- Politics: Soldier blamed for Bloody Sunday, Col Derek Wilford, has died aged 90.
- Post-match: 12 Dec 2023: Celtic Champions League referee, Halil Umut Meler, punched in face by club president after domestic match in Turkey as league suspended. He was knocked to the ground by MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca, who sprinted onto the pitch after his team conceded a 97th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Caykur Rizespor. We don’t condone any of this, a disgraceful act.
Summary
“We’ll definitely have a right go!”
Liam Scales pre match
“In the last 20 minutes we looked like the team that could go on and get the result, but we gave away two poor goals. “This group has gained more experience and shown they can compete in some games – but we need to add quality. That’s the glaring thing that stands out.”
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers
“Improving on small margins is going to be Celtic’s toughest challenge”
Cameron Cater-Vickers after 2-0 Champions League loss to Lazio.
nevybhoy of KDS:
Very disappointing as Celtic were right in the game until the 82nd minute, despite Forrest and Yang having absolutely no effect on the game. Its a result that I expected as Celtic just don’t have the quality to compete for 90 min without tiring or a brain freeze when the pressure is on. I don’t think you can blame Rogers for this one. But for me only CCV, McGregor, O’Riley, Bernardo had decent games. Mikey Johnston was decent for the time he was on the field. The sooner Taylor is gone the better as he is useless. Same for Yang. It all boils down to the Board and the next 5 players we purchase. Time for some real quality and no projects. I think that might have been mentioned somewhere previous.
El Salto of KDS:
I thought we did ok for 80 plus minutes, I also think some of the summaries are a bit harsh
As for the goals, both avoidable yes, but if you’re looking at the second and not thinking Scales was fouled, well I don’t know what is a foul anymore
The ref was a fecking complete homer and his awarding then overruling his own penalty decision was just showing his weakness under pressure of the Lazio mob shouting in his face, it was too fecking late anyway.
We all know we’ve been poor in this competition, I totally agree, but tonight we weren’t all that bad. We badly need a striker for this level though. Feck it, said enough.
Don Vito of KDS:
Lazio had a 90 minute plan.
They toyed with us, drew fouls where they could and got our two full backs booked. They wouldn’t turn down a goal but they knew they were bringing on their joker players later so there was no rush. With our two fullbacks booked they knew the fullbacks would be severely handicapped in many situations.
So, late in the game they bring on two top quality goalscorers to play against our tiring and booked defenders and our tired midfield. And just as their manager had told his lazio players before the match, chances would come up and they would score.
We all know what we did and what players came on.
I predicted we would lose 3-1 and I’m sure lots here did too, maybe even BR in his most private thoughts predicted a similar outcome. The board probably did too.
@StefMcDef Business model is long established. Get into Champions League. Trouser appearance money and gate receipts. Get pumped. Stay midge’s bawhair ahead of shambolic Hun outfit. Everyone in the boardroom, turn round and pat the guy next to you on the back. Rinse and repeat.
Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland Celtic’s away record in the UEFA Champions League era: P39 W2 D4 L33 At what point do the hierarchy take responsibility for that record?
@chris_sutton73 Not a classic. Celtic have defended well but other than the odd bit of good movement from Kyogo really lacking ideas and combinations in the final third. Understandable maybe that Celtic are cautious for many reasons but eventually they need to be braver on the ball higher up.

Celtic crashed out of Europe after a late double by substitute Ciro Immobile gave Lazio a 2-0 Champions League win in Rome.
Brendan Rodgers’ side went into the make-or-break game with one point from four Group E matches but gave as good as they got before the home side’s veteran attacker struck in the 82nd and 85th minute.
To rub salt in the Celtic wounds they were awarded a penalty in added time for a push on substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu but it was overturned when VAR intervened and sent the referee to the pitchside monitor.
Celtic remain bottom of the section and cannot catch Lazio, Atlético Madrid or Feyenoord so have no chance of even qualifying for the Europa League by coming third in the group.
The Hoops travelled to Rome knowing they needed a win to keep hope of progression in Europe alive. Right-back Alistair Johnston, midfielder Paulo Bernardo and veteran winger James Forrest returned against a Lazio side whose coach Maurizio Sarri was under pressure after defeat to bottom side Salernitana at the weekend.
The visitors made a decent fist of the first half without threatening much, although after four minutes Lazio keeper Ivan Provedel had to deal with a drive from striker Kyogo Furuhashi.
However, the best chance of the first half fell to Lazio’s Brazil international Felipe Anderson, who missed the target with a close-range header from a Matteo Guendouzi cross which ought to have tested Hoops keeper Joe Hart.
Furuhashi almost capitalised on Lazio indecision in the penalty area between Provedel and defender Mario Gila before the Italian side got the ball to safety.
Lazio started the second half with increased tempo but in the 49th minute Furuhashi flashed a shot across the far post on a Celtic break before Yang Hyun-jun headed a Forrest delivery back across goal trying to find Furuhashi when he might have tried to get it on target.
Meanwhile, Taty Castellanos twice headed over the bar at the other end and Gustav Isaksen squeezed a shot past the far post after a clever break into the Celtic box.
Immobile and Pedro Rodríguez came on for Anderson and Castellanos with Forrest making way for Mikey Johnston with striker Oh soon coming on for Bernardo to support Furuhashi.
The game began to heat up at both ends. Lazio captain Luis Alberto lofted a shot over the bar with 10 minutes remaining but when Isaken’s drive was deflected into the path of Immobile he gleefully knocked it past Hart.
Minutes later, the Italy international outmuscled Liam Scales, turned inside Cameron Carter-Vickers and slotted in from close range again.
There was more drama in the three added minutes when Celtic were awarded a penalty for a Patric push on Oh but after being directed to his monitor, the Turkish official changed his mind and a chance of a consolation was gone.

Scottish champions out of Europe after defeat in Rome and no progress is being made on continent

Eternal Champions League pain for Celtic. On a high-stakes night in Rome, they ultimately came up short. A 2-0 defeat by Lazio eliminates them from this competition and also the Europa League. Celtic are once again miles off the pace among Europe’s elite.
Brendan Rodgers’ men needed to win at the Stadio Olimpico to maintain any chance of staying in Europe beyond Christmas. At times they looked the better team against an outfit struggling in Serie A but saving their best results for the Champions League. Yet Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri had the ultimate trump card in wily 33-year-old striker Ciro Immobile. The veteran Italian was hoiked off the bench not long into the second half and had the nous and lucidity to net twice, on 82 and 85 minutes, to put Celtic to the sword.
Celtic’s six-year wait for a victory at this level therefore goes on. When drawn against Atletico Madrid, Lazio and Feyenoord in Group E back in the summer, there was genuine optimism that Celtic could make an impact. The pool, on paper, looked easier than last season’s version when they were up against Real Madrid, RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk. Two points were gleaned then. A dead rubber against the Dutch in a fortnight will give them an opportunity to improve upon that.

Celtic’s Matt O’Riley looks to the skies during Lazio’s 2-0 win over the Scottish champions.
That, and prize money, will be the only things on offer. Celtic were not helped here by injuries to some key forward players in Daizen Maeda and Luis Palma. Veteran James Forrest and Yang Hjun-jun deputised out wide and lacked the final moment of quality. Forward Kyogo Furuhashi had two half-chances that weren’t taken and Celtic were denied what looked a fairly decent penalty award in stoppage time when Oh Hyeon-gyu appeared to be pushed by Patric, only for VAR to intervene and overturn the award. It summed up their campaign.
Lazio are not world beaters and looked passive for much of the match. Therefore there will be regrets in the Celtic camp, for sure. The effort and endeavour of Rodgers’ team cannot be questioned but ultimately there is a glaring lack of quality that is required for this level of football. The 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid on matchday three went against the grain. Celtic have not won in the Champions League group stages now for 15 matches, a horrific statistic for a club of such stature.
Rodgers spoke before the start of this group stage about wanting to at least have the Europa League to fall back upon. Ultimately finishing bottom of the pile is a failure. One suspects Celtic could be competitive in the second tier of European football but we will never know now.
Immobile, on for the completely ineffective Taty Castellanos, was the major difference, showing his predatory instinct to react quickly to a deflected Gustav Isaksen shot inside the box and finish astutely high past a sprawling Joe Hart on 82 minutes when the game had become ragged. The same player, three minutes later, finished clinically after more good work from the young Dane. Sarri, under pressure due to Lazio’s poor domestic form, breathed a huge sigh of relief.

The inquest will now begin on another miserable Champions League campaign for Celtic. Their hierarchy will now need to decide whether to dip into reserves of profit to give Rodgers a chance of competing because, at best, they have stagnated at this level. Arrivederci to Europe – now it’s about fending off Rangers domestically to make sure they return next season.

Celtic’s European hopes ended in frustrating fashion after substitute Ciro Immobile’s late double denied them what would have been a creditable draw with Lazio.
Brendan Rodgers’ side needed to win to preserve any hope of progression in the Champions League, or even the consolation of a Europa League spot. And while the Scottish Premiership side were resilient in Rome, they struggled to eke out chances.
The Serie A team endured an exasperating evening themselves but ultimately could rely on the quality of Immobile.
The Italy striker flashed a deflected Gustav Isaksen cross past Joe Hart in the 82nd minute, then capitalised on a Liam Scales misjudgement three minutes later to cut inside Cameron Carter-Vickers and roll in a second.
The win left Lazio sitting pretty at the top of Group E, two points above Atletico Madrid, who faced Feyenoord in Rotterdam later on Tuesday (20:00 GMT).
For Celtic, though, their meeting with the Dutch in Glasgow in two weeks will be their final continental game of this term.

Latest Celtic news, analysis & fan views
After that, they will reflect on a frustrating campaign and one undermined by red cards and lapses of concentration.
Celtic avoided the former in Rome, but the latter were again in evidence, even if there was an admirable doughtiness about much of their play. Too often, promising scenarios floundered on the back of a slack pass or split second of indecision.
Their best moments came early in the second half. Kyogo Furuhashi skidded wide from the apex of the area before Yang Hyun-jun inexplicably headed away from goal in the hope of finding a team-mate when an attempt on target was on.
That was as good as it got, with even a late penalty award – and the chance of a slither of consolation – overturned.
Lazio, out of form and in a bad place domestically, were similarly sloppy for much of the game, but the Serie A side possess a menace in the final third that Celtic lack.
Felipe Anderson, Taty Castellanos, Isaksen and Luis Alberto all spurned fine chances before Immobile removed his jacket and showed them how to do it.
He was the difference and ensures Lazio’s European adventure continues, while Celtic’s draws to a close.

How do Celtic change record? – analysis
He scored at Celtic Park and he scored here when the sides met here in 2019. But neither of those goals were quite as painful as Immobile’s late efforts here.
Lazio weren’t great. Celtic might have got a draw. They might even have found the win that would have extended their European campaign. But instead they were again left to rue a late lapse.
Rodgers’ Champions League record is now played 23, won four with Celtic, who are winless in their last 14 in this competition, losing 11. This season has now gone, but there’s every chance they will be back next term. How do they find a way of being more competitive?
Match stats
Celtic have been knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage for the second successive season. They last reached the knockout rounds in 2012-13 and they’ve now failed to win any of their last 15 matches in the competitiion (D3 L12).
Lazio have won back-to-back Champions League matches for the first time since October 2001. This is also the first time they’ve kept clean sheets in consecutive Champions League games since a run of three between April-September 2000.
This was the 26th game in a row that Celtic have gone without a Champions League clean sheet against sides from the big five European leagues, since a 2-0 win over Villarreal in December 2008.
Ciro Immobile has scored eight goals in his last 10 Champions League matches. He’s the just the second substitute to score twice in a Champions League game for Lazio, after Marcelo Salas against Maribor in September 1999.
Celtic have lost all seven of their away matches against Italian sides in the Champions League, failing to score in any of their last five such encounters.
Lazio had 22 shots in this match, the most they have had in a single Champions League match on record (since Opta began collecting this data in 2003-04).
Celtic’s Joe Hart made his 50th appearance in the Champions League, the first English goalkeeper to hit that milestone. He is yet to keep a clean sheet for Celtic in the competition (11 apps).
What they said
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “In the last 20 minutes we looked like the team that could go on and get the result, but we gave away two poor goals.
“This group has gained more experience and shown they can compete in some games – but we need to add quality. That’s the glaring thing that stands out.”
