Trivia

  • Celtic Takeover and "Sack the Board" Days
  • First home game after the biscuit tin regime toppled (v Motherwell); brought down to earth with this defeat.
  • Brian Dempsey (Celtic 'Rebel'): "Celtic were playing Motherwell and it was put to me that Fergus and I should walk out into the centre circle and be surrounded by the players while they applauded us.I rejected that idea because I’ve always believed that it’s the players who thrill the Celtic supporters, not the suits. The fastest Fergus moved that day was when someone told him there was a problem with a turnstile. He ran round to see what the problem was and made sure there was no difficulty in getting as many paying customers into the ground as was humanly possible."

Review[Untitled]

First home game after the biscuit tin regime toppled; brought down to earth with this defeat. Many fans late into ground as stuck trying to get in. There was a surge of interest for fans to get to this game, although the attendance wasn't massive, but still far ahead of where the first team had been used to seeing of late. Many fans actually missed the goal due to their late entry. The turnstiles (pay at the gate) couldn't handle the large influx of fans.

There was a good atmosphere, but also a rather tired support too from the past week's events, the early conceded goal having taken the final burst of air out of the sails. A new board was wanted but a new world can also be an uncertain world.

This game showed there was a long way to go to get back to respectability, the club was still on its knees and the new board management were going to have a long difficult job ahead of them. Despite that, it was still good to get back to the football, but it was not all going to change overnight. The first team was in a state of mass disrepair, and morale was low. All else may have been rejoicing at the new regime, but inwardly there were players in the squad in the knowledge that when changes were to happen, they would be amongst those to be moved along or relegated in the pecking order.

For the first team, few would have believed that Macari would last in the job as manager. Already lost the respect of the first team and much of the support, he had to prove himself to everyone, but was anyone really sure he was up to it?

Anyhow, the first step on the long road to the top of the football table for Celtic. We've had many set-backs over the years, and this stumble is one of those, but we got back up and despite the wait finally reached the summit once again (albeit a long time away).

For now at least, all Celtic fans deserved some pride and a moment to savour after all the hard effort put in by many (especially Celts for Change group) to finally see a new dawn for the club under new management to develop and raise the club.
