Summary

“It doesn’t matter how far ahead you are or how well you’ve done previously, when you lose a game of football, it hurts. And that’s what’s good about this group. They understand that and they know what the expectation level is here. We want to win every single game, try and give the maximum level that we can and then just see where we get to at the end of the season.”
Callum McGregor pre match

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Scotland: “It was a disappointing result from our perspective. We had lots of control in the first 40 minutes, then we give away a needless goal from a counter attack. “We concede and that gives them impetus heading into the second half. We go in front but we give away two really disappointing goals that we should deal with. “I give credit to the players, they kept going. But for our standard, that second half has to be better. “We were too passive. Too slow. With the ball, just not aggressive enough. “Tonight was about doing the basics of the game well, and we did not do that well enough.”

Dundee manager Tony Docherty tells BBC Scotland: “Immensely proud, but the overriding feeling is one of disappointment. I thought we done enough to win the match. “I watched Celtic put on Kuhn, Engels, Palma. I’ve asked Lyall Cameron to get off his sickbed to play, Finlay Robertson has not trained, Garza has had to come off. To put in that level of performance against that opposition is bordering on heroic. “We made a Champions League team wobble. We sensed it, we went for it and gave everything to win that match. I thought my players deserved that tonight.”

Dundee defender Aaron Donnelly tells BBC Scotland: “It was a great performance from us. We stuck to our game plan. Really resilient without the ball and we had a good shape. We really dug in towards the end. “Celtic is top opposition with top players. We showed tonight how we can compete in this league and climb up it. “We were really disappointed not to get three points and that shows the way this club is going.”

Joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki:
All eyes are really on next Wednesdays key game in the Champions League, with Celtic having what should now be an unassailable lead in the league. That said, Dundee did pull off a draw v Sevco last week so due care still needed.

And after a bright start, on the which Celtic really could have killed the game off, Celtic let Dundee into the game. Despite Celtic leading twice, Dundee fought back to almost take the three points only for an unarguable penalty late in injury time to gift Celtic the share of the points.

Some players were maligned in particular Trusty, Idah & Bernardo for a poor performance, but Yang finally grabbed his first goal for the side this season to grab some praise for a change. Even McGregor has been getting some flak of late, and there are now some concerns over the team for next Wednesday v YB of Berne.

Credit to Dundee who gave Celtic a strong challenge and their first goal was a top drawer counter attack goal. It made up from seeing their former captain McCowan now at Celtic opening the scoring.

We can’t win all our games, but still Celtic grabbed a point. A good game to watch for the neutrals in a thriller. Tinhat on, but I found today’s match entertaining to watch by the the ebb and flow of the scoreline.

KrisKujawa on Bluesky: The funniest thing though is Dundee have taken points off Sevco last week and Celtic this week, both games they could even have won, but you just know they’ll blow it in the derby against United on Monday!

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has lauded praise on Greg Taylor, who makes his 200th appearance for Celtic this evening. “He has been absolutely brilliant and dedicated himself to the club,” he told BBC Sport Scotland. “He’s given so much. He’s been a big part of our success. It is a wonderful occasion for him. I’m really pleased for him. “He has a professional mentality and he gives his all. It’s all you can ask of any player.”

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · What a game, travesty for Dundee that they didn’t hang on, Celtic were absolutely appalling in that second half, so many of their players nowhere near the standard required tonight, but Dundee are ravaged by injuries and bullied them all over the pitch, great entertainment.

Leo McGarry of KDS: A bad day at the office but they are becoming too frequent.

We normally, see a huge improvement after half time and a well deserved reaming, and/or after substitutions. Neither made a huge difference tonight. Though to claim all subs were bad is ridiculous, as Kuehn looked like he might win the game himself.

People saying we were cruising, I’d actually say some of our lot were dialling it in. Clearly expected to win easily, as did most on here tbf. But to know how good this lot can be and to stand back and let them back into the game, twice is disgracefully and unprofessional.

I thought Dundee were tremendous tonight. Really went for it, didn’t lose focus unlike us, including keep going all game. What a job their manager is doing, especially raising their game for bigger teams. Thoroughly deserved a point, maybe more.

However, our ability to be bullied, especially in midfield, is a massive weakness. I like our midfield, and know it wins us so many games and points, but it is soft as shampooe half of the time. This need fixing, this window for me. We could easily lose the two CL games because of our lack of steel, balls and gumption in the middle. YB isn’t a gimme at all.

Are the players over confident? Thinking about the CL games post group? Another treble? A few of them need dropping tbh, or some other tough love.

Listening to Docherty, and his pride in his team, for playing when sick, out of position, stands in contrast to our total lack of performance and professionalism today.

Anyway, let’s keep it in perspective and especially recognise a very good opponent. But stop with the over confidence and complacency. Immediately.

As someone else said, we need the “We never stop” mantra coming back and being our MO.

DUNDEE…3

(Adewumi 41, Carter-Vickers og 54, Donnelly 78)

CELTIC…3

(McCowan 5, Yang 53, Engels 93)

The champions had to settle for a draw against Dundee at Dens Park tonight after a six goal thriller and a late equaliser from the spot from Arne Engels.

Only a few minutes in to the match, the hosts had an opportunity to take the lead when Aaron Donnelly built up to take a long throw in from the Celts’ right-hand side. The ball seemed to slip from Donnelly’s grasp as he made to throw it, which caught the Celtic defence out and gave Simon Murray a chance to score, but thankfully Kasper Schmeichel was on hand to prevent the goal.

But before the match was even five minutes old, the Celts had the lead. A deep ball in to the back post from Greg Taylor found the head of Luke McCowan, and, on his first return to Dens Park since leaving Dundee for the Hoops, McCowan cushioned a header towards the far corner, away from Trevor Carson and in to the back of the net.

In the 18th minute, the Celts had a massive chance to double the lead when Kyogo, who had burst up the right wing was picked out by Yang, who sent a perfectly weighted ball in his direction. Kyogo flashed the ball across the box towards Adam Idah, but the Irishman was unable to make any connection.

Idah then had another chance five minutes later, this time the ball was sent in by Alistair Johnston, giving Idah a chance to header it towards goal, with only the crossbar denying him on that occasion.

McCowan’s eyes lit up again just after the half-hour mark when he carved a bit of space for himself on the edge of the box after some lovely passing from the Celts to keep the ball from the Dundee defence. McCowan tried to fire his effort in to the bottom corner, but Carson was wise to the idea and was able to gather.

The Celts completely dominated the first half, limiting Dundee to nothing in their forward areas and keeping them penned in to their own half throughout.

It came as a bit of a surprise therefore when, with their first real attack of the match which came in the 40th minute, they managed to find an equaliser as Adewumi burst forward with the ball and found the bottom corner of the net

There were no changes for either side at half time and with seven minutes of the second half gone, the Celts took the lead once again. Kyogo picked up the ball on the right-hand side and swung it in to the area where Yang was lurking and he made no mistake as he headed it beyond Carson.

The Celtic celebrations had hardly subsided when the game was levelled again. Dundee broke forward on their right wing, with Josh Mulligan cutting in to the area with the ball at feet. He attempted to cut the ball back to the penalty spot, but a deflection from Cameron Carter-Vickers sent it beyond Schmeichel to make the score 2-2.

The hosts then had two chances in quick succession which lifted the home support and gave them belief that they could take something from the game.

Firstly, Adewumi shot from distance, with his effort swerving just wide of the post. Then Ingram had a chance from inside the box, but his header crept wide of the target.

On the hour mark, Brendan Rodgers rang the changes, replacing McCowan, Bernardo and Idah with Hatate, Engels and Kuhn.

Whilst the Celts looked for a way to find the lead again, Dundee continued to press forward and in the 78th minute, they took the lead for the first time in the match, with Aaron Donnelly finding the target with a header from an in-swinging corner from Finlay Robertson.

With the game in stoppage time, the Celts were awarded a penalty after Sylla blocked Nicolas Kuhn’s effort on goal with his hand. Arne Engels stepped up to the spot and buried his penalty to level the game.

There was no time for any more chances for either side, with the game ending in a 3-3 draw. Next up for the Celts is a Scottish Cup tie against Kilmarnock at Celtic Park on Saturday.

Six-goal thriller has Dens Park convulsing

So it is 13,260 days and counting. Dundee’s long wait for a win over Celtic at Dens Park goes on in the cruellest of denouements for the dark blues.

September 26, 1988 remains the last time the Dee were able to celebrate a win over their visitors from Celtic Park. That autumn day, Tommy Coyne netted the only goal. They’ve paid some penance since.

This one will hurt, though. Behind not once but twice, Dundee showed commendable spirit to level and then lead going into stoppage time. But Celtic – as sloppy as they were – so often find a way to evade defeat. This time it was a 92nd-minute penalty from Engels to rescue a 3-3 draw in the sort of dramatic match you never want to end.

Early on, this had the gait of a mightily uncomfortable evening for Tony Docherty’s men. Former Dundee darling Luke McCowan, on his first return to Dens Park since moving to Celtic last summer, opened the scoring on five minutes with a delicious cushioned header and Celtic appeared capable of scoring at will before Dundee levelled just before the break. After the interval, we were treated to a humdinger.

Celtic were uncharacteristically sloppy. Their foundation in Cameron Carter-Vickers rocked under the threat of a Dundee tremor in the thundering duo of Simon Murray and Seun Adewumi, while his sidekick Auston Trusty was uncomfortable throughout. Such a slip will likely do little to harm Celtic’s title charge but they have shown some Premiership cracks since the turn of the year. Nevertheless, they are 16 points clear at the top.

McCowan’s goal on five minutes – created by a lovely Greg Taylor cross on his 200th Celtic appearance – ought to have been added to by Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo. Idah’s 12-game barren run goes on, the Irishman once again an impotent force and hooked on the hour mark. Both missed excellent chances before Adewumi showed the composure Idah currently lacks after a rapid counter attack.

Stung by Dundee’s leveller, Celtic raced out of the traps after the break and re-established their lead when Kyogo Furuhashi’s low cross was turned into the air by Trevor Carson, with Yang Hyun-Jun on hand to loop a header into the unguarded net.

Unperturbed, Dundee replied a minute later. Josh Mulligan’s low ball towards the six-yard box looked dangerous but Carter-Vickers ensured it would end in a goal by diverting the ball past an already committed Kasper Schmeichel.

With the tails up, Dundee pushed on. Adewumi planted a header just the wrong side of the post. Rodgers called for a cavalry charge on the hour mark, with subs Reo Hatate, Engels and Nicolas Kuhn summoned.

They did not halt the flow of the game. Dundee wanted this. The clock struck 79 minutes. Corner-kick. Robertson whipped in the mother of all deliveries to the back post and Aaron Donnelly rose to nod his approval high past Schmeichel. Bedlam in the home end.

Now to hold on. Dens Park convulsed. Five minutes of stoppage time were signalled. You could sense it – it’s what Celtic do. Kuhn shimmied into the box, unleashed a fierce drive that was blocked by the arm of Mo Sylla. Clear penalty. Engels held his nerve and popped Dundee’s balloon. Thirteen thousand, two hundred and sixty days and counting.

Arne Engels’ stoppage-time penalty rescued a point for runaway Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic in a six-goal epic against Dundee.

Tony Docherty’s home side had to fight back twice, showing outstanding character to find two levellers before Aaron Donnelly’s thumping header looked like it was going to secure Dundee a first win over Celtic in 24 years and a first at Dens since 1988.

But Mo Sylla’s late handball from a Nicolas Kuhn shot meant Engels could send Trevor Carson the wrong way from the spot in an incredible encounter.

It started with Luke McCowan opening the scoring on his return to Dens Park, the former Dundee captain heading in superbly from a Greg Taylor cross.

Brendan Rodgers’ men failed to double their lead through chances for Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo, who headed off the crossbar, and that allowed Dundee to equalise when Oluwaseun Adewumi finished an electric counter attack.

Yang Hyun-jun then nodded Celtic back in front after Carson parried Kyogo Furuhashi’s dangerous cross towards the back post.

But Docherty’s side were again level just a minute later when Cameron Carter-Vickers diverted the superb Josh Mulligan’s cross into his own net.

Celtic were rattled for large spells thereafter as a young and fearless Dundee side pushed for a winner, which they thought they had through Donnelly’s back-post header in the 78th minute.

But Engels’ penalty means Celtic’s huge lead at the top stretches to 16 points, while Dundee move to within two points of sixth-placed Hibernian.

Dundee fuel top-six bid with fine display

Less than a week after earning an impressive point against Rangers at Dens, this result and performance will only fuel Dundee’s bid to achieve a top-six finish for the second season running.

Docherty’s starting line-up included two teenagers and seven players aged 23 and under, but they were fearless in their approach after riding their luck for the majority of the first half.

Near misses from Ethan Ingram, Finlay Robertson and Adewumi, who continues to look a real find, had Celtic rocking throughout the second period.

And Mulligan played an integral part in that with relentless running and quality on the ball.

Much has been made about Lyall Cameron’s contract situation – with the midfielder reportedly a target for Rangers – but Mulligan, whose current deal is also up at the end of the season, will surely be attracting interest in this form.
Away displays a concern for Celtic?

Luke McCowan’s header gave Celtic an early lead at Dundee on the midfielder’s return to Dens Park

A difficult one to analyse for Celtic, who are still on course to win the title by a huge margin despite dropping two points.

Perhaps a concern for Rodgers will be his side’s recent away form. They have now won just one of their last four on the road following a draws against both Dundee clubs, defeat at Rangers and Saturday’s victory at Ross County.

That slight, slight blip away from home will almost certainly not hurt their pursuit of another Premiership crown, but Rodgers will be keen to address that, plus their slackness in defence, with big Champions League games on the horizon.

The Celtic boss will also be disappointed by his team’s inability to put the game to bed before Dundee grabbed their first equaliser, with Idah’s form a worry.

The former Norwich striker, who failed to get on the end of a dangerous Kyogo cross at close range with Celtic one up, is now without a goal in 12 games and was removed on the hour after failing to have a notable impact on the match.
What they said

Dundee manager Tony Docherty: “I’m immensely proud, but the overriding feeling is one of disappointment. I thought we did enough to win.

“I watched Celtic put on Kuhn, Engels, Palma… I’ve asked Lyall Cameron to get off his sickbed to play; Finlay Robertson hasn’t trained; Cesar Garza had to come off. To put in that level of performance against that opposition is bordering on heroic.

“We made a Champions League team wobble. We sensed it, we went for it and gave everything to win that match. I thought my players deserved that tonight.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “We had lots of control in the first 40 minutes, then we give away a needless goal from a counter attack. That gives them impetus.

“I give credit to the players, they kept going. But for our standard, that second half has to be better. We were too passive. Too slow. Just not aggressive enough.

“Tonight was about doing the basics well, and we did not do that well enough.”
