Match Report
Jim Dobbin opened Celtic’s scoring after eight minutes, Roy Aitken closed it with twenty minutes to go. In between, Jim Melrose scored.
Those are the facts in a match that was always within Celtic’s grasp and one in which they did all that was needed to collect full points in their league challenge.
Paul McStay was given a rest to help him overcome flu symptoms and in his place Celtic fielded his former Scottish Youth team midfield partner Jim Dobbin.
After eight minutes Dobbin made his mark on the game and gave the fans something to cheer. From good play between MacLeod and McGarvey, Melrose was given the ball and his cross from the left was met by the teenager and headed past Roy Baines in the home side’s goal.
Celtic stayed in command for the rest of the first half, but did not go further ahead until three minutes after the break. Melrose put the ball away after some good combining from midfielders MacLeod and Burns had beaten the Saints’ defence.
Throughout the match both McClair and McGarvey troubled the defence and they looked as though they could make life even harder for the home team if they had to.
Roy Aitken’s closing goal on the 70 minute mark was a powerful header with the big man out-jumping the field.
Celtic used both substitutes with Willie McStay replacing Murdo MacLeod and John Halpin replacing Brian McClair both after the scoring had ended.
Burns and McGarvey were booked, as were two St Johnstone players
