Trivia
- KO:12:00; Sunday; Sky TV; League Match 32; Easter Weekend
- Back after international break. Celtic on 74pts and 51GD top of the league, but Sevco have game in hand and will go top if they win that if all else equal.
- Livingston a few days later threatened to ban flags and banners at their ground after accusing the Green Brigade of unfurling “unapproved” tifo displays on Sunday, claiming two banners appeared contrary to a prior agreement, describing it as “wholly and utterly unacceptable”.
- Livingston expected now to be certainly getting relegated and so this will be hopefully the last league visit there for a long while now, and many opining good riddance to Livingston’s concrete carpet of a pitch, but on the other hand, respect them for at least opening up the ground to away fans for a full crowd and atmosphere.
- Hatate & CCV back after injury spells. Hatate attributed the first goal (albeit officially it was a rebound/deflection into the goals)
- VAR controversy (again!) as Celtic once again lose out on what should have been a penalty awarded but was quickly dismissed to the surprise of all, whilst Sevco got an easy one yesterday.
- Brendan Rodgers given a one match ban with a further one match suspended sentence at an SFA hearing after he had called out referee John Beaton on his VAR performance at Tynecastle earlier this month.
- Celtic offer 15 year old Nigerian striker Mezi Ikemba a trial. Now based in the USA with San Antonio FC, he already stands at 6ft 1. – “I’m thrilled and honored to have received this incredible opportunity from Celtic.”
- Charlotte FC general manager Zoran Krneta says it was pressure from the Israeli media, international team-mates and their head coach – rather than the visible support from Celtic fans for the Palestinian cause – that drove winger Liel Abada to leave for the Major League Soccer club.
- Reports: Celtic have made a concrete offer to goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen, who is out of contract with relegation-threatened Waalwijk this summer, but Eredivise rivals PSV Eindhoven are also interested. Twente Enschede have confirmed that left-back Gijs Smal, will become a free agent at the end of the season, and apparently Celtic interested. Celtic are negotiating with Benfica in the hope of lowering the £6m release clause for Paulo Bernardo.
- Celtic will not sanction release of Yang Hyun-Jun for South Korea’s Olympic qualification bid next month but he could miss start of next season if they reach Paris.
- Ex-Celtic manager Ronny Deila sacked by Club Brugge.
- SFA refs chief Crawford Allan quits after season dogged by VAR controversy and it’s getting worse.
- USA Tour 2024: Celtic set to take on Chelsea at Notre Dame.
- IFAB has approved new tests for another type of offside! A player would only be offside if his ENTIRE body is ahead of the last defender.
- Ex Celt Tony Mowbray taking formal medical leave of absence from his Birmingham managerial job until the start of pre-season 2024/25. He is currently receiving medical treatment.
- Matt O’Riley says he was not upset about Celtic rebuffing an approach from Atletico Madrid in January, adding: “It was just cool that a club like them would want me”.
- Young Rocco Vata who has not signed on a further contract with Celtic, and expected to walk away this summer, scored a hat-trick for Ireland U21s v San Marino. Acc to one paper AC Milan and Serie A rivals Bologna and Atalanta had scouts watching Rocco Vata, but Celtic remain in talks over a new contract and have tabled an extension offer until summer 2027 who could be snapped up for around 400,000 in training compensation at the end of the season.
- Russia: At least 115 people killed and >140 injured when gunmen attacked a packed concert venue on the outskirts of Moscow. RIP
- Don Robertson handed Celtic game just three days after Brendan Rodgers hearing for ‘incompetent’ rant.
- Report: Celtic favourites to sign Blackburn Rovers attacker Sammie Szmodics but face competition for the Republic of Ireland international.
- Yang Hyun-Jun “looks a different player in training now”, says Brendan Rodgers.
Summary
“Embrace it, go and enjoy it and bring your everything,”
Brendan’s pre-match title message to players
JBJ712 of KDS:
Good result and at this time in the season that’s all that really matters.First half we were too slow moving the ball and trying to craft the perfect opportunity whereas on that appalling surface you should just be getting the ball across goal as often and as quickly as you can to make their diddy players make mistakes like the first goal.
Club should be writing to the SFA as we speak to ask what game the VAR was watching.
Coming through players from behind was outlawed in Europe about 20 years ago but not in Scotland apparently though I suspect that if that had been a hun in Kyogo’s place the penalty would have been given along with a red card for the Livi guy.
Leo McGarry of KDS:
Pleasing reault in the end, even if a very frustrating start, along with our usual inability to turn domination into goals.
But, okay considering first game back after a long break, two essential players back after breaks (since forever in Reo’s case) and on that pitch.
Plus, livi defended very well for almost sixty minutes and their keeper was easily their man of match. Can’t emphasise enough, if they played that well every week, at least at the back, I doubt they’d be bottom.
Some good invidual performances alongside a couple of concerns. Matt O’Riley has an average game but still makes one and scores one. He is frustrating, but I think he’ll start next week. I do think Bernardo is showing some positive signs, especially as an impact sub, and those two can combine well together.
Iwata was excellent. Carter Vickers sublime and makes everything look better than it is in defence. Kuehn was good today and is showing huge improvement after being written off by the experts after a few games. I’d like more variety to his runs but it should come.
Despite his strength today, we still didn’t feed Kyogo nearly enough. Maybe his best balls game from Hatate. Reo was superb, especially after such a long break. He could make a major difference next week. I like the way Johnston worked with him, that could be a good combination.
I’d like to have seen more of Yang, especially with Maeda not being too involved.
To win next week, we have to utilise our best goalscorer more. Kyogo needs more balls played to him on the move and a more fluent fast paced attack. Do that and I think we’ll win.

FT Livvy 0 #Celtic 3 Controlled and fully merited win for the Celts. 0-0 at break after clear pen not given, Celtic turned up the pace in the second 45 and ran out convincing winners. Defence at ease with CCV there and Kuhn getting better by the week. Good win on an awful pitch. Good run out for Reo as well after long injury break. CalMac in full training and ready to go next week. CCV strolled through the game. Front three has plenty of pace and energy. Might be the first time we have our full squad to pick from next week. Another bonus from today is that Livvy and their appalling pitch will not be in the top league next season. Another Brucie Bonus is their dreadfully negative manager and his 1980’s Wimbledon tactics will also be gone. Happy Easter.

Club Statement – Celtic Game
Wednesday, 3 April, 2024
There were a number of issues which arose before and during Sunday’s match with Celtic which we, as a club, feel we need to address.
Prior to this fixture, a visiting supporters group called “The Green Brigade”, via the Celtic SLO, requested a Tifo display in all three stands allocated to the Celtic support and to have a banner displayed along the front of the East Stand. The banner was to read “You Play for Us and We’ll Sing for You”.
This request was refused and instead, permission was granted for a Tifo and banner display in the South Stand only.
This matter was discussed at the pre-match meeting, held in the week leading up to the match, where representatives from the club, Celtic FC, Amberstone (our steward company) and a delegate from the SPFL were all present. The agreement for a Tifo and banner display in the South Stand was understood by all in attendance.
On match-day around an hour prior to kick off, a further request for a Tifo display in all three stands was requested by the same visiting supporters group and was again refused.
Against the instruction of the club and police, the banner was allowed into the ground, unchecked, through an emergency gate that was opened due to safety concerns. The banner was then displayed along the front of the East Stand – again, against the agreed procedure.
It was then deemed that this banner and the Tifo display would be allowed to continue on the grounds of public safety for those in the ground and to prevent further disorder that may have delayed the kick off or jeopardised the game going ahead.
At the start of second half a further unapproved banner was then unfurled. The banner itself wasn’t an issue as such however, again, visiting supporters were permitted access trackside to display the banner which is wholly and utterly unacceptable.
Full discussions are ongoing with external partners who were working at the stadium on Sunday to find out why a number of these incidents were allowed to happen and what steps will be taken to ensure there is no repeat in future fixtures. Going forward, it may well be that no banners or flags at all, of any nature, will be permitted in to the ground as an immediate way of preventing this but this will be discussed in full to ensure an outcome which prevents a repeat at future fixtures.
One final point, we were contacted a long time ago from a school group travelling over from America for the Easter weekend and they were looking to take in games on Saturday and Sunday and resultantly, had asked about coming to our game. Given the nature of the visit, we had no reason to believe it may consist of some opposition supporters and at no point was this communicated to us by the company organising the trip.
On arrival, some of the group were in away colours but given the away allocation of tickets was sold out, there was no options available to move the group to the away section. However, after our safety team spoke with the group, and home supporters around them, the group did remove colours and remained in place in the home end and made reference to how welcomed they were made by home supporters in and around where they were seated. We thank the supporters in the areas C1, C2 and C3 for their understanding on this and for making the group feel welcomed despite the initial misunderstanding.
All in all, certainly a disappointing day on all fronts relating to the above issues. We’re well aware that certain elements on the day weren’t acceptable and whilst conversations will be happening with all partners involved, we’ll also be having further discussions internally as to how we can attempt to reduce the number of concerns on these games.
We appreciate the frustrations from our own supporters on these events and absolutely share that sentiment.

Kennedy hails champions’ display at Livingston as they reclaim top spot in title race

Comments
John Kennedy feels cool-headed Celtic are getting back to their attacking best in time for next weekend’s title showdown with Rangers after they returned to the top of the cinch Premiership with a 3-0 away win over Livingston.
The Hoops were frustrated in a goalless first half, but an own goal from Livi’s Jamie Brandon early in the second broke the hosts’ resistance before further goals from Paulo Bernardo and Matt O’Riley helped Brendan Rodgers’ side climb a point above Gers, who have a game in hand.
“It was very good,” said assistant boss Kennedy, carrying out media duties as manager Brendan Rodgers served a one-match touchline ban. “As everyone knows, coming here, especially on a day like today when the sun is out and drying the pitch up, it can be difficult.
Celtic’s Matt O’Riley celebrates after making it 3-0 against Livingston.
Celtic’s Matt O’Riley celebrates after making it 3-0 against Livingston.
“But the boys were very good, very professional. We didn’t give Livingston very much at all in terms of territory or getting into our box, which is always important here. And in our attacking play, we stuck at it. In the first half we could have scored. We got into some great areas and maybe the final ball wasn’t there or things got blocked.
“But we showed that calmness, which is important at this time of year. It’s easy to get dragged into panic mode and think that you need to go chasing a win, but we stayed with our performance, stayed with doing the same things. We were relentless and eventually it breaks for you. That’s what happened and we came out convincing winners.”
Celtic have now scored 20 goals in their last six matches. With key players like Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Reo Hatate all now back in the mix after injury lay-offs, as well as the possibility of captain Callum McGregor returning at Ibrox on Sunday, Kennedy says the Hoops will be heading across Glasgow in confident mood.
“The injuries have hampered us, but the squad are looking good. You see it in training, you sense it in training, the numbers are starting to come back up, the quality’s starting to come back in and the standard starts to raise,” said Kennedy. “Outwith the Hearts game, when we went down to 10 men very early, we’d scored 17 goals in four games and we’ve scored another three today, so in that respect it’s very pleasing. Obviously we want to stay on top of our defensive game and not slacken off and, if we do that, we get performances like that where we dominate games and give nothing away. That’s always the objective, to have that level of performance.”
Livingston remain 10 points adrift at the foot of the table and boss David Martindale was frustrated at the way his team let things slip away after the break. “Probably a game of two halves,” he said. “First half, I thought our discipline, our structure, our application was very good and we limited them to very little. That was the game plan obviously, albeit I would’ve liked to have carried a bit more of a threat than we did. Then you go out second half and to lose the goal we lost was probably the story of the season, if I’m being honest. Some bad decision-making.”

Tony Macaroni Stadium, Livingston
LIVINGSTON… 0
CELTIC… 3
(Brandon 49 og, Bernardo 71, O’Riley 82)
Celtic returned to the top of the Premiership table following a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Stadium on Easter Sunday.
All the goals came in the second-half, though it was a dominant performance throughout the 90 minutes from the Hoops, who had manager, Brendan Rodgers, watching from the stands as he served a one-game suspension.
There was also a welcome return to the starting XI for Reo Hatate, who was making his first appearance for the Hoops since January 2.
And the midfielder didn’t disappoint in the 64 minutes he was on the park, producing an impressive display to help the team record another important league win.
After a scrappy start to the game, so often characteristic of matches at the Tony Macaroni Stadium, Celtic carved out their first opening from a corner in the fifth minute
Matt O’Riley played the ball to the edge of the box for Reo Hatate, who controlled it before firing a shot just wide.
The Japanese midfielder was looking impressive on his return to action, and he was involved in a crisp one-touch move involving several players before Alistair Johnston fired the ball across goal for Kyogo, who couldn’t direct his effort on target.
Celtic were dominating possession without carving out any clear-cut opportunities, though they were denied a penalty in the 36 minute when Kyogo was clearly fouled inside the box.
Referee Don Robertson waved away Celtic’s appeals, while a subsequent VAR check confirmed the initial decision.
The Hoops were pressing forward with increasing frequency, with Hatate at the heart of the play, and he had another chance with six minutes of the half remaining.
This time, it was Daizen Maeda who threaded the ball inside to him, and from 25 yards out he unleashed a shot that went just wide of the goal.
Celtic’s best chance came in the first minute of added time when a long ball over the top from Matt O’Riley found Kyogo.
He cut inside and fired in a left-foot shot from inside the area that was well-saved by Shamal George

It took Celtic just four minutes of the second-half to get the breakthrough, and after a scramble inside the box, Reo Hatate’s blocked shot was knocked over the line and into the net by Livingston player, Jamie Brandon.
The Hoops kept pushing forward in search of a second goal, with both Maeda and Nicolas Kuhn causing problems for the home defence on either flank.
And the German winger came close in the 56th minute when he cut in from the right and unleashed a powerful shot that was tipped over the bar.
From the resultant corner, Liam Scales had a header on target though it didn’t trouble the Livvy keeper.
After an impressive 64 minutes on his return to action, Reo Hatate was replaced by Paulo Bernardo.
And just four minutes later, Kyogo came close to scoring when he met a Kuhn cross first-time, but his effort from six yards out was well-saved by Shamal George.
On 71 minutes, however, Celtic did get the second goal that their efforts deserved, and it was Bernardo who started and finished the move.
Gathering the ball in the inside-left channel, he shrugged off attempts to foul him before playing a one-two with Matt O’Riley and then firing in a low right-foot shot which nestled in the back of the net.
Greg Taylor came close just a couple of minutes later after he was set up by Maeda but his effort from a tight angle on the left was tipped away by the keeper.
And on 82 minutes, the Hoops netted their third goal of the afternoon through Matt O’Riley.
Yang did well on the right flank, skipping inside and nudging the ball on to fellow substitute, Adam Idah.
The Irishman, in turn, rolled the ball into the path of O’Riley, and the Danish internationalist made no mistake for his 12th goal of the season.
Idah then came close with a free-kick from 25 yards out, which went narrowly wide of the right-hand post, before James Forrest, who came on in the last few minutes, but in from the left and fired a shot on target that the keeper pushed away.
Then Forrest set up Daniel Kelly, who had come on for O’Riley, clipping a ball to the back post, but the teenager couldn’t direct his header on target.
In the end, it was an impressive performance and emphatic 3-0 victory for Celtic on what has proved in the past to be a difficult venue. Now all attention will turn to next weekend’s Glasgow derby.

Celtic returned to top spot in the Scottish Premiership after a strong second-half showing overpowered stubborn Livingston.
The breakthrough came from a fortuitous Jamie Brandon own goal and home goalkeeper Shamal George was kept busy before Paulo Bernardo crashed in a splendid strike.
Matt O’Riley added a third late on, his tame shot eluding George.
The defending champions lead Rangers by a point again having played a game more, with the Old Firm rivals ready to meet at Ibrox next Sunday.

Bottom club Livingston remain 10 points adrift of Ross County with seven games to go.
Reo Hatate was making just his fifth league start of the season following a series of injuries and the Japan midfielder curled a strike wide from 20 yards during a drab first half.
Despite having 76% possession, the visitors’ first shot on target only came in stoppage time before the interval, with George at full stretch to push away a sharp effort from Kyogo Furuhashi.
The striker had earlier been the subject of a brief VAR check for a possible penalty when Nicky Devlin appeared to catch his heel with a challenge from behind.
The anxiousness in the three stands containing Celtic fans lifted four minutes into the second half when Hatate found room to test George from close range and the rebound struck Brandon on the chest before trundling over the line.
George then had to look lively to keep out a rising strike from Nicolas Kuhn and made a great diving stop to thwart Kyogo again.
Bernardo replaced the impressive Hatate and wasted no time in making an impression, driving forward to work a one-two with O’Riley before drilling the ball low into the corner of the net from near the edge of the box.
The one-way traffic continued and O’Riley completed the scoring with his 12th goal of the season when George failed to stop a weak shot.

Hatate catches the eye in Celtic canter – analysis
Substitutes Adam Idah, James Forrest and Daniel Kelly all came close to adding to Celtic’s tally in the closing moments as their goal difference moved to one better than that of Rangers.
Serving a suspension in the stand, manager Brendan Rodgers will have seen his team play better but could be satisfied with the way they remained patient to break down opponents who set up to defend en masse.
Cameron Carter-Vickers lasted the full game after his latest injury setback, although the centre-half had very little to do.
Hatate was much more conspicuous during his 63 minutes of action. His touch, composure and energy have been missed and he could be a key player over the run-in.
Livingston have only scored nine goals at home in 15 league games and at no stage threatened to add to that meagre total.
Yes, Tete Yengi put himself about, but the lone centre-forward did not get a sniff of a chance in the penalty box.
Home manager David Martindale set up with four central defenders and five midfielders grafting hard to subdue Celtic, but the plan went up in smoke the moment the unlucky Brandon knocked the ball into his own net.
What they said
Celtic ‘calmest place in Scotland’ ahead of Old Firm derby
Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy: “The pitch was dry and sticky at times but we stayed calm. We eventually broke them down, a very professional performance.
“That’s part of Livingston’s game plan [to slow play]. I think the officials could do more to speed things up. It’s about entertainment. But we got the goals and the win and that’s what matters.
“The fans want us to play in a certain manner. You see when we’re in full flow, the atmosphere they bring and the boost that gives the players.”
Livingston manager David Martindale: “It’s been must-win since matchday one. We need points every game. There’s two scenarios here – we’re going to get relegated or we’ve got a possibility of staying up. Either way, my mindset doesn’t change. I’m still going out to win games.”
