Summary
Daizen Maeda with a brilliant finish to round off a 3-0 win for Celtic over Livingston!
“We always have a plan if we go down to 10 men and the Bhoys worked brilliantly. How they blocked spaces and keeping a threat going forward. When you have Daizen Maeda in your team you don’t really have 10 men!”
Brendan Rodgers
“When you have Daizen Maeda it’s not like playing with 10 men… he does the running of two guys!”
“When you have Daizen Maeda in your team, you never really have ten men. He’s unbelievable.”
Brendan Rodgers
‘Supposedly we’re struggling…’
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers responds to a question about being unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership with five wins out of six
Fatboab of KDS: Terrific performance. Dominated the whole first half until the red card, then went all Brendan with 10 men and hit on the break. Maeda is absolutely priceless in a game like that and thoroughly deserved his wonder goal at the end.
O’Riley was superb throughout, Taylor had his best game this season and McGregor was very tidy all day.
Great result at a place we need fear no more.
Celtic Australis @celticaustralis · 1h Great three points! Team positioning and ball speed is beginning to get there. Ref was far too card happy: must have watched the CL game and got a hard on for booking Celtic players. MOR immense but yer never a man down when you’ve got Maeda in your side.
Celticunderground @celticrumours · 3h O’Riley, Taylor, McGregor, Kyogo, Johnston all very good. Maeda never stops. Iwata good when he came on. Centre halfs had a tough shift but came out with the clean sheet unlike many centre half partnerships that we’ve sent there before.
Everything Celtic @aboutceltic · 1h Liam Scales & Gustaf Lagerbielke had never played as a pair & were very quickly thrown together. Since then they’ve played four Scottish Premiership matches together & not conceded a single goal. Some respect where it’s due please

Why Celtic’s win at Livingston was so commendable: key trio, the enigma, one bit of madcappery

By dint of losing a third player to a red card inside a week you could say that Celtic appear intent on eschewing an easy life.

Yet, so utterly in control were they at Livngston subsequent to keeper Joe Hart being dismissed only half an hour in for blootering Mo Sangare at the edge of the area, such a suggestion would be misleading. Frankly, it is doubtful Celtic have ever enjoyed as cushy a confrontation on the artificial grass of Almondvale. A surface that once seemed to drain them of conviction. Instead, in the 3-0 success Brendan Rodgers’ men have that in spades.
They could not cope with the dismissals of Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm in their Champions League opening game 2-0 loss away to Feyenoord in midweek but vanquished Livingston manager David Martindale was left to despair that the visitors were on point in how they coped with being left a man short thanks to madcappery from Hart. In more than 20 years as a senior pro, the former England keeper has been there, seen it done it, thanks to an impressive international career and major honour-bagging either side of the border. The 36-year-old, though, had never had a red card waved in his direction as referee John Beaton was left with no choice but to do after he wiped out Sangare on the edge of his box.
He wasn’t there, didn’t see the ball, and done the striker well and good in coming out to attempt to clear a through ball from James Penrice the striker was chasing down. Instead, with foot high and swinging, the only contact was with his opponents’ thigh. Reckless would be putting it mildly. The luckless James Forrest – making his first start since January 2 – then forced to be sacrificed to see Scott Bain brought on to assume goalkeeping duties.

It felt like the sending off could be a turning point, even as Celtic then led 1-0 through a streaky Reo Hatate penalty – tamely hit but which Shamal George still allowed to go through his body. A 13th-minute award earned by the Japanese playmaker when he was picked out by a sumptuous through ball from the excellent Greg Taylor had allowed him to turn Luiyi de Lucas, before he was impeded by the defender’s outstretched leg. And even with Rodgers’ men having exhibited slickness and strong will on a surface, and against an opponent, that has made such facets elusive in past West Lothian sorties. Instead, the visitors made light work of any perceived obstacles with Martindale moved to state that their “shape, and their application within their shape, was fantastic”.
Inside three minutes of the second period, the contest was administered the last rites courtesy of an increasingly familiar source. This goal, and the cherry on top, 93rd minute third, demonstrating the enigma that is Daizen Maeda. A Kyogo Furuhashi cross set him up for a tap-in… only for the attacker to see it come off his backside and George push at it before it dropped for Matt O’Riley to sweetly tuck in for a fourth goal in eight games. Yet, the perpetual motion Maeda, whose touch can vary from elephantine to exquisite, more than made up for the miss when he deliciously shifted the ball from his right to left and curled into the top corner for a finish out of the top of the top drawer. Rodgers was left agog by the player’s tireless work rate – which led him to quip it didn’t feel like his team were a man down when he effectively puts in a double-shift – and claimed he was at his best when not restricting himself to piling up and down the flank.
“When we were down to ten, he was playing up front and that is his best position,” said the 50-year-old. “I have said that before. He is pressing and running in behind. He was there for Matty’s goal and I think he was unfortunate because the ball comes in and pops up and the keeper then has to make the save.”
Celtic gave every indication that they are starting to purr with so many sound displays. Led by Callum McGregor dictating, and Taylor and O’Riley helping move Livingston around and out of shape, there was so much to commend about them in circumstances that Martindale bemoaned should have offered his team a glaring opportunity to hurt them.
And Rodgers wasn’t for reading too much into losing three players inside an hour’s play, essentially. Agreeing that the injudicious moments that brought banishment for Hart, and Lagerbielke and Holm, in Rotterdam, spoke of poor decision-making rather than any indiscipline. “On this occasion you can’t put it down to inexperience…”, he said with a smile over his most senior player being dismissed, on the back of two youngsters suffering that fate in the De Kuip. “It was the first sending-off in Joe’s career. The ball pops up and on a grass pitch it runs through. I’ve never had problems with indiscipline with teams. But we certainly don’t want to make a habit of playing with nine or ten men. Joe apologised to his team-mates. I might get him to get sent off every week….
“You have to do your job. You don’t get points here for style. You have to dig in and be resilient. I thought we played well on a difficult surface and stylistically I thought we played better on the surface with ten men. Every win is important. There is always a notion that when you play against a team in a Champions League week, you get after them and set about them.” When Celtic set themselves in such measured fashion even without their full complement, it is difficult for any Scottish rival to get after them.
David Martindale showers praise on Celtic and dismisses ‘not the same’ Ange Postecoglou comparison

And the performance of Brendan Rodgers in the 3-0 victory at the Tony Macaroni Arena, for the 49-year-old gave the lie to claims that they have dipped from the level that snared them the title under Ange Postecoglou last season. Signs that they were finding their groove evident, he felt, in aspects of their play even in losing their Champions League opener away to Feyenoord 2-0 with nine men.
Martindale was despairing of his side’s inability to capitalise on Joe Hart’s 30th minute red card with the score at 1-0 following a “schoolboy error” with Luiyi de Lucas’ concession of a penalty converted by Reo Hatate, but he was magnanimous in his assessment of his opponents across the afternoon.
“I thought when Celtic went down to 10 men they stuck to their task very well, and got an early goal in the second half to make it 2-0,” he said. “And from that stage onwards, I have to be brutally honest, I thought they were fantastic in their application and how they approached the game. Celtic were worth their money. I thought they worked a lot harder than us all over the park. Their application, their endeavour, their desire was probably a lot better than what we showed against 10 men. Sitting here, hugely frustrated at the result, but I don’t think we deserved more from the game in all honesty. There was a big chance for Joel Nouble at 2-0, if he puts that away you are back in the game at that stage. But the longer the game goes on, the longer it was 2-0, the players really, really struggled with Celtic’s shape and their application within their shape was fantastic.
“They can do both [outplay you and outwork you], and I think they have always done both, if I’m honest, since Ange’s days. I watched them on Tuesday and I thought they were fantastic in the press, trying to get the ball back. There have been a few things floating about ‘aw, they are not the same’ ‘they’ve not clicked’ but, nah, I think you saw a wee bit of a change with the Champions League and then today, I think they showed true character and true spirit when they went down to 10 men. But we shoot ourselves in the foot by giving away a really avoidable second goal. When I look at all three goals, really avoidable goals.
“We are probably not expected to get anything from the game with 11 v 11. But, when Celtic go down to 10 men after 30 minutes, I’m not having that we shouldn’t expect to get something from the game. Expectations go up at that point, but the harsh reality is we got beat 2-0 with 10 men. That is the harsh reality of the situation. And I don’t think we defended our final third well enough and that is something I’ll have to look at.”

The fan had run only to be clamped by a burly security man while attempting to get among the players as they acclaimed their travelling faithful at the conclusion of a hugely impressive victory. Earned despite playing 10 men for more than an hour following a red card for keeper Joe Hart. Rodgers felt the incident was heavy-handed and helped the youngster escape to disappear back into the stands.
“The guy was about 20 stones trying to hold him down when he’s about six years of age,” said the Irishman “What can you do? I told the guy to get off him. He’s just a child seeing his heroes. And then I just made sure he got away…”
Rodgers delighted in his players not allowing the encounter to get away from them subsequent to the first dismissal of Hart’s near two-decade senior career. Not least because they ended with nine men for the 2-0 loss away to Feyenoord in their Champions League opener on Tuesday evening. Though the 50-year-old quipped that the ceaseless industry of Daizen Maeda, who added a third in added time with a sumptuous hit, made it feel like his side were not a body short.

“It was a monumental win, in terms of getting back in after playing with nine men during the week,” the Celtic manager said. “Livingston is a notoriously hard place to come anyway, never mind with ten men, so to play with that mentality was very good. Attitude and energy you need, and that is what we had. Great move for the penalty [to go 1-0 in 13 minutes], our movement was excellent.
“We go down to ten men and then we always have a plan for that in terms of how we work, how we keep the calmness. I thought the players were outstanding [and we scored] two really good goals in the second half. As I said to the guys, when you have Daizen Maeda, it is not like playing with ten men. He does the running of two men, he is absolutely incredible and I was so happy for him that he got his goal. He was so good on the day for us.”

The 36-year-old was shown a straight red card in the 28th minute – with Celtic already a goal to the good – after racing from his box and clattering into Mohammed Sangare as the Livingston forward bore down on goal.
Referee John Beaton gave the former England stopper his marching orders for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, but Lennon felt the challenge alone, which was late and high, was worthy of a red card.
“It’s reckless as well from Joe,” Lennon told Sky Sports. “He’s fully committed and you just can’t make a challenge like that. In commentary they were saying it was last man, but it could have been for reckless endangerment of a player as well. It’s a clear red card.”
Hart’s dismissal – his first in 737 appearances for club and country – failed to prevent the Hoops from claiming the three points as Reo Hatate’s penalty opener was followed by second-half strikes from Matt O’Riley and Daizen Maeda.
“It’s never simple and straightforward but Celtic made it look that way,” Lennon added. “I thought they were outstanding today. That’s a real statement of intent for the rest of the season.
“I thought the way they handled the sending off in the second half was superb. To come away with a 3-0 win with 10 men for a long period in the game was magnificent. A total comprehensive victory from start to finish.”

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart fouls on Livingston’s Mo Sangare
Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart was dismissed in the 28th minute for this challenge on Mo Sangare
Celtic produced “a monumental effort” to pick up three Scottish Premiership points at Livingston after goalkeeper Joe Hart’s red card, said manager Brendan Rodgers.
Hart, who shouldered the blame for Feyenoord’s opener in a midweek loss that saw Celtic finish with nine men, this time saw red for a professional foul on Mo Sangare before the break.
But Livingston, already behind to a Reo Hatate penalty, could not make their numerical advantage count and Matt O’Riley tapped in Celtic’s second before a late stunner from Daizen Maeda capped the win.
The defending champions moved to 16 points from a possible 18 and will be top at the end of the sixth round of fixtures. Livingston’s loss was their second in the league this season and they remain on six points.
“We have to show another side to us when we go down to 10 men,” Rodgers told BBC Scotland. “I thought the players dealt with it brilliantly. Tactically they were very good. Defensively we were strong.
“It was an outstanding win for us. Huge credit to the players. It’s a monumental effort on the back end of a Champions League week.”
Reaction to Celtic’s win & how it happened
The latest Livingston news
Keep up to date with Celtic
Four days on from their Champions League defeat in Rotterdam, Celtic were out to reassert domestic dominance but almost fell behind early on. Bruce Anderson forced a save from Hart, with Scott Pittman’s subsequent attempt cleared off the line by Callum McGregor.
Rodgers’ side upped their intent and Hatate raced through to meet Greg Taylor’s pass, only to be fouled by Luiyi De Lucas. The Japanese midfielder’s spot-kick squirmed under the body of Shamal George for a first goal of the season.
It was crucial the hosts kept themselves in touch and George made a fine save to deny Maeda.
Hart’s game came to an end after Sangare chased a long ball and was clattered by the goalkeeper outside the area. James Forrest made way for reserve keeper Scott Bain.
The 10 players saw out a frantic end to the first half and doubled their lead early in the second. Kyogo Furuhashi’s cross should have been converted by Maeda, with the ball coming back off George for O’Riley to finish.
Bain almost gave Livi a route back into the game when he was robbed by Joel Nouble right in front of goal, but the towering forward contrived to chip over the bar.
George again saved from Maeda, and Celtic substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu fired narrowly wide, but a third goal arrived in added time when Maeda curled into the top left corner from the edge of the box – his first goal of the season.

Depleted Celtic back to winning ways – analysis
Defensively, Livingston’s main task was staying in the game. Going forward, decision-making was always going to be key. On both counts, they fell short.
Without captain Mikey Devlin at the back, the home side were pulled left and right by Kyogo and Maeda and the Livi forwards only fleetingly troubled either of the keepers they faced.
While Tuesday offered a reminder of the levels Celtic must try to meet to compete in the Champions League, the forcefulness and resilience they showed in West Lothian demonstrated just how hard domestic opponents must work to trouble the league leaders.
The disruption caused by the Hart incident – Celtic’s third sending-off in two games – turned the contest into a much scrappier one for Rodgers’ side. Regardless, they passed the test.
What the managers said
Livingston manager David Martindale: “If we had ended that game 1-0, we probably could’ve taken it on the chin but ultimately we lost that game 2-0 against 10 men. My expectations, the players’, the staff’s expectations are greater than that. That’s really the disappointing aspect of the game.
“Against 10 men for 60 minutes, we’ve got to do better. And I’ve got to hold my hands up as well. Maybe I never quite got my substitutions right. Credit to Celtic.”
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “It’s the first time [Joe Hart’s] been sent off in his career. It gave us a chance to show our mentality and personality and we definitely showed that.
“I think we’re getting better. I’m just so happy for the players and the supporters. Happy for Daizen Maeda as well – it’s not like playing with 10 men when you have him in the team because he covers so much ground.”
