Match Report
Celtic were the better team on Saturday. They had most of the pressure, they played the better moves and they had more shots at goal.
Unfortunately, Dundee United cashed in with two st-pieces to put Celtic two down.
The first came after 27 minutes of Celtic pressure, when United broke upfield and Aitken used illegal means to stop the advance.
Bannon took the free-kick to Narey, who in turn sent the ball to Kirkwood, who in turn sent a 20-yard drive towards the Celtic goal. Pat Bonner seemed to have the shot covered, but a cruel deflection beat himand gave the home side the lead.
With the score still at 1-0, Celtic really should have been given the perfect chance to equalise. McGarvey had broken into the boxand as he pushed the ball past Hamish McAlpine and went full flight to catch it, the keeper caught his foot and sent him tumbling to the ground. The referee decided, however, not to award a penalty.
In the 63rd minute United strengthened their lead. From another free-kick, Bannon flighted the ball to Gough who headed home.
Celtic’s goal came in the 84th minute, after McClair had replaced Whittaker, Sinclair sent in a cross for Jim Melrose to head into goal.
