Sevco winger Todd Cantwell claimed that Celtic’s victory in the Glasgow derby on Saturday was not of their own doing after insisting that it was his own side who lost the match. “The disappointment is real. We lost the game, they didn’t win it. We continue to stick together and build in the right direction. This is a project and an exciting one. Stick together as one.”
Michael Stewart BBC analyst: “Rangers [sic!] level of entitlement is incredible. Writing letters wanting explanations and apologies for one perceived mistake. I must have missed the numerous other clubs letters this season. St.J must surely have done it after their game at Ibrox…..” The latter point was in reference to St Johnstone’s 2-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox in September when Nicky Clark was wrongfully red carded by referee Willie Collum after a VAR check, with the tackle on Ryan Jack downgraded to a yellow after appeal.
QA:
Their shape caused us some problems in that they were good at blocking passing lanes. They didn’t particularly press very high or hard but they compacted the game pretty well. It didn’t help that we had a one man midfield at times in the first half.
They did absolutely nothing on the ball when they got it. That dick Raskin is even more of a myth than I thought he would be. To be fair to Cantwell, he’s a stupid looking dirty bastard that dives about like an arse, but he did almost have an assist to his name. A shame it was Jota he squared in with a great pass.
Weird to see that Tillman ‘the best player’ in the league was also crap.
Their main player was Clancy. Real drive and endeavour to get them up the pitch into dangerous positions. Some of the calls for their free kicks were absolutely ludicrous.
All in all, get it right up ye.

We were not brilliant today but nor were we poor for 90 minutes.
We scored three they scored two, their keeper had far more saves to make than ours.
Had Bernabei shot rather than passed the whole complexion of the game would look different.
Before the game I didn’t think Motormouth would play both Aliceband and the hobbit but keep one in reserve for the cup. Instead he tried to appease the hun support and ended up with another loss with only Goldson to bring back to change things for Hampden. At least twice in the first half McGregor simple ran past the hobbit who just watched him, just think what Hatate will do to him
I’m old enough to remember years of us playing the off the park box to box only to come up short time after time.
The press would just say it’s all about the final score.

The scatty nature of the Glasgow football environment was exemplified by an afternoon of gripping, rip-roaring entertainment that, truth be told, also glossed over myriad deficiencies.

The outcome was precisely what was expected as Celtic and Rangers continued their tribal hostilities, and yet still the occasion was full of surprises. Weird. Ange Postecoglou’s men, in securing a 3-2 victory from a see-saw encounter not only confirmed themselves as champions in all but arithmetic fashion. In extending their lead at the top of the cinch Premiership to 12 points, they established the biggest gap they have enjoyed over their Ibrox adversaries since the pandemic struck three years ago. However, while the facts, the figures, and the finesse and finishing of Kyogo Furahashi – his double central to his team’s 16th straight league home victory, and 29th win in 31 domestic outings – put Celtic statistically on a different plane from Michael Beale’s men, there were genuine indications that the Englishman is moving his side closer to Postecoglou’s unstoppables.
Beale said afterwards he would be regarded as a “fool” for stating as much, as well as for going heavy in asserting that Scotland’s footballing capital has two good teams on the basis of what the pair served up in a party ambience created by the home-fans-only environment at Celtic Park. His first claim appeared to have more credence than the second because the ancient adversaries’ third league confrontation was essentially defined by which team exhibited fewest flaws. And in a carnival atmosphere, the Ibrox visitors were foiled because they produced clownshow defending just when it seemed they might be able to apply a custard pie to the faces of opponents backed by all and sundry to commandeer the spotlight.
Furuhashi’s classy opener midway through a first period followed opening exchanges wherein Celtic’s passing was slipshod and Rangers proved surprisingly assured in executing a high-pressing gameplan. A glorious 25-yard free-kick strike from James Tavernier on the interval meant the visitors began the second period with their tails up. Backline hari-kari meant it wasn’t so long before these were between their legs. Celtic’s decisive edge came from the fact that they had the wiles to show no mercy when Beale’s men ballsed-up big time.
It is an answers-on-a-postcard job to what Ben Davies thought he was doing in the 63rd minute when he hoiked a clearance up in the air and, as it dropped near the byline where Jota was lurking, nudged a header timidly against the Portuguese as opposed to knocking behind for a corner. His leave of the senses allowed the winger to poke the ball towards Furuhashi stationed at an angle to the right of the area that still looked wholly unforgiving for a shot. Yet, somehow the striker was able to steer into the far corner. The forward’s spatial awareness shows itself as a psychic gift at times. As was also true when a exquisite touch and precision cut-back from Matt O’Riley led to him pirouetting like a ballet dancer before beating Allan McGregor with a low drive the veteran did lay a hand on as the deadlock was broken in 26 minutes.
The Rangers keeper was only merely in the vicinity of the ball when it came to Davies’ backline partner John Souttar – a shock inclusion because of Connor Goldson missing out with a hip problem – making a complete hash of a passback. Wonky with weight and direction, Jota was able to nip in to exact full punishment, clipping past McGregor as the keeper stood stranded at the edge of his box.
That made it 3-1 with 19 minutes of normal time remaining and seemed a goal to be the cue for Rangers to fold. As they had in such invidious circumstances in two of their three previous visits to the east end of Glasgow. The Ibrox men seem to have shaken off such supine tendencies, though. And when Tavernier ghosted into the box to meet a delicious curling cross from Borna Barisic and head in for his 100th club goal in the 79th minutes, the contest twisted again as no-one watching live had imagined. All of those, of course, greeting the Rangers captain’s landmark strike with stony silence. As was his first of the afternoon, despite the artfulness in arcing a long-range free-kick into the net off the underside of Joe Hart’s crossbar.
Beale agonised that Alfredo Morelos passed up a clear opening in the final minutes – as did Celtic’s Alexandro Bernabei – but was more vexed by the Colombian being denied the opener after he side-footed in from a 20th minute Barisic corner. His joy was shortlived because referee Kevin Clancy deemed he had pushed Alistair Johnston. No clear and obvious error was shown up in this decision by a VAR check, Nick Walsh in charge of the technology. Equally, though, with no clear aggressor in the tussling between Morelos and Johnston, had Clancy allowed the goal it is unlikely VAR would have encouraged him to think better of his call.
The Rangers manager cursed “fine margins”, as he called not being on the right side of this decision and in respect of a gripe – with no legitimacy or basis in the rules – over the ball scrapping Jota’s inside-his-body arm from Davies’ daft header in the build-up to Celtic’s second. With Nicolas Raskin giving some bite to Rangers midfield, before fading in the second period, and only Callum McGregor demonstrating authority in the home middle third – Aaron Mooy entirely off it on his injury return – the margins were certainly fine in this central area. But only in this department, ultimately.
As even Beale acknowledged, Celtic didn’t make the defensive errors of his side. And in Furuhashi they possess a plundering punisher for all occasions in the Scottish game who stands apart from any contemporaries. It is only a matter of months ago it was sneeringly being suggested he couldn’t do it on derby days. Five goals in the three such meetings across 2023 alone – with two straight doubles following his matchwinning contribution to the Viaplay Cup final triumph five weeks ago – demands that contention is placed in the past. Where it can reside with the 2022-23 title race that will now be replaced by a victorious canter to the finish line for Postecoglou and his team.

One that meant another double, from Rangers captain James Tavernier, didn’t prove the way the full-back would have wanted to bring up a century of goals for the Ibrox club. All three men gave their thoughts on events afterwards. As did Celtic captain Callum McGregor, who exalted his team-mate Furuhashi. Meanwhile, his manager and Rangers counterpart Michael Beale also had their say on the atmosphere generated by a Celtic Park capacity crowd made up only of home fans.

On his love-in with the Celtic support: “It was a terrific game but as a team we were united with the supporters and that’s why we could win. Everyone is supporting me and that’s why I could score. I really enjoy that. In every game we play to see the smiles on the fans’ faces. Personally, I try hard every game to make sure this happens. I really feel like the supporters are supporting me from the heart and so I want to give them something back. I have always felt that love from the supporters.”
On reaching 35 goals for the season in now sitting on 28: “I’m not really thinking ahead but every game I’m doing my best to keep scoring. Hopefully I will reach the big numbers.”

On reaching the 100-goal mark in unwanted fashion: “Obviously it was not the way I wanted it. It is frustrating because I felt that for parts we controlled the ball really well. We went in at half-time at 1-1. I thought the game could have changed when Alfredo [Morelos] scored [and it was disallowed at 0-0]. I didn’t think it was a foul. Then obviously we made a couple of mistakes. But I have seen back their second goal and it comes off Jota’s hand. So it is one of those where it is a disappointing. But even at 3-2 we had a couple of chances where we could have levelled it and we didn’t. Leaving without picking up anything is disappointing. As a team, if decisions are not going our way we have still got to do everything possible to try and win or to get something. It is just the fine margins in that final third. I had a chance with my head. We also had a good counter attack, a three v two, and we didn’t capitalise on it. They are the small margins.”

On whether the home-only crowd might have influenced decisions: “I can’t honestly speak about that too much. It is down to the officials at the end of the day. With that first goal with Alfredo, I thought he could have had a look at the screen for himself. In their second goal nothing gets looked at. We are always constantly speaking about it. There is obviously room for improvement. But we as a team have got to do enough to get it over the line ourselves.”

On Kyogo Furuhashi’s attributes and whether he is the best player he has played alongside: “He was outstanding, he did it in the [Viaplay] cup final, two more today and his level of finishing is outstanding in both goals. When you have someone like that at the top end of the pitch, you know he’s going to stick even half-chances away. That’s the difference between good strikers and great strikers and he’s one of the very best. His English is good, they all work really hard on it. Even big Oh [Hyeon-gyu] since he’s come in he’s worked hard on it. It’s getting better week on week and that’s testament to them as well. The way we play, there’s a system, there’s rotations and we all understand that because we’ve been working with the manager for a while. Guys like Kyogo have that football intelligence, it’s just eye contact, you see his runs and movements and over time it becomes second nature and you know where people are on the pitch. Even if the language barrier can be there at times you rely on that football connection. I would say so [that he’s the best I’ve ever played with] and he’s doing it on a consistent basis as well, it’s not just a one-off. He’s a really special player and we’re delighted to have him. In the big moments he steps up and that’s what you need.”
On whether Furuhashi could achieve Henrik Larsson-like status: “He’s certainly a special talent and only time will tell what he goes on to achieve, but while we’ve got him we celebrate him as much as we possibly can. Our job is to look after him, keep him fit, healthy and enjoying his football. He’s a really special player and we are delighted to have him.”

On the possibility of landing the treble: “I am not thinking about that at the minute. We have another big game on Sunday and then we have another one after that. That’s the nature of this group, we just want to perform to the best of our ability every time we go on the pitch. We’ll see where we are at the end of the season but we have put ourselves in a good position and that’s where you want to be as a footballer, getting to these last six or seven weeks and be fighting on all fronts and we’ll giving the maximum to make it a successful season.”

On standing up to Celtic in their own patch to show their rivals won’t have it all their own way in the derby rivals’ Scottish Cup semi-final confrontation at Hampden on May 30: “Listen, we’ve got work to do. We have made an improvement, I think everyone can see an improved Rangers team in terms of the energy and the commitment. We certainly need to recruit for it in the summer. We need to come out of the summer a lot stronger. I’m a defender of the players, I manage the team, I don’t think the gap’s massive but the reality is we are behind in the league and you would be deemed a fool saying words like that. But that is genuinely what I believe. We need to continue to recruit. In the short term, we have seven league games left. We didn’t deserve to lose today but we’ve got to get back on and get over this, and if we cut out one or two mistakes then the semi-final will be really interesting. I think you can see, there were two good football teams today, there are two good football teams in this country, not one. And my players have got to keep showing it on the pitch and grab a bit of respect back because there is a bit of disrespect for a team that has lost six league games in 107. OK, so it’s a good football team. I would say that the result was in our hands today because we made two massive errors. I didnt see Celtic making the errors we made, so that’s frustrating. If we can eradicate that, we are on the right road.”
On having no supporters inside Celtic Park: “That was my 16th derby and I never experienced it how it used to be [with away fans having one end]. So I’ve only seen it this way, and two games at Hampden. The atmosphere at Hampden when it is 50-50 is fantastic. It sells the Scottish game so well. I’m not the decision-maker, I’m not in and around it. I’m led to believe it was a call from Celtic why there were to be no away fans between now and the end of the season. That’s what I’m led to believe, from when I asked the question. I can’t say I’m happy with it. Even if you got a few fans it is fantastic. The home fans today made a good atmosphere, ours will at Ibrox, but that bit going back-and-forth I think would be better for the game. It is a game that is played six times a season – as of now – and that is something we need to cherish. Part of the environment and everything, we all have to protect that. I thought the two teams put in a really good game, we played against a really top opponent and we looked a good team ourselves. I thought the crowd were up and at other times they were anxious. I think they thought they were in a game today. So I thought my players handled it very well.”

On earning another home derby win, and its importance: “It’s obviously very pleasing. It was a typical derby with a bit of everything. Credit to both sets of players, they gave their all. We controlled it in different areas and always looked a threat going forward when we played through the lines. They were a threat, mainly on set-pieces. That gave an edge to the game but this group of players just find a way all the time. It’s unbelievable, the character and self-belief they have in each other to continually get the job done. The reality is that it’s difficult for them to do what I want in the midst of the chaos in the game. You’re watching them, thinking we could be a bit calmer – but that’s easy to say from the outside. You know the consequence of the game, you know it’s a derby and what it does to the league. All these factors affect players. But they continually stay focused in that they won’t be taken away from reaching the goal they want. It’s definitely a significant victory for us. In the context of the league, we’re 12 points in front with seven games to go. But aside from that, this group of players has had an outstanding season so far. And to continually find a way to win a game of football, to score goals and deliver again – that’s the key part for me. Everything else, you can analyse. But that spirit they have is undeniable.”
On the atmosphere generated by a sold-out Celtic Park made up of only home fans: “The support was outstanding today, unbelievable. What an atmosphere, again you feel privileged to be part of that. I am sure the players really got energised by it. The fans were just willing the team on. They were a threat at set pieces, we had a couple of nervy minutes but you could still see the fans were picking them up. I said to the players afterwards that if you can make one person’s life a little bit better, the amount of joy that brings, you are outstanding. I said to them they have made countless thousands of lives so much better for the next few days. There is not greater feeling for anyone, particularly the players. I want them to enjoy that because they have earned that.”

The artisanship of Alistair Johnston, the Australian acknowledged, was also key on an afternoon when his team produced an uneven display as they extended their cinch Premiership lead to 12 points but could hang their hat on the Canadian full-back aggressively fighting his corner.
“Alistair loves a battle, doesn’t he? I think he’d have a fight by himself,” said the Celtic manager. “When you bring guys in, you look at what he can bring from a playing perspective. But having been here 20 months, you also know that it takes a special kind of personality to play for this club. The expectations are there every week and you have to perform and be at your best. You have to overcome every opponent and Alistair exemplifies all of that. He’s a good footballer and physically he’s outstanding. But he also has that character and winning drives. He’s only been here for four months but has played in three of these games. In every one, he’s stood up really well.”
Furuhashi’s contribution as he took his derby goals record to five in his past three such outing was undeniably of huge significance but Postecoglou joked he had to take care in assessing his unerring brilliance, which has now delivered him 28 goals this season. “I knew what he had to bring [when I brought him from Japan], not just as a player but as a person,” he said of the £4.7million signing from Vissel Kobe in the summer of 2021. “He’s a winner. He’s outstanding. The positive thing is that people don’t pump him up too much. If they do, other people might notice. So he’s struggling at times – but he’s alright …”

Meanwhile, Postecoglou chose to sidestep the idea that Celtic had made a statement against an improved Rangers, not just snuffed out even the possibility of resparking their championship ambitions. “I don’t know about statements,” he said following his team’s 18th straight domestic home win, that leaves them on course for a record Scottish points total with only five points not claimed from the 93 contested. “Is it something you write down or have to proclaim? All we want to do is represent this football club and be the best possible people that we can be. So far this season, the group of players has been outstanding. In every challenge that has been put before them that has been the case. The season is not over, there are still games to play and we are not going to waste any one of them. Why should we?
“What that means beyond is of no relevance, the drive comes from within. From the dressing room and what we do every day. I keep telling them, don’t waste a day. Celtic look destined to retain the Scottish Premiership title after crushing Rangers’ hopes with a thrilling derby victory.
Kyogo Furuhashi netted either side of James Tavernier’s sumptuous free-kick at a raucous Celtic Park devoid of away supporters, before Jota rolled in the hosts’ third.
Tavernier headed his 100th Rangers goal to set up a nervy finale, with the Rangers captain nodding inches wide moments later, but Celtic held on to go 12 points clear with seven games left.
With their vastly superior goal difference, it means a maximum of three more wins will ensure Celtic retain the trophy, while Rangers manager Michael Beale is left to lick his wounds after suffering the first league defeat of his tenure.

Both sides came into this combustible fixture in rampant form but missing totemic figures through injury.
Celtic had to do without midfielder Reo Hatate, while the absence of Connor Goldson – who scored a double when Rangers last won at Celtic Park in October 2020 – meant a first start since July for John Souttar.
The Scotland international and fellow centre-back Ben Davies were both culpable of glaring second-half errors seized upon as Celtic ultimately emerged triumphant.
Rangers knew this game was their last hope of reviving already slender title hopes and they set about their task with relish, putting Celtic’s defence ill at ease in the opening skirmishes with a high press.
Controversy is never far from this derby and it reared its head when Alfredo Morelos poked in Borna Barisic’s corner with a first-time finish, only to be penalised by referee Kevin Clancy for a push on Alistair Johnston.
The visitors were incensed after VAR ratified the decision, and 60,000 home fans heaved a sigh of relief.
Celtic, having also had an opener disallowed when Kyogo was offside when finishing off a brilliant Johnston pass, roused themselves and surged ahead.
Callum McGregor and Jota had tested Allan McGregor before Kyogo swivelled and lashed past the Rangers goalkeeper’s grasp after being picked out by Matt O’Riley’s cutback.
Rangers were rocking on their heels – Jota threatened a second with a swerving drive from distance that stung McGregor’s palms – but went up the tunnel level thanks to an exquisite equaliser.
Tavernier’s 25-yard free-kick was top drawer and arrowed into the net, kissing the bar on its way past the despairing dive of Joe Hart.
Rangers looked to keep up the momentum and Morelos was thwarted by Hart after a rare slip by the impressive Johnston, then had a header blocked and Todd Cantwell drilled wide.
But Beale’s side were architects of their own downfall at the other end, and Celtic’s second was a personal nightmare for Davies.
Having cut out Jota’s cross, the defender tried to keep the ball in play on the byeline but succeeded only in knocking it off Jota and into the path of Kyogo, who gobbled up the gift by smashing past McGregor from an acute angle.
Davies rallied by making a last-ditch block to deny Kyogo, but Celtic extended their lead with what proved to be the decisive goal. Jota nipped in to steal Souttar’s blind passback to McGregor and roll the ball into the net to spark bedlam in the stands.
Tavernier popped up the back post to head in Barisic’s cross, but his landmark goal had a hollow ring as Rangers failed to find a leveller.
Celtic substitute Alexandro Bernabei ought to have calmed the home nerves when he burst through one-on-one, and there was one final scare when Barisic lined up a free-kick on the edge of Celtic’s box but sent it too high with the last kick of a high-octane derby.

Celtic have made fast starts their hallmark under Ange Postecoglou but were knocked off kilter as Rangers came tearing at them.
Passes were frequently going astray, the normally unflappable Cameron Carter-Vickers had a couple of slack moments, and Aaron Mooy endured a torrid return from injury.
Yet while Celtic were not at their fluent best, they can still rely upon devastating attacking weapons. Having netted the last-gasp equaliser in the previous league meeting with Rangers, Kyogo’s contribution was of colossal importance here – taking his season’s goal haul to 28 – and Jota’s goal was fitting reward for an incisive performance.
Rangers did plenty of things right but it’s now no wins in three for Beale against Celtic, including two defeats.
The Ibrox side did not allow Celtic to dominate midfield this time, but were found wanting in the key moments at both ends and will feel aggrieved at Morelos’ disallowed opener.
The Colombian then passed up a big chance at 1-1 and Rangers did not display the cutting edge of their hosts. The blunt truth is the difference in a tight contest was costly errors from Davies and Souttar that undid all the visitors’ enterprising play.

Rangers manager Michael Beale: “It was a strong performance marred by two mistakes. I won’t pick holes in the boys for that because I thought they played well.
“I thought the minimum we deserved was a draw and I’m disappointed with one or two decisions from the VAR officials.
“If you look at Alfredo Morelos’ disallowed goal, why is their guy not trying to play the ball? Only Alfredo is trying to play the ball. I think it’s a goal. It’s a soft one.”

Order the ribbons, call the engraver, get the party planner on the phone – the 2022-23 Premiership ended as a contest on Saturday afternoon in gorgeous sunshine at a raucous Celtic Park.
And get some oxygen masks while you’re at it. So much for no away fans lessening the atmosphere in this game, so much for the mad carnival of an Old Firm contest being reduced because hundreds of visiting fans were not involved.
Rangers supporters might have been watching in their own backyards but they’ll have heard the racket drifting in on the Glasgow breeze, the feast from the east as Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota put the title to bed, tucked it in, sang it a lullaby and switched out the lights.
It was a pulsating contest. Loud, angry at times, mistake-ridden at others, classy when the goals started flying in, and thrilling pretty much for every second.
Rangers gave it a mighty blast. James Tavernier scored his 99th and 100th goals for the club and, 11 minutes from time, almost added his 101st.
At 3-1 and with the bit firmly between Celtic’s teeth, Rangers looked like they were heading for one of those mortifying days they’ve been subjected to often in this place. But they rallied in a pursuit of, well, a draw which would have been remarkable in the circumstances but not remarkable enough to interrupt Celtic’s march to back-to-back titles.

The different generations in the Celtic ranks all have their own immortals when it comes to trickery and goals and pure unadulterated entertainment.
For the veterans, nobody will match Jimmy Johnstone. For a younger crop, watching Henrik Larsson will probably be as good as it’s ever going to get. For the new wave who weren’t around to see those heroes in the flesh, Kyogo, the whirling dervish of Celtic Park, is surely the man.
Having scored the late, late equaliser at Ibrox in January that sickened Rangers in the league, he then scored the two goals that saw them off in the League Cup final. He will visit them in their nightmares again tonight because his two here – his 27th and 28th of the season – were the giant foundations stones upon which Celtic’s now 12-point lead were built.
What an extraordinary signing the Japanese leviathan has been, what a goals haul, what joy he has sparked among the Celtic support.
This was tricky for Ange Postecoglou’s side before Kyogo struck. Rangers had come here with nothing to lose and hustled and harried their hosts from the get-go, denying them a rhythm, forcing them into loose passing under pressure.

Rangers had a big goal shout before the opener, Alfredo Morelos scoring before VAR ruled it out for a push – a very gentle one that infuriated the visitors’ bench – on Alistair Johnston. If Rangers felt aggrieved – and they had good cause – their fury turned to pain soon after.
You’d have bet the house on Kyogo lighting this place up. He scored early on but was offside when banging it past Allan McGregor. No goal, but a warning. Let the wee man free in a yard of space and don’t expect to survive for long.
And Rangers didn’t. The variety of goals that the Japanese striker scores is astonishing, but all of them have one thing in common – speed of thought that bewilders the unfortunates tasked with the job of marking him.
Matt O’Riley did brilliantly down the left but it was Kyogo’s reading of the situation – the whole picture taken in in a millisecond – that brought the goal.
In peeling away from Ben Davies and into a pocket of space, he created the platform. In pointing to O’Riley where he wanted it delivered, he took command of the situation. Kyogo spun and, by the time Davies had recovered his ground, it was too late.
They talk about fine margins in sport. This was an example. A moment’s distraction on Davies’ part was enough for Kyogo to exploit. It was ruthless execution.
‘Rangers resilient but unravel in key moments’
For Rangers people, this was desperately familiar territory. In three games at Celtic Park on Postecoglou’s watch, his team had scored eight goals against their rivals with seven coming in the first half. Make that eight out of nine.
You have to credit Rangers for what they found in adversity. Tavernier’s free-kick to level it was outrageously good. Morelos’ miss – and Joe Hart’s save – early in the new half was a continuation of the trouble they were causing Celtic. Todd Cantwell fired one over when he should have done better.
Those moments weren’t pleasant for Celtic, but they came through it and grew stronger.
When Kyogo made it 2-1 there was delirium but no surprise. When Davies made a hash of his clearance, of course it was the Japanese who was on the end of it. When he hit it, of course it went in. Unerring is one word. Unstoppable is another.
“It’s easy for me to say, but from the moment he arrived at the club he’s been outstanding,” said his manager. When Postecoglou talks about Kyogo it is the closest the coolest manager gets to cooing. “The way he works for his team is just brilliant. I never have to gee him up.”
Postecoglou spoke about his player’s kind nature and his smiling demeanour, but “don’t underestimate his competitiveness”. Nobody would or could underestimate anything about this guy.
Rangers missed their chances and then unravelled for Celtic’s second and third, the Jota goal following the John Souttar blunder that sent Celtic Park into orbit. Tavernier pulled one back and Beale’s men pushed on for a leveller that never came.
He’s done well, the Rangers manager. Twenty-one games in all competitions. Eighteen wins, two losses, one draw. He needs no reminding of who the losses and the draw came against.
He’ll need no telling about the influence of Kyogo either. Just as much as the Celtic fans can’t get enough of him, Rangers people must long for the day when they see the back of him.
That day will be a long way off. As he celebrated in the aftermath, Kyogo looked like a man in paradise, in more ways than one.

Even with a more than healthy 12-point lead and just 21 left to play for, you won’t find Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou admitting the title is won.
“Have you got a trophy with you? No? Probably suggests it’s not done,” was the Australian’s wry response in the wake of the pulsating 3-2 derby win over Rangers.
Postecoglou sees no need to rush things, preferring to wallow in the satisfaction of another Old Firm success and making sure his players do likewise.
Celtic put their fans through the wringer at times, but are now unbeaten in five meetings with Rangers – winning three – and Michael Beale is still searching for his first derby victory at the Ibrox helm after three attempts.
The significance of the result was not lost on the partisan 60,000-strong home support – with the stadium erupting in elation at full-time – nor the manager.
“I told the players after the game if you can make one person’s life better then you don’t understand how rewarding and enriching that is,” said Postecoglou.
“But they’ve made countless thousands of lives better for the next few days at least. And they need to enjoy that and appreciate that because they’ve done something special.
“The support was outstanding today, unbelievable. What an atmosphere. Again you feel privileged to be part of that. I’m sure the players really got energised by it. The fans were just willing the team on.”

Postecoglou wasn’t over-egging things when he remarked the game, played at a ferocious pace with tackles flying in, had “a bit of everything”.
The sides traded disallowed goals, with Kyogo Furuhashi’s a clear-cut offside before the hosts benefitted from a more controversial call as Alfredo Morelos was judged to have pushed Alistair Johnston.
Kyogo ended up with a double, as did Rangers captain James Tavernier, taking his tally to 100 goals for the club from right-back.
There were calamitous blunders from Rangers’ Ben Davies and John Souttar as Celtic went 3-1 up and seemingly were coasting to victory, then had to ride out a nervy finale.
And while Postecoglou conceded his team were “on edge and that showed in our game”, he hailed their ability to once again find a way to win and singled out talisman Kyogo for praise.
“I’m as much an onlooker as anyone else on gameday, and I can’t help but admire the character of this group of players,” said Postecoglou. “They find a way every time to get the job done.
“They’ve formed a strong unity and bond. There’s an unshakeable belief in each other and what we’re trying to do.
“We knew the consequences of winning today. The players embrace that expectation. They’re a group of winners.
“From the moment he arrived, Kyogo has been outstanding. If he doesn’t score a goal he works so hard for the team. He wants that responsibility to rise to the occasion. He wants to be the person who delivers and he did it again today.”
Celtic’s pursuit of the treble now comes into sharp focus. The next meeting with Rangers, in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden on 30 April, will determine whether they move within 90 minutes of completing the domestic clean sweep.
Postecoglou won’t tolerate any dropping of intensity in the closing stretch.
“We’ve still got seven games to go in the league, a cup semi-final, opportunities to produce some magic and win games,” he added. “I’m not going to let anyone dismiss any of these games.”
