick gubbed it. Red card double gubbed it. Next red card tri… well… you get the idea.

Stevie Jackson @bobby__peru · 9h Tough watch as the game went on. Up until the first goal it was fairly even. We don’t seem to have any sort of definable style and we don’t yet seem to attack, defend or press as a team. Early days but we are a fair bit weaker than last season, even allowing for the injuries.

E-Tims @ETimsNet FT Feyenoord 2 #Celtic 0 Played well 1st half. Good shape. Good tactics. Evenly balanced. As we do, gave away dreadful goal on HT. Soft pen in 2nd. Lagerbielke a wee bit unlucky. Holm with a poor challenge straight red. 2nd goal v 9 men. Scales excellent. Onwards and upwards!

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · 10h Celtic need to just take the loss and try and see this out with as little damage as possible, 3rd place might come down to head to heads against each other.

Li’l Ze @LilZe_7 · 10h Celtic away in Europe is scripted.

Boyle @Boyle_67 · 9h Only positive performance was big Scales again the night, he’s went from being unwanted by most to being the one trying to hold it all together for us at the back. Still 72 million in the bank and all that.

HP: Everything in the game was self-inflicted. From the first goal , to the red card leading to the penalty then the rash tackle from Holm. How we got out of there with only a 2 goal defeat God only knows.

Celtic’s chastening Champions League night: Two red cards and costly free-kick as Feyenoord prevail in Rotterdam

Celtic had Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm sent off within five minutes of each other as they opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Feyenoord in Rotterdam.

Calvin Stengs gave Feyenoord the lead in first-half stoppage-time when his 30-yard free-kick evaded a poor attempt at a defensive wall. Joe Hart saved a penalty after Lagerbielke received a second yellow card and substitute Holm soon got a straight red card in the 68th minute. Alireza Jahanbakhsh got the home side’s second goal as Celtic toiled to keep the Dutch club in check on a chastening night for the Scottish Premiership champions at De Kuip.

Centre-back Lagerbielke was one of two summer signings in the Celtic starting line-up with Nat Phillips ruled out by an ankle injury. The other, winger Luis Palma, made his first start for the club. There was a lively atmosphere inside De Kuip for the first meeting between the teams since Feyenoord’s 1970 European Cup final triumph and the first Champions League game in the stadium for six seasons.

Celtic took the edge off the atmosphere with a positive start and Reo Hatate got the first shot on target after the Hoops won the ball high up the park, but his effort lacked power. Celtic continued to look comfortable and could have made more of their possession had Hatate and Daizen Maeda been sharper on the ball at times. The hosts rarely threatened to get in behind in the opening half hour and on the one occasion they did Alistair Johnston came across to cover. Hatate’s pass got Matt O’Riley in behind but his ball towards Kyogo Furuhashi was cut out and Hart made his first save in the 34th minute when he pushed over Yankubah Minteh’s long-range strike.

At the other end, Maeda broke away and saw a dangerous effort pushed wide despite being fouled in the act of shooting. The Japan international was soon culpable for a counter-attack the other way after stopping in anticipation of a throw-in as Johnston kept the ball in, but Hart saved from Quiulindschy Hartman.

Celtic looked set to go into the dressing room deservedly level before O’Riley gave away a free-kick. Celtic’s wall failed to provide much protection especially as Furuhashi inadvertently got out of the way of the ball as he jumped. Stengs’ shot curled away from Hart with the goalkeeper unable to keep it out despite getting his hands on it.

Palma cut inside and saw his shot beaten away after the interval before Holm came on along with Yang Hyun-jun in the 58th minute. Celtic were soon down to 10 men, though. Lagerbielke had been booked in the first half for bringing down an opponent after his own poor control, and the Swede caught Igor Paixao in the throat with his arm as he tried to jockey the forward in the box. Hart saved Paixao’s penalty as he dived to his right.

Brendan Rodgers brought on midfielder Tomoki Iwata for Furuhashi to play alongside Liam Scales in central defence, but Celtic’s task got even harder when Holm lunged in for a challenge and caught Mats Wieffer high up his shin. The visitors were rightly frustrated that Bosnian referee Irfan Peljto had failed to award a clear foul against Scales seconds earlier but there was little doubt about the red card decision that followed.

Stengs set up Lutsharel Geertruida to score from the resulting free-kick but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR check. The extra men counted in the 76th minute though when Alireza Jahanbakhsh fired high into the net from 12 yards and the closing stages were about damage limitation for Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers trudges off after Celtic’s 2-0 defeat by Feyenoord in Rotterdam.
The Scottish Premiership champions ended the match with nine men following red cards to Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm, with Feyenoord scoring goals via Calvin Stengs and Alireza Jahanbakaskh to secure the win at De Kuip. However, McGregor hailed the team’s spirit when numerically inferior and believes Celtic can use that spirit to bounce back in the forthcoming matches.

“It was a difficult game,” said McGregor. “I thought we started it really well, but they get the goal just before half time and that undoes a lot of the good work in the first half. And then to get two men sent off in quick succession takes the game away from us. But the boys hung in there. It could be easy to go down three, four, five, which is testament to the group.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers expressed his disappointment with the manner of Feyenoord’s opener, which came via a free-kick. “I feel for the players,” he said. “I think for the first 60 minutes it was a very even game against a team that’s doing well and scoring a lot of goals, and we matched them. I’m disappointed with the goal. We made a decision in the game to adjust the wall and it cost us, but we’ll take that, I don’t mind players making decisions in-game. Very disappointed with the two sendings off and nine men is obviously very difficult. If we get to the last game to play Feyenoord at home with everything to play for, we’ll be in with a fantastic chance.”

Rodgers believes the red cards for Lagerbielke and Holm were down to inexperience. “First one you just have to shepherd it through to the goalkeeper, don’t get into the fight as it’s getting to Joe Hart,” added Rodgers. “It’s just inexperience. And Odin is a fantastic young player, he’ll learn from that, you can’t go to ground like that, particularly in Europe and he’ll learn from that.”

In the other match in Group E, Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel scored a dramatic equaliser five minutes into stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid. The Italians are next up for Celtic in Glasgow on October 4.

Feyenoord 2-0 Celtic: Inexperience costs but can Champions League lessons be learned?

‘We’ve been dismissed but we showed we can compete’

In the aftermath of another Champions League defeat, it would be easy to say ‘same old Celtic’.

The result – losing 2-0 to Feyenoord in Rotterdam in their opening group game – seemed familiar at this level but, at times, this was an accomplished display by the Scottish champions.

Getting positive results in the group stage has been increasingly elusive and not many expected Brendan Rodgers’ side to emerge with a win, or even a point in the Netherlands.

Top seeds Feyenoord have been flying of late, and boast significant recent European pedigree even if it’s six years since they played in this competition.

But the outcome, ultimately, was one in which an element of chaos took over. It’s happened before at this level.

This script felt different, though, and perhaps offers encouragement for Celtic ahead of two upcoming home fixtures.

Rodgers’ side played well in that first half, better than on many away days, before the hammer-blow of a concession deep into injury time signalled the start of the demise.

“What we showed is that we’re going to be competitive,” the manager said.

“We started off really well. We looked a threat and progressed the ball well. With better decisions we might have had an opportunity to get in front.

“Unfortunately for us we get two players sent off. It’s a difficult level at 11 v 11. The players kept going, it was harsh on them.”

Remember the context. The idea that Liam Scales would arguably be Celtic’s star man in a Champions League tie seemed fanciful a month or so ago. He has emerged as a player of potential for Rodgers going forward.

Celtic also had key players missing. All defenders. Cameron Carter-Vickers, plus new signings Maik Nawrocki and Nat Phillips. Carl Starfelt has left since last season and that loss of experience also counted.

Despite all of that, Rodgers’ side showed a high level of control, initially, against their fancied opponents. The squad will likely improve as injuries clear.

“Celtic shaded it for me in the first half. They had the better chances to score,” said Sportsound pundit James McFadden. “They have to take the positives which there were plenty.

“Overall, in general, he’s got to be happy with the performance of his players along with the disappointment of losing the game.

“The decision-making in the final third, the willingness to maybe take that chance going forward or play the pass, that was there. That’s the things they can look at and say ‘Can we do that better?’
‘It could have been three, four or five’

Notably, Celtic’s centre-back pairing had no Champions League experience at all heading into this.

Inexperience eventually cost the Premiership side with both Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Holm earning red cards which could, and should, have been avoided.

Those quick-fire moments meant there was no way back as Feyenoord seized on the opportunity.

“I’m very disappointed with the two sending offs and playing with nine men is obviously very difficult,” Rodgers continued.

“The first one, [Lagerbielke] you just have to shepherd it through to the goalkeeper, don’t get into the fight as it’s getting to Joe Hart, it’s just inexperience.

“And Odin is a fantastic young player, he’ll learn from that, you can’t go to ground like that, particularly in Europe and he’ll learn from that.”

Learning is what Celtic now need. They’ve shown a capability to offer something that Rodgers will hope will bring the points to meet his aim of European football beyond Christmas.

Despite being two men down, the scoreline remained respectable as captain Callum McGregor pointed out post-match.

“It would have been easy to lose three, four or five at that point which is testament to the group,” he said.

“Then to get two men sent off in quick succession takes the game away from us. It’s hard enough with 11 men, never mind nine. We’ll learn the lesson.

“There are five games to go so hopefully they’ll be walking off thinking we didn’t give up. We didn’t quit. We were still fighting for each other at the end.

It’s a disappointing night but we have five games to try and fix it.”

The former Celtic midfielder Aiden McGeady shared that optimism and insisted the manager would have been heartened by much of what he saw.

“I think he’s never going to be happy after a 2-0 defeat but that’s probably the happiest I’ve seen a manager after a 2-0 defeat,” he said on Sportsound.

“I think he’s looking at the first 60 minutes and saying to himself and to the players ‘we’re at this level and we’ve shown that, we just have to be a bit more clinical and a bit more cute with our final ball, with decision making’.”

Celtic already trailed by a goal when Gustaf Lagerbielke was shown a second yellow card

Celtic’s quest for a rare Champions League away victory goes on after having two men sent off in a second-half implosion to hand top seeds Feyenoord an opening group win.

It was a night that began with such promise, as Brendan Rodgers’ side started brightly in search of a first away win in the competition since beating Anderlecht in 2017.

But it ended with another painful European defeat that leaves them bottom of the group after Lazio and Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 in Rome.

Things began to go wrong after a mature and composed opening half, when a long-range Calvin Stengs free-kick pierced the defensive wall and skimmed beyond Joe Hart.

The goalkeeper might have done better. The defensive wall might have too. Celtic never quite recovered.

The goal lifted the Dutch champions, who had struggled until then, and they capitalised in the second half as Celtic’s night completely unravelled.

Gustaf Lagerbielke conceded a penalty for a tug in the box on Igor Paixao and was shown a second yellow card, before Hart offered some hope with a great save from Paixao’s spot-kick.

The task become too great, though, when substitute Odin Thiago Holm crashed wildly into a tackle and earned a straight red.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh then made sure of Feyenoord’s win after being gifted time and space to finish emphatically.

It was the least the Dutch deserved, with further efforts disallowed either side of that goal as Celtic hung on. Ultimately, they got away with not losing by a bigger margin.

Lazio come to Glasgow next. An already daunting challenge suddenly looks even tougher.
Player of the match – Calvin Stengs (Feyenoord)
Calvin Stengs
Stengs’ opener ultimately proved crucial. It open the gates for Feyenoord and it could be argued he used the conditions to his advantage in his execution
Major lessons need to be learned – analysis

The timing of the opener was such a hammer blow for Celtic. To that point they had more than matched their opponents, who struggled to engineer consistent pressure.

Celtic had a good balance of being fairly solid, with a decent shape, composed on the ball in the main and carrying some threat. They had chances and one or two better decisions may have paid dividends.

Daizen Maeda had two good opportunities, the first after after great work from Matt O’Riley, and Reo Hatate’s shot was blocked.

But the opening goal was absolutely crucial. Feyenoord returned with more purpose and tempo after half-time. It counted and Celtic’s night fell apart .

With nine men on the pitch it looked like a mission impossible. So it proved.

Celtic will take some heart from that opening half but major lessons will need to be learned ahead of the visit of Lazio.

Celtic have kept just one clean sheet in their 37 Champions League away games, conceding 89 goals. Their record of 2.4 goals conceded per game is the highest of any side to have played more than 30 times on the road in the competition.
Celtic became just the second team to have two players sent off on their Champions League debut in the same match, after KAA Gent in September 2015.
Feyenoord’s Stengs became the first player to score a direct free-kick goal in his Champions League debut since Riyad Mahrez for Leicester in September 2016.
Stengs has been involved in six goals in his last four games for Feyenoord in all competitions, scoring two and assisting four.
Jahanbakhsh became the sixth Asian player to score on his Champions League debut, with Iranian players accounting for half of those (also Mehdi Mahdavikia and Ali Karimi).
Hart became the first Celtic goalkeeper to save a Champions Legue penalty since Artur Boruc against Manchester United in November 2006. They had conceded their last five spot kicks in the competition before this.
Lagerbielke and Holm were sent off within five minutes of each other. Celtic had only been shown two red cards in their previous 72 Champions League matches.
