Trivia
- KO: 15:00; Saturday; Celtic TV only; League Match 33.
- Last league game before the split.
- Celtic end the weekend top of the league by 4 pts after Sevco surprisingly lost on Sunday to Ross County (3-2) for the time ever albeit Sevco have a game in hand. They even had another penalty! Celtic top now on 78pts & 54GD, (+5GD to Sevco).
- Very windy day, had huge effect on the gameplay and the flight of the ball, especially in the first half when Celtic played into the wind.
- Celtic had 6 subs on-fielf with Kuhn off for Forrest. 6th sub allowed apparently because St Mirren had a ‘concussion sub’
- Sevco midweek game was postponed (again) due to rain etc so still have a game in hand. They are blaming Dundee (sic!) but Sevco postponed the game a week before obviously as they were to play Celtic at the weekend.
Post-Note: midweek later (18th), Sevco finally played their game in hand v Dundee and to the surprise of everyone, drew nil nil, and so effectively put Celtic in the driving seat with both now on same number of games played and 3pts in front, giving Celtic a buffer for the remainder of the season. - Injuries: Daizen Maeda injury ( hamstring) and Liam Scales misses tomorrow. Callum McGregor trained well today while Luis Palma is available. Maeda possibly out for far more games, and possibly rest of season is the fear!
- Ex Rangers player and now Ibrox poodle pundit Neil McCann lost his appeal at the Upper Tier Tribunal v HMRC – leaving him with a tax bill of £~210k! Schadenfreude… He was an EBT cheat!
- Historical child abuse cases: Celtic poised to pay multimillion-pound damages within months after agreeing to settle legal claims over systematic child abuse at their feeder club.
- Scotland lose automatic Champions League spot.
- Celtic submitted a letter to the SFA seeking answers over the penalty conceded v Sevco last week and have raised concerns over the VAR footage studied by referee John Beaton.
- Sevco manager Philippe Clement defends Sevco cheat Fabio Silva following accusations of simulation, saying the criticism is “not justified” and comments: “In other teams I see players also going down a lot.” Unbelievable!
- Brendan Rodgers has revealed he will play a major role in reshaping Celtic behind the scenes as the manager will have a say in who replaces recruitment duo Mark Lawwell and Joe Dudgeon.
- Report: Celtic considering a move for Werder Bremen GK Michael Zetterer who rejected his clubs first offer of renewing his contract. Celtic are monitoring Coventry City midfielder Callum O’Hare, 25; Celtic could be priced out of a move for Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir amid reports Saudi side Al-Ahli have entered the race.
- Ex-Celt Kieran Tierney has refused to rule out a return to Celtic as he addressed questions over his future, currently on loan to Real Sociedad in Spain.
- Awy On Loan Mikey Johnstone (at WBA) has been named player of the month in the English second tier.
- Middle East: Iran launchs retaliatory attack on Israel, follows heavy escalation of military action in the region.
- Germany: Bayer Leverkusen, with ex-Celt Frimpong, sealed a maiden Bundesliga title in style with a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen.
- A woman died inside Celtic Park prior to the match. Emergency services were called to the stadium after concerns were raised for the welfare of the 54-year-old inside the toilets within the ground but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Summary
“We can only look at ourselves and go into each game and look to produce that level of performance. We want to bring a big level into every remaining game of the campaign.”
Brendan Rodgers (pre-match)
“We know that every single point matters.”
Alistair Johnston
Davie McLaughlin on twitter: “Big Cameron Carter-Vickers bosses everything. He just does.”
EverythingCeltic on Twitter: Said it once & I’ll say it again, Celtic are a completely different side with Reo Hatate in the team.
Etims on twitter: No long in fae game. For those not at the match the blustery conditions made if difficult…as did a ref keen to ensure no flow to game & keeping their physio off pitch after allowing ours on to ensure player didn’t have to go off…never seen anything like it! We weren’t good 1st half but even support at match didn’t grumble too much as appreciated conditions poor. 2nd half a diff story. Reo back and the magic returns. What a miss he’s been this season. The run, the touch and the finish. Genuine class. After that all The flow was then excellent. Reo pulling the strings. Kuhn stretching their defence & AJ putting in some great crosses. Those two have built a good partnership down our right & from that came 2nd goal, What a cross from AJ & Kyogo finished this time after missing similar sitter. Celtic continued to pile on pressure while controlling game. Bundle of subs (mild panic…we’ve made SIX FUCKEN SUBS!) clever ppl pointed out Saints concussion sub…every day is a school day! Big Adam keeps confidence high with finish. All Celtic. CalMac pulling strings last 20 mins or so was great. More like his old self & he’s only going to improve with fitness. There’s more confidence on display & I thought the support were magic today. Nervy 0-0 HT but nope…100% behind the team. All in this together
Tim Waits of KDS:
Job done. Hatate is class. Nice work from AJ for the assists, and CCV kept it together even when paired with both of our two least-favored CBs in succession.
Yang: that miss!
Griff @MildooWolf · 1h Really negative 1st half, much better in the 2nd, CCV is as good as VVD when he was here, Yang, Kuhn and Palma all get into great positions and then haven’t a fkn clue what to do with the ball great 3 points though
A very convincing second half sees Celtic pick apart a stubborn St Mirren defence & in all honesty it could have been more.
Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland: Comfortable win in the end for Celtic, Hatate with a bit of magic eased all the tension, Johnston was excellent in the second half, Kühn and Yang are just so frustrating though. Celtic should be the freshest team in Scotland, they only ever turn up for one half every week.. Kyogo’s scored 16 times this season in 16 different games, he hasn’t managed to score more than once in a match under Brendan Rodgers in 43 games 2021-22: He scored more than once in a match 4 times in 33 games 2022-23: He scored more than once in match 7 times in 50 games Kyogo’s mins per goal each season… 2023-24: goal every 182mins 2022-23: goal every 94mins 2021-22: goal 108mins

Celtic ready to ‘come alive’ in title fight with Rangers but will have to do it without key player

Brendan Rodgers believes Celtic are ready to “come alive” in the closing stages of the season after extending their lead at the top of the table with a 3-0 victory over St Mirren.
The champions were sluggish in the first half but showed greater vibrancy after the turn-around when goals from Reo Hatate, Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah helped them ease to a relatively comfortable win. Celtic’s lead over Rangers now stands at four points – the Ibrox side have two games in hand – allowing them to now turn their attention to their Scottish Cup semi-final against Aberdeen next weekend in a positive frame of mind.
Rodgers doesn’t expect Daizen Maeda to feature again this season due to a hamstring injury but believes the rest of his squad is in good shape as they head into the business end of the campaign. He said: “We are where we want to be. It’s in our hands. I really look forward to this period because it’s where Celtic comes alive. There are five games to go with trophies at stake. There’s a Scottish Cup at stake, so bring it on. I’d rather be the team with points in the bag at the top.
Celtic’s Reo Hatate celebrates with Nicolas Kuhn and Matt O’Riley.
Celtic’s Reo Hatate celebrates with Nicolas Kuhn and Matt O’Riley.
“We’re in a really good position and when you know that everything is with you – and you can decide what your destiny is – that’s what you want. That’s why the result at Ibrox was huge for us, as well as the performance. We had to be tough last weekend, bite down on the gum shield, and see it through in a difficult environment. That bodes well for us. We know we can play our football now, with speed, and we can score goals. We’ve also shown a steeliness which will be important in the run-in.”
Callum McGregor started again from the bench against St Mirren but Rodgers believes having his captain plus Hatate and Cameron Carter-Vickers back from their respective injury lay-offs could prove significant. “You can see that we’ve missed players who are a huge influence for us and now they’re all back,” added Rodgers. “Carter-Vickers today was absolutely brilliant and on a different level. We’ve now got a bench that can really affect the game for us. Look at Adam coming on today. We’ve got players who can come in and make a difference, which is huge.
“I’m not sure we’ll see Daizen again this season, I don’t expect him to feature too much. It’s such a small window now. [Liam] Scales is different. He has soreness in his abductor but hopefully he’ll be okay. Otherwise, we’re strong.”
St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson hoped his side’s impressive first-half performance would stand them in good stead for their post-split fixtures. He said: “We were excellent for 45 minutes and then we can get undone by two excellent goals. Kyogo’s movement for the second goal was fantastic and the delivery as well. And the first goal was a super finish. That’s the difference in levels.
“There were a lot of good performances, it’s hard for me to single out anybody in particular. We’re a good football side, we passed the ball and the pitch was excellent. We now have these last five games to go and chase European football which would be an incredible achievement for this group of boys.”
