Trivia

  • KO: 20:00 UK Time, TNT sports tv
  • Champions League/European Cup Group E: Matchday 3
  • Celtic take first point in this group stage but still bottom.
  • Hatate off early due to hamstring injury.
  • Ex-Celt Samaras back at Celtic Park to attend the match, and very welcome too.
  • Managers Diego Simeone and Brendan Rodgers had an awkward exchange after the final whistle with the Argentine seeming uninterested in a handshake. The antics of the Madrid team was a bit of a disgrace, with simulation etc and some poor challenges.
  • Pre match: Brendan Rodgers said Celtic up against a “world class” Atletico Madrid, but insisted that’s the levels he wants to see his team challenge as Celtic attempting to end a 10-year home win Champions League drought.
  • Big Celtic displays of Palestinian flags across the stadium, countering the requests/demands to not do so by the board. The Israel/Gaza war has stepped up, and all discussions on issues are for outwith of this site. The pictures of the displays go viral. See articles below, and pics.
“Celtic have urged their supporters not to bring flags and banners relating to the conflict between Israel and Palestine to their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.”
  • Report: Celtic unlikely to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, with the 24-year-old Ukraine international, who is out of contract next summer, preferring a move to EPL.
  • Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has admitted he’d like ex-Celt Ryan Christie to extend his contract, with Celtic reportedly interested to bring him back.
  • Talks ongoing with Joe Hart about his future, with his contract up at end of season.
  • £30m in merchandise sales last year – a club record – and extraordinary numbers from season ticket and UCL ticket sales.
  • Up to eight players could leave Celtic during the January transfer window after manager Brendan Rodgers suggested Celtic have too many senior players on their books.

Summary

Brendan Rodgers: “I thought we were outstanding. To play to that level against an outstanding side, we were brilliant. We showed immense courage to take the ball and pass it at speed, to try to open up a very difficult team. It was everything you wanted to see [from Celtic]. “But [later] I could see our back line getting stretched so we made changes, we went to 3-5-2. We were starting to fatigue from the tempo of the game, it’s not what we’re used to. We got a very good point from this and we take that into our next game. This is a tough group for us – I believe we should have more points – but I thought our performance was outstanding.”

Joebloggscity: It’s fair to argue that so far this is the best performance by a Rodgers Celtic side this season, and really showed that on our day Celtic can compete with the top level sides and deserved a place at the top table. The group table doesn’t reflect fairly Celtic’s form so far in this competition, but need to build on it and work through it. A lot of credit to Rodgers.

The HappyHoopster of KDS: What a game, players gave their all
Well on top 1st half but totally boxed in for the 2nd
Phillips coming on was a great shout from the manager
Can kind of see why he never brought Oh on and opted for Forrest ( who done well again )
Kyogo and Maeda were totally isolated whenever we did manage over half way line
Draw was a fair result overall I would say

BiscuitTin of KDS:
That was some game – first half was tremendous

Could see us running out of gas as second half wore on but overall – a great performance where we showed we are not far from competing better at this level

MOR Scales were the stand outs

Out first goal was a thing of beauty

Would have loved a winner but they’re a very decent team – passing was immense at times so – great game & decent result

If we back BR properly – he will take us forward in Europe – next years mega bucks one is looming

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland That was some game, Celtic showed in the first half that they’re very competitive at this level, & showed spirt, determination & heart in the second when Atleti turned the screw, the home win remains elusive but this result should prove to themselves they can compete with anyone.

E-Tims @ETimsNet · 56m 1 point in 3 games & yet so many positives to build on. 1st half @ Feyenoord v good. 2 reds chgd match. Thought we deserved to beat Lazio. Fine margins at this level. Brilliant 1st half v At Mad tonight. Performance levels top notch. So much to build on with Brendan

celticbynumbers @Alan_Morrison67 · 1h Against that standard of opposition all you can ask for is Performance Performance Performance And that was a terrific team performance. Being picky need to pace the pressing efforts better

Chris Sutton @chris_sutton73Tremendous first half from Celtic but ran out of steam. Not enough belief and bravery in possession in the second half. Brendan not throwing Oh on tells it’s own story. Maeda not clean enough with his link up as a central striker. Atletico really excellent at shithousery…

Chris Sutton @chris_sutton73 · 1h Tremendous first half from Celtic but ran out of steam. Not enough belief and bravery in possession in the second half. Tom English @TEnglishSport Curious why Greg Taylor seems to be the only Celtic player criticised for the Morata goal. Bernardo doesn’t get a strong enough tackle on Llorente. Taylor could be more decisive but he has Llorente and Molina, a World Cup winner, to contend with. Two against one. He goes in to tackle Llorente and the liklihood is that Llorente lays it off to Molina and he crosses. CCV has lost Morata. Alistair Johnson is jogging back and not helping CCV. Multiple errors but Taylor is the one getting the stick on here. Not sure that’s entirely fair on him

Boyle @Boyle_67 Tonight was the best European atmosphere at Celtic Park I can remember for a long time, it felt like it was back to the atmosphere of genuine hope and belief of getting a result, the players could feed off it. Absolutely gutted we didn’t win the game.

Celtic come of age in Atletico Madrid draw – Brendan Rodgers’ tactical nous, Kyogo-O’Riley axis, electricity in stands
It wasn’t the Champions League win so craved by Celtic but, by Jiminy, there was a sense of Brendan Rodgers emerging team coming of age in their epic, engrossing 2-2 tussle with Atletico Madrid.

At times, the Scottish champions produced football with an elan that seemed to shock their Spanish visitors to establish a 2-1 half-time lead. This alone is significant, with 12 games and six years in the arena having come and gone without them netting more than once. The spanking strikes from Kyogo Furuhashi and Luis Palma – either side of a penalty counter from Antoine Griezmann – the equal of any they have produced in the competition over those times.

Understandably, they tired in the second period. But they did not wilt, as it seemed would be the inevitable course, when Diego Simeone’s men equalised with Alvaro Morata heading in an exquisite right-wing cross in the 53rd minute from interval-substitute Marcos Llorente. But Rodgers’ tactical nous – he withdrew Palma and brought on Nat Phillips in the 62nd minute to switch to a 3-5-2 – brought a solidity that ensured their would be no late heartache as befell them with the 95th minute clincher Lazio plundered in Glasgow’s east end three weeks ago. They were also helped by an 80th minute red card shown to Rodrigo De Paul that saw Atletico finish with 10 men.

Much is likely to be made of the Celtic support – not merely the Green Brigade – defying the club’s wishes and flying Palestinian flags before kick-off. It has to be said, though, that the show of solidarity seemed to create an electricity that Rodgers’ team plugged into from the off.

It is rare to see Celtic able to marry measure and mastery to maul an elite continental opponent. But only four minutes in, the Kyogo Furuhashi-Matt O’Riley axis sliced Atletico apart – the pair combining in a dazzling fashion redolent of the Japanese striker’s earlier opener in the agonising 2-1 loss to Lazio three weeks ago. As then – after twice exchanging passes – Furahashi’s aim was truer than William Tell as he steered into the corner a sumptuous cushioned pass from his midfield confrere that sent him in behind on the right channel.

Celtic’s perfect start became imperfect when shortly afterwards Reo Hatate was forced off in tears with what seemed like a recurrence of the hamstring injury from which he had only recently recovered. His replacement, Paolo Bernardo, didn’t cause the home side to be in any way upset from producing football of poise at a breathless pace. Undeniably beyond a level of even their much-vaunted first-half showing against Real Madrid last year. The course of a Champions League night never runs smooth for Celtic, though. And when Greg Taylor caught the heel of Nahuel Molina in the box to lead to a 28th minute penalty that Joe Hart pushed on to the post from taker Griezmann, only for the French forward to knock in the rebound, the fear was another hard-luck story was in the post. But this growing Celtic side had the ability to come again, with Palma lazering in from an angle on the right-hand edge of the box after Daizen Maeda had flipped over a cross from the opposite wing that eluded all but the Honduran. And the ability to not allow themselves to be put away as their herculean efforts in this thunderous contest started to take their toll.

Celtic fans told not to display flags relating to Israel-Palestine conflict at Champions League clash
Celtic have urged their supporters not to bring flags and banners relating to the conflict between Israel and Palestine to Wednesday evening’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtic-fans-told-not-to-display-flags-relating-to-israel-palestine-conflict-at-champions-league-clash-4385199

The club issued the plea on the day of the meeting with the Spaniards after the Green Brigade fans’ group encouraged supporters to “courageously fly the flag for Palestine” amid a conflict that has claimed thousands of lives.

“We have witnessed death, violence and destruction in the Holy Land in recent weeks, with thousands of people – men, women and children – killed, injured and displaced,” read Celtic’s statement.

“We are witnessing a tragedy of horrendous scale. As it continues, everyone at Celtic prays for all who have been affected. We also hope and pray for peace and for humanitarian support to reach those who are in need and in fear. Many of our colleagues, supporters, friends and families have been affected by these events.

“Against this backdrop of conflict and pain, sport can promote peace and demonstrate humanity and empathy for all who continue to suffer.

“For the club’s UEFA Champions League match against Atletico Madrid this evening, Celtic and Atletico Madrid players and coaching staff will wear black armbands, as a show of respect and support for all those affected by the conflict.

“The club is also making a contribution to the International Committee of the Red Cross to support people affected by the humanitarian crisis in the region.

“The club recognises that our supporters hold personal views to which everyone is entitled. As a club open to all, we all belong at Celtic Park.

“Celtic Park is where we come to support our football club. Recognising this, respecting the gravity of the tragedy unfolding and its impact on communities in Scotland and across the world, and in line with other clubs, leagues and associations, we ask that banners, flags and symbols relating to the conflict and those countries involved in it are not displayed at Celtic Park at this time.

“As we approach this crucial fixture, as ever, we sincerely thank our fans for their positive support of the players and the team. We thank you very much for your continued support of Celtic Football Club.”

A section of Celtic’s support has long held an affiliation with the Palestinian cause, with the club having previously been sanctioned by UEFA for banners or flags showing support for Palestine.

Large numbers of Hoops fans held up the Palestine flag before Sunday’s match away to Hearts and the Green Brigade is intent on ensuring there is a repeat at the Atletico match, setting it on a collision course with the club’s hierarchy.

“For those unable to obtain a flag, the Green Brigade will distribute thousands of flags outside the stadium,” the group said in a statement released on Tuesday.

“While it would be easier to distribute flags inside, we are prohibited from bringing the flags into the stadium. We respect the right of all fans who wish not to participate in such an action, however equally we ask that the same respect and freedom is afforded to all fans who do.”

Goals from Kyogo Furuhashi and Luis Palma were cancelled out by Antione Griezman and Alvaro Morata as the Scottish champions had to settle for earning their first point in Group E.

Brendan Rodgers side produced a stirring display against the Spanish giants, who finished with 10 men following a late red card for Rodrigo De Paul, but the night will also be remembered for events in the stands after an appeal for supporters not to take any flags and banners relating to the conflict between Israel and Palestine into the stadium was ignored.

A tifo display in the colours of the Palestine flag was evident in the lower half of the standing section well before kick-off and around two dozen sizeable flags were flown in the adjacent section before the teams emerged. Thousands of smaller flags were evident around the ground when the teams came out.

The displays will inevitably lead to UEFA disciplinary action against Celtic, given the European governing body has already fined the club for fans flying Palestine flags on previous occasions.

The club issued a plea to supporters earlier on Wednesday after the Green Brigade – the ultras group currently suspended from getting away tickets by the club in the wake of incidents at Motherwell and Feyenoord – urged fans to “courageously fly the flag for Palestine” amid the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East that has claimed thousands of lives.

The Celtic statement read: “Celtic Park is where we come to support our football club. Recognising this, respecting the gravity of the tragedy unfolding and its impact on communities in Scotland and across the world, and in line with other clubs, leagues and associations, we ask that banners, flags and symbols relating to the conflict and those countries involved in it are not displayed at Celtic Park at this time.”

The club added that players and coaches would wear black armbands as a “show of respect and support for all those affected by the conflict” and the club would make a contribution to the Red Cross to “support people affected by the humanitarian crisis in the region”.

A Celtic fans’ group defied a club appeal and held aloft Palestinian flags before Wednesday’s Champions League match.

The Green Brigade previously said they would hand out flags ahead of the game against Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

Celtic have already banned the group from away games after they displayed the flags at recent matches in the wake of the attacks in Israel and Gaza.

It is expected the Scottish champions will now receive a fine from Uefa.

The Green Brigade, which occupy the north curve of Celtic Park, traditionally organise a tifo – a choreographed display involving a large banner or image – for major games.

But as the teams emerged from the tunnel for the Group E fixture they instead held up the Palestinian flags.

They were also waved in other parts of the stadium ahead of the match, which finished 2-2.

In a message to supporters before the game, Celtic said players and coaching staff from both sides would wear black armbands “as a show of respect and support for all those affected by the conflict”.

But the club said banners, flags and symbols relating to the Israel-Hamas war “should not be displayed at Celtic Park at this time”.

Celtic fans have displayed Palestinian flags at recent Scottish Premiership games against Kilmarnock – hours after Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel – and Hearts.

The Green Brigade previously reiterated its “unshakeable belief” that football supporters have the right to express political beliefs.

A statement released by the group said the sanctions they had faced were “motivated by a desire to quash political expression within the Celtic support”.

The statement continued: “In spite of this, and any further obstruction, we once again encourage fans to courageously fly the flag for Palestine.”

The group said they would distribute “thousands” of flags outside Celtic Park ahead of the game despite being prohibited from bringing them into the stadium.

Israeli winger Liel Abada, who is currently injured, is being supported by the club as the conflict escalates.

In its message to fans, Celtic said the club “hope and pray for peace, and for humanitarian support to reach those who are in need and in fear”.

It added that it “recognises that our supporters hold personal views to which everyone is entitled”.

“As a club open to all, we all belong at Celtic Park. Celtic Park is where we come to support our football club,” the statement said.

“Recognising this, respecting the gravity of the tragedy unfolding and its impact on communities in Scotland and across the world, and in line with other clubs, leagues and associations, we ask that banners, flags and symbols relating to the conflict and those countries involved in it are not displayed at Celtic Park at this time.”

Analysis box by Chris McLaughlin, Sports news correspondent

To many football supporters, their clubs are an extension of their beliefs.

Some fans are happy to follow the football alone, but others want to be associated with an entity where their views on other matters can be shared in solidarity, in the stands, supporters’ buses or in social clubs.

It has been this way since working men first aligned themselves with the colours of their local village, town, or city’s football club. But the globalisation of football, along with the globalisation of the media, has made that concept ever more difficult and sometimes extremely delicate.

Celtic Football Club has always prided itself on being open to all but as an organisation founded in the late 19th Century to help feed the poor, its core ethos has, understandably, been viewed as one aimed towards social justice and equality.

So how do fans, keen to share and promote those beliefs, express them in a world where politics and world events are so polarised and football authorities want nothing to do with any of it?

This is the backdrop to the ongoing dispute between the club and a section of its support who are determined to show support for Palestine. Celtic have already been fined on two separate occasions after some fans displayed Palestinian flags during Champions League matches.

The club has recently distanced itself from banners displayed by a section of its support, following the attacks by Hamas in Israel and both Uefa and Fifa are adamant that politics and football should never mix. In a game where money is king, sponsors don’t want the controversy.

Those who want to use the club to convey their message are adamant they won’t be silenced, though.

As ever, caught in the middle are those who want to leave the world behind for 90 minutes and concentrate solely on the football.
Presentational grey line

Many Celtic fans have long had an affiliation with the Palestinian cause, with supporters displaying the territories’ national flag on a number of occasions.

In 2014, European football’s governing body Uefa fined the club after fans waved Palestinian flags during a match against Iceland’s KR Reykjavik.

Perhaps most controversially, the Green Brigade chose to display the flag once again during their team’s 2016 Champions League qualifier against Israeli side, Hapoel Beer-Sheva – a move which landed the club a £8,600 fine.

Celtic were also fined more than £15,350 by Uefa after fans displayed an offensive anti-monarchy banner during a Champions League match last year.

Uefa said the fine was for showing a “provocative message of an offensive nature”.

Celtic aren’t the only Scottish football club to be punished for fan rule-breaking.

In 2022, Rangers were fined £4,400 by Uefa for actions by supporters during their Europa League group-stage ties.

Hearts were also fined for £10,500 for fans’ offences after objects were thrown onto the pitch during their 2022 Europa Conference League match against Italian side Fiorentina.

Kyogo Furuhashi scores for Celtic against Atletico Madrid
Kyogo Furuhashi’s fourth-minute strike was reward for Celtic’s fast start against Atletico Madrid

Celtic earned their first Champions League point of the season but were denied a long-awaited home group stage victory in a ferocious contest with Atletico Madrid.

Brendan Rodgers’ side led twice at a raucous Celtic Park, first through Kyogo Furuhashi’s fourth-minute opener, then Luis Palma’s angled strike, after Antonie Griezmann converted a penalty at the second attempt.

But Alvaro Morata’s second-half header levelled the contest again to leave Celtic bottom of the group at the halfway stage, five points adrift of Feyenoord and four and three behind Atletico and Lazio respectively.

The draw means the Scottish champions retain a chance of claiming third place and a Europa League spot after Christmas, but progression in this competition is looking increasingly unlikely.

Everything you need to know about Celtic

It had seemed that Celtic’s hopes would be reignited after a terrific first-half display.

The noise before kick-off was off the charts, and it grew even louder when Matt O’Riley superbly combined with Kyogo, who showed great composure to send the home crowd into an early frenzy.

It was no false dawn. Celtic were more than matching their illustrious opponents.

But their good work was undone when Rodrigo De Paul released Nahuel Molina, who was caught by Greg Taylor. Griezmann took the resultant penalty, and although Joe Hart saved, the ball struck a post and fell for Griezmann to finish.

How would Celtic react? Superbly.

Taylor released Daizen Maeda, whose cross evaded everyone in the middle but fell for Luis Palma, who thundered a shot back across in off an upright via a slight deflection off Mario Hermoso. A dream result was very much on.

O’Riley then had a volley beaten away by Jan Oblak as Celtic sensed the possibility of a third in a thrilling opening period.

Atletico emerged a different side after the break, though, and were rewarded when substitute Marcos Llorente swung in a wonderful cross for the, until then, quiet Morata and he arrowed a header home.

Diego Simeone’s side showed their quality from that moment, with a tiring Celtic less of a threat and having to defend with real concentration and discipline for long spells.

Substitute Angel Correa spun superbly in the box to create space and his shot was well saved by Hart.

De Paul offered Celtic hope when he caught O’Riley to earn a second yellow late on but the hosts couldn’t capitalise on that advantage as they pushed forward and had to settle for a point.
Player of the match – Matt O’Riley (Celtic)
Matt O’Riley
Against a team packed with superstars, a number of Celtic’s side stood out. O’Riley was again crucial and his quality unlocked Atletico for the opener. He’s a player operating at a consistently high level and didn’t look out of place throughout.
Improving Celtic don’t look out of place – analysis

Great European nights at Celtic Park have been drifting into distant history. A 10-year wait for a Champions League group stage win in Glasgow has meant a lot of suffering for supporters at the highest level.

The first half of this thrilling encounter was up there with some of the most compelling in some time.

That elusive win was very much on the cards come half-time in what was a display of genuine quality against top opposition. Celtic did so may things well and played at a level that showed they belong here.

There will be disappointment that those levels couldn’t be sustained throughout. However, over the course of the campaign, Rodgers’ side have shown they are far from out of place despite only having one point to show for their efforts.
