Summary

The Hoops started the game well with an eventual crossed ball from Kyogo finding Hatate who placed the ball past Mitov. Minutes later Hatate again found himself in the box but his shot was blocked, falling to Kyogo to slot it away for 2.Aberdeen made two changes in the second half with Sokler narrowing the lead, and later Shinnie found an equaliser. The game could have went either way from there but finished deep into stoppage time with both teams getting a share of the points.

(joebloggscity of TheCelticWik): This will be ranked as a major classic by some neutrals, but both sets of fans in this match will feel they could have taken the three pts.

Before the game, Rodgers was questioned about Aberdeen’s title challenge, said he has been impressed with Aberdeen’s perfect start but is unsure if they will compete with his side for the Scottish Premiership title. This match shows they have greater spirit than we expected. Celtic didn’t hammer their advantage when they had the chance. An excellent dominant first half with two goal and could have been more was stamped out with a good fightback from Aberdeen which saw them equalise and then take a 3-2 lead only thankfully for the goal to be chopped off. Celtic themselves also had a goal chopped off, and despite all the pressure and chances couldn’t grab the winner albeit Aberdeen also had their chances.

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland
it was a great game, some moments of top quality, Engles trying a Lubo, McGrath’s pass, some mistakes, some good goals, some terrible misses, some great goalkeeping, great atmosphere, plenty of tension and the drama at the end could’ve went either way, is what it’s all about.
FT: Celtic 2-2 Aberdeen What a game, you can dissect how poor certain things were, but it was just an absolute battle in that second half, the two best teams in the country and at the end nothing could separate them. Reo Hatate was very good in that first, never wasted a pass, always creates an extra yard of space for himself, and absolutely clinical with his finish to open the scoring. Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · Oct 19
HT: Celtic 2-0 Aberdeen Intriguing game, Aberdeen started well, pressed high & looked confident without creating much, Celtic were patient & happy to invite Dons pressure, then showed their clinical side with 2 goals in 2 mins, Clarkson should’ve got 1 back but fluffed his lines,

Don vito of KDS:

We need tested in Scotland to get better in Europe, we’ve all said it. The sheep tested us and we got a performance that we see in Europe.
The sheep stuck it on us, pressed us and fouled us. I thought in particular they targeted Valle.
Our normal defensive fragility was there for all to see, we are weak of mind and body against any team that decides to give it a go.
I said on here, ages ago, that KS looked fat. He still looks fat and is a downgrade on JH. I really don’t think he’s that good tbh. It is fairly easy to slag the defence but they are left exposed repeatedly because our midfield isn’t right. I think all our midfielders are ok footballers but we need someone different in there, we need a Scott Brown.
We bought idah for nine million and I’m struggling with that at the moment. BR said that he didn’t have a first choice centre forward and idah and kyogo were equal, but that’s obviously nonsense. Idah needs to force himself on.

In Scotland we tend to dominate every match and we don’t require to get better to win matches, therefore the players and the manager stagnate.
The international break didn’t help us yesterday so we have a bit of an excuse but I fear for us v Atalanta they will be all over us like a rash and if we have possession in their half they will rip us apart on the break.

Crocusstreetcelt of KDS:

I don’t think we will see many teams domestically come at us like they did today and testament to them.

Out with the first 15 minutes we should have had that put to bed though.

Why we decided to switch the centre back positions constantly really annoyed me.

The lack of tracking back today from Maeda exposed Valle more than I would have hoped. I think he would look good in a 3-5-2 but our setup is killing him.

That entire side of the field hasn’t evolved since Ange when the left back stepped inside so when that doesn’t happen the midfield doesn’t have a clue what to do and is cut wide open.

Going forward Johnstonel was ok but very cavilier when in possession. Kuhn didn’t help him much and his distribution today was horrendous.

Trusty looks like he can’t pass a ball unless it is placed directly on his left foot.

Schemicael, I dont know what has happened here but you can tell he doesn’t trust that defense in front of him.

Engels looks a player but he needs to earn his spot. McCowan has than overtook him in his cameos which is crazy considering the money spent.

Hatate, as much as I love the wee man, does not have the stamina for a 90 minute game and that is ok. What we need to stop doing is sacfricing our most creative, mercurial, midfielder when our captain hasn’t been contributing anything meaningful for quite some time.

Upfront I don’t know what has happened to Kyogo. The one the last few years would have taken half those chances today on the first ball. I can only put this one down to coaching.

As for the subs. We seen today that jamesy is done. Idah is a carthorse who with work we will do fine with and Bernardo is what he is, a young midfielder who will blow hot and cold. I don’t know what happened in either dressing room at half team but only one team came out fighting and it weren’t us.

Well prepared to be called out on this but this is how I see it

E-Tims @ETimsNet · 21h 1st thoughts on game. We dropped a bit 2nd half, couple of mistakes, they took adv of it & had a right go. We then took over last 15-20 but couldn’t score as they defended for their lives. Obv disappointed we threw away a 2 goal but will say this…what a fucken game of fitba.

Sokler and Shinnie strike as Aberdeen fight back for draw with Celtic

In the 102nd minute, beyond five o’clock, time was called on an extraordinary encounter. The final act, fittingly, was an outstanding goal line block from Duk to deny Alistair Johnston.

Celtic huffed and puffed as they sought to snatch the odd goal in five and place daylight between themselves and Aberdeen at the summit of Scotland’s Premiership. That there was no winner felt appropriate, given Aberdeen’s contribution to this epic. Whether or not Jimmy Thelin’s rejuvenation of Aberdeen will result in major honours remains to be seen. What feels pretty clear is that this, as game of the season, is unlikely to be beaten. This took place in front of Sir Alex Ferguson, who made a specialism out of bringing Aberdeen teams to Glasgow and inflicting bloody noses. The great man must have approved.

Even Celtic’s followers should not begrudge Aberdeen their point. The same support should be fearful of what will transpire in Bergamo on Wednesday, should Celtic be so defensively generous against Atalanta. Without Cameron Carter-Vickers, who missed this game through injury, the Celtic back line is shaky. The unwillingness of Brendan Rodgers to speculate on Carter-Vickers’s situation with Atalanta in mind did not sound particularly hopeful. To his credit, Rodgers did not sugarcoat Celtic’s capitulation from 2-0 ahead here. “We got punished for being careless,” Rodgers said. The Celtic manager cut an irritated figure.

Thelin made attacking substitutions at half-time and totally altered the flow of the match. If that was not worthy of enough praise, Aberdeen’s refusal to wilt during 12 minutes of stoppage time was striking. Lesser teams would have folded. Thelin has a good thing going at Pittodrie. And still going it is, after the most stringent test of all.

At the break, even the most optimistic of Aberdeen’s followers could not have envisaged what was to come. Dimitar Mitov, the Aberdeen keeper, was indecisive as Arne Engels played a through pass to Kyogo Furuhashi. The Japan forward seized his time and opportunity, pulling the ball back for Reo Hatate. Hatate gave Mitov no chance from 12 yards. Kyogo helped himself to Celtic’s second. Hatate’s shot was blocked by the arms of Gavin Molloy, meaning a penalty was likely heading Celtic’s way anyway. Furuhashi removed the need for a video assistant referee check by pouncing on the loose ball. Celtic Park celebrated in a manner which suggested Aberdeen’s heady days were over.
Thelin rightly spotted that the best way to defend against Celtic is to attack. Enter Ester Sokler and Duk, who offered mobility in forward areas. Sokler’s maiden act was to latch onto Jamie McGrath’s through ball and slot beyond Kasper Schmeichel. Celtic failed to heed the warning. A Daizen Maeda error allowed Graeme Shinnie to fire in a shot, which flew past Schmeichel with the aid of a deflection. Shock rippled through the stands.

Aberdeen believed they had completed an astonishing comeback when Slobodan Rubezic’s header from a McGrath free-kick found the net via Duk. The problem was, Duk had used an elbow to deflect the ball. The goal was correctly ruled out.

The sight of 10 minutes on the fourth official’s board would have caused palpitations among the vociferous visiting support. James Forrest forced Mitov into a smart stop as Celtic rallied. Auston Trusty missed a glorious chance from a Paolo Bernardo corner. Adam Idah had the ball in the Aberdeen net but Mitov had been fouled. Luke McCowan won a Celtic free-kick just inches from the penalty area. Mitov saved brilliantly from Idah before Celtic claimed a spot-kick for handball from that incredible Duk intervention.

Thelin, who is calm by nature, smiled as he reflected on “crazy moments” as the clock ticked on, and on, and on. “The players sacrificed themselves,” added the Swede. “They tried with absolutely everything they had. I am proud of them.” He should be equally proud of himself. Aberdeen in this form are made of proper stuff.

Celtic have only a few days to rediscover their mettle.

We often complain that teams sit in against us at Celtic Park, but today it was a refreshing change to see a side be so adventurous against us and it made for quite the spectacle and a great advert for the Scottish game.It was a classic game of two halves. We should have been out of sight at halftime and were well worthy of our lead, but we seemed so disjointed in the second half and Aberdeen more than deserved a share of the spoils for their second-half showing.

However, we only have ourselves to blame. To drop two points with a two-goal lead, especially at home is inexcusable. Especially in the way we let Aberdeen back into the game through a mixture of individual errors and bad defending.

We also missed a host of chances on any other day we would have taken and the scoreline would have been so much different, but the fact is we didn’t and in the end it cost us two points, although it could’ve been much worse had VAR not correctly intervened after Aberdeen looked to have grabbed the lead.

At the end of the day though we are still top of the table due to a much better goal difference, and we remain unbeaten. We just need to put it down as a bad day at the office.

Aberdeen staged an incredible fightback from two down to earn a point and keep pace with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, as Jimmy Thelin’s dream start as manager continues.

Pre-match anticipation was heightened with the sides level on points at the top of the table with 100% domestic records, leading this to be billed as the game of the season so far.

It turned into just that. This was a thriller.

Celtic had looked in complete control after racing two goals clear.

Arne Engels had already been denied by the top of the crossbar by the time he gathered deep in his own half and released Kyogo Furuhashi down the right channel. Reo Hatate raced on to his cutback to gleefully fire home.

Who is Aberdeen’s new manager Thelin?
Published

A quick-fire second followed when Gavin Molloy failed to clear, and the ball fell kindly for Kyogo to thump home.

Suddenly, Aberdeen looked doomed. However, they responded and then some.

Thelin made changes at half-time, introducing Duk and Ester Sokler, and it paid off immediately as the latter raced beyond Liam Scales and finished brilliantly to haul Aberdeen back into contention.

The visitors found the leveller when captain Graeme Shinnie fired from the edge of the box and the ball deflected wildly and beyond Schmeichel.

There was still time for Aberdeen to have a winner ruled out by VAR after Slobodan Rubezic’s header deflected in off Duk’s hand.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Celtic were denied by goal-line blocks from goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov and Duk in a breathtaking finale.
Celtic let control slip

Celtic looked, at one stage, to be delivering the sort of performance that champions do.

Aberdeen had shown early promise, but the hosts appeared to have flexed their muscles with enough authority to send them on their way to another three points.

The failure to find a crucial third goal left the door slightly ajar and Thelin’s side smashed it down.

That will be of concern for home manager Brendan Rodgers heading back into Champions League action midweek.

Defensively, the imminent return of Cameron Carter-Vickers might help shut down the sort of chances Aberdeen generated. Celtic can ill-afford to be so exposed against Atalanta in Italy on Wednesday.

It is the first dropped points of what has been a dominant domestic start to the campaign as Aberdeen showed they will be a tough nut to crack.
Statement Aberdeen performance and result

The question was whether Thelin’s side could compete with the champions and send a signal that they might be capable of offering a serious title challenge.

On this evidence, the signs are very, very encouraging. There is a long way to go, of course, but Aberdeen fans left Celtic Park euphoric.

Their team started fairly brightly, but the script looked to be following familiar lines when they went two down. The response was magnificent.

Thelin talked pre-match about sticking to the identity and style they have been adopting and how the players would react if that was tested and they were put under pressure.

To come from two down was incredible. To have the chances to win it bordered on the unbelievable.

Yes, they rode their luck at times as Celtic frantically searched for a winner, but this was a statement performance and result.

For the doubters that presumed Aberdeen’s start might be a fleeting foray to the higher regions of the Premiership, this display lends significant weight to the idea that they have a serious manager with a determination in his squad to succeed.
What they said

‘Aberdeen good, but Celtic should have won’ – Brendan Rodgers

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “We are disappointed. We had a good control of the game in the first half. We could have had more goals. We get punished for a really careless period.

“We found our rhythm again. I think it was 32 shots. A mixture of some really good defending and great saves from the goalkeeper meant we could not find the winner.

“We should win the game today, there is no doubt about that.”

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin: “It was a really emotional game. We said at half-time, we have to calm down a little and come back to our strategy. We needed to find a way and to do that was to be a little more true to ourselves.

“I think we have an amazing squad and team spirit. We have had some late winners this season, showing our never give in mentality.

“Also, the away support helped us to get this energy.”

Scottish Premiership: Celtic v Aberdeen

Date: Saturday 19 October Kick-off: 15:00 BST Venue: Celtic Park, Glasgow.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says he has been impressed with Aberdeen’s perfect start but is unsure if they will compete with his side for the Scottish Premiership title.

Celtic lead Aberdeen on goal difference at the top of the league after both teams won their first seven matches, as they prepare to face each other in Glasgow on Saturday.

Jimmy Thelin’s side have won all 13 of their games this season but the Swede has said it is “way too early” to talk of Aberdeen as title contenders, and Rodgers agrees.

“I don’t know, is the honest answer,” the Celtic boss said when asked if he thinks the Dons can maintain their form across the whole campaign.

“It’s only seven games in. There’s such a long, long way to go in the season. It’s how you deal with the bumps in the road as well, which will always determine where you finish and how you end up.”

Rodgers added he has been impressed with Thelin’s impact so far, saying he is clearly “a very good coach”.

“They look to have real clarity in how they play, both with the ball and against the ball,” he added. “You win seven straight games in your league, then you’ve done really, really well.”

Celtic will be without Greg Taylor against Aberdeen and Atalanta next Wednesday in the Champions League, but defender Cameron Carter-Vickers has a chance of returning from a toe injury.

However Rodgers says Celtic do not want to “push him back in too early” given his injury history.
Rodgers warns fans about pyrotechnics

This week Celtic were fined nearly £17,000 by Uefa after some supporters used pyrotechnics at their recent Champions League defeat at Borussia Dortmund.

The club were also hit with a suspended ban on selling tickets to away fans for one European game, should there be more breaches of the rules by supporters in the next two seasons.

Rodgers urged fans not to land the club in more trouble, stressing pyrotechnics are not necessary for supporters to generate a good atmosphere.

“If you do keep doing it, you’re showing that you don’t really care,” Rodgers said.

“You don’t really care for the team. You don’t care for the support and you don’t care for your club because the club ultimately are getting fined as well.

“So if you keep doing it, you’re clearly showing that you’re actually not really worried about your own club, you’re worried about yourself. So it doesn’t need it.”

Brilliant counter attacks from both sides. There was mistakes, but there was so much passion and energy from the players.

But the introduction of Duk and Ester Sokler at half-time changed the game, with Sokler and Graeme Shinnie goals bringing Aberdeen back on level terms by the hour mark.

A chaotic end played out at Celtic Park – which included a disallowed Duk goal for handball and inspired defending as deep as 13 minutes into stoppage-time.

Celtic hold onto first-place, Aberdeen stay second. Both are level on points and remain unbeaten.

There’s been a lot to like about Aberdeen’s approach, but Celtic will feel they deserve this lead and have shown quality at key moments to seize the initiative.

The sense of anticipation coming into this game and into this stadium was near tangible. Both with 100% league records, something has to give.

Celtic have been dominant, with most performances at a very high level. Just one goal conceded in seven games. It’s the stiffest of early tests for Jimmy Thelin’s troops.

The big question is whether this Aberdeen squad can handle this challenge? They’ve really impressed and found ways to win even when not performing, but it’s a rarity that they come here and leave with the points.

If they do so today, Dons fans will be in orbit. A point would also be a significant statement.

Celtic v Aberdeen (15:00)

Well, top spot in the league, of course. But also a near-decade old streak ready to be matched.

Aberdeen were the last Premiership outfit to win the first eight matches of a Scottish top-flight during the 2015-16 season, while Celtic last achieved the feat at the beginning of the 2010-11 campaign.

Evading a draw will see one of the two sides remarkably reach the feat once more.

Brendan Rodgers makes one change from the Celtic side that came from behind to defeat Ross County before the international break.

The single change takes place in attack, with Kyogo Furuhashi replacing Adam Idah at centre-forward.

Cameron Carter-Vickers fails in a late fitness bid to make the squad, while fellow defender Greg Taylor remains out.

Celtic v Aberdeen (15:00)

No title will be decided during game-week eight, but this remains a colossal clash at Celtic Park today.

Celtic and Aberdeen face off as they both vie to maintain their perfect league records at the peak of the Scottish Premiership.

The Dons have, indeed, failed to beat this afternoon’s hosts in any of their last 25 attempts. Could they put an end to that horrid run under the direction of Jimmy Thelin?
