Summary
“We are into a run of games now, which is really exciting and Tynecastle is the first of those.”
Brendan Rodgers (Pre-match)
Hearts head coach Steven Naismith: “Today is not a good day in terms of our progression.
“We created our own downfall. The goals are really sloppy. Then we get into good positions but our final ball lets us down.
“Throughout the season we’ve been a bit more solid, but these small moments are costing us. We need to rectify it.”
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “When we miss the penalty, the stadium gets a lift but we worked through it to get the third goal.
“The players are finding their feet. Celtic is a team that always has to win, but you need to do that in a certain style. That comes with development.
“There are areas where we can improve. When we get to 3-1 and 4-1, we can manage the ball a bit better and maybe be more clinical.”
“Overall, after an international break full of travel – the players have come here and put in a very convincing performance.”
Brendan “The players know what’s required and you can see that in their game. There’s still more to come”.
Brendan “Fantastic win for us. Disappointed we didn’t score more. To play that well was very impressive. MOR is a wonderful footballer. Run and finish very good. Celtic have always had a talisman up front. Kyogo is a fantastic focal point for us”
Kyogo: “The next goal will be 70, then hopefully I’ll reach 100! I’m enjoying football, I think it’s clear for everyone to see” Kyogo shares his delight at reaching 60 Celtic goals and how he’s enjoying life with Brendan Rodgers in-charge
El Salto of KDS:
A great win, and a great performance
Our play in possession was wonderful at times, plus we closed them down every time they came forward
Always in control, and definitely clicking onto what Brendan wants from his team
Subs all played their part as well
Best for me were MOR, Hatate, despite the penalty miss, Scales, CCV and Palma……..ffs could go through the whole team
So much I agree with in other posts but the quote function plus likes seem to be unavailable
Celticunderground @celticrumours Away to… Aberdeen Rangers Livingston (with 10 men) Motherwell Hearts Won them all, 7pts clear and just starting to hit our form. Manager knows what he is doing.
E-Tims @ETimsNet Attack, attack, attack…and there’s Iwata with a stunning finish off the underside of the bar. His first goal for Celtic. He’s been excellent since he came on 4-1
E-Tims @ETimsNet Just watching the replay just now. MORs run for the opening goal is fitba intelligence off the charts. Run on the blindside of opponent to meet fine pass from Palma…and then what a finish
Hail Hail History @hailhailhistory Perfect solution to the away ticket allocation debate. Hearts could just sell second-half tickets to Celtic fans. Plenty of spaces to do it now.

Brendan Rodgers hails Celtic for taming Hearts hostility – but has one criticism and tells youngsters who to learn from
https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/brendan-rodgers-hails-celtic-for-taming-hostility-at-hearts-but-has-one-criticism-in-4-1-win-4380987
Brendan Rodgers believes his Celtic team is constantly evolving after he hailed them for rising to challenge of taming a ‘hostile’ Tynecastle and winning 4-1 against Hearts in the cinch Premiership.

The defending champions were dominant from start to finish against the Jambos, opening the scoring after just four minutes through the impressive Matt O’Riley, with Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and Tomoki Iwata netting further goals. Hearts scored a consolation strike through Lawrence Shankland midway through the second half, but were unable to trouble Celtic enough and have now lost their last ten matches against them.
Rodgers, whose team’s seven-point lead at top was restored because of the win, revelled in his team’s ability to be so dominant in their first match in two weeks. “We were very, very good,” said the Celtic manager. “I think it was important that we started the game well and we tried to bring an energy and a speed to the game at the beginning that would make it difficult for Hearts. I’ve been here enough times to know that if you don’t make a good start here, it can be a challenge. But the players played some wonderful football and worked ever so hard in the game. We’re really pleased overall.”
Asked if he considered the performance at Tynecastle to be the best of the season so far, Rodgers responded. “It’s constant evolution, there’s not a destination to where we want to go. It’s just continual improvement and finding levels. I think the big thing is consistency. It’s obviously a very difficult ground to come to but I love challenges like this, coming to really hostile environments, because it’s an opportunity for you to show your value and worth as a team, dealing with circumstances.
“I think the players dealt with it ever so well. My only criticism is that we could have had more goals. Their keeper has made some great saves and just when we got to 4-1, I thought we could have managed the ball better, so you are not having to run so much. You want to have a rest, rest with the ball as opposed to defend. That was my only criticism. Overall, after an international break when a lot of these guys are a wee bit heavy-legged towards the end, a lot of travel, what they gave the game was absolutely brilliant.”
O’Riley was once again central to most of Celtic’s good work. The 22-year-old midfielder scored his sixth goal of the season with a precise finish to get his team up and running and Rodgers waxed lyrical about his contribution. “He is developing and that is what you want to see,” said the Celtic boss. “It is a huge testament to him as he just wants to improve. We want to keep his game moving through the levels. His attitude to learning is brilliant as he is so honest to the game. He trains well and prepares well. He does all the right things and gives himself every chance, It was a brilliant finish. That is not an easy technique coming across your body. He makes a good run in the first place and is hungry to get in there. Then it is great finish.”
Rodgers also reserved praise for his two substitutes in Iwata, who scored his first goal for the club, and James Forrest, who the manager believed should be an example to the rest of his wingers. “It was a great finish [from Iwata] and I am pleased for him,” Rodgers added. He works so hard. Some of these guys are very important for us. They maybe not start as many games as they would like but their contribution is really important. He came on and got his first goal for the club which is terrific.
“I also thought James Forrest was brilliant when he came into the game. We don’t have a winger as bright as him in our squad yet and I told the young guys afterwards to learn from him. The players in the periphery are so important for us.”
Celtic achieve ten in a row: Limp Hearts dominated once again as Matt O’Riley lights up Tynecastle

Here we go, ten in a row. Celtic’s dominance of Hearts goes on, their tenth consecutive win over the Jambos stretching back to 2021.

It feels like a lifetime ago since Hearts gave the Premiership champions a bloody nose, which came when Covid restrictions were a thing, a 2-1 victory courtesy of a late John Souttar header. Celtic have now scored 28 goals against them since that defeat, and were miles ahead of their visitors at a sun-kissed Tynecastle. Celtic did not have to get out of second gear as they prevailed 4-1.
Hearts’ inability to do anything tangible against the Old Firm must continue to vex the club’s hierarchy, who made it clear when dispensing with manager Robbie Neilson earlier this year that results against the Glasgow duo need to improve. So far under Steven Naismith, they have picked up a point at Ibrox and lost twice to Celtic. They take on Rangers twice in the next two weeks.
Hearts will need to be much better in Govan next Sunday than they were here. Their midfield in particular failed to assume any type of control – Calem Nieuwenhof just could not get into the match and was hooked for Beni Baningime – and they only became competitive once Celtic were three goals to the good. By that point, the horse had bolted.
Celtic’s Tomoki Iwata leads the full time celebrations after the 4-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.
Celtic’s Tomoki Iwata leads the full time celebrations after the 4-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.
Hearts will lament how easily they allowed Celtic’s supremely in-form midfielder Matt O’Riley to open the scoring with his sixth goal of the season. The 22-year-old has taken his game to the next level under Brendan Rodgers and put in another excellent display. The Dane glided all over the pitch and struck just four minutes in with a quite delightful finish, breaking on to Luis Palma’s clipped ball into the penalty box and dispatching a first-time finish past Zander Clark as the ball dropped over his shoulder.
Celtic’s advantage was doubled on 23 minutes in the most simplistic fashion. Reo Hatate charged on to an O’Riley pass and squared the ball to an unmarked Daizen Maeda to bundle home from only a couple of yards out. The lack of resistance from his Hearts team will surely have pained Naismith.
Hearts were spraying misplaced passes all over the pitch – Alex Lowry was the worst culprit – and any hope of a comeback after the restart was squashed by the 51-minute mark. O’Riley missed a Palma cross but Kyogo Furuhashi was there to slam the ball past Clark. Moments earlier, Hearts had survived a penalty, when Hatate smacked the post from the spot after Alex Cochrane had felled Furuhashi in the box just 15 seconds after the restart.
Captain Lawrence Shankland did get Hearts on the scoreboard with a nice finish on 65 minutes, latching on to an errant Maeda pass and firing in off the post. It was his first goal in eight outings and the Jambos will hope it will breathe confidence into a player who has been well short of last season’s prolific form.
Celtic made sure they had the final word on 80 minutes as replacement Tomoki Iwata belted home his first goal for the club off the underside of the bar. The 576 Celtic fans inside Tynecastle – the majority held up Palestinian flags before kick off – celebrated gleefully at full time as their team restored their seven-point lead at the summit of the Premiership.

Matt O’Riley crashes in an early volley for Celtic
Matt O’Riley crashed in a sensational volley after just four minutes
Brendan Rodgers was delighted as Celtic’s rapid opening silenced Tynecastle on their way to a comfortable victory over Hearts that restored a seven-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
The home team and often raucous fans were deflated when Matt O’Riley cracked in a superb opener after four minutes, then Daizen Maeda added a close-range finish.
Reo Hatate hit the post with a second-half penalty before Kyogo Furuhashi continued his knack of scoring against Hearts.
Lawrence Shankland found his first goal since August but Celtic regained their three-goal advantage in a one-sided contest thanks to a fierce Tomoki Iwata strike.
“We needed to start with an energy that would make things difficult for Hearts because this is a place where the crowd really get behind them if they start well,” said Celtic boss Rodgers.
“Coming to grounds like this is when you find out if you’re a good team or not because you will have difficult moments, but the players dealt with it really well. That was probably as quiet as I’ve heard it here.”
For the champions it was a 10th successive win over Hearts in all competitions, with the Edinburgh side staying in fourth place, despite winning just three of their nine outings.
How it happened & reaction
Everything you need to know about Hearts
Keep up to date with Celtic
O’Riley has been in storming form this season and did not take long to make his mark. Coming in from the left, Luis Palma dinked the ball over the top of the Hearts defence and the 22-year-old let it drop over his shoulder before steering a sweetly-struck volley into the far corner of the net.
Kenneth Vargas and Maeda traded shots before the latter doubled Celtic’s lead. Hatate drilled the ball across the face of goal and his Japan team-mate had the simple job of nudging it home.
The second half was just 12 seconds old when Alex Cochrane was penalised for a clumsy challenge on Kyogo. However, Hatate cracked the spot-kick against the base of the post.
The miss did nothing to affect Hatate’s confidence as he sent a sumptuous flick into the path of the galloping Palma and seconds later Kyogo was lashing the ball high into the net from six yards to stretch his scoring run against Hearts to eight games.
There were already a lot of empty seats in the home stands when Shankland curled in a lovely finish from the edge of the penalty area, profiting from a bad Maeda touch.
The hosts had 25 minutes to salvage something and the introduction of Liam Boyce added a bit of bite to their attack, but Celtic were next to strike as Iwata crashed in his first goal for the club.
The visitors were first to the ball each time in a series of near things before the substitute thundered a shot off the underside of the crossbar.
Celtic remain unbeaten in the league, winning each of their opening five away matches, something no team has done since 2017-18 during Rodgers’ first spell in charge.
