Trivia

  • KO: 12:30; Saturday; Sky Sports TV; League Match 36 of 38
  • Celtic open up a six points gap in the league title race with a superior goal difference and so effectively seal the title bar some major collapse as only two league games remaining. Both sides to meet again in Scottish Cup final in two weeks time. Celtic on 87pts with +7GD after 36 games.
  • Willie Collum referee surprising choice with the Sevco fans up in arms as he had earlier been castigated unfairly by the Sevco board publicly that shouldn’t be ref for any Sevco games going forward etc. He’s not a great referee, but not biased. He wasn’t great today and let Sevco get away with too much in fouls with cards, and the penalty was given to Celtic via VAR and the Red card was also via VAR which he missed.
  • Sevco’s John Lundstrum scored an own goal and got sent off in the first half. Maeda scored twice but both goals were offside, although he did provide the assist that created the own-goal that gave Celtic the winner.
  • Sevco had been in a bit of meltdown in past week with some social media postings showing vast frustrations being vented by their fans (even physically or at least in person), with the players reacting back. This is on top of Clements clearly feeling the pressure with some curious comments of late.
  • Brendan Rodgers dismissed accusations of showing a lack of respect as “without merit”.  Rodgers said Celtic “can have a bit of fun” in the upcoming game, prompting a spiky response from Ibrox boss Philippe Clement.  But Rodgers said  it was used with “no context whatsoever” and repeated his admiration for “one of the most iconic games in world football”.
  • Adam Montgomery and Joey Dawson both signed new deals with Celtic.
  • Young Celt Daniel Kelly knocked back initial contract offer, but still in talks over new deal. Both parties keen to agree terms.
  • Reports: Celtic, one of a number of clubs linked with QPR defender Jake Clarke-Salter, price £7m. Former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill target for Rapid Bucharest. Adam Idah “very keen” to turn his loan into a permanent move from Norwich City.
  • Ex-Celt Davie Moyes to step down as West Ham manager at end of season (he has on a number of occasions in the past been touted as a prospective Celtic manager).
  • Ex Celt Odsonne Edouard made available for transfer by Crystal Palace
  • Ex Celt Giorgos Giakoumakis says he left Celtic for Atlanta United because Celtic refused to give him a pay rise and the weather!
  • Southampton U21 coach Adam Asghar has emerged as a leading candidate to take charge of the U18s at Celtic.
  • Celtic hired former South American talent spotter Mark Cooper in a revamp of the club’s scouting set-up.
  • Partick Thistle will play Raith Rovers in the SP play-off semi-final after 4-3 aggregate win over Airdrieonians.
  • Snooker: England’s Kyren Wilson claimed his first world title with a nervy 18-14 victory over Jak Jones.
  • Politics: SNP’s John Swinney the new FM; he was the only candidate after FM Humza Yousaf resigned triggering an SNP leadership contest.
  • Ex-Celt Oli Burke set to be sold by Werder Bremen; only 27 but already looking for his 12th club!

Summary

Joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki:
This was a pivotal match, in a season in which the league title lead has turned and turned again, and with Celtic only 3pts ahead with 5GD at the start of the match, really there was little difference between the sides, and the league title was now in the hand of the players on this day. Thankfully Celtic triumphed, but things were thankfully in Celtic’s favour with the home game, no away fans, lead in the league, players all back available from injury, good run of late and so on.

Two goals ruled out for offside (both Maeda), missed penalty, some poor greedy striker decisions (e.g. Idah), some good goalkeeping by Butland admittedly,  and so on… But Celtic still won deserevedly.

A fine day for Celtic, and a key victory this season and possibly for the era.

The ridiculous state of Scottish football commentary. After Rangers John Lundstrum is sent off for kicking Celtic’s Alistair Johnston. Leading the idiocy
Kenny Miller: “It is ruining the game … Alistair Johnston plants his foot in front of John Lundstrum.”
Chris Sutton: “That’s a red card in the 1970s Kenny…. The heat’s getting to Kenny.”

“I understand why it’s a red… I just don’t like the situation we’re put in with VAR”
Kenny Miller the next day making himself looking even more ridiculous, with even arch-Hun Boyd admitting it was a penalty and all laughing at Miller.

Graham Spiers @GrahamSpiers · Journalist “What Kenny Miller appears to be arguing here is that if we didn’t have VAR – if we didn’t have the facility to look again and scrutinise and see the whole, clear picture – then we wouldn’t all know how bad John Lundstram’s tackle was. It’s VAR’s fault.”

“I didn’t know that if you go up to the fans you get a yellow card! Oh well!”

Pie & Bovril  @pieandbov · 7h It’s saying something that Kenny Miller has had a more embarrassing first half than John Lundstrum

Graham Spiers @GrahamSpiers · 7h That is absolutely a red card – all day long. In the modern game, if you think John Lundstram should have stayed on the pitch, you’re living in the 1980s. Studs up, lunging at speed, potential ankle-breaker. No argument.

Dominik Diamond @DominikDiamond Say what you want about Phillipe Clement but when he took over they were seven points behind Celtic. Today he got them within six.

HP: MOTM performance from John Lundstram , outstanding contribution for the 45 minutes that he managed to stay on the park. You’ve no idea how much I’m going to enjoy tonight . Thank you for your service. Another chance against Celtic, not taken Plenty of talk from their manager and players and nothing to back it up Hopefully Clement is still in place at the start of next season , to be replaced by another dud who plays to the galleries. The more things change….. How is Todd Cantwell this evening…stuck in his cage or sitting on the subs bench watching Callum McGregor.

One Star Means More:  @theceltsarehere Kenny Miller has succeeded in making Kris Boyd look like a relatively reasonable pundit!

Lundstram’s moment of madness leaves Ibrox club in Old Firm state as title remains in Celtic’s hands

Never mind a geomagnetic storm. There was nothing interfering with the Parkhead power grid as Celtic all but sealed their third successive Premiership title, although something clearly caused John Lundstram’s reasoning to short-circuit.

Forget the northern lights, by being sent off on the stroke of half time the Rangers midfielder ensured that his side’s title chances went in only one direction – south. The Liverpudlian’s lunacy meant Rangers were left without an earthly in this much-hyped title showdown. Ten men duly lost the league.

It was always going to be a tall order after failures in Dingwall and Dundee in April left Rangers in a catch-up situation at a critical stage of the season. Although this was the knock-out blow, other results hurt Rangers more profoundly. Nevertheless, Philippe Clement has now failed to win any of his first three clashes against Celtic – and Old Firm specialist Brendan Rodgers. A Scottish Cup final against the same opponents now assumes even more critical importance. Another defeat, Clement’s third in four meetings, cannot be borne. The Rangers manager will focus on two non-negotiables over the next fortnight.
Celtic’s players celebrate with fans after the big win over Rangers.
Celtic’s players celebrate with fans after the big win over Rangers.

Don’t lose the first goal, don’t fly into unnecessary challenges. Rangers broke these golden rules – for the 11th time in the last 12 Old Firm derbies in the case of the former – and suffered the consequences. Celtic could even afford to waste a second-half penalty, after Mohamed Diomande clipped Matt O’Riley, scorer of Celtic’s opener. O’Riley’s effort was saved by the immaculate Jack Butland, who was blameless for this defeat. Not so Lundstram.

What was the midfielder thinking? Was it the heat? Was it the tension? Was it the fact that he’s almost certainly headed for the Ibrox exit door and will therefore be spared an inquest that is likely to last all summer? Or was he simply still frazzled by the unfortunate own goal he had inadvertently scored eight minutes earlier to put Celtic 2-0 up and spark more crazy scenes at Parkhead?

It’s often said that just before half time is a poor time to concede. Well, what about losing a man right before the interval in circumstances that were completely avoidable? Rangers had, to their enormous credit, just regained a foothold in a game that had ebbed and flowed and then erupted in five first-half minutes that had supported all the pre-match hype. Three goals flew in, the last of which, a header from Cyriel Dessers, brought Rangers back into the match and back into the championship race. The second half was a delicious prospect. All to play for. Bring it on.

Then came Lundstram’s brainstorm. This was not a last-ditch tackle in an attempt to save a goal nor was it some instinctive swing of an arm in a tussle, both of which scenarios might have merited some mitigation. No, this was a wild, studs up challenge on Alistair Johnston in Celtic’s own half of the field. In other words, completely unnecessary.
The game changed on John Lundstram’s red card for this tackle on Alistair Johnston.
The game changed on John Lundstram’s red card for this tackle on Alistair Johnston.

If one were being kind, we might propose that Lundstram was trying to force the issue. Rangers had just halved the deficit and their title flame was flickering once more. The blood was up. Another goal before half time, and who knows? Lundstram spotted a slightly loose ball from Joe Hart to Johnston and sought to maintain the pressure on the hosts, who were tottering. This is the case for the defence, though it’s notable that not even Clement bothered to submit it afterwards.

Because he knew, like the rest of us, that there was plenty of time left. Simply ensuring that Rangers went in at the interval still 2-1 down was critical. It was paramount that they did so with the full complement of players. Instead, Lundstram was waiting to greet his teammates when they arrived for their cuppa. He might as well have poured salt in the teapot for good measure.

The visitors’ chances unravelled faster than the tifo display – message: “we will be your strength, fear nothing” – unfurled by the Green Brigade before kick-off. The obligatory You’ll Never Walk Alone seemed to have been delayed slightly. The singalong was still going on as Rangers kicked off, lending it maximum effect. One can become blasé about this kind of thing but it was genuinely impressive.

No wonder James Forrest looked so energised. He tore at Rangers, unfortunate opposite man Borna Barisic in particular. He did enough in the first ten minutes to justify his selection in the starting XI. The veteran winger helped set the tone. One Forrest cross was deflected towards his own goalkeeper by John Souttar. Fortunately for him, Butland was alert and performed a brilliant stop.

A Forrest shot flew over shortly afterwards. But Rangers recovered. Fabio Silva twice went close, dragging one shot wide of the far post and sending a header past when it looked easier to score. It was a reminder why his celebration after scoring against Kilmarnock last weekend – involving highlighting his name on the back of his shirt while making a ‘yapping’ gesture with his hand – seemed so ill-advised.

O’Riley and Callum McGregor, meanwhile, were getting back into the old routine, with the pair combining to put Celtic in front. The former took a touch before lashing past Butland. Clement bowed his head. Rangers would have to do it the hard way, again. Losing the first goal is one thing, losing the first two is quite another.

Daizen Maeda scampered to the byline before cutting back. The unfortunate Lundstram made an unfortunate connection with the ball and it flew past Butland into the corner, whereupon Maeda threw himself into the front rows of the Lisbon Lions Stand. Bedlam. But Rangers responded with a well-worked goal. Silva back-heeled for Barisic and the Croatian clipped in a cross. Dujon Sterling nodded back across goal and Dessers headed in.

Everything had to be reassessed minutes later when Lundstram was ordered off. There was a brief stay of execution for the midfielder because he was initially only booked by referee Willie Collum. But it was a red all day long. VAR intervened. Off he went, taking Rangers’ hopes with him.

Northern Irishman hits back at Sutton’s claims as his team stand on brink of title

Brendan Rodgers chose one of his finest hours to respond to an accusation from former Celtic striker Chris Sutton that he was going through the motions in his second spell at Parkhead.

The manager had just watched his team all but seal their third successive title – and the first under him since 2018 – after beating Rangers 2-1 at Parkhead. Celtic are now six points ahead of their rivals at the top and can secure the title with a point against Kilmarnock on Wednesday, although it might already be done and dusted if Rangers slip up against Dundee at Ibrox 24 hours earlier.

Rodgers hailed a “significant win” and acknowledged that Celtic are now “in a really good place”. But he railed against the portrayal of him as a “novice” following his return to Scotland, despite a record of success that had already included successive trebles and a season where they were unbeaten in the league. He also won an FA Cup in England with Leicester City.

He felt justified to return to something Sutton had said in December after Celtic suffered back-to-back league defeats against Kilmarnock and Hearts. The striker-turned pundit, who was working for Sky Sports at Celtic Park on Saturday, had stated that it was a “fair argument to suggest Brendan Rodgers has been going through the motions this season”.

Rodgers has clearly been bristling at this accusation and referenced the after being asked about people questioning his motivation after returning to the club last summer. “I suppose it is part of the game,” said Rodgers. “From a professional perspective of course there will be doubt. From a personal perspective I was surprised in a way that I heard somebody say about ‘Brendan Rodgers going through the motions’ earlier on in the season.

“I get to work between half seven and eight o’clock every day of my life. I leave the training ground between half six and seven o’clock at night. And when I get home I have my dinner and probably flip on the computer and look at more football. If that is going through the motions I want to know what every other manager is doing. Because what is every other manager doing if I am ‘going through the motions’.

“From a personal level I have been treated like a novice since I came back here, like it’s my first job. However, my principal objective is to make sure Celtic win. Part of that is the criticism and I understand that but it’s the mentality of the team that is the most important thing and you can see that mentality from where we were with injuries, how we have progressed, how we have stayed unified, how we stayed together and how we then get to this point where we are nearly crossing the finishing line. And we don’t just want to cross it we want to sprint over it. We have two games to go plus a final and that is our mentality.”

As well as setting up Celtic for another title, the win over Rangers, who had John Lundstram sent off just before half time, was Rodgers’ 150th victory as Celtic manager. “I am loving it,” he said. “Not many people get the chance to come back so I am very privileged to come back. What I did the first time, I want to build on that. I love the football club, I love the life. But there is a lot more or us to achieve here at Celtic. Hopefully there can be another 150 wins. That’s the plan.”

The Rangers midfielder’s red card left Clement and Co with mountain to climb

Philippe Clement knew he could not begin to defend the wild challenge from John Lundstram that left Rangers with a mountain to climb in their title showdown with Celtic.

The chasing Ibrox team had just got back into the game through Cyriel Dessers when Lundstram careered into Celtic full-back Alistair Johnston and was red carded, having initially been shown a yellow card by Willie Collum. The referee was invited to look at the incident again. Down 2-1 and with ten men, Rangers’ already slim chances of gaining a victory and preserving their title hopes were reduced further. Clement all but conceded the title. “I am not naïve,” he said.

He despaired at Lundstram’s actions. “It is, of course, more difficult if you have to play with ten and that is a thing I never want to see – Lunny is the first one that knows that, the group knows,” he said. “I don’t want to see that type of tackle anywhere on the pitch. There it was totally unnecessary.
Rangers’ John Lundstram was sent off for this tackle on Celtic’s Alistair Johnston.
Rangers’ John Lundstram was sent off for this tackle on Celtic’s Alistair Johnston.

“It was one split second of wrong decision-making by a player but I don’t forget what he’s been doing for the team in the last couple of months and all year for Rangers. He’s the first one who knows he has made a mistake. There was totally no reason for it.

“We had also a few good chances to score before that and you’re totally in the game. We were then not out of the game but it was much, much more difficult. The positive side is that the team again showed resilience. They didn’t give up and it would have been easier to give up in an environment without fans, being behind and with ten men. We kept on going.”

He reported that Lundstram was inconsolable in the dressing room. “He didn’t speak,” he said. “Of course he is disappointed. He will feel like that. I also had moments like that in my career where you take a red card and it is not necessary. He is experienced. He knows and I’m sure in the next couple of weeks he still wants to fight for this team. Maybe he wanted to fight a little bit too much and take the team with him.”

Todd Cantwell was surprisingly left out of the team and he was kept on the bench throughout, with Clement explaining that the red card was one factor. “He was fit, yes, but this was not the game to put him on when we are playing with ten,” he said.

Defender John Souttar was replaced at half-time by winger Ross McCausland. Although Rangers knew they had to throw caution to the wind, the manager revealed it was not necessarily a tactical decision. “He (Souttar) had a problem in first half and that’s why I had to take him off at half-time.”

He praised Fabio Silva despite the winger missing two good chances to score in the first half, prior to Celtic opening the scoring. “I think Fabio played a good game,” he said. “He stayed really calm under the circumstances. He is a young player who has learned a lot of lessons over the last couple of months, in a good way. He has reacted well. Now it is about killing off games in moments. You need players who are clinical, who are decisive. He was close, that is an important thing. The next step is to be clinical.”

Rangers break golden Old Firm rules as a king is coronated at Celtic Park – opinion

The home side prevailed 2-1 in what was a championship decider at Parkhead

Don’t lose the first goal, don’t fly into unnecessary challenges. Rangers broke these golden rules and suffered the consequences. The title flag will remain at Parkhead.

Celtic can confirm that Brendan Rodgers has done what he said he would do back in June when they meet Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Wednesday night, although there’s always the chance Rangers might slip up against Dundee at Ibrox 24 hours earlier. This felt like a coronation in any case. Rodgers’ smile shone like the Northern Lights the previous night. He is the title king.

He joined his players on a lap of honour. It is something they do as routine here but this circuit of the pitch was shot through with extra emotion. Goalkeeper Joe Hart had both arms in the air. It felt like a long time since Santa was being booed.
It’s all thumbs-up for Brendan Rodgers as Celtic overcame Rangers.
It’s all thumbs-up for Brendan Rodgers as Celtic overcame Rangers.

While they weren’t gifted this win, it was made a lot easier for Celtic when John Lundstram was sent off just before half time shortly after the midfielder had scored an own goal. This was a catastrophic spell for the Liverpudlian.

The Ibrox side had gone behind in ten of the previous 11 meetings with Celtic and did so again here when Matt O’Riley lashed home after 35 minutes. Lundstram’s own goal three minutes later meant it seemed certain there would be no comeback this time around from Rangers.

The unfortunate deflection past his own goalkeeper was not Lundstram’s most significant impact on the proceedings – impact being the operative word. Lundstram crashed into Alistair Johnston on the stroke of half time while making an entirely unnecessary challenge and was red carded. There was a brief stay of execution because he was initially only booked by referee Willie Collum. But it was a red all day long. VAR intervened. Off he went.

It was especially dismaying for Rangers because they had only just got back into the game though Cyriel Dessers’ header on 39 minutes. At 2-1 with another half left, who knows what might have happened? Still, it’s being incredibly generous to Rangers to think they might have found a way back into the game and into the championship race even with eleven men. Although they recovered well in the first half after Celtic threatened to blow them away, they still looked lacking when it came to really forcing the issue.

Of course, it’s an Old Firm game. Anything might still have happened. O’Riley saw his penalty, after he was clipped by Mohamed Diomande, saved by Butland, who was superb throughout. Celtic Park grew edgier towards the end as the score remained 2-1 and Rangers threw caution to the wind. A desperate Butland made a second foray into the opposition box in recent weeks, having also come up for a corner against Ross County last month, when Rangers’ title hopes started unravelling. That process was completed here. It’s all over.

Celtic not ‘perfect’ but ‘in touching distance’ of title

Celtic are now within “touching distance” of the Scottish Premiership title despite not having a “perfect season”, says manager Brendan Rodgers.

A slew of injuries, fan frustration and a closely run race with Rangers have added bumps to the road in the Northern Irishman’s first season back in Glasgow.

But, after beating their 10-man city rivals 2-1 at Celtic Park to move six points clear with two games to go, Rodgers concedes the “finish line” is now in sight.

“To beat Rangers for the third time this season, I tip my hat to the players for their mentality and their ability to get the job done,” he told BBC Scotland.

“We’re not over the line yet, but we’re in a great place. It hasn’t been a perfect season for us.

“The players have kept believing and progressing. When we’ve had those challenging moments, we stayed very unified and together.

“It’s always the best team that wins after 38 games. We’re not there yet, but the finish line is in touching distance.”

The latest Celtic news and analysis

Celtic lost a seven-point lead earlier in the season but have now re-established a six-point gap.

That means a draw in either of their final two matches against Kilmarnock or St Mirren will clinch the title.

After consecutive defeats by Hearts and Kilmarnock in December, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton suggested Rodgers was “going through the motions”.

And the manager revisited those comments in the wake of his 13th win in 17 Old Firm derbies over his two spells in charge.

“From a personal level, I have been treated like a novice since I’ve come back, like it’s my first job,” he said.

“But it’s the mentality of the team that is most important to me. You can see from where we were, with injuries, how we stayed unified, and how we get to this point where we are nearly crossing the finishing line.

“And we don’t just want to cross it, we want to sprint over it.”
‘The gulf is huge and should get bigger’

Scottish football can be unpredictable, but anything other than Celtic celebrating an 12th title in 13 years seems implausible now.

For many of those triumphs, the trophy has been adorned in green and white ribbons without much of a challenge to speak of.

But after Philippe Clement arrived at Ibrox to clean up a club in disarray following Michael Beale’s departure, a contest was conjured.

Rangers’ slip-ups at Ross County and Dundee left their challenge in question. As they so often have in this spell of dominance, it was Celtic who found the answers.

Despite the nip and tuck of this title tussle, BBC Sportsound pundit Leanne Crichton believes there is a chasm between the Glasgow sides – and it is only growing wider.

“Celtic should have won this league at a canter. When you look at the two teams, they’re miles ahead. The gulf is huge,” the former Scotland international said.

“That gulf should only get bigger because of the financial gain from winning this league and getting into the Champions League.

“Rangers shouldn’t be getting close to Celtic for a number of years now.”

‘Celtic will be champions’

If the Ibrox side are to make up the distance, it appears they will need to have a busy summer.

Scattergun recruitment cost Beale his job, and may have left his successor without the necessary tools to fully unlock a tilt at the title.

Clement will now look to another Old Firm derby in the Scottish Cup final.

Following that, Michael Stewart thinks it’s back the drawing board in the hope of building a squad capable of fulfilling the Belgian’s ambitions.

“The only bit of solace for Rangers is they have a good manager there,” the ex-Scotland midfielder said on Sportsound.

“In terms of the playing squad, they need an overhaul. Celtic’s starting XI is unquestionably better than Rangers’.”
Can Celtic kick on and make European statement?

Clement says he won’t concede the title until it’s “mathematically sure,” but did acknowledge a comeback is now a “long shot”.

And BBC Sport Scotland commentator Liam McLeod anointed Celtic the “undisputed kings” of Scotland in recent times as the full-time whistle at Celtic Park was drowned out by raucous celebrations.

But with a proven manager at the helm and domestic dominance consolidated, can they kick on in Europe?

“Rodgers has got to be given the opportunity to build a team that can go out there and compete,” former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner says.

“They have the finances. He needs three really top-class players. Wil they come to Scotland? Will Celtic be able to afford them?

“Those questions have got to be answered to give them a crack at the Champions League.”

But before Rodgers asks those above him for backing, he says “living rooms, bars and clubs around the world” will revel in their derby victory on Saturday.

The Celtic support have become used to days like these.

Rangers, meanwhile, must use their envy to ensure this year’s close contest doesn’t remain a rarity.

Matt O’Riley helps Celtic see off 10-man Rangers to all but secure Scottish title

A strange thing happened in December 2019. Rangers came to Celtic Park and won a key match, with supporters present. Celtic recovered that season to claim the Premiership title anyway but the ongoing pattern for Rangers in this fixture is an ominous one.

Quite often, much like here, they do not play especially badly; yet they find themselves unable to find a path to victory. Celtic have gone the entire league season unbeaten in Old Firm games. They will be licking their lips at the prospect of a Scottish Cup final against Rangers later this month.

Celtic are now so tantalisingly close to winning their 12th title in 13 seasons. Any reward from Kilmarnock on Wednesday night will justify the decision of Brendan Rodgers to return to Glasgow. Celtic will be champions on Tuesday, should Rangers stumble again against Dundee.

A punchy Rodgers used post-match media duties to settle some scores. “I have been treated like a novice since I came back here,” he said. “Like this is my first job.”

Rodgers said he took exception to someone claiming earlier in the season he was “going through the motions.” He added: “I am at my work between half past seven and eight o’clock every morning. I don’t leave the training ground until half six, seven. I then go home and will flick the laptop on and go through stuff. So if I am going through the motions, what is every other manager doing?”

Rodgers is well within his rights to jab back. He must, however, recognise that much of the noise earlier in this, the most challenging campaign of his managerial career, came from inside Celtic Park. “It is significant,” Rodgers said of derby glory. “But we are not over the line yet.” When they are, he is unlikely to be quiet about it.

Philippe Clement, the Rangers manager, understands the scenario. “My mentality is never to give up as long as something is possible but I am not naive,” said the Belgian. Clement had no complaints with the red card issued to John Lundstram in first-half stoppage time that fatally undermined Rangers’ hopes. Lundstram needlessly lunged in on the Celtic full-back Alistair Johnston.

“I don’t want to see that kind of tackle,” Clement said. “It was totally unnecessary. John is the first one to know he made a mistake.”

Lundstram endured a torrid afternoon. After trickery from Daizen Maeda, the Rangers midfielder bundled the ball into his own net. Celtic were already ahead by that point after Matt O’Riley slammed home from Callum McGregor’s cut-back. In O’Riley and McGregor, Celtic had the two outstanding players on the day. Rangers have no players at the level of this midfield duo.

Before Lundstram’s moment of red mist, Cyriel Dessers had hauled Rangers back into proceedings. The striker headed past Joe Hart from close range after Dujon Sterling met Fábio Silva’s cross. Rangers had earlier shown menace; both Sterling and Silva passed up glorious opportunities to give their team the lead.

O’Riley had the chance to put Celtic 3-1 up from the penalty spot after Mohamed Diomande was adjudged to have fouled him. A lax strike allowed Jack Butland to palm the ball away. Rodgers said he “did not like” the remainder of Celtic’s performance. Had O’Riley claimed his second goal, Rangers would have feared a trouncing.

There followed all-too typical nonsense in the stands. The Rangers captain, James Tavernier, had to delay taking a corner due to a barrage of missiles being flung at him from Celtic’s ultras section. To be fair to the vast majority of the home support, they audibly told that group to wise up as Tavernier made protests towards the referee.

Maeda thought he had scored a third but was beaten by the offside flag. Adam Idah should have prevailed where Maeda could not but looked every bit the Norwich City loanee when fluffing his lines. Butland appeared in the Celtic penalty area for a stoppage-time corner but Rangers really never looked like restoring parity.

The scale of Celtic’s full-time celebrations showed they know this is a case of having one hand and four fingers on the trophy. Rodgers will have the last laugh towards his detractors. And laugh, he most certainly will.

Celtic are on the brink of another Scottish Premiership title after emerging from a stormy derby against 10-man Rangers with a vital victory.

A Matt O’Riley strike and an own goal from John Lundstram, who was also sent off, proved enough for Brendan Rodgers’ side to move six points clear of their rivals with two games left and a better goal difference.

An already lively contest burst into life before the break as three goals and a red card came in 12 frantic minutes.

Firstly O’Riley drilled Celtic in front, before Lundstram diverted Daizen Maeda’s cross into his own net three minutes later to put the leaders in control.

However, Rangers’ initial response was excellent.

Borna Barisic crossed for Dujon Sterling, and his header was flicked home by Cyriel Dessers to revive Rangers’ title hopes.

Rangers news, views & insight

But just as the few in blue at Celtic Park had some renewed purpose, Lundstram flew into a tackle and clattered Alistair Johnston.

After initially only being shown a yellow card, the Rangers midfielder was sent down the tunnel in first-half stoppage time after referee Willie Collum changed his decision following a review.

That made Rangers’ already difficult task severe, and Celtic should then have made life more comfortable for their 60,000 fans, but struggled to bury their visitors.

O’Riley had a tame penalty effort saved by Jack Butland after he was tripped by Mohamed Diomande just nine minutes into the second half, and Maeda had two goals ruled out for offside.

But despite a stack of missed opportunities setting up an extremely nervy finish, Celtic now just need one point from games against Kilmarnock and St Mirren to secure a third straight title.
Player of the match – Callum McGregor (Celtic)

Manic derby sums up season – analysis

This was another utterly compelling derby, and one which summed up the Premiership title race. Celtic are the better team with more quality players, yet were still somehow unconvincing.

This now inevitable league crown has not been won with the flourish of Rodgers’ first era, or the last two under Ange Postecoglou. Celtic won’t care. In fact, it might make it all the sweeter.

Despite their toil in sight of the line in this game, their victory was deserved and yet again their big players stepped up when it counted. That’s four Old Firm games unbeaten this season, with three wins.

McGregor was immense, especially in the first half. Having him fit again, alongside Reo Hatate, O’Riley, and Cameron Carter-Vickers has been the difference in the run-in. Rangers simply don’t have players of that ilk.

That was perhaps summed up by Lundstram’s challenge, which effectively killed their hopes. It was a poor decision from an experienced player and cost his team.

Philippe Clement has been praised for making a fist of this title race since arriving in the autumn. Especially given the injury list he has had to contend with.

The loss at Ross County and draw with Dundee in the space of three days last month was the turning point and, when the dust settles, those will be the moments they reflect on.

The same questions over this squad will linger. Is it a mentality issue? Or are they simply not up to the standard required?

Those are the issues Clement and the club will have to grapple with in the summer.

Before that, they have to take some momentum into the Scottish Cup final against Celtic in a bid to end an up-and-down season with two trophies.

That would be some consolation for finishing as Premiership bridesmaids again.
What they said
Media caption,

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “We made the game really tense at the end when there was no need for it to be.

“We’re not over the line yet, but we’re in a great place. We need to recover and look to finish the job on Wednesday.

“It’s always the best team that wins after 38 games. We’re not there yet, but the finish line is in touching distance.”

Rangers manager Philippe Clement: “John [Lundstram] made a bad decision and he knows [that]. We don’t forget everything he has done for the team.

“Everybody felt there was still a chance. We were not clinical enough. We need to recover fast and get the three points against Dundee.

“I never accept until it’s mathematically sure. It’s a long shot now.”
