ENGROSSING and always exciting, the season's opening Old Firm skirmish also had plenty of good football to commend it.Rangerswill no doubt consider themselves hard done by, butCeltic'sobstinacy and courage were such that they did not deserve to leave Ibrox empty-handed.
Much of the credit for gaining a valuable point must go to Pat Bonner, theCelticgoalkeeper. The big Irishman has had an indifferent time recently but he chose the perfect occasion to display his ability as a saver of shots. Trevor Steven, Pieter Huistra and Terry Hurlock had good cause to curse Bonner during the 90 minutes as he deniedRangersmore than one goal.

There is no doubt thatRangersretained most of the possession and created far more chances. With five men enveloping the middle of the park, they enjoyed numerical superiority. On recent visits to IbroxCeltic'sbottle has gone when affairs have turned against them but it remained intact yesterday.Celtichad the pleasure of opening the scoring. But where previously such a development merely hastened their downfall, this time it matured into a handy insurance policy. Terry Butcher fouled Dariusz Dziekanowski but the resultant free kick by John Collins was perfectly directed towards Derek Whyte in theRangers'penalty area. The defender's downward header eluded Chris Woods's dive.

Debutants often find the atmosphere in this match intimidating but Hurlock, the former Millwall man, charged about to good effect and was rewarded with an equaliser in the 65th minute. TheCelticdefence failed properly to cope with a Gary Stevens cross and the ball fell to Hurlock 20 yards out. His finish swept inside a post, revealing a dent in Bonner's armour. It had to be something special to spoil the goalkeeper's afternoon and that was the way it turned out.
Goals: Whyte (0-1, 53 min), Hurlock (1-1, 65 min).
