Summary

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Scotland: “Bitterly disappointed just in terms of the start of the game.

“It’s happened too many times. I’ve seen a trend now with us, and it will be interesting between now and the end of the season in terms of mentality. We didn’t start the game how we wanted.

“We talked about being a top team and having talent but also having drive, desire and ambition to win and having spirt, and too many of our players have been too comfortable.

“There’s no excuse, we also have to give a big, big credit to St Johnstone. We were disappointed in the game in terms of our attitude. Their keeper has made some brilliant saves.

“The first-half mentality and attitude is disappointing. It’s around comfort; comfortable is not a physical place and if you get comfortable, you don’t do the things physically needed.

“Whereas St Johnstone, I felt, ran for their lives. They thoroughly deserved the win. It’s about your mindset, and that is something that concerns me.”

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · 4h ST JOHNSTONE 1-0 CELTIC Tremendous win for the Saintees, monumental three points in their quest to stay up, don’t think Celtic did anywhere near enough to earn a point, had all the ball but they could cure insomnia at times, and have been phoning it in for months. St Johnstone winning is really good for the league in terms of the relegation battle, Kilmarnock & Dundee would’ve banked on gaining 3 points on them this weekend after yesterday’s results, but they’re still well in this, really like what Valakari is doing in Perth, good manager.
Baffled by Lennon & McFadden talking about how well Celtic played 2nd half, took them ~40 minutes to get anything on target, pass, pass, pass, recycle, pass pass pass, recycle… kidding themselves on if they thought that was good. Being better than 1st half isn’t an achievement
See if Rodgers wasn’t “overly surprised” by Celtic’s performance today, why is he continually picking the same starting XI, Kühn, Engels, Schluup, Hatate & Johnston have been off it for weeks, give our take the odd wee spell in specific games. Freshen it up if you feel that way

@hailhailhistory: Celtic will still win the League but that was again poor.Three defeats in six League games would not ordinarily be the form of Champions.
The players’ mindset is wrong, playing without urgency. It definitely needs fixed ahead of the Scottish Cup. Give the opposition three stands, get a big crowd, and take the three points, what’s not to like if you’re St Johnstone? Also thought it was the loudest I’ve heard St Johsntone fans at McDiarmid Park, bunching them all in together definitely adds to the atmosphere, IMO

David McWeeney ‪@abhoysvoice.bsky.social‬ “Nobody will remember this performance when we’re lifting the trophy.” Ok. But you know when we would remember it?  If we’re looking back at these exact warning signs we didn’t heed, if they start catching up with us.

‪Bellshilltim‬ ‪@bellshilltim.bsky.social‬ · 4h Today shouldn’t really be a surprise, we’ve been poor for weeks, slow safety first multiple touch football, don’t know if players have switched off but it’s no good enough #celticfc

pre match stats:
St. Johnstone are winless in their last 31 meetings with Celtic in all competitions (D4 L27) since a 2-1 league win in May 2016 under Tommy Wright.

Celtic have won each of their last 15 away games at St. Johnstone in all competitions by an aggregate score of 48-9. Only at Partick Thistle (18 – Nov 1995 to Jan 2020) and Queen’s Park (19 – Oct 1904 to Sep 1923) have they ever enjoyed a longer away winning run against a particular opponent.

St. Johnstone have won just one of their last six league games (D2 L3), failing to score at all in both of their last two. The Saints last went three successive league matches without scoring in August 2023.
Celtic’s 3-0 win over Hearts last time out was their 20th Scottish Premiership clean sheet of the season in 31 games. Only in 1913-14 have they ever reached 20 clean sheets sooner from the start of a league campaign (27th match).

31% of Daizen Maeda’s Scottish Premiership goals have come in 2025 (11/35). The Japanese forward is looking to become the first player to score in six successive league appearances for Celtic since Odsonne Édouard in February 2021.

ST JOHNSTONE…1

(Balodis 4)

CELTIC…0

It was a disappointing afternoon for Celtic who, despite dominating the match against St Johnstone in Perth, found themselves on the end of a 1-0 defeat thanks to an early goal from the home side.

Within the first minute, the champions had their first attempt after Daizen Maeda showed his tenacity to win the ball from Zach Mitchell which allowed Arne Engels to fire a shot at goal, but Andy Fisher was able to keep it out.

But despite the Celts’ quick start, it was the home side who opened the scoring after Balodis found the bottom corner with a header from six yards out after Graham Carey had swung a cross in from the right wing.

With just over 12 minutes played, the Hoops almost grabbed the equaliser as Maeda’s shot across the face of goal reached Nicolas Kühn on the goal line, but incredibly the St Johnstone defence were able to clear the ball to safety.

Viljami Sinisalo was called in to action in the 20th minute when Duke-McKenna hit a shot from distance which looked to be swerving in to the far corner, but the Finnish keeper was quick to react with a diving save which dealt with the danger.

At the other end of the pitch 10 minutes later, Jota caught sight of goal from distance and hit a shot which seemed destined to drop in just under the crossbar, but the home side’s keeper got his fingertips to the effort and pushed it over the bar for a corner.

It proved to be a frustrating end to the half for Celtic, with no clear cut opportunities to speak of against a St Johnstone side who were defending resolutely and making every goal kick or throw in last as long as possible.

Brendan Rodgers made two changes at half time, bringing Yang on for Nicolas Kuhn and Greg Taylor on for Jeffrey Schlupp

And the Celts began the second half with a determination to put the hosts under pressure from the off and that pressure almost paid off in the 55th minute when Engels picked out Reo Hatate in the box, but the Japanese midfielder’s strike, which had left the keeper rooted to his line, crashed off the post.

Hatate had an even better opportunity five minutes later when Jota cut the ball back towards the penalty spot from the by-line, but this time his strike sailed well over the bar.

With just shy of 70 minutes played, the Hoops came close to finding the equaliser after a brilliant piece of attacking play from Callum McGregor, who slipped a pass through to Yang in the box, but the winger’s ball to the back post had too much on it for Jota to reach.

In the 77th minute, the home side broke forward for their first attack of the second half, with Kimpioka driving towards the Celtic penalty area with the ball, but Auston Trusty did well to get back and halt the attack.

With 10 minutes left to go, James Forrest looked certain to score from close range after a dangerous ball across the box from Luke McCowan, but the St Johnstone keeper was able to block the shot and prevent the goal.

In the 90th minute of the match, Adam Idah found himself with an opportunity to shoot from a tight angle inside the box, but the Irishman’s effort hit the side netting.

Brendan Rodgers and his side will now turn their attentions to next weekend’s league match against Kilmarnock at Celtic Park, the final match before the split.

Brendan Rodgers disappointed but credits Saints

Celtic fell behind early at St Johnstone and despite having the bulk of the play in the remainder of the game, they couldn’t break down a resolute home side who held out while also threatening on occasion at the other end.

Brendan Rodgers gave credit to St Johnstone but he was frustrated with the outcome of the game when the Hoops have a fourth successive title well within their sights.

The manager said following the 1-0 defeat: “I’m very disappointed with the performance and the result. We didn’t start the game well, which was a concern.

“We’ve had that a number of times, that’s just about mentality, that’s about ambition in the game.

“They started more aggressive, won some duels and we didn’t deal with them at all.

“In the second half we came out and obviously we dominated the game and we create opportunities, the keeper made some great saves, but it’s a mind-set that I don’t like.”

The manager, though, refused to throw his players under the bus and added: “This is on everyone, we have to look at that as a team.

“Everything we’ve ever done has been a collective, and that’s firstly on me, so I need to think about in terms of my teaching, my inspiration, my motivation.

“Am I doing the right things to get them to that point? So firstly I look at myself.”

The Celts, particularly in the second half created a number of chances, enough certainly to return to Glasgow with full points.

The Irishman said: “I expect us to take those opportunities. We got into some really good areas, and, like I said, it was a combination of just not that clinical edge to the game and their keeper making some fantastic saves, and their players making some great blocks.

‘And I also want to give St Johnstone a huge amount of credit, because you’re bottom of the league, you’re fighting for your life, and I just felt that their fight was greater than ours at the beginning of the game’

“That got them in front and we couldn’t respond.”

The Celts can get back on track next week when Kilmarnock visit Celtic Park and the manager said: “It’s about getting your mentality right before you even kick a ball.

“We’ve had one or two games where we’re waiting for the game, and that worries me when I look at the squad.

“The squad have shown great mental strength over the course of the season, but have lacked that ambition in games, and, especially today, there’s no excuse – we had three sides of the ground full.

“And with your own supporters pushing you on expecting, maybe that’s something I have to look at – expectation versus underdog.

“Because everyone can play as an underdog, but when you’re a Celtic player you have to deal with both, you’ve got to deal with the underdog in the Champions League at times, and then you have to deal with the expectation at home and being the top team.

“That’s something that has really disappointed me today.”

St Johnstone have given themselves a “fighting chance” of avoiding relegation, says manager Simo Valakari, after they defeated Celtic to deny the reigning champions the chance to clinch another Scottish Premiership title next Saturday.

Celtic knew a win at McDiarmid Park would allow them to secure a fourth successive league championship in front of their own fans against Kilmarnock next weekend.

But Daniels Balodis’ thumping early header from Graham Carey’s teasing free-kick – combined with a brilliant defensive display – brought the basement side back to within five points of Dundee.

Celtic may yet finish next weekend confirmed as champions if they beat Kilmarnock and Rangers lose at Aberdeen the following day.

But Latvian Balodis’ first goal for St Johnstone has thwarted their hopes – for now – of doing it under their own steam and in front of their own fans.

“My players wanted to show that they are good players and we are a good team,” said Valakari. “There’s no better place to show that than against Celtic at your home stadium. Very proud of the performance.

“We give ourselves the fighting chance. Where does it take us? We don’t know but we need to stay there until the end. We keep going.”

Everything you need to know about Celtic

The early goal certainly gave the Perth side a spring in their step. And Celtic’s response was predictable. But their failure to get back into this this one was anything but.

In-form Daizen Maeda was the first to have a go, his strike being tipped by goalkeeper Andy Fisher towards the back post when Stephen Duke-McKenna nipped in front of Nicolas Kuhn to make a vital intervention.

Not content with his goal-saving heroics, Duke-McKenna proved a threat up the other end, with his swerving shot pushed past by Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo.

The visitors continued to search for the equaliser – Reo Hatate hit a post with a early in the second period and should have done better later on when he blazed over.

At the other end, Benji Kimpioka used his physicality to good effect, as St Johnstone created one or two chances. And Victor Griffith came close to adding a second, his deflected strike looping over.

James Forrest had Celtic’s best chance, but his close-range effort was saved by the excellent Fisher, who also kept out an effort by Luke McCowan.

The Perth side held on and their survival bid will continue against Dundee United at Tannadice on Saturday before the post-split fixtures ensue.

St Johnstone will meet Celtic again in their Scottish Cup semi-final on 20 April.
Title wait for Celtic after frustrating day

Maybe Celtic were shocked by St Johnstone taking an early lead and frustrated by some brilliant defending, but they were just off it in Perth.

They just could not find an end product, with Maeda, Hatate and Jota not their usual sparky selves or at their clinical best.

It won’t derail Celtic as they close in on another title, of course, but the fact the loss has delayed any party will not please Brendan Rodgers in the slightest.

He demands intensity and pace in his side’s play and, while he got that in patches, Celtic didn’t use it well.
Bold Perth side rewarded for bravery

St Johnstone’s set-up was bold and their bravery was rewarded.

Not only did they take the lead against a team who had previously put them to the sword this season with an aggregate of 10-0, but they also defended the predictable Celtic response brilliantly.

Celtic piled on pressure in the second half, but St Johnstone held firm, while Fisher made some vital saves.

The points could be vital too as they try to stave off the threat of relegation after 16 years in the top flight. It was a brilliant display and one that psychologically could be huge for the league run-in.

Although, it must be a tad frustrating for manager Simo Valakari that performances like this have been so rare this term. Still, he will be focusing on the positives and hoping the result will spark something.

Celtic mentality ‘concerning’ for manager Rodgers

St Johnstone manager Simo Valakari: “There were a lot of good performances, starting from the striker all the way, of course, to our goalkeeper. You need in these matches to make saves and Andy Fisher made those saves.

“Our players, mentally, they were switched on all the time. Early goal helps because then you have even more to hang on to. Our players, they can defend.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “Bitterly disappointed in the start of the game. It’s happened too many times. I’ve seen a trend now with us, and it will be interesting between now and the end of the season in terms of mentality.

“We talked about being a top team and having talent but also having drive, desire and ambition to win and having spirt, and too many of our players have been too comfortable.

“There’s no excuse, we also have to give a big, big credit to St Johnstone. We were disappointed in the game in terms of our attitude..”

Celtic’s procession to a fourth successive Scottish Premiership title may only have been delayed, but it was clear that Brendan Rodgers’ assessment of defeat at St Johnstone as “bitterly disappointing” was about more than just the result.

A win against a team adrift at the bottom of the division would have set up the chance of clinching the trophy at home to Kilmarnock on Saturday lunchtime.

That scenario is now null and void, although a Celtic win followed by a Rangers loss at Aberdeen the following day would still add up to a title win.

Defeat in Perth was Celtic’s fourth in an otherwise impressive league campaign, but all four have come since January and featured the concession of an early goal – something highlighted by Rodgers.

“It’s happened too many times,” he said. “I’ve seen a trend now with us, and it will be interesting between now and the end of the season in terms of mentality.

“We didn’t start the game how we wanted. The first-half mentality and attitude is disappointing. It’s about your mindset, and that is something that concerns me.”

Former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner, on Sportsound punditry duty, suggested it would be a “real, real disappointment for the fans” but what went wrong?

Celtic must wait for title after St Johnstone shock

Latest Celtic news, analysis & fan views

‘Warning to Celtic players’

Rodgers gradually withdrew his starting front three of Nicolas Kuhn, Daizen Maeda and Jota in Perth and also replaced £11m signing Arne Engels at McDiarmid Park.

But their replacements could not make the difference either.

“The first half was poor,” said Bonner. “There was really no penetration. Did we see Maeda running in behind today? No.

“Kuhn was right off it. That’s a bit of a worry for me. Jota did a bit but not enough.

“They did create enough chances in that second half at least to get a draw but they weren’t able to put the ball in the back of the net.”

The relative dip in Celtic’s results in the second half of the season, having dropped just four points from August through December, is arguably down to their own consistency.

When they were beaten for the first time domestically this season at Rangers on 2 January, the gap between the sides was reduced to 11 points.

It was hardly the re-igniting of a title race because there has never really been a title race this season.

Celtic could not find a way through against St Johnstone

And Rodgers commented: “We talked about being a top team and having talent but also having drive, desire and ambition to win and having spirit, and too many of our players have been too comfortable.

“It’s around comfort; comfortable is not a physical place and if you get comfortable, you don’t do the things physically needed.”

Whether Celtic are crowned champions next weekend or later in the campaign, the “trend” Rodgers pointed to is something he will be eager to eradicate as his side bid for a domestic treble.

Sunday’s conquerors St Johnstone await the Scottish Cup holders in their 20 April semi-final, with Aberdeen and Hearts contesting the other semi the day before.

And former Premiership midfielder and Sportsound pundit Stephen McGinn asked: “How do you criticise a team that are only a couple of games away from winning the league?

“They’re going for a domestic treble but that’s three defeats in their last seven.

“There’s a warning to those Celtic players that there’s a semi-final in a couple of weeks against the same team and they’re going to come with the same attitude, organisation.

“They aren’t absolutely free flowing at the business end of the season so I think Rodgers will just have a reminder to them there’s a lot of work to do.”
