Summary
“Our strength is to go and play the game we want to play…”
Prematch Brendan Rodgers insists Celtic won’t change their approach vs Feyenoord as he confirms Cameron Carter-Vickers and Dazien Maeda won’t feature
“To be honest I feel sorry for Celtic because I think they have played really well in the Champions League, together with us,” he said. “There are two things you need if you don’t have the money. You need to go with an idea of how you want to play and you need to have a little bit of luck. The two teams who play at Celtic Park have not had any, any, any luck in the five games they have played.”
Prematch: Feyenoord manager Arne Slot speaks to the media at Celtic Park.
“We could have been sat on nine points just from our three home games,”
Brendan Rodgers post-match
Celtic manger Brendan Rodgers: “The players showed they’ve learned through the process we’ve been in this year, because we’ve seen games over the years where the equaliser comes and then the other team gets the winner.
“I’ve got to tip the hat to the players because the mentality in the game was very good. Some people might have thought this was a nothing game but this meant everything to us. To get the victory, to feel the confidence to be able to compete at this level.
“We’ve shown lots of moments of potential, especially at home – we could have been sat on nine points from our home games.
“I think they thoroughly deserved it, they put so much into the game and it’s always nice to win late on.
“It has been a challenge for us with key players out, but over the course of the six games I’ve seen enough in how we’ve played and fought to know if we can strengthen this squad and add quality in key areas, we can take confidence from this victory, try to qualify again next year and see if we can push on.
“You have to have certain qualities to perform at this level. We have to play a way that makes it difficult for teams, but there’s no doubt you have to have a deeper squad of quality to compete at this level.
“I said to the players this is a competition and a level that can dent your confidence, but when you finish it you’re going to be better players for it.”
jbj712 of KDS: Always good to get a win especially one that helps shut up those who want to constantly remind us just how bad our record is however we should remember that Feyenoord had nothing to play for yet played through and round us at ease especially in the second half.
Once again the referee was definitely not a homer and given the booking of AJ Feyenoord should have been down to 9 the way we were in Rotterdam.
Like others I could discern no real pattern to our play because yet again our midfield was all over the shop and not in a good way.
I don’t think I have ever seen a player cover so much ground and put in so much energy to so little effect as McGregor tonight. The number of times he ran 30 yards out from the centre of midfield to either flank only to fail to make a tackle or interception with the result that Feyenoord could run directly at our back four was astounding.
A better team or a more motivated Feyenoord should have scored at least twice more than the one they did.
Everyone worked hard but the same old glaring weaknesses were apparent yet again.
Taylor, MJ, Bernardo were poor just like McGregor though all put in a shift.
Even O’Riley was quiet for most of the 90 minutes perhaps because Feyenoord had done their homework on us.
Kyogo looked a bit rusty perhaps because they way we play now means he is getting hardly any service which might explain why he didn’t convert a couple of decent openings tonight.
As I say good to get the win but didn’t really see any evidence of a plan starting to take shape.
Highland__Paddy @Highland__paddy · 11h If you had told me when we were singing YNWA after winning the treble against ICT that we would be starting a champions league game with Welsh , Scales and Mikey Johnston in the team ….
Chris Sutton @chris_sutton73 · 10h Well at least the home record rot has stopped even if it was a dead rubber. Worst ever as a player going into a game with just pride to play for and to the player’s credit they did that
John McGinley @jhnmcgnly · 10h That was a lot of fun. Matt O’Riley’s assist was unbelievable. Liam Scales was excellent. Mitchel Frame made a fearless first impression. Celtic banish a winless streak that was being brought up every five minutes. Important for fans to see it and for players to believe in it.
Steve McGrory @SteveMcGrory2 · 21h If you think that, after that awful performance on Sunday and only winning one group point so far, I’m gonna pay good money to make a 340 mile round trip to sit in a freezing cold, flat Celtic Park to watch a dead rubber match, arriving home at 3am, you’d be absolutely right

90th minute header ends decade-long wait for Celtic Park success at Europe’s top table

Celtic’s final European excursion of this season had the sense of a real oddity. A meaningless Champions League game it felt they could not afford to lose.
And by Jiminy did it feel the lives of Brendan Rodgers’ men depended on ending the club’s winless nightmare in the competition in a tousy, at times brutal, and, by its close impossibly dramatic, contest from which they – somehow – clawed out a 2-1 victory.
So much of the story of their home heartaches across their six year, 15-game sequence without a win in the competition has been a story of late-goal drama to sicken them. It was fitting this should be flipped as they claimed a first Celtic Park success in the exalted domain for 10 years – and only a third victory in 32 outings in it – with an added time coup de grace of their own. From the unlikeliest of unlikely sources with Gustaf Lagerbielke, on as a late substitute for Stephen Welsh, almost on the goalline to make brilliant set-up play and a dinked left flank cross from Matt O’Riley count. A mere eight minutes after the familiar pattern seemed to have been set when a 32nd minute Luis Palma penalty was cancelled out as the home side’s escapes from Feyenoord cutting them open ended when Yankuba Minteh was able to lash in from the left after the ball had bobbled in the Celtic box.
Feyenoord didn’t go at it like a team with nothing to play for through being assured of third as Celtic propped up Group E. The home supporters’ anxieties over that likely prospect would not have been eased as they made their their way to the stadium…more dutifully than anything else, it seemed, judging by their general mood at the start. Replaced with unbridled elation by the close, of course.
The team news revealed Nat Phillips’ frailities in the Kilmarnock calamity at the weekend had led to him losing his place to Welsh. A player whose last senior appearance came with a 45-minute outing at Aberdeen in mid-August following an injury sustained by Cameron Carter-Vickers, deputising again for him in similar circumstances.
It seemed inevitable that a central defence in which Welsh partnered Liam Scales would come under pressure from a front-footed opponent, and so it proved. But not before Celtic could make inroads into the Feyenoord backline, Callum McGregor set up by O’Riley for a low drive comfortably saved by Justin Bijlow before Kyogo Furuhashi squandered a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper by failing to lift the ball over him that was earned via a superb defence-splitting pass from Scales.
Arne Slot’s men were able to seize control after Tomoki Iwata was lost to injury in the 17th minute, and Joe Hart – whose displays at this level have been griped over by certain sections of the fanbase – had to pull off a series of excellent blocks to ensure the Celtic goal remained intact. The 36-year-old’s alertness later in the period taking on all the greater significance because by then Rodgers’ side had a lead to protect.
Slot had said pre-match that the two combatants in the east end of Glasgow this week had enjoyed no breaks in their Champions League sortie. His team providing that with argy-bargy in the Feyenoord box at a Celtic corner giving way to Ramiz Zerouki gripping his hand round Scales’ neck, the Irishman crashing to the deck, and Senoit Bastien immediately pointing to the spot for Palma to despatch ruthlessly. Celtic luck extended to Lutsharel Geertuida hitting inside of the post with Hart beaten in the 42nd minute.
As Rodgers was forced to constantly rejig his team in the second period – 17-year-old Mitchel Frame introduced for his debut, but not as the left-back he is but as a left winger – it seemed inconceivable that this night of all nights could end well for Celtic in a competition that never does. But however irrelevant it might be, the relief for Rodgers, his players and their fanbase will be papable that it did.
Brendan Rodgers insists Celtic ‘could have had nine’ Champions League points as he reflects on ‘irony’ of matchwinner
Celtic end long wait for victory in Europe’s elite competition with 2-1 win over Feyenoord

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers reflected on the “irony” of Gustaf Lagerbielke’s added time winner in the 2-1 over Feyenoord at the close of the club’s exasperating Champions League campaign that had begun with the Swede being implicated in a match-losing contribution with his red card in the opening game 2-0 loss to the Rotterdam side.
As the Irishman maintained the importance of “clearing” a “barrier” with a first home victory in the competition for 10 years, could allow them to “look forward” in a bid to return to a revamped, one 36-team Champions League set-up next year, he praised Lagerbielke for stepping up on the back of little involvement in the senior set-up since his £3m move for IF Elfsborg in the summer. The 23-year-old’s introduction as a 75th minute substitute for the equally fringe performer Stephen Welsh ending two-and-a-half months without an appearance in the first team.
“It was a great moment for him because he hasn’t been involved in recent squads, other guys have been in front of him,” the Celtic manager said. “But his attitude in training in the main has been superb. He has always been ready, so to come in after the irony of being sent off over there and getting the winning goal was great. It was a really nice moment for him.”
It was an unexpected denounement after Celtic had found themselves on the rack after conceding an 82nd minute equaliser having taken the lead half an hour in from a Luis Palma penalty, and that was not lost on Rodgers.
“The players showed that they’ve learned throughout the process because we’ve seen games over the years where the equaliser comes and then the other team go on to get the winner,” he said. “So you’ve got to tip the hat to the players because the mentality in the game was very, very good. Some people might say this was a nothing game but it meant everything to us in the process we are in – to get the victory and feel the confidence of being able to compete at this level.
“I think over the course of this competition we’ve shown moments of potential. Especially at home. We could have been sat on nine points just from our three home games. But they thoroughly deserved it tonight. They put everything into the game and it’s always nice to get the win late on.
“I said to the players that [the 15 games without a Champions League win] wasn’t a burden they had to carry. Especially when we have new players in. But, clearly, the longer it goes on then… The thing is that it shows you the challenges of the Champions League. We are very determined over the course of my time here to improve on that record.
“I have been really pleased with lots of aspects of the performance level we have had, especially at home where we have shown against good sides that we can play well at a high level and compete. To get the win tonight draws a line under that home record. It’s the first win since Anderlecht [in 2017] and we hopefully qualify next season and go in fresh. The players can gain confidence from knowing that they can win at this level.”

Luis Palma scored from the penalty spot to give Celtic a half-time lead
Luis Palma dispatched a penalty to give Celtic a half-time lead
Gustaf Lagerbielke’s injury-time header delivered Celtic’s first Champions League home win in 10 years as they concluded their disappointing campaign with a spirited victory over Feyenoord.
The substitute nonchalantly nodded in Matt O’Riley’s stunning cross at the back post to end Celtic’s six-year wait for a win in the competition.
Luis Palma’s first-half penalty after Liam Scales was wrestled by Ramiz Zerrouki in the area had Brendan Rodgers’ side ahead, despite coming under intense pressure from the visitors.
Such pressure looked to be turned into a point when Yankuba Minteh’s thunderous strike with less than 10 minutes to go drew the Dutch level.
But Feyenoord, who drop into the Europa League after Christmas, could not withstand a Celtic onslaught. The Scottish champions were already resigned to bottom spot in Group E but Lagerbielke’s dramatic intervention sparked bedlam in the stands.
Reaction & as it happened
All your Celtic news
Reflecting on the campaign before tonight’s match, Rodgers claimed his side have “showed in moments that we belong at this level”.
There were more promising glimpses early on, with slick play banishing doubts Celtic were not up for this dead rubber. But Feyenoord sharply shifted into shape, producing their own top-drawer moments.
However, it was due to a moment of madness that Celtic led at half-time. Zerrouki had just been warned by referee Benoit Bastien for grappling Scales when he proceeded to do so anyway.
Palma dispatched an ice-cold penalty to inject rare celebrations inside Celtic Park on a Champions League night this season.
Fans were on their feet again, applauding a string of superb saves from Joe Hart. Denying star man Santiago Gimenez with his boot was the pick of the lot, with Callum McGregor blocking the rebound from Quinten Timber.
The relentlessness from the Rotterdam side did not dissipate after the interval. Celtic were forced to soak up their intensity and attack on the counter.
Palma may have been sitting in the dugout rueing his effort that clipped the post, rather than nestling in the bottom corner, as Minteh’s strike sucked the soul out of the stands.
But Lagerbielke, who was a red-card villain on the opening day of the campaign against Feyenoord, left as the hero with his header finally ending Celtic’s catastrophic run in the competition.
Player of the match – Liam Scales

Centre-back Scales won back possession eight times, and won as many duels. Celtic’s backline was under the cosh for large periods, but the Republic of Ireland international stood tall and defended admirably
Records rubbished, but is it only papering over the cracks? – analysis
At long last, the monkey is off the back. The records that have been unwelcomed passengers on Celtic’s Champions League journeys have been rubbished.
A first home win since Ajax were defeated in October 2013. A first competition win since beating Anderlecht in September 2017. That was Rodgers’ first, and previously only, victory as Celtic manager in the top-tier competition. His tally overall is now up to three.
It was far from the best performance he has orchestrated, even in this campaign, but there was a steeliness about Celtic. They didn’t flounder when Feyenoord were on top of them.
What appeared to be a makeshift defence stood strong, and Hart was impressive in goal.
But, ultimately, it is all too little, too late. The Glasgow side finish on four points, doubling last term’s tally, but while the questions will perhaps not be so harsh and heavy tomorrow compared to what they could have been, they will still need to be asked.
Why can’t Celtic carve out victories such as this when it counts? There will be a spring in many supporters’ step as they exit Celtic Park, but is this result just papering over the cracks?
What they said
Celtic manger Brendan Rodgers: “The players showed they’ve learned through the process we’ve been in this year, because we’ve seen games over the years where the equaliser comes and then the other team gets the winner.
“I’ve got to tip the hat to the players because the mentality in the game was very good. Some people might have thought this was a nothing game but this meant everything to us. To get the victory, to feel the confidence to be able to compete at this level.
“I think they thoroughly deserved it, they put so much into the game and it’s always nice to win late on.”
Match stats
Celtic picked up their first win in 16 Champions League matches (D3 L12) since a 3-0 victory at Anderlecht in September 2017, and first in 13 at home (D3 L9) since beating Ajax 2-1 in October 2013.
Feyenoord have lost each of their last eight Champions League away games, while they conceded a 90th-minute winning goal home or away in the competition for only a second time, with the other coming against Newcastle in November 2002.
Celtic scored a 90th-minute winning goal in the Champions League for the fourth time, and first since October 2012 against Spartak Moscow.
Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers enjoyed his third win in 24 Champions League games as a manager (D6 L15), after a 2-1 win over Ludogorets with Liverpool in September 2014 and 3-0 at Anderlecht with Celtic in September 2017.
Feyenoord attempted 19 shots in this match – their most on record (from 2003-04) in a Champions League game.
Feyenoord’s Yankuba Minteh was the second Gambian to score in the Champions League – the first was Ebrima Colley for Young Boys earlier today.
Luis Palma was the sixth player to score a penalty in the Champions League for Celtic (excluding shootouts), after Henrik Larsson (2), Kenny Miller, Kris Commons, James Forrest, and Moussa Dembélé.
Celtic 2-1 Feyenoord: Gustaf Lagerbielke the unlikely hero in win ‘that meant everything’

Rodgers pleased to ‘draw a line’ under home record
Less than two week ago Brendan Rodgers singled out Gustaf Lagerbielke’s personality, adding there are “players ahead of him” in the pecking order for a place in Celtic’s central defence.
That was proved once again against Feyenoord as Stephen Welsh made his first start and just second appearance of the season.
Yet it was Lagerbielke who emerged from the bench to become Celtic’s unlikely hero, the Sweden international showing rich character to head his first goal for the club and earn a long-awaited Champions League victory.
The monkey is off their back. Twelve home group-stage games without a win, over. A 15-match winless streak brought to an end.
The game may have been a dead rubber, but Celtic Park was alive with euphoria as Lagerbielke strode into the spotlight and atoned for his red card in the opening defeat in Rotterdam.
Can it be a turning point for the 23-year-old, who cost over £3m in the summer?
‘Outstanding’ backline the building block
Lagerbielke is not the only expensive new recruit who has found game-time hard to come by. Celtic coughed up over £4m for Maik Nawrocki, who was not even named in the Champions League squad due to injury and has yet to feature since returning to fitness.
Academy graduate Welsh started alongside Liam Scales and the “outstanding” defence soaked up the flood of Feyenoord attack for the majority of the match, said former Scotland forward James McFadden.
A stark contrast to what unfolded in Rotterdam. There were no fumbles or stumbles at the back. Instead of being flummoxed, Celtic frustrated their opponents and had a half-time lead thanks to Luis Palma’s penalty.
Yet barely five minutes after Lagerbielke was summoned from the bench to replacing the tiring Welsh, Yankuba Minteh lashed Feyenoord level. Another story of Champions League heartbreak at Celtic Park beckoned, following late concessions against Lazio and Atletico Madrid.
Step forward Lagerbielke. Prior to the recent game against Hibs, Rodgers said the 22-year-old Swede was not catching his attention. All eyes were on him as he headed home unmarked.
“Could that feeling of importance to the team give Lagerbielke confidence?,” posed McFadden on Sportsound.
“Maybe it’ll give him a lift and make him feel like he’s part of it. At times he hasn’t looked assured, but it might give him confidence, feeling part of the group, and that might make all the difference.”
Rodgers offered praise, saying: “It was a great moment for him because he hasn’t been involved in squads, other guys have been in front of him.
“But his attitude in training in the main has been superb and he has always been ready. The irony of him being sent off and then getting the goal was great, a really nice moment for him.”
‘This meant everything to us’
“When Lagerbielke scored the winning goal, that felt like a goal that qualified them out of the groups,” former Celtic striker Cillian Sheridan said on Sportsound.
An indictment of where Celtic are on the European stage, but he was not wrong. A collective sigh of relief was exhaled around a place that used to be a fortress. Now, it’s about less huffing and puffing and building a feared arena once again.
How is that done, though? Playing attacking, aggressive football would set them on the right tracks.
“It was almost like a hybrid of Brenden Rodgers’ style with a bit of Ange [Postecoglou]’s from last season,” added Sheridan.
“They played with more intensity on the ball, mixed in with running beyond as well.”
There was an intent among the Celtic ranks. Not for one second did they treat this like a dead rubber.
Scenes of Champions League celebrations have been sparse, so they were enjoyed. An overwhelming sense of vindication for their archive of near misses.
“Some people might have thought this was a nothing game but this meant everything to us,” Rodgers said. “To get the victory, to feel the confidence to be able to compete at this level.
“I said to the players this is a competition and a level that can dent your confidence, but when you finish it you’re going to be better players for it.”
