Trivia

  • KO: 12:30; Sunday, Sky Sports TV, league game 2
  • Celtic remain top of the league with 2/2 wins (6pts, +6GD, with Aberdeen next on 6pts & +3GD) and no goals yet conceded.
  • Hibernian follow Hearts in slashing Celtic’s away allocation, now just 2,930 seats.
  • McGregor scored an absolute belter from around 20m out. McGregor’s strike today v Hibs means he has now scored for Celtic in 11 consecutive seasons. This puts him joint 15th in Celtic’s all-time records, alongside Bobby Murdoch and Bertie Peacock.
  • Celtic play Hibs again next week in the League Cup second round.
  • Celtic women’s team: league season opener and Flag Day on day before, their first ever league title Flag Day. Big moment for the women’s game at Celtic, and much respect throughout the club for them. They won 9-0 v Dundee Utd, with 7 different scorers.
  • Transfers so far this summer:
  • In: return of loanees like Lawal, Tilio, Haksabonovic; Viljami from Aston Villa (est £1m); Kasper Schmeichel from Anderlecht (free as was out of contract); Bernardo from Benfica (est £3.5m + addons);
  • Out: Idah back to Norwich after loan ended; Bernardo back to Benfica after loan ended; Haksabanovic to Malmö (undisclosed); Rocco Vata to Watford (£250k compensation); Tilio sent back on loan to Melbourne City (Australia) for 2024/25; Oh sold to Genk (£4.5m); Ben Siegrist to Rapid Bucharest (free); James McCarthy contract ended early (free); upto £6-8m bid by Celtic for Idah (!); Dane Murray loan to Championship side Queens Park.
  • Reports: West Ham & Leicester eyeing O’Riley but hesitant to meet asking price, Chelsea also in the race (later report rebuffed this). Brighton in talks with Celtic for O’Riley for some optimistically reported at £25m + addons.  Atalanta sent new bid to Celtic for Matt O’Riley worth €23m, Celtic want £25m (€28m).
  • Reports: Reported target Balikwisha unlikely to leave R.Antwerp this summer due to injury. St Mirren considering a move for  Yuki Kobayashi. Celtic in race to sign Brighton’s Facundo Buonanotte. Celtic likely to miss out after Brentford bid £7m for Burnley centre-back Dara O’Shea. Bosun Lawal off to Stoke? Ex-Celt Ben Doak allowed to go out on loan Liverpool this summer, with Celtic having enquired about him and his fellow Liverpool youth player Bobby Clark.  Enquiry to Crystal Palace regarding Jeffrey Schlupp.
  • James McCarthy no longer a Celtic player with his contract having been terminated. He made 12 league appearances in 3 seasons but failed to make a single appearance since 2022.
  • Callum McGregor announced his retirement from international football. “Playing for @ScotlandNT always meant so much to me and reaching two major tournaments will always be a source of real pride.” Steve Clarke, Scotland manager, was at today’s game and saw McGregor score a belter of a goal from long range.
  • Financials: Celtic said earnings for the year ending on June 30, 2024 will be “significantly higher” than expected. A year ago hit a record £119.9m in revenues & announced £72.3m in the bank. To announce latest financial results in September.
  • This past week, visually impaired fans had the chance to touch the trophies in a special sensory event in the Celtic Park boardroom once again.
  • Ex-Celt Karamoko Dembele expected to complete a £2.5m move to Queens Park Rangers from Brest (France).
  • Politics: Large marches against far-right across the UK, following last week’s disturbances. Large scale planned far-right protests fail to materialise in face of the backlash.
  • Referees: Former EPL referee Jon Moss is the new Scottish FA head of VAR.
  • Olympics: Final day of Paris games.  Scotland’s Josh Kerr took Olympic silver after shock men’s 1500m final outcome. Team GB athlete Rebecca McGowan, the first Scot to compete in taekwondo, says pursuing her Olympic dream restricted opportunities to watch her beloved Celtic; sadly she lost in third place playoff and so missed out on a bronze.

Summary

“Hopefully now he’s retired for Scotland there’s going to be plenty more goals”
Brendan Rodgers on that stunning Callum McGregor strike

“Brilliant! That’s what happens when you retire from Scotland!”
Brendan Rodgers

E-Tims @ETimsNet · FT Hibs 0 #Celtic 2 Total domination for an hour. Some great fitba. Should have been out of sight. Hibs came into it but don’t think Kasper had a save to make. 2 wins out of 2. Top of the table. Fine start to the season. Idah & hopefully at least one more in next week

Stevie Jackson @bobby__peru · 5h Excellent win overall. Only having one striker and not being able to take him off when he gets a knock is poor though. We need to sign Idah (quickly) and another striker as there doesn’t seem to be a youth player ready to dep up

fatboab of KDS:All a bit perfunctory in the second half after a very bright and energetic first half. We should have been well out of sight before BR decided to show the Board what they’ve left him with.
To be in 2024 , in a notoriously difficult away League game, and end the match with Ralston, Scales , Taylor, Yang, Holm and Mikey feckin Johnstone all playing a part should embarrass the life out of Michael Nicholson and his pals.
Still, a very good start to the League campaign and a couple of clean sheets to build on.

Chris Sutton @chris_sutton73 · 5h Phenomenal first half from Celtic. McGregor’s goal was sensational 👏👏. Hibs slightly better second half but as per patience is required with the new manager David Gray. Another centre forward is required immediately for Celtic mind they can’t keep risking with just Kyogo

@DaveyTheTroll ·  Forced to bring on Mikey Johnston because of lack of squad depth: Misses the target, gets concussed and subbed straight aff again. @CelticFC we are so fuckin back

Callum McGregor lights up easy win for champions as Hibs’ problems persist

Same old Celtic, same old Hibs? Easter Road fans will fear so. No one at the club was anticipating another long, hard season and their much-changed team will take time to gel. But it’s been a dispiriting start and the unpalatable question for their fans at this stage is might they be poorer than they were in the previous campaign? Perish the thought.

Not only are Hibs seeking to secure Luke McCowan from Dundee, but they will be desperate to take their first points of the season from them later this month. Whether the Dens Park skipper will be in their ranks remains to be seen although this spelled out why they need him in larger letters than those on the billboard posters plastered around town promoting must-see fringe shows.

Five-star Celtic won at a canter. As well as scoring twice through Nicolas Kuhn and a wonder strike from Callum McGregor, they hit the woodwork twice. Kasper Schmeichel was in goal for the visitors but you might never have known. There was little need to process this information since he was so rarely involved. He could have taken the afternoon off to take in some shows.

Hibs provided mild resistance at the end but by then it was far too late. Doing so after 20 minutes, by which time they were two down going on four, would have been too late. A triumph of sorts for Hibs was managing to prevent Celtic adding to their total although the hosts had a bar and post to thank for that.

Defender Warren O’Hara turned the ball against his own bar from an Alistair Johnston cross in a period when Hibs were at risk of almost complete collapse. A deflected shot from McGregor – who was being urged to shoot by the away fans whenever he got within 30 yards of the opposition goal – bashed back off the post in the second half.

The crossbar came to Celtic’s aid too when lively substitute Kieron Bowie outmuscled Cameron Carter-Vickers – yes you read that right – before managing to shoot from a seemingly impossible angle. There is hope for Hibs and he’s one of the reasons. As are his fellow new signings, two of whom – Junior Hoilett and Nicky Cadden – didn’t feature here. Both will need time to get up to speed.

Hibs are still to score in this league campaign, Celtic are still to concede. Things threatened to get ugly in the bright sunshine for Hibs around the midway point of the opening half. Celtic had taken only three minutes to open the scoring after Nicolas Kuhn played in Kyogo Furuhashi with a cute ball over the top and although Josef Bursik pushed the ball to the side when the Japanese striker got his shot away, it was still in the danger area. James Forrest did well to cut the ball back across goal and Kuhn, who had continued his run, converted at the far post.

Celtic should have made it two after 17 minutes following a slack backpass from Josh Campbell, who made the mistake of not even looking where he was putting the ball. Kyogo pounced but pushed it wide of Bursik’s far post. Hibs fans were already fearing the worst. And rightly so. Two minutes later it was 0-2.

McGregor should announce his retirement from international football every week if this is what happens. He was immense, but then he invariably is. He doesn’t always hit one in from 35 yards, mark you. What a goal this was to denote a new chapter in his career after resolving to focus only on club football.

Good goal though it was, Hibs had coughed up the chance – if it could be described as a chance – with a succession of missteps. An overhit passback from Marvin Ekpiteta had Bursik scrambling and the ‘keeper’s eventual clearance was hurried and poor. Celtic picked up possession, Matt O’Riley transferred the ball to McGregor and the former Scotland player looked up before hitting one of the truest-struck shots you are likely to see this season.

The ball was at a decent height for Bursik, who was possibly unsighted, but it flew past him. Kyogo had his arms raised in celebration before the ball had even hit the net. Might it be too much to hope McGregor might rescind that decision to retire? Scotland have games next month and they could do with some of that. Over to you Steve Clarke, who was watching from the directors’ box. A penny for the Scotland manager’s thoughts.

No one from Hibs will be getting called up, that’s for sure. In this post-Paul Hanlon, Lewis Stevenson era, only two players who are eligible for Scotland lined up at the start for Hibs in contrast to three for Celtic, which rather sums up Clarke’s post-Euro 2024 problems.

One of them, youngster Rudi Molotnikov, found the going hard against Alistair Johnston but kept going before limping off with 15 minutes left, shortly after getting the Hibs fans off their feet with a jinking run that was sadly not matched by the finish. Other than that, it was mostly thin gruel for Hibs. A Lewis Miller cross that was just too far in front of Mykola Kukharevych generated some mild excitement, as did an effort from Martin Boyle that flew over. Otherwise, oh dear Hibs.

Bowie came on for Kukharevych and offered glimpses of promise, particularly when wriggling free from Carter-Vickers and hitting the bar. It will get better for David Gray’s side. It must.

Callum McGregor was imperious in the centre of midfield v Hibs in front of watching Scotland manager Steve Clarke days after retiring from international football

Brendan Rodgers admits he “feels” for Scotland manager Steve Clarke although his look gave his real thoughts away following another Callum McGregor masterclass in Celtic’s 2-0 win over Hibs at Easter Road.

The Celtic midfielder has just announced his retirement from the international team and Clarke was in the ground to watch what he no longer has. It must have been a painful experience.

McGregor was superb in the heart of the Celtic midfield as coasted to victory with two first-half goals. The second of them came via McGregor’s left foot and there won’t be a more truly-hit goal scored this season. The ball flew past Josef Bursik from nearly 30 yards.

“I do feel for Steve because he’s a quality player, of course,” said Rodgers, when asked if he felt sorry for Clarke – although the manager’s delayed response and quizzical look suggested he knew it was a win, win situation for him.

“From a Celtic perspective, for longevity, for him, his career, his recovery…there’s so many games now, it’s a 12-month season,” Rodgers added. “For him to get these little periods of recovery, to recover and rest, will be important for him. He got no winter break this year either.

“He’s such an intense player for me on and off the pitch. Those little windows where you can give him that breather will do him the word of good.”

Rodgers’ gain is Clarke’s loss of course. The Scotland manager thanked McGregor for his efforts last week after the player had announced his decision to step away from international football after 63 caps. Clarke called him a “coach’s dream”. This was all underlined to him at Easter Road with McGregor pulling the strings as Celtic purred along.

“He was brilliant,” said Rodgers. “That’s what happens when you retire from Scotland! Hopefully there are many more goals to come. I’ve managed him in so many games, over the two spells here now. I know his quality. I know his game inside out.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” he added. “He’s scored so many goals for me, especially in the first spell, then a few this spell – 25-30 yards out, it was a wonderful strike.”

McGregor did not just excel in the forward areas. His willingness to track back was also evident. “You have to do that,” said Rodgers. “I think any successful team has the spirit and the energy, that’s what you want your players to be able to do and he typifies that so well. But everyone has to do it, not just Cal.”

Celtic might would been out of sight by half-time if they had taken all their chances – if they weren’t already. Kyogo missed an opportunity he would normally have gobbled up and there were other near misses. Rodgers later revealed that the striker’s shoulder had to be put back in following a collision in the box. He was replaced by Mikey Johnston with 15 minutes left.

“I think it’s just one of those ones that, he had a fall and it knocked it out,” said Rodgers. “The guys put it back in again, but he felt the soreness. I don’t need to risk him.”

Johnston, too, later came off after he was accidentally punched in the head by Bursik. Adam Idah’s return cannot come soon enough. “Hopefully we can strengthen the squad over the coming weeks,” said Rodgers, with Celtic still in negotiations with Norwich City over Idah. “There are other players who can go in and play that position. And that’s what we have to do while we’re waiting for players to come in.”

A stunning strike from Callum McGregor helped Celtic to a comfortable Scottish Premiership win over Hibernian at Easter Road.

Nicolas Kuhn put the champions in front inside three minutes after home goalkeeper Josef Bursik failed to deal with Kyogo’s initial shot.

McGregor – who announced his Scotland retirement earlier this week – then doubled Celtic’s advantage with a wonderful left-footed goal from 25 yards in a superb first-half display.

Brendan Rodgers’ side could have scored more but for the woodwork, but they will be pleased to come away with three points from a venue at which they have struggled on occasion under the Northern Irishman.

The hosts were booed off at half-time having not had a shot, and they improved in the second half, with striker Kieron Bowie denied a debut goal by the crossbar.

Despite that effort, Hibernian were never truly in the contest and have now lost two from two in the league under new manager David Gray.

Celtic don’t need to get out of second gear

Rodgers went with the same side that swept aside Kilmarnock last weekend and their impressive start to the season continued in Leith.

They played some lovely football in the first half, getting bodies into the box and moving the ball at speed.

Kuhn – who looks to have reaped the rewards from a full pre-season – was full of confidence down the right after his close-range finish and Celtic got in behind almost at will in the early stages.

Their pressing was central to their dominance of possession and they carved out chances regularly .

McGregor dominated the headlines this week after his shock international retirement and he delivered the moment of the game with a rocket that flew past Bursik into the top corner.

With him leading the way, Celtic again look the team to beat this season. They looked so slick and confident, and never really had to exert themselves to take the three points.
Lacklustre Hibs well beaten

Gray spoke after the opening league defeat to St Mirren about how their second-half collapse was unacceptable, but they continued in much the same vein.

Kyogo was afforded far too much space to let fly from the edge of the box and Bursik was guilty of not pushing the ball to safety. It was a soft concession early in the game and it set the tone.

The home midfield was completely ineffective, with none of Josh Campbell, Joe Newell and Dylan Levitt able to exert any sort of influence.

On the rare occasions Hibs found themselves in possession it was quickly conceded, and Mykola Kuharevich was left to feed off scraps up front.

They failed to have a single shot at goal before the interval and questions remain about what Hibs are attempting to do on the pitch under Gray’s management.

Yes, they improved in the second half, but it would have been nigh on impossible to get worse and Celtic eased off somewhat.

The bright spark was delivered by substitute Bowie, who shrugged off Cameron Carter-Vickers before bending a shot past Kasper Schmeichel and off the bar from a tight angle.

Gray will hope the Scotland Under-21 striker can provide a focal point in attack in the weeks to come, starting with another meeting against Celtic next Saturday in the League Cup.
What they said

Hibernian 0-2 Celtic | David Gray post-match

Hibernian head coach David Gray: “You can’t give a team like Celtic a goal head-start after three minutes.

“When you make individual errors and don’t show bravery on the ball, it can be a long afternoon. We were probably fortunate to only go into half-time 2-0 down.

“Second half was better, we carried more of a threat and a bit more composure on the ball. Obviously we’re really disappointed to lose the game; we need to learn quickly because we’ve got it all to do again next weekend away from home.

“We’ve got a bit of short-term pain at the moment but I’m really positive about where we can take the squad.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “Easter Road is one of the most difficult places to come in Scottish football.

“I thought we were very good for large spells. There were moments in the second half when we went too long, too early.

“We made a great start and showed a real winning attitude and we have quality. We should have had a few more goals.”
