Summary

“Borussia Dortmund are a team under construction at the moment, & the fixture list isn’t easing up with a difficult task on Tuesday night.  They may appear like underdogs, but one should not underestimate Celtic FC & their 17-match winning streak in all competitions”
Prematch Adam Khan German Football Consultant @XxAdamKhanxX

Scales on Trusty pre match “He didn’t look uncomfortable and that’s brilliant. We’re two lefties and he got the short straw playing on the right! But he was so solid on the ground and in the air. He was really, really good.”

“We speak about a team who didn’t lose for many, many games.”
Pre match Borussia Dortmund boss Nuri Sahin says Celtic are ‘no underdogs’

“We’re looking to bring our game to the next level. We’re under no illusions that we’re against a team that are competing at the very top end of elite football. For us, tomorrow, we play for the dreams of the supporters and we’ll be playing for ourselves, to go and enjoy this experience. Whether it’s domestically or in Europe, we want to make ourselves a very difficult team to play against with and without the ball. It’s a wonderful arena, and we embrace these big games, so let’s see where it takes us.”
Brendan Rodger prematch

Chris Sutton @chris_sutton73 · Celtic wanted to go toe to toe… good to be positive but there comes a time when you have to be a bit streetwise and understand levels . Throwing lots of bodies forward when you’re 7-1 down seemed a bit naive… a bit like Madrid… way too open and ruthlessly exploited…

T H E ~ S H A M R O C K @TheShamrock1888 I pine for the days when the Celtic manager used to ask the fans to understand the need for caution and ‘keep the heid’ during Euro ties. Now we’re the ones wanting the manager to be pragmatic and show some defensive capability. It isn’t much to ask.

El Salto of KDS:
A *shambles* almost from the first whistle
Overrun in midfield, rabbits in the headlights at the back
Can’t play simple passes to a team mate
Playing with a high press and three up front against a team who are better at playing the same way
The amount of times they played through us and ended up one on one or two on two was criminal
This has to be on Rodgers, his failure to adapt his philosophy at the highest level has made us a laughing stock on many an occasion
Some players simply sh*t the bed
Beaten in the tunnel
These sort of humblings can upset us domestically as well if we don’t get it out of our system quickly
Only pass marks for me were Scales and Alex Valle

Harry501 of KDS:

I can see the point in sticking to our normal tactics to see how it goes for the first ten minutes given it’s been successful throughout preseason and since, but it’s clear they were too strong going forward and had players more physical and faster to cut thru us given the space they had. I never expected any points if I’m being honest, but I did hope to see BR use some in game management and tactical nous to adapt to and try to nullify what a team like BD were capable of… that never happened sadly. Biggest disappointment for me.

I don’t see the point in singling any individuals out as it’s rehashing old ground on the same players not equipped for this competition. On the new players, it’s their first proper taste at this level with us and all they’ve been up against so far is being dominant domestically, so it’ll be an eye opener.

Hatate and Valle seemed to make a (small) improvement in the second half, but Dortmund were just having fun at that point so were no longer full throttle. Plus Adayemi went off. Valle looks better than GT, so would be nice to see him get a run of games, tho domestically, doesn’t matter as much as that’s Taylor’s level and he’s fine in those games.

Dortmund are a team that you wouldn’t be surprised to see reach the Semis or even the Final again, so that’s what we were up against. They’ve some fantastic attacking players. World class. You could argue that’s a cop out, but it’s also reality imo.

x – GrandOLTeam @JBLuvsCeltic · Celtic has conceded 36 goals in 10 #ChampionsLeague away matches under Brendan. Tonight is the 3rd of those 10 matches where they conceded 7. They also gave up 6 at Atletico last year. They’ve scored 7 in those 10 matches. Can it all be down to talent, or does BR set up wrong?

RSof KDS:

On the manager. An elite coach doesn’t keep shipping cheap goals like that in Europe.

Get a DM like all the big teams (some of them even have two) and your weak defence won’t be consistently exposed.

Dortmund genuinely are not top level and they destroyed us.

Rodgers stood and watched that pish. Tighten it up and avoid the humping.

We had so many failures tonight (probably 10) but Greg Taylor was by miles the worst. JFC. Just stop playing him.

Tbaglt was totally embarrassing tonight.

Misc on KDS:

The fans, the management and the players approached this game with far too much over-confidence due to our very good run of form in the last 7 months. I predicted we would lose 4-2 and even that was over-confidence. Sadly we had a stinker against a big gun who were really in the mood. Conceding straight after 1-1 is what killed us. If we hold on another 10 minutes maybe we would have got the 3rd goal. As i repeated i wrote the Dortmund and Atalanta games off as defeats and probably heavy ones. The games against RB, Brugge, Zagreb, YB and Villa(believe it or not) i believe we can get a good few points in. Again as repeated i wont be sticking the boot in despite a horror night at the office against a proper big gun. The 7 month run we had is possibly the best i’ve seen in my lifetime supporting Celtic.

It’s very important we get over this but also learn from it. Lets get back to winning ways against Ross County on Sunday, beat Aberdeen and at least be a bit more sensible when we play Atalanta away who are another top side. I’m still backing the team to deliver at home and in Europe this season. One absolute stinker of a night is not stopping me believing in this team. We all seen how we have played since we lost to Hearts at the start of March. We are pretty good but sometimes you get a sare face against a top side. That’s football.

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · Brendan Rodgers has lost at least six goals away from home in a UCL game in every season he’s been at Celtic. At what point is he going to learn when playing against the better sides in Europe? 2016: 7-0 vs Barcelona 2017: 7-1 vs PSG 2023: 6-0 vs Atletico 2024: 7-1 vs Dortmund

‘Rodgers’ naive Celtic fall into familiar European trap’

On a bleak night, there was a moment of dark comedy when Brendan Rodgers sat down to assess the unmerciful hiding that had just been inflicted on his team.

“We weren’t quite at our best,” said the Celtic manager in the wake of the deluge that washed over his players.

He said it without fear of contradiction. After watching his team lose 7-1 while committing so many errors that 10-1 wouldn’t have flattered Borussia Dortmund, ‘not quite at their best’ was a fairly unarguable take.

Dortmund preyed on Celtic’s naivety and rendered them quivering wrecks inside half an hour. It was brutal. Their end was swift and horrible.

The errors that the spooked visitors made were jaw-dropping. The mere sight of a yellow and black jersey turned their composure to mush.

Some of the goals were outstanding finishes, lustily banged home by players who couldn’t believe their luck.

Julian Brandt found as much space as he liked in midfield and nobody thought it sensible to do something about it. But Celtic don’t really have a player who is made that way, a destroyer, a guy who can sense danger, a character who can – Lord forbid – let Brandt know he’s there.

Celtic suffer Champions League torment in Dortmund

Rodgers won’t change approach despite rout

In a word, Celtic were soft.

Many of the goals had their origins in players losing the plot in possession. Daizen Maeda did it; Alastair Johnston did it; Auston Trusty did it. Three Celtic players did it within seconds of each other in the lead-up to the seventh goal.

The “acid test” Rodgers called this. “For us, it’s looking to bring our game to the next level,” he said on the eve of the match.

Of course, he didn’t say which direction he was thinking of when talking about the next level. Up or down?

Dortmund might have noted Rodgers’ fighting talk about how great a place the team was in (he didn’t mean Dortmund) and how he knew that they had the mentality to “hurt teams”.

Based on weekly routings of clubs with a tiny percentage of their budget. Flimsy evidence that they chose to interpret as compelling. Again.

This was a monumental humiliation for Celtic, a team that once again fell into the trap of believing that just because you can play freewheeling football against St Johnstone in Perth on a Saturday means that you can try to do the same against Borussia in Dortmund on a Tuesday.

Pragmatism? Closing the space? Staying in the fight? Keeping it tight and compact in the face of Dortmund’s obvious pace and danger? No, no. They set up like they set up against St Johnstone and Falkirk and Hibs and Rangers.

They felt they could go toe-to-toe with Dortmund because that’s what they do in Scotland and opponents fall at their dancing feet. They were pretty bullish about their readiness to transfer domestic superiority into the unforgiving fields of Europe. They’re nowhere near.

Until Rodgers introduces some overdue realism when playing some of Europe’s best, then this is likely to continue. There’ll be another shellacking down the line if he doesn’t change course.

Champions League Debrief: Arsenal and Man City win big, Celtic lose

‘Repeat offenders punished again’

Celtic are repeat offenders under their manager. That’s a second 7-1 Champions League defeat he has suffered at the club. That’s on top of a 5-0, a 6-0 and a 7-0.

Most of the biggest beatings in Celtic’s European history have Rodgers’ name beside them. He’s been a brilliant domestic manager, but Europe has been painful.

We saw again Celtic’s habit of conceding goals in clusters. They shipped three in quick order in Dortmund and the game was done.

Last season they conceded three times in 16 minutes in the 6-0 loss to Atletico Madrid and twice in three minutes against Lazio in Rome.

This goes back a while. In the Europa League in the last season of Rodgers’ first spell in 2018-19, they lost two in six minutes against Salzburg, two in four minutes against Leipzig, and two in seven minutes against Valencia.

In other Champions League games under Rodgers, they conceded two in two and another two in six on the same night against PSG. In the return game, they lost two in four and another two in six.

They shipped three goals in 10 against Barcelona in 2016 in that 7-0 defeat.

‘It’s very difficult for us to get to that level’ – Rodgers

What happened to them in Dortmund was a shock, but it shouldn’t have been.

It’s just a continuation of a theme involving a manager who has been singularly unable to achieve even the modest goal of making his team resilient in the face of superior opposition. Too often they go down in flames.

Later on Tuesday, Rodgers was asked if he would do anything different in the way of formation. “Not really,” he replied.

Their next game is away to Atalanta, who beat a mighty Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in last season’s Europa League final and who started their Champions League campaign with a 0-0 draw at home to Arsenal.

That one has menace written all over it if Celtic sleep-walk into it in the way they appear to have sleep-walked their way to Dortmund.

In the preamble to Tuesday, Rodgers outlined his goals for the night. “I’m not looking for perfection,” he said, which was just as well.

What he got had a wearying familiarity to it. Pride before a fall and all of that.

You’d say he needs to learn lessons about how he sets up his team for these tough assignments in Europe, but those things were said in his first spell, too.

History is repeating itself in more ways than one.

Dortmund remind Celtic of their European status with battering on banks of Ruhr

Celtic were given the most sobering of reminders about where they stand in the football food chain on a galling night in Germany, losing 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Rightly praised for their excellent, previously unblemished start to the season – which included a 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava on Champions League opening night – Scotland’s top dogs were reduced to pitiful poodles by last season’s runners-up. Celtic were lucky to escape the Signal Iduna Park having only shipped seven goals.

This landslide defeat – not quite at the scale of their worst European loss, 7-0 by PSG – will surely quieten the chatter of Celtic potentially finishing in the top eight of this newly-revamped league phase. Qualifying for the play-offs will be a roaring success for a team that simply cannot cope with the demands of playing away from home in the Champions League.

Six more matches await Celtic – Atalanta, Leipzig, Club Brugge, Dinamo Zagreb, Young Boys and Aston Villa. None of them will be as arduous as this assignment against Dortmund and the Yellow Wall. Celtic were completely bulldozed in a horribly one-sided first-half that ended 5-1 in favour of the hosts. Karim Adeyemi scored a hat-trick, the visitors conceded two penalties and were ridiculously sloppy in possession.

Key centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers, suffering from a toe injury, was badly missed – but he would have only stopped so much of the bleeding. His replacement Auston Trusty and Liam Scales were horribly exposed at centre-half by a midfield in front of them that offered so little resistance. Captain Callum McGregor was miles off his usual level, and new signings Arne Engels and Paulo Bernardo beside him paled into insignificance against their Dortmund counterparts.

Manager Brendan Rodgers could only watch on in anguish from the sidelines, the horror across his face there for all to see. His team, far too open and weak, were ripped apart by Dortmund’s pace, passing and precision. They should have been set up in a far more rigid fashion.

The night started badly on seven minutes when their goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel took down Jamie Gittens in the box. A penalty was awarded, the Dane was booked and Emre Can converted from 12 yards classily.

Celtic’s response belied what was about to unfold. Two minutes later, Engels swung in a lovely cross and Daizen Maeda bundled home from close range. Given Celtic came into this match with a degree of optimism, the leveller merely swelled some of their fans’ belief that they could give Dortmund a game.

What happened next extinguished such thoughts. Julian Brandt played in Adeyemi and his shot took a wicked deflection off Trusty and looped past Schmeichel. The same player lashed home from an acute angle, although the keeper could have done better. Engels then caught Adeyemi in the box for another penalty, finished expertly by Serhou Guirassy, and then Adeyemi had a first-half hat-trick with a low effort after Celtic once again carelessly gave away possession.

Rodgers would have been thankful to get his team in at the break to press a reset button. They were better in the second period – helped by their tormentor Adeyemi injuring a hamstring not long after the restart – but their resistance only lasted another 20 minutes when Guirassy skinned Liam Scales and finished sumptuously.

It was now a matter of keeping the score at six. Celtic’s goal difference was now a negative, unthinkable after the buzz of hammering Slovan Bratislava two weeks ago. Adam Idah ought to have restored it back to zero but couldn’t head home from a couple of yards out. Felix Nmecha added a seventh not long after, the final punch of an absolute battering on the banks of the Ruhr.

Life begins with a new chapter at 40. Or so they say… Celtic crashed to a 34th defeat in 40 Champions League away games with a humiliating 7-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in Germany last night…

Celtic had only conceded four goals across their nine competitive outings so far this season. Within 42 minutes the Hoops had let in five and became the first British team in 27 years to concede five goals in the first half of a European group stage game.

The stats are important to put into perspective of how bad a night it really was. Reflection, and ‘learning from our lessons’ no longer wash with a Celtic support who are exasperated by performances away from home in Europe’s elite club competition.

The Celtic manager, who has broken countless domestic records in Scotland and has rightfully been praised for is starting to break a few in Europe, all for all the wrong reasons. He has now managed Celtic teams in Europe that have shipped in seven goals on three occasions (Barcelona 7-0, PSG 7-1, Dortmund 7-1), six goals once (Atletico last campaign) and five once (PSG, 2017). Why are his Celtic teams not learning from their lessons?

Invariably, the Irishman’s side tried to stand toe to toe with Dortmund. It was a firm reminder that the Champions League finalists can embarrass you with either a defence splitting pass, outstanding movement or clinical finishing. The key differences at this level. Coupled with shooting yourself in the foot, life was made easy for Nuri Sahin’s side who hardly got out of second gear.

This is not something new for Celtic, sadly. Rodgers, Postecoglou, Lennon and Deila teams have all been at one stage given more than a few knockout blows on the continent. Some more than others. Surely, it is time for Rodgers to offer a more pragmatic approach to these games?

When he guided his Leicester team to a Europa Conference League semi-final, narrowly missing out on reaching the final, his side was compact and hard to beat. Instead of trying to always throw punches against top opponents, the Celtic manager should take a step back and be cautious when travelling to arenas like the Signal Iduna Park. Coming out with a high-press, all guns blazing approach only leads to one result. As we all saw, it is not a very nice one.

Furthermore, this abject, shambolic record of continuing to be embarrassed in the Champions League cannot continue. The scoreline is a horror show for Rodgers – who is in badly need of some signs that Celtic can compete away from Glasgow’s East End at this level. Since his return to Glasgow, it has been four Champions League defeats away from home, conceding 17 and only scoring once.

Nights like last night only point towards that there is still major work and healing to do in order to turn a corner and move on from past results like we watched unfolding in Dortmund yesterday evening.

Radical planning needs to be done prior to Bergamo. Europa League winners, who are a very similar profile to Dortmund. Will Rodgers learn from his harsh lessons in Italy?

Brendan Rodgers spoke to the media after last night’s 7-1 Champions League defeat in Dortmund, here’s how the Celtic manager explained what had happened and what has to happen now…

1. Brendan Rodgers on a tough night in the Champions League, watching his side get thrashed 7-1 by Dortmund…

“It was a tough watch, to be honest. We weren’t quite at our best, and they showed why they’re a top, top team. Yeah, we didn’t make the start that we wanted and then I’ve just said to the players afterwards, I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game where I feel that every single mistake that we made got punished.

“And that’s the level, any misplaced pass or moment that they had, it just seemed to end up in the back of the net. And then on the other side, we had a couple of moments, obviously the second half, and it didn’t just quite fall for us.

“So, yeah, I think at this level, especially away from home against a top team, you need to be at your highest level. And we weren’t that. And they were. You could see the level and quality that they have.”

2. Brendan Rodgers on why his players made so many mistakes on the night…

“I think that’s the learning that comes away from this level. I think that we may have got spooked a little bit early on. We get two on each, good. Unfortunately, the toe poke goes through and then the guy gets the penalty, put them one up.

“But then we get the equaliser and then very, very quickly we’re then two on behind and they get a foothold in the game and start to move it well and we start to chase it a little bit. So it was a mixture of our positioning but also then just our quality and our passing. We were short or we just made the right pass and our touch wasn’t quite right.

“We just didn’t play a good game technically either.”
3. Brendan Rodgers on whether in retrospect he’d have done anything differently at the start…

“No, not really. I think it’s one that we went in high in confidence. The team’s been playing ever so well. We were in a really, really good place. But I think we needed to start the game much better than we did. We gave away cheap goals. We analysed the game back but there were certain issues, and positioning that we would have to be better at. We got punished for passes and loose bits of play which at this level like you’ve seen tonight, they will punish you. It was absolutely ruthless in the finishing. It was incredible to see. Unfortunately for us, we were on the back of it.”
4. Brendan Rodgers on whether this game is a reminder of the level where he wants Celtic to be at…

“It’s very, very difficult for us to get to that level. It’s a different level with the greatest respect. But what we’d want to be is more competitive than we were tonight. I think that was what was disappointing from our perspective.

“I thought the second half the guys showed a really good spirit. We were much braver on the ball but cleaner with our pass and got into some much better areas and had the ball for longer periods.

“In the first half we were too rushed. We know we’ve got speed in the top end of the field but we just gave it away too early. You do that against good players then you’re chasing the ball. But the level is, it’s always a learning process. Like you say, for us, we’ve seen tonight the very highest level of the European game. For us, we get punished but we will learn from it for sure.”
5. Brendan Rodgers on whether he’ll reassess the approach when going away from home against the stronger teams and how much can Celtic go toe-to-toe with them…

“Yeah, I didn’t think we were going toe-to-toe with them. I think there are certain moments when we can press the game so from a static position, we’re there to press it. Of course then when you’re in that mid-pitch, I just felt that we needed to be tighter.

“The times we’re positioning was a little bit too open and you’ve just got to really tighten the game or else they play through you and that’s what they did. Once they’re in turn, then that speed and power that they have at the very highest level, then you see where it takes them. So yeah, in moments we were pressing the game.

“In moments we’re in but we needed to be tighter and more compact in certain moments which let them get through. They get two penalties in the first half and then they score an absolute worldie from the young guy from outside the box, the one who nicks off Daizen inside and finishes with an unbelievable finish. Daizen has a touch, a little bit loose and then he fires it in. so before you know it you’re 4-1 down and that’s just sheer quality.

“Nothing positioning in that. That’s what I said earlier, just getting punished for mistakes that you wouldn’t normally. But with a very elite player, you make that slight mistake, boom, you get punished. Obviously, it’s the first defeat in a long time but it’s a heavy one.”
6. Brendan Rodgers on how he make sure that hammering doesn’t scar the players or linger in their minds especially when coming back to this competition in a couple of weeks time away to Atalanta…

“We knew that over eight games what it is we wanted to achieve but we also knew that these opening games away from home were going to be a real eye-opener for us and a real challenge for us. No one within the players and the management and coaching staff felt any different and we knew it was going to be a big challenge.

“Obviously, that form coming into it was absolutely fantastic and we would have wanted to be much better this evening. but that’s my job, my job is to go away and inspire the players again and like I say we analyse and you need to learn from it or else you can really get punished at this level. but this is a fantastic group of players that will do that, very conscientious and we’ll look at it and see where we can be better.”
7. Brendan Rodgers on whether the result and performance surprised him or whether he saw it coming in some ways, whether he thought it was always possible that a team like Dortmund could do this to Celtic…

“It’s always possible just because of their level. We come into it with great optimism and that’s what you want to have but we’re obviously in the notion as well that we’re playing against top, top players and I think you see that this evening at the top of the game and can really punish you. But like I say we have to take it on the chin.

“The players have been brilliant over a long period of time now. We had a really good start in the competition. so we’ve got three points on the board tonight and the best team won by a long way and we can learn from it and get going again at the weekend.”
8. Brendan Rodgers on his team being spooked by the early goals and whether that’s something he can work on…

“Yes, absolutely. Well, Atalanta will be a different game. It’s a more man-to-man game so you have to be really strong in your duel and be able to work the ball. But yes, tonight surprisingly we weren’t so… have that assurance with the ball and that authority that we normally have and maybe come from the quick goals that we conceded. But it’s the level and if you want to compete at this level then we would have to be better with and without the ball.”
9. Brendan Rodgers on the broader point about the big step between playing domestic football in Scotland and playing top sides in the Champions League, where mistakes like last night might not be punished at home but in Europe they are more ruthless…

“It’s a fair point. It is because you’re just not coming up against that level. But as I said before, I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game where it just felt that every missed play or every missed pass or just a slight error ended up with a goal. It was absolutely ruthless finishing.

“And when you see that level, you know what it takes to really push on. But for us, we operate in the league that we’re in. We have to be the best that we can be in that. That then qualifies us to come into this stage and that’s what we want to be. Nights like tonight are hard. They can be tough but it can happen. So we have to learn from it and move on.”

Celtic’s unbeaten start to the season came to a shuddering halt as they were taught a Champions League lesson by a rampant Borussia Dortmund inspired by the electric Karim Adeyemi.

Daizen Maeda cancelled out Emre Can’s early penalty in a frantic start, but it proved to be the briefest of respites for the Scottish champions.

Adeyemi ran riot with a lethal hat-trick, with another spot-kick from Serhou Guirassy helping the home side to a 5-1 half-time lead.

Guirassy struck again after the break and Felix Nmecha completed the rout with the seventh goal.

The victory sets Dortmund up to take on Real Madrid next in a rerun of last season’s final, while Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic will have to improve drastically when they head to Italy to take on Atalanta in two weeks time.

More reaction & have your say on Celtic

Celtic made the worst possible start, conceding a penalty when Jamie Gittens showed rapid pace to slalom through and lull Kasper Schmeichel into bringing him down in the box. Can coolly converted from the spot.

The response was swift. Arne Engels delivered a beauty of a cross from wide on the right that Maeda bundled in from close range.

If that equaliser was meant to settle down the Scottish champions, they barely had time to draw breath before Dortmund struck again.

The speed of Adeyemi was frightening the life out of the Celtic defence and he raced clear to fire past Schmeichel with the aid of a deflection off Auston Trusty.

The 22-year-old German international produced a moment of magic for Dortmund’s third, firing a rocket high into the net from the edge of the box to make it 3-1.

Celtic players looked unable to catch a breath and things started to really unravel when Engels caught Adeyemi and Guirassy buried the penalty to make it four.

The Yellow Wall was rocking now and Adeyemi had his hat-trick before half-time, firing in another fabulous long-range strike to beat Schmeichel’s despairing dive.

Celtic managed to stop the bleeding for the first 20 minutes of the second half, but Guirassy punished a Alistair Johnson mistake to bury his second and Dortmund’s sixth.

A wretched night was summed up for Celtic when substitute Adam Idah was unable to head into an empty net and Nmecha smashed in Dortmund’s seventh at the other end moments later to bring the curtain down on their humiliation.

Celtic lucky to only concede seven

After nine wins from nine this season – including an impressive 5-1 destruction of Slovan Bratislava on matchday one – confidence was coursing through this Celtic side before what Rodgers described as an “acid test”.

Celtic have only ever won twice away from home in the Champions League, and never in 14 attempts on German soil. That never looked like ending here.

Drubbings at the hands of Europe’s big guns have become an unfortunate habit for Celtic in recent years, and this mauling will be filed alongside similar thrashings by the likes of the Real and Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Paris St-Germain.

This Celtic side was supposed to be different, supposed to have found defensive solidity to go with the attacking potency they have displayed this season.

Missing their defensive lynchpin, Cameron Carter-Vickers, it was always going to be a huge task to contain a Dortmund team who looked like scoring every time they flooded forward.

Had it not been for some last-ditch interventions from Liam Scales and good saves from Schmeichel, Celtic’s record European defeat of 7-0 could have been beaten.

Sometimes you have to accept the opposition are just levels above, but Rodgers will be frustrated at the unforced errors that compounded Celtic’s problems.

This was always going to be Celtic’s toughest test and they came up desperately short. Now the challenge is to rediscover something much closer to their best for the remaining Champions League games.
Dortmund have tools to go deep again

Dortmund may have lost some of the key men that helped them to last season’s final, but they look to have all the tools to go deep into this tournament once again.

The likes of Jadon Sancho, Mats Hummels and Niclas Fullkrug may have moved on, but they still have stars all over the pitch and none shone brighter than Adeyemi.

His electric pace, and that of Englishman Gittens, tore Celtic to shreds, with the classy Julian Brandt pulling the strings and picking the holes in the visitors’ ragged defence.

Not many opponents will be as accommodating as Celtic were and tougher tests await, but Dortmund look to have the blend of pace, power and guile to trouble anyone.

Celtic remain without a Champions League win against German opposition, losing each of their last five such matches (P9 D2 L7)

Brendan Rodgers is the only manager to see his side concede seven goals in a Champions League match more than once (also 0-7 v Barcelona in 2016 and 1-7 v PSG in 2017).

Celtic are the first British team to concede five goals in the first half of a game in major European competition since Cwmbran Town against Progresul Bucharest in the 1997-98 UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup.

They have failed to win any of their last 28 Champions League matches when conceding first, losing 27 (D1).

Dortmund extended their club record unbeaten home run in the Champions League to 12 matches (W8, D4)

Karim Adeyemi is the first Dortmund player to score a first half hat-trick in a major European game since Marcio Amoroso in a 2002 UEFA Cup semi-final against Milan.

Dortmund had 13 shots on target – their most in a Champions League match since recording 15 v Legia Warsaw in a 6-0 win in September 2016.

If you look at the way Celtic play in the league, they will try to win the ball high up the pitch. That mentality is in the players. It was proven tonight that they can not do that against top teams.

They can take four or five players out of the game with two or three passes, then they are getting at your back four. You have to come up with a different plan or structure to stay in the game.

There were fundamental issues here. Celtic have set up away against Borussia Dortmund as they did at the weekend against St Johnstone, expecting to have the same kind of control. That was never going to happen.

They were a soft touch. They don’t seem to have learned anything. These are monumental hidings that Brendan Rodgers has overseen. They are not getting any better in Europe. They are naive to go and play that way.

Dortmund just lapped it up.

“If you make mistakes like that, you get punished. Credit to Dortmund. We’ve been sobered a little, but we need to take that and bounce back in the next game.

“You get yourself back into the game. The quick goal killed us and rattled us a little bit. When you give good players time on the ball, they will kill you. And that’s what they did.

“I think the game plan was to be in between the two. We understand when you play against good players, you have to suffer a little without the ball. We have to learn from it. We’ve got a lot to think about after that.”

The speed of the Dortmund forward line is frightening the life out of the Celtic defence at the moment though.

Sahin moved to Anfield on loan from Real Madrid for season 2012-13, but left after five months, with three goals and three assists in 12 appearances.

Quotes at the time suggested Sahin hadn’t seen eye to eye with his boss but there was no sign of any ill will during Monday’s media conferences.

“It’ll be really good to see him when he’s making his first steps as a manager,” said Rodgers.

Sahin spoke of Rodgers having “a Spanish vibe” given his focus on possession, adding: “I liked his training sessions, they were very interesting, I was already taking notes for my own coaching career. We meet again 10 years on and I’m looking forward to the duel.”
