Trivia

  • KO: 15:00; Celtic TV; League Match 5
  • Back after internationals break; Scotland & Ireland lost their matches.
  • Aberdeen also maintain their 100 per cent record. So Celtic on top due to better GD of +14, joint on pts on 15pts.
  • Engels first start for Celtic, MOTM award and scores a goal (penalty). Luke McCowan scores his debut goal for Celtic (what a dream come true). Idah goal ruled offside. First half penalty to Hearts reversed after VAR review (it hit Scales on the shoulder and upper part of arm which is NOT a foul).
  • Kasper Schmeichel is the first goalkeeper in Scotland to not concede a goal in the first 5 league matches since the 1906/07 season (albeit Davie Adams achieved it for the first 6 league games that season).
  • Reports: Celtic to offer Alistair Johnston a bumper new contract and bring him in line with highest earners. A new contract for Greg Taylor is “a real priority” for Brendan Rodgers.
  • Celtic duo Matthew Anderson & Ben Summers on loan to Austrian 2nd-tier outfit Admira Wacker for the season. Left-back Anderson returning after successful spell last season.
  • Celtic wanted £2m for permanent transfer of Gustaf Lagerbielke, but Twente could not afford to pay the fee before taking him on loan, acc to the Dutch club’s technical director, Arnold Bruggink.
  • Former Leicester City right-back Danny Simpson revealed he was “very close” to joining Celtic, then managed by Neil Lennon, in 2019 but blames the Celtic board for the move falling through.
  • St Johnstone cut away fan allocation of tickets to both Celtic and Sevco fans! Unbelievable! Playing the game in front of sections of empty seats.
  • Former Sevco winger Jamie Murphy has claimed his transfer move from Brighton & Hove Albion was nearly scrapped after another Scottish club told the English outfit the Ibrox club could not afford the deal. Which club? He never said…
  • Ex-Celt Patryk Klimala joined his third club inside a year after agreeing loan deal with Aussie A-League side Sydney FC.
  • Celtic Women’s Team: drawn against FC Vorskla Poltava in Round 2 of #UWCL Qualifying! Both matches being played at Excelsior stadium.
  • VAR: The SFA have admitted that a mistake was made against Celtic in the opening SPFL match of the season. Willie Collum has given a factual breakdown of the foul on Kyogo Furuhashi by Robbie McCrorie but offered no explanation as to why Greg Aitken refused to step in and award Celtic a penalty. There seemed little doubt that the Celtic forward was wiped out, match referee can be excused for missing it at ground level but with multiple camera angles from Sky Sports decided not to intervene and award a penalty.
  • UEFA annual analysis of European football: Scotland the best attended league per capita; 7th highest average attendance; only 16 teams in Europe had more than 1 million in league attendances, with Celtic the only team outside the top 5 leagues! Scotland were highlighted as having one of the lowest % of homegrown players in Europe. On the plus side, Celtic were one of only 16 Champions League Clubs able to list a full 25-man squad by meeting the homegrown quota.
  • Report: Sevco chairman John Bennett informed his club of intention to resign.

Summary

“Arne [Engels] showed a real good composure. For Luke [McCowan], a real special moment to score your first goal when you’re a Celtic supporter. To get that applause from the crowd, a real special day.”
Brendan Rodgers

As Engels went to take his penalty you could clearly hear in the Celtic audio for the pitch side angles of the video goals Shankland shouting “BIG PRESSURE! BIG PRESSURE!”, and then a fellow Hearts player shouting “£10m? AYE RIGHT!”… and he slots it home easily!

Radar of KDS:

Lucky to get a very poor hearts to work off some post-break rustiness against.

Thought we played some nice stuff at times, but let down by poor passing in the final third. The number of times we played a square ball from the right wing straight to a Hearts defender.

Khun started off really brightly, and had one run in particular that was sensational, but fell away after half an hour or so.

Kyogo should have had a couple, Hatate was off the pace, and Maeda’s poor technique was shown up time and again against a fast defender. He got nothing out of Hearts’ Taylor all match. It showed that they’d played next to no football for two weeks.

Gordon got done like a kipper by Engel’s little glance to the left corner on his run up. No wonder he never gets near penalties. His candy floss wrists for the 2nd goal is the sort of cockup he’s always capable of.

Schmeichel, on the other hand, still looks a big step up from Joe. Will be a big player for us in Europe.

I could definitely get used to seeing hearts at the bottom of the table. Lovely stuff.

Biscuit Tim off KDS:

Just back in from the game

It was straightforward enough / first half was very much one way traffic

Overplayed things a bit oo much for me – always making the extra pass rather then shoot

Kyogo and Hatate didn’t have a particularly good game

Hertz are a terrible tea.m – that was st Johnstone levels of tone wasting, fouling , stop the game and hang on to the 85th minute and then go for it

Casper did what was needed as well – he’s a absolute cracker of a signing

If Hatate doesn’t start to influence games more – as I said at half time – Bernardo will be very happy to share the midfield with McGregor and Engles

Special mention for Palma who came and showed the level of touch that Kenny miller would be proud of

Wonderful to see them and their scumbag fans bottom of the league

E-Tims @ETimsNet: Windswept, interesting & inane post-match (just in the hoose) thoughts. Wasn’t the best performance today. Couple of sitters missed but passing way off from many players. AJ, Reo, Kuhn & others….but…we ground out a win. You need to do this over the course of a season. hought Scales was excellent again today after being outstanding v the Zombies two weeks back. CCV solid as ever. Taylor on a fine run of form. CalMac running the show in mid. In terms of Engels, solid touch/technique but what presence…like a tank in mid! One noticeable aspect is the quality of player on the bench. Miles ahead of what we had last season. What a difference this will hopefully make as the season progresses…being able to keep the levels of play/tempo/energy/quality at a good level or bring players on to win game. The ref overturned the Hearts on the basis of a factual handball. The ball hit above the penalised part of the arm. It could not be given no matter proximity, intent, position etc. it his a point of the body which isn’t an offence. Good analysis on sportscene (for a change!)

@celticrumours in very hubristic mood: We have yet to concede a goal in the league. Never mind going invincible, we are going to granny everyone else in the league. We have yet to concede a goal in the league. Never mind going invincible, we are going to granny everyone else in the league.

More on this story

Celtic have defeated Hearts to maintain their perfect start to the season with their sixth win from six games in all competitions.

Arne Engels marked his first start for the club with a goal from the penalty spot to put the league leaders ahead early in the second-half.

Fellow January signing Luke McCowan was also on target as he scored late on to secure a 2-0 win and put another three points on the board.

It’s now 15 points from the first five games in the league for the reigning champions as they aim to make four-in-a-row.

At the other end of the table pressure continues to build on Steven Naismith after the Tynecastle club, who are without a single win this season, fell to their seventh consecutive defeat that leaves them rock-bottom of the Premiership,

Celtic started on the front foot and the first chance of the day fell to Engels after a good run and cross by Alistair Johnston, but the Belgian’s effort failed to hit the target.

Kyogo and Daizen Maeda also had early chances before Reo Hatate forced a good save from Craig Gordon.

Record signing Engels, named in the starting line-up for the first time following his move from Augsburg, came close again but was denied by woodwork as his shot cannoned off the post.

It was one-way traffic for the first half-hour but when Hearts did manage to get an attack the ref pointed to the spot for a penalty after the ball ricocheted off Liam Scales in the box after a James Penrice corner.

But the official overturned his decision after being called over to the VAR monitor to review the incident.

The visitors had a good spell after that as they started to put pressure on the Celtic backline.

Kyogo had a sight of goal up the other end after some tidy build up play by the home side, but the forward scooped his ambitious shot over the bar.

Lawrence Shankland then tried his luck from distance with a shot from around 30-yards out that was on target all the way but well saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

Celtic had another opportunity to break the deadlock as the first-half was drawing to an end but Gordon denied Kyogo from close range before Penrice did well to block Kuhn from the rebound when the winger looked certain to score.

It was all level at the break after an eventful first 45 minutes in the east end of Glasgow.

Celtic got themselves in front early in the second-half after they were awarded a penalty for a Penrice handball.

Johnston fired the ball into the box and it deflected off the defender’s arm before going out of play.

The referee was called over the monitor again and pointed to the spot after a quick review and Engels stepped before putting the ball into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

Then in the last minute of the game McCowan secured the win with his first goal for the club to make it 2-0 in the last minute of normal time.

Adam Idah then had the ball in the net in injury-time but his strike was ruled for offside after a VAR check.

Celtic will now turn their attention to Slovan Bratislava when they get their Champions League campaign underway on Wednesday.

Arne Engels and Luke McCowan delighted to get off the mark for Celtic

Both Arne Engels and Luke McCowan could be pleased with their contribution in the 2-0 win over Hearts today (Saturday).

The Belgian midfielder produced a Man of the Match performance, and opened the scoring with a coolly-taken penalty early in the second-half – his first goal for the Hoops

And McCowan came off the bench and also netted his first goal for his bhoyhood club to make the points secure for the Champions and ensure that it’s five league wins out of five for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Juts for good measure, the clean sheet means that this team is the first Celtic side since 1906 to not concede a goal in their opening five league fixtures, an impressive achievement in itself.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the game, the two goalscorers were clearly delighted with how the afternoon had gone.

Arne Engels said: “It’s an amazing feeling and to get the win at home.

“It wasn’t an easy one because we didn’t score in the first-half, but we stayed calm and we knew the chances would come and that we would score. So I’m happy for the team and that’s the most important thing.”

Luke McCowan said: “The amount of chances we create, we know we’re going to score goals, and getting a second goal means it’s nice to have a wee cushion there.

“It was special to score. I had some family here today, hoping that I’d get on, and to make it even better, I came on and got a goal, so it is a special feeling for me.”

New Bhoys going for goals in 2-0 win for the champions

New Bhoys Arne Engles and Luke McCowan slotted in like jigsaw pieces to the team and also slotted away the two most important kicks in the game

The Celts maintained their spot at the top of the tree with a 2-0 win over Hearts as they contained the Edinburgh side who looked to hit on the break throughout the match.

VAR checks on two penalty calls saw the referee reverse both of his decisions, first after awarding the visitors a spot-kick, then after refusing a Celtic penalty call, overturn that decision as well

Belgian Bhoy Arne Engels brought the house down when his spot kick gave him his first goal in the Hoops and the lead against Hearts early in the second half after he was unlucky on a couple occasions in the first 45.

Then, near the end of the 90, McCowan raised the roof when his shot made the game safe for the Celts.

Despite the penalty scare which gave the visitors a bit of a boost, the bulk of the play was concentrated around the Hearts box with a number of chancess for the Celts coming close.

Engels, Kyogo, Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda were all unlucky with blocks, the woodwork and Craig Gordon between the sticks all conspiring to record Celtic’s first goal-less first half of the term.

Engels shot just wide from six yards after Alistair Johnston played the ball over in the third minute then Maeda showed a lovely piece of skill to flick the ball over the head of Gordon, but the move was flagged for offside.

Kuhn then threaded not one but two excellent ball through the entire Hearts defence in quick succession, the first was to Kyogo who shot narrowly past from just inside the box, the second was to Maeda, but his attempt was blocked for a corner.

A long-range Reo Hatate shot was saved by Gordon who managed to divert the ball one-handedly before Engles showed some lovely skill six yards from goal to control the ball with his right foot and shoot with his left only to see the ball crack off the post as the Celts turned up the heat

Greg Taylor also had an attempt blocked after Scales found Maeda, but then, from their first corner, Hearts thought they had won a penalty when the ball came off Scales’ arm, but his close proximity to the attacker saw the referee’s initial award rescinded.

Another penalty shout at the same goal, but this time after the turnaround saw the exact opposite scenario when a Taylor cross came off a maroon arm, and, to everyone’s amazement, the ref ignored the call.

VAR didn’t though, and after being called to check the screen, the expected outcome came to be and the ref rightly pointed to the spot.

The ball was handed to Engels and he calmly sent Craig Gordon the wrong way to give Celtic the lead.

The Belgian was desperately unfortunate later when a deft flick right in front of goal was deflected for a corner

Just as in the first half, Lawrence Shankland tested Kasper Schmeichel from distance, and the keeper was called on in the 82nd minute when he got down low on the line to stop a shot from Musa Drammeh.

That was as close as Hearts got though, despite applying some late pressure in the game, but, as ever, the telling pressure came from the men in green and white.

And that was the case near closing time with a goal that came from the bench with three subs playing their part.

Luis Palma strode forward and found James Forrest, he played the ball back to the ‘D’ and McCowan fired in the perfect shot low to Craig Gordon’s right – the game was marked ‘safe’.

Celtic continued their 100% start to the season as the champions and Hearts experienced contrasting fortunes with VAR.

The visitors had a first-half penalty award overturned after Lawrence Shankland’s header came off Liam Scales’ arm.

And, after the break, Nicolas Kuhn’s cross hit James Penrice’s hand and the review resulted in record signing Arne Engels scoring his first Celtic goal from the spot.

Luke McCowan also opened his Celtic account with a late strike, confirming Hearts slipped a point adrift at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.

Brendan Rodgers’s side lead Aberdeen on goal difference and host Slovan Bratislava in Wednesday’s Champions League opener.

The latest Hearts news

An improved performance from the visitors, who take on St Mirren next, ultimately ended in a seventh straight defeat in all competitions.

Referee Colin Steven had been quick to point to the spot after the Scales incident but a prolonged VAR check ended with Celtic restarting on a dropped ball.

Neither Steven nor his assistant initially penalised Penrice, whose hand was outstretched, and it was more disappointment for Hearts as VAR ruled in the hosts’ favour.

Engels, signed from Augsburg for a reported 11m, was given the responsibility rather than Reo Hatate and the new Belgium cap, 21, showed no signs of nerves as he rolled the ball past Craig Gordon.

Hearts’ best chance came just before the McCowan goal from the edge of the penalty area. Musa Drammeh stretched out a foot to meet fellow substitute Blair Spittal’s low cross but Kasper Schmeichel saved on his line.

And the clean sheet meant Celtic recorded five wins without conceding at the start of a season for the first time since 1906 – only the second time in their history.
Celtic take longer to get job done

Celtic, who had led by the 17th minute in all of their previous games this season, met greater resistance in Hearts than previous opponents. Still, the home side were profligate.

Kyogo Furuhashi fired wide after being sent clean through before Hatate’s deflected shot was dealt with by veteran goalkeeper Gordon.

A quick throw-in by Alistair Johnston was flicked on by Kuhn for Engels to control and shoot but the Belgian’s effort rattled Gordon’s left-hand post.

Kyogo was denied superbly by Gordon and Kuhn’s follow-up was cleared off the line by Penrice.

The converted penalty allowed Celtic the breathing space they sought and allowed Rodgers the chance to withdraw Kyogo, Hatate and Engels during the second half with Wednesday in mind.

McCowan was one of the beneficiaries and Gordon could only get a hand to his shot in off the post.

And Adam Idah thought he had netted his first of the campaign in added time when he met a Greg Taylor cross but an offside against Luis Palma earlier in the move kept the score at 2-0.
Grittier Hearts ultimately come up short

Hearts head coach Steven Naismith has been criticised this season for flitting between formations but, tactically, he made the right calls for the trip to Glasgow.

The 3-5-2 formation pitched Shankland and Kenneth Vargas, later replaced by Drammeh, as the attacking outlets and they battled hard to get their team up the park.

They had to make the most of set pieces and from one, Shankland’s header was kept out by Schmeichel.

A long-range effort by Shankland effort had the keeper diving but it always looked like a comfortable save for the Dane.

But the Drammeh chance could have put a completely different complexion on the game and their start to the season.

A trip to Paisley next Saturday, while other clubs are on League Cup duty, at least gives Hearts the chance to make up some ground.
What they said

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “By the rule, the officials were correct [to overturn the Hearts penalty award]. On the same token, if your arms up and the ball hits you, then it’s going to be a penalty.

“[Reo Hatate] was the number one taker. That’s the selflessness of Reo. The number two taker was Arne [Engels]. He stuck it away really well. A good performance by him.

“To be a Celtic supporter and get a goal at Celtic Park, what a special moment for [Luke McCowan] and his family.”

Hearts head coach Steven Naismith: “The key moments in the game are the penalties. For me, they’re both in the same camp. If one’s given, they should be given. If one’s not given, the other one shouldn’t be. They both hit the hand.

“These moments are big in these games. The luck was against us.”

Record signing Arne Engels and Luke McCowan scored their first Celtic goals to maintain their winning start after Hearts were controversially denied a penalty.

Belgian Engels, who completed his £11m move on deadline day, fired home from the spot in the second half after James Penrice was penalised for handball.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland saw his header come off Liam Scales’ arm before the break only for VAR to overturn the penalty decision.

McCowan saw his ball go in off the post just eight minutes after he came off the bench, with Adam Idah’s stoppage-time goal ruled out for offside.

It is the first time Celtic have won five league matches without conceding since 1907, while Hearts are bottom of the Premiership with one point.

Engels was chosen ahead of Paulo Bernardo after making his debut off the bench against Rangers two days after joining from Augsburg.

The midfielder twice came close in the first half, arriving in the box at the right time to fire wide in the third minute and hitting the inside of a post after a good flick by Kuhn.

Kyogo Furuhashi missed a great chance with Gordon rooted to the spot moments after being clattered by the Japanese striker.

Referee Colin Steven pointed to the spot in the first half when Shankland’s header struck the arm of Scales from close range, but he reversed his decision after studying footage.

That decision looked to spur Hearts on and Shankland forced saves from Kasper Schmeichel from long range either side of the interval.

Steven Naismith’s side survived a double scare just before the break when Gordon denied Furuhashi and Penrice made an excellent sliding block to deny Kuhn.

But the left-back was penalised for his next intervention and captain Callum McGregor persuaded Reo Hatate to hand the ball to Engels to send Gordon the wrong way from the spot.

Celtic struggled to build on the opener and Hearts came close when Blair Spittal’s cross set up fellow sub Musa Drammeh. Schmeichel got down well to save.

McCowan settled the home fans’ nerves with his first goal since joining from Dundee and Adam Idah was denied a goal in stoppage-time after VAR picked up an offside after he swept home Greg Taylor’s low cross.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers speaking to Sky Sports:

“All you can ask is that when we have a lot of players away on international duty that when they come back they show up.

“There’s no need to complicate it, just do what we’ve done many times and I thought the players did that really well.

“Give credit to Hearts because they came to defend and they make it difficult, they had good physicality.

“The longer it’s 0-0, it can give the opponents some confidence but we kept persevering, we get the penalty early in the second half and then we push on from there.

“It doesn’t really matter who scores, but I think Arne shows some really good composure with the penalty and it’s nice for him to get the feeling.

“It’s going to take some time for all the signings to mould into how we play and work, but he’s shown today he has that physicality and running power.

“For Luke, a real special moment. To score your first goal when you’re a Celtic supporter and to get that applause from all the crowd, it was a special day.”
Naismith: Neither were penalties!

Hearts head coach Steven Naismith speaking to Sky Sports:

“Small margins have been the difference I think.

“You’re playing against the best team in the country and I thought, first half, we were solid and frustrated them and in the couple of moments we got forward we could have done better.

“In my opinion, from what the directive has been, I’m not sure it is a penalty then in the second half I don’t think theirs is a penalty.

“I think the proximity of player to ball in both incidences, from what we’re seen in the summer, should have said neither were a penalty.

“It’s such a big moment in the game and when the game is stretched Celtic are always such a threat.

“The decisions have been made so I’m not going to say anything that’s controversial. The two of them are in the same ball park, if one is given then they both should be given and if they’re not they’re not.”
