Trivia
- Celtic played in a specially made strip of yellow shirts, green shorts and yellow socks. This was because both the first and second strips clashed with Rapid's jerseys. Celtic only played in it one more time, in a 6-3 friendly defeat to Hibs at Easter Road in January 1985.
- Alan McInally is sent off and Danny McGrain is booked and misses the second leg.
Review
This game was played in a nasty and bad tempered atmosphere. Kienast's first half assault on McGarvey caused the Celtic striker's withdrawal and caused further ill feeling. McClair equalised Rapid's opener although the Austrians regained the lead before McInally was harshly sent off in 76 minutes.
Celtic rued Krankl's goal with only minutes left.
