Joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki:
One of the craziest semi-finals you’ll ever see in any cup competition, and one of the best Scottish football matches anywhere this season. One of the best Scottish Cup matches ever also.
A crazily exciting match with Aberdeen taking a lead from the start with Celtic fighting back only for Aberdeen to then fight back (with goals at the death of the 90mins and then 120 mins) to take the game to penalties. Celtic made hard work of it and could have scored more but Aberdeen proved they are a better side than their league standing at present (8th). They are a club again in transition but played possibly their best game this season today.
Matches like this are not good for the heart that’s for sure. Can say only from looking back with hindsight, but that was exciting and a great advert for the game in Scotland. Goals, extra time, last minute goals, controversies, no dirty play, penalties, changing fortunes for both sides, great goals and so on.
On the potential Aberdeen penalties (1) first one was handball outside the box (and VAR can’t call back for a free kick) (2) Roberston had given the foul to Celtic before any VAR discussion wrt CCV challenge on the Aberdeen player.
John Hughes @yogijunior3 ·If you had taken a lot of Valium, that game is what you might call eventful For the rest of us it’s just fuckin wild Joe Hart!! Is that the quickest ever transition from zero to hero? Lots to analyse & discuss, but after all is said and done, it’s another win when it counts
E-Tims @ETimsNet · 2h Into our 61st Scottish Cup Final. Thats incredible.I’d imagine any neutral watching that game would have loved it. Goals…drama…GK cramp in pen shoot-out! It had everything. Good attacking. Shite defending. As a Celtic supporter I’m away to have another strong drink! We got there in the end. Scales getting lots of abuse but he always looks for it, tries to bring it out and weight of expectation might not be too fair on the guy.
Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · 3h Today was a stark reminder for Celtic of the work they still have to do this year, said all season most of the fans positivity has came from how poor Rangers had been at times, instead of how well they’ve been playing, this week summed that up, a big reality check for the run in. At the game I said I thought they looked tired and very leggy, every single time Rodgers has said “we’ve had a good week” in his pre game pressers this season, they end up putting on a poor performance. McGregor not being fit had a lot to do with that, though, IMO. The wjngers are tragic, I thought Kühn did alright and at least tried to create, but he’s so predictable, he always comes inside, Yang is a waste of a jersey, Palma has technique & personalty but he lacks speed & game intelligence, a first choice Winger is a must this summer.
General views on Twitter: Scales and Taylor not good enough to be starters, they were just peppering that back post and we couldn’t deal with it. Palma, Kuhn, and Yang are not Celtic class, Forrest stood out a mile when he came on just by being able to get to the byline/go either way.
jbj717 of KDS:
Semi finals are notoriously difficult but today the manager got his team selection wrong.
Starting with McGregor and Scales almost cost us. Should he persist with these two then the league is up for grabs.
Fair play to AJ and Iwata for their penalties under real pressure.
All that matters is the result but there are lessons to be learned for the run in.
Corky Buczek of KDS:
The positives:
We’re in the final
By getting there it puts more pressure on Rangers tomorrow
The penalties were in the main good – Bernardo and Hart excepted
There is always something exhilirating about winning a penalty shoot
The compalcency that has enveloped so many Celtic fans since Wednesday is surely at end end.
Negative:
Wouldn’t give pass marks to any player.
Wretched organisation for most of the game. How Aberdeen players were able to cross at will unchallenged into our box at the end of 90 mins and extra time was farcical.
Failure to do simple things – such as Palma in the 90th minute – doesn’t reflect well on the coaching
We are so brittle when pressure is on
If we keep playing like that we will win nowt.
We are brutal when it comes to crosses from the right aimed at the far post

Scottish Cup: Penalty ‘maniac’ Joe Hart centre of shootout drama as Celtic reach final

Watch Aberdeen v Celtic penalty shootout
After being at the heart of the utterly enthralling events at Hampden, Joe Hart admitted: “I’m a maniac when it comes to penalties.”
That was on show and then some when the former England international strode forward in the shootout to take Celtic’s fifth penalty – one that would have secured his side’s victory against Aberdeen and sent them into the Scottish Cup final.
But he skelped the woodwork. Sudden death it was, and sudden death saved him. Or rather, his own reflexes saved him.
In a quirk, or as the 37-year-old put it, “for once it paying off to be a goalkeeper” Hart went from culprit to hero as he smothered Killian Phillips’ strike from the spot to spark Celtic delirium and Aberdeen devastation.
It’s a save that ensured Hart and his team-mates will come back to the national stadium on 25 May as Celtic search for a record-extending 42nd success in the Scottish Cup in a game that will also pull the curtain down on a glittering career for the goalkeeper.
Should Hearts or Rangers, who meet in the second semi-final on Sunday, take Celtic the distance, will Hart be stepping again?
“100%,” he said. “I’ll always put myself forward.”

‘He’s a very good penalty taker’
‘I need a therapy session after that!’ – Rodgers
While Hart’s trot to the spot raised eyebrows, Brendan Rodgers did not share such shock.
“We were going through it in the last couple of days and he was one of the designated takers, for the fifth one,” said the Celtic manager, who remains unbeaten at Hampden after 10 visits.
“Joe is very upbeat and positive. I always say to players to take risks, and he is a very good penalty taker, we see it in training.
“He has taken it, he has missed it, but he didn’t get down on himself, and ended up being the hero.”
Hart’s “courage and confidence” came up trumps and his experience helped too. And while this trophy-laden career draws to a close, Hart wants to be engulfed by all that’s left of it.
“I’ve just wanted to be a part of everything,” he added. “We are going to go right to the wire potentially in the league and now we have a date here at the end of the season.
“We’ve done nothing yet, but it’s on course.”
MacDonald believed Dons ‘would go on to win it’
‘Ending is a sickener but I’m proud’ – Leven
It was so nearly derailed, though. Aberdeen trail leaders Celtic by 43 points in the Premiership and are languishing ninth, but at times they displayed the hunger and fight Rodgers’ side will need to show as they look to defend both trophies left up for grabs.
Hart was quick to heap praise on Aberdeen and was a master of understatement when saying they “made it tough” for the league leaders.
While the Dons’ wait for success in the competition drags on beyond 34 years, stand-in captain Angus MacDonald could only ruefully reflect on what might have been.
When the defender rose to head the sixth goal of a remarkable game in the last minute of extra time – atoning for his error that had allowed Celtic’s Nicolas Kuhn to make it 1-1 in the first half – he was convinced his side “would go on to win it.”
MacDonald added: “It’s 50-50 when it gets to penalties, isn’t it? The boys did well to get it that far and we had our chances to win it. On another day they would go in.
“We are disappointed for the fans today because they have followed us everywhere this season. We have to take the positives from the game, we can’t let our standards drop now.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers quipped that he and his players will need therapy sessions rather than training in the coming days after they dramatically booked their place in next month’s Scottish Cup final by overcoming Aberdeen at Hampden.
The holders won 6-5 on penalties against the Dons following a 3-3 draw after extra-time. Trailing to an early Bojan Miovski goal, Celtic recovered an led 2-1 going into stoppage time thanks to strikes from Nicolas Kuhn and James Forrest. But Aberdeen levelled through Ester Sokler to force an additional 30 minutes and while Celtic led again through Matt O’Riley, Angus MacDonald equalised with a header. In the penalty shoot-out, goalkeeper Joe Hart turned villain to hero, missing a kick to win it before saving Killian Phillips’ effort to round off a bonkers afternoon at the national stadium.
“What a great spectacle for the neutral,” said Rodgers afterwards. “We’re absolutely delighted to get into another final. Big credit to both sets of players. We had a disappointing start, they scored a good goal, then we got the equaliser and a bit more control. Second half, we found a rhythm, which allowed us to create opportunities.

“We could have closed it out after going ahead. But Aberdeen kept coming back, fair play to them. There were a lot of big hearts out there. Never mind football sessions, we need therapy sessions now! Today was about getting to the final and doing that’s a great boost.
“Jamesie Forrest coming on was brilliant – he got us on the ball, combined well with those around him. He was absolutely brilliant, he changed the game for us. We started to keep the ball in the final third, he gets the goal. He’s just a big-game player. Another big plus was that when we took Callum off, Jamesie gave us another experienced head out there. He’s shown recently what a big part he has to play in the final part of the season.”
Rodgers revealed that goalkeeper Hart had shone in training earlier in the week and was always down to hit one of the penalties. His effort to win it, after Ryan Duncan had hit the post, also hit the woodwork, but he guessed correctly later in the shoot-out to save Phillips’ weak effort.
“We looked at penalties during the week and Joe was always designated to take the fifth,” added Rodgers. ”With their keeper being injured, he tried to get it as wide of him as possible, but it was just a little too wide. But his mentality allows him to not let it bother him and we saw what happened in the end.
“He missed one, but he still ended up the hero. Joe’s worked a lot on the mental side of things for a long time now. He’s a very positive, upbeat character. If he has the confidence and he shows he can take them, you have to let him go. Though maybe a bit more practice before next time …”

Celtic await either Rangers or Hearts in next month’s Scottish Cup final after they overcame Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon at Hampden in one of the competition’s all-time classic semi-finals.
The holders needed to recover from the concession of an early goal and then two late equalisers to prevail 6-5 on penalties following a 3-3 draw after extra time. The victory maintains their manager Brendan Rodgers’ 100 per cent record at Hampden and keeps alive the club’s hopes of a double. Three points clear at the top of the Premiership, they will hope to clinch the title in the remaining five matches of the league season before returning to the national stadium to face either the Gers or the Jambos on Saturday, May 25.
It was not all plain sailing for Celtic, however, who took time to get into their stride and were never able to properly see off a spirited Aberdeen until the last kick of the game. The Dons more than played their part and opened the scoring in the third minute when Bojan Miovski got in behind Cameron Carter-Vickers and slotted home following a neat through-ball from Leighton Clarkson. Looking comfortable, they will lament the manner of Celtic’s leveller on 21 minutes. Defender Angus MacDonald was caught cheaply in possession outside his box by Kyogo Furuhashi and while the Japanese’s shot was blocked by fellow centre-half Stefan Gartenmann, Nicolas Kuhn was on hand to sweep the rebound into an empty net.

Celtic’s Matt O’Riley, Maik Nawrocki, Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Tomoki Iwata and Liam Scales celebrate at full time after beating Aberdeen on penalties.
Aberdeen were so nearly awarded a penalty right on half time when VAR checked a Liam Scales handball. While there was no doubt of foul play, the action took place a smidgen outside of the box and Celtic survived.
Celtic bossed most of the second half but did not make too many inroads past a stoic Aberdeen rearguard until 63 minutes. Rodgers summoned experienced winger James Forrest for the ineffective Yang Hjun-jun just after the hour-mark and just two minutes into his appearance, he found the net, curling past Kelle Roos after he was too easily allowed to cut in from the left.
Aberdeen pressed hard for an equaliser in the last ten minutes and created two excellent chances. Both fell to Canadian replacement Junior Hoilett, who firstly fired into the side-netting when played through by Miovski and then saw an effort blocked on the line by Carter-Vickers from close range after Celtic keeper Joe Hart had spilled a cross. It appeared their luck was out, but right on 90 minutes, Hoilett stood up a fine cross to the back post and fellow sub Ester Sokler peeled off Scales to nod home.
Extra time followed and while the first half of it was relatively even, Celtic poked their noses in front again right on 105 minutes. Alistair Johnston surged on to a Forrest pass and his cutback found Matt O’Riley free in the box. The Dane took a touch to compose himself and then lifted the ball high past Roos.
Matt O’Riley fires the ball high past Kelle Roos to put Celtic 3-2 up against Aberdeen at Hampden.

Adam Idah had a header ruled out for offside on 110 minutes to deny Celtic some much-needed breathing space. There was a moment at panic in their own box moments later when Aberdeen had strong claims for a penalty after Carter-Vickers caught Hoilett, but the incident survived a VAR check, and then Sokler prodded wide from close in as the Dons’ chase for another goal continued. They were not to be denied, though. On 119 minutes, that man Hoilett again swept in a teasing cross and MacDonald, up from the back, headed home and the back post past a static Hart to atone for his earlier error.
That felt like a life-time ago. Referee Don Robertson blew for full-time and a penalty shoot-out ensued – the first in the Scottish Cup semis since Celtic v Rangers in 2016. It was worth the wait.
Idah stepped up first for Celtic and scored, Jamie McGrath likewise for Aberdeen. Luis Palma netted next, followed by MacDonald. Next up, O’Riley. No mistake. Same with Sokler. Three each. Squeaky-bum time. Roos so nearly saved Paulo Bernardo’s effort, but injured himself in the process, delaying young Ryan Duncan’s spot-kick. His strike hit the post. Celtic goalkeeper Hart to win it with the fifth penalty, but he blasted it off the woodwork too. Mayhem. Hoilett still had to score, though, to take us to sudden death. No mistake.
Johnston strolled up and rolled the ball into the corner for Celtic. Another youngster needed to score for Aberdeen in substitute Jack Milne. His shot squirmed under Hart. Five-all. Tomoki Iwata was far more composed, lifting his effort high into the net. Killian Phillips, on loan from Crystal Palace, was less cool-headed. His low strike lacked power. Hart pounced on it, and Celtic booked their return date to Hampden.

Highlights: Aberdeen 3-3 Celtic (Celtic win 6-5 on penalties)
In a time dominated by wind and rain and storm this and storm that, the sun came out at Hampden on Saturday and the men of Aberdeen and Celtic came out to play – and play and play.
This was a Scottish Cup semi-final that gave you palpitations, a thrill-fest, a mad ride on a football rollercoaster that carried on and on. Has there been a better cup game in this country? Possibly, but not many. Wherever this one resides, it unquestionably has a place in the pantheon of greats.
Celtic made it through but only after they fired stake after stake into an Aberdeen team that displayed monumental amounts of resilience. They were behind twice during the game and recovered. They were behind five times in the penalty shootout and kept coming back until those fateful final kicks.
How fitting that a cup tie that contained such character on both sides was won in the end by a man called Hart. The Celtic goalkeeper bounced back from his miss in the shootout to make the save from Killian Phillips that settled it almost three hours after it started.
At 1-0, Aberdeen looked big and strong and a serious danger to Celtic’s bid for a double. Trailing 2-1, they looked done and dusted. Then, from only the Lord knows where, they summoned their bench and found energy and belief and threat. Junior Hoilett had two terrific chances to level it, but couldn’t. Poor Aberdeen. Another narrow loss at Hampden.
But, lo, an equaliser and 2-2. An incredible twist. And then, lo again, a chance for Adam Idah to win it, only to be denied by a desperate, and brilliant, intervention by Jack MacKenzie. Into extra time we went and, quite frankly, if the players needed a breather then so, too, did everyone watching this absorbing craziness.

Where do you begin summarising it? There were pages upon pages of facts that told you that Celtic were winning this semi-final and the heavy possibility existed that they were winning it with ease.
It had been 24 games since the Dons had beaten Celtic. From both teams, only Callum McGregor was in the starting line-up then and now. Andrew Considine scored the winner, which tells you something about how long ago it was.
Since then it’s 57-15 to Celtic. From 1-0 to 6-0 and every nil in between, Celtic have dominated Aberdeen and the expectation here was for more of the same. Sure, it was a 1-1 draw the last they met back in February – but February had been a toil for Celtic with that draw against the Dons and another with Kilmarnock and two late, late wins against Motherwell and Hibs.
Brendan Rodgers’ team were in a much better place now. And Aberdeen? Improving after the pantomime of Neil Warnock’s time, but not really functioning as a threatening force.
Bojan Miovski, the pedigree North Macedonia striker, had one goal in 11 coming into this semi-final. One of Warnock’s extraordinary accomplishments was to turn a terrific goalscorer into a barren space. The striker has been trying to rebuild himself in recent weeks and, as Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales, would probably testify, he’s getting there.
It was Miovski who got Hampden buzzing, Third minute, beautiful ball from Leighton Clarkson in behind Carter-Vickers and a goal. It was his 24th of the season and his fifth against the combined might of the Glasgow Two.
Unless the football scouts of European football have morphed into Mr Magoo, Miovski will depart Pittodrie in the summer. It’ll take a hell of a fee, you suspect. He’s 24, an international player and a class act. And, here, he lit up this semi-final for a spell.
In that opening half, Celtic were not themselves. Pressed to distraction. Inaccurate in their passing. Struggling. They needed the helping hand – or tangled feet – of Angus MacDonald to get them level.
It was a calamity for the captain, ransacked, as he was, by Kyogo and then punished by Nicolas Kuhn. Celtic settled and exerted control. James Forrest, the picture of eternal youth, came off the bench in the 62th minute and came close to scoring in the 63rd, then did score a blink of an eye later.
Forrest fires light up Celtic
James Forrest
James Forrest ‘has been reinvented under Rodgers’
Forrest has been the most extraordinary Celtic player, a guy who came into the team as a teenager in May 2010 and who has never wanted to play for anybody else.
When he scored the kind of goal he’s been scoring for his club for 15 seasons in a row, the urge was to reach for the record books to find out what kind of history the winger is potentially looking at this season, if his strike turned out to be the winner.
It was his 106th for Celtic. Until the Dons came back from near-death, it looked like it had set up a bid for a 23rd trophy, which would put him on a par, in sheer numbers, with Billy McNeill and only a couple behind Bobby Lennox.
Forrest’s first team-mates on that goalscoring debut against Motherwell were Morten Rasmussen and Edson Braafheid, Zheng Zhi and Marc-Antoine Fortune. How many players has he seen come and go at Celtic Park? Think of all the legions of wingers the club has signed in those years, all those supposedly bright young things who arrived to take his place. How many times has it been said that his time was up, that he was too slow, too beaten up by injury?
He’s still there, still contributing. Rodgers’ first spell was huge for Forrest, the player being nurtured and revived by the new manager to the point that Forrest played his very best stuff in those seasons.
Before the manager’s return, Forrest once again looked dispensable and once again he’s been reinvented. Used sparingly, for sure, but still capable of enormous moments. There’d be another in this semi-final soon enough.
Before it came, though, there was mayhem. There was the jaw-dropper that was the Aberdeen equaliser, then the Idah shot and the MacKenzie block that had Hampden in awe of what was going on down there.
Into extra time and the blows kept on being traded. Having scored the equaliser, Ester Sokler should could have made it 3-2. Minutes later, Forrest, having scored from the left was now a creative force on the right.
Forrest to Alistair Johnston to Matt O’Rliey and 3-2. Done, surely? Only minutes to go. No, of course not. The Dons got up off the canvas again, had loud claims for a penalty turned down and carried on with a force that Celtic couldn’t contain.
A villain of before and now the hero – MacDonald nutted in to make it 3-3 and confirm this as one of the greatest Scottish Cup ties of them all. Penalties now. More tremors. More thrills. A goalkeeper with cramp, another goalkeeper given an opportunity to win it – and missing.
And then Hart. ‘Super Joe’ the Celtic fans chanted. It was amazing they had the energy left in their bodies. This was an exhausting, exhilarating classic, nothing less.

Highlights: Aberdeen 3-3 Celtic (Celtic win 6-5 on penalties)
Celtic eventually prevailed on penalties after a six-goal Hampden classic as the holders progressed to their 60th Scottish Cup final and left Aberdeen heartbroken.
In a high-quality shootout Joe Hart had the chance to win it with the fifth penalty for Celtic, after Ryan Duncan’s effort hit the post, but the goalkeeper too struck the woodwork.
However, Hart made amends by saving Killian Phillips’ effort and Celtic will now face either Hearts or Rangers next month as they look to lift the oldest trophy in football for a record-extending 42nd time.
The incredible finale was befitting of an epic tie in which Aberdeen twice scored last-gasp levellers.
Angus MacDonald’s 119th-minute header appeared to have completed a remarkable redemption arc after the stand-in captain’s howler gifted Celtic’s equaliser to Nicolas Kuhn in the first half.
Aberdeen – led by interim manager Peter Leven – had taken a surprise lead after two minutes when Bojan Miovski capitalised on a sleeping defence.
Celtic were much improved in the second half and substitute James Forrest thought his curled finish had booked their spot in the final in normal time, but Ester Sokler’s dramatic header in the 90th minute forced extra time.
Matt O’Riley’s composed rocket restored Celtic’s lead but there was plenty more drama to come before the astonishing tie was finally settled and Brendan Rodgers’ unbeaten Hampden record continued.

The pre-match chat was dictated by how Aberdeen would stop Celtic. Don’t allow the league leaders to control. Don’t allow them to score early. Aberdeen did that, and gave them a taste of their medicine.
Leighton Clarkson, deployed slightly higher in the Aberdeen attack, wiped the Celtic defence out in one delicious attack, and Miovski curled the ball around Hart to shock the green and white hordes in the Hampden sun.
Kyogo stung Kelle Roos’ palms in response before the calamitous equaliser came.
Much was made of captain Graeme Shinnie’s absence, with MacDonald donning the armband in his place. There was no calmness on show when the ball got stuck beneath his feet and Kyogo robbed it.
Stefan Gartenmann slid in to deny the Japan international a shot of his own, but it acted as the perfect lay-off for Kuhn to roll into an unguarded net.
Gartenmann was one brilliant block away from restoring Aberdeen’s lead as Clarkson’s free-kick deceived all and was met by the Dane at the back post, but Hart rushed out to save.
In a stop-start first half, VAR mulled over a Liam Scales handball, but judged the incident to be outside of the box.
There was a feeling Celtic would not be so far off it after the break and, indeed, they looked much more menacing.
Despite only being on the pitch a matter of moments, Forrest sent a powerful warning shot before his precise goal tucked into the bottom corner beneath Roos.
It seemed that goal would prove the difference as Celtic were in cruise control, but Aberdeen’s substitutes prompted a late rally. Junior Hoilett fluffed his lines on a frantic counter-attack before Cameron Carter-Vickers incredibly denied him with a goalline block.
However, the Canada international got his angles all right to tee up Sokler in the 89th minute for just his third goal in red to send the tie into extra time.
O’Riley had been quiet by the high standards he’s set this season, but when presented with a moment to shine, he slammed into the top corner.
Aberdeen once more believed they had a shot at restoring parity when Hoilett hit the deck in the box and referee Don Robertson seemed to point to the spot. After mass confusion, no penalty was awarded as VAR spotted a foul in the build-up on Alistair Johnston.
But Aberdeen were not down and out, yet. MacDonald towered at a crowded back post to head down deep in extra time and force penalties.
It proved to be a stretch to far, though. On-loan Crystal Palace midfielder Phillips was the unfortunate player to miss at the crucial moment in a shootout dominated by Hart’s confidence and ultimate contribution.
Player of the match – Nicolas Kuhn (Celtic)
The winger was here, there and everywhere. His performance was much more than his goal, arguably that was the easiest part of his day. He got stuck in, linked up well with Alistair Johnston and showed desire to drive Celtic forward

Cruel defeat for Aberdeen as Celtic old guard come up trumps – analysis
Wow. What a game. One that will be talked about for decades. An astonishing affair from start to end.
Miovski’s magnificent opener feels as long ago as last season. The North Macedonia forward was much missed late in the day after he hirpled off, as he had Carter-Vickers in a spin.
The Dons were a thorn in Celtic’s side. They did not quit. That’s perhaps one of the most telling takeaways from a storied day. There was a fight and hunger in Leven’s side that has not always been there throughout the campaign. Maybe if it had been, they wouldn’t now only be focusing on their bottom-six games to come.
Rodgers said recently this is the part of the season where Celtic come alive. It took them a while to appear awake but ultimately they were wide-eyed when it mattered.
A gruelling afternoon for a side still in the hunt for the league and cup double, and it was the old guard yet again who turned up trumps.
Hart turned 37 on Friday. He could have scored the decisive penalty at Hampden, instead he made the pivotal save.
The introduction of Forrest was also key. It’s now eight goals and 10 assists now against Aberdeen. Thirteen goals for Celtic at the national stadium. He’s bearing down on matching Billy McNeill’s trophy tally with the club too.
Rodgers said he is still Celtic’s best winger. Moments of magic like he produced here proved he can still deliver on the big stage.
What they said
Aberdeen interim manager Peter Leven: “I thought the boys gave everything. It’s a sickener at the end – penalties are a bit of a lottery – but we went toe-to-toe at times with Celtic.
“We had two academy graduates stepping up taking penalties – I’m proud of them as well. I thought they gave everything, I’ve said to them that’s the benchmark to end the season.”
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “What a game for neutrals watching, but great spirit and credit both teams. I need a therapy session. Aberdeen did fantastic, nothing to lose and came and played really well.
“We weren’t tight enough in our positioning and they were quite bright in midfield and combined well to get through.”
