Chant: “You can shove your Coronation up your arse!”
Date: April/May 2023
Summary
“You can shove your Coronation up your arse!”
Celtic fans chant
Back in May 2023, the UK was to coronate the new Royal head of state (King Charles III). The timing coincided in the same weekend that Celtic were to seal the league title (going for the treble), and also came just after Celtic had defeated Sevco the weekend before in the Scottish Cup semi-final.
In England, the EPL had stipulated (without an enforcement order) that clubs should play the National Anthem in tribute before all matches! There’s no need to reiterarte the many points on the expected backlash from Celtic if the SFA or league counterparts tried to do the same (and in fairness they didn’t).
Regardless, at the aforementioned Scottish Cup semi-final game v Sevco (won 1-0 by Celtic), the Celtic fans made their views clear with the entire Celtic End at Hampden singing loudly & proudly:
“#You can shove your Coronation up your arse!#”
The videos of the chants ended up going viral, with the usual reaction from the right-wing jinogists across the media in mock outrage against the Celtic fans. At the same time, the international response was incredible, with the clips making news in places including Australia, India and America (e.g. Newsweek magazine). The response was laughter and support for Celtic. Across social media (from all corners of the globe), there probably has been little more widely dissmenated about any single Celtic related story in the club’s history.
A clip even ended up on the BBC’s satrical show “Have I Got News For You”, with the audience clapping, cheering and laughing in support! Even that clip went viral.
The chant became a counter-national anthem for the disaffected & anti-establishment, especially in Scotland where support for the monarchy was at an all-time low. It even got adopted by certain other anti-monarchists (e.g. Liverpool fans). The Partick Thistle fans copied the chants a week later in their vital league play-off matches v Queen’s Park.
As one person on social media (@AuntyMason) summed it perfectly:
“It’s awesome that people around the world are beginning to catch up to the way we Celtic supporters think.”
“Thank you to the Celtic fans for giving us all a song to sing on Coronation day that we can sing with joy.”

King Charles Told ‘Shove Your Coronation Up Your A**’ by Soccer Fans

Scottish soccer fans chanted “you can shove your coronation up your a**” in a swipe at King Charles III, who was not present at the time.
Celtic fans filled the 52,000-capacity Hampden Park stadium with the anti-royal song, to the tune of “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain,” during a match against Glasgow rivals Rangers, a team known for being supportive of the British monarchy.
Footage of the chorus of dissent went viral on Twitter after it received 2.8 million views and 17,000 likes.
Twitter account CeltsAreHere wrote “Stick the coronation where?” as the caption of the clip, which was filmed from the stands.
The match, on Sunday, April 30, came less than a week before King Charles’ coronation of Saturday, May 6. He inherited the throne from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022.
The Church of England had also encouraged Brits to pledge allegiance to the king during his coronation service. It made the front pages of English newspapers the day before, but not the Scottish ones.
Members of the anti-monarchy campaign group Republic have staged a series of protests calling for a democratically elected head of state. Campaigners will hold another on the day of the coronation, on Saturday, May 6.
It is the latest in a line of incidents in which sports fans in Britain have shown their disdain for the monarchy, though the timing here is particularly acute.
William was booed after he attended the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, London, in May 2022 by Liverpool football fans in a show of anti-establishment sentiment.
The now-Prince of Wales was targeted again by soccer fans gathered in a pub in Sheffield in July that year. Newsweek was again told this was less about personal animosity towards William and more a stand against the establishment.
Then, when William and Kate Middleton visited Boston with the Earthshot Prize, they were met at a Boston Celtics game by boos and some chants of “U.S.A., U.S.A.”
The monarchy has strong ties to Scotland, holidaying at Balmoral in Aberdeenshire each summer.
Charles spoke of Elizabeth II’s love for the country in a speech in October: “We gather to celebrate this great occasion but also to commemorate the life of Her late Majesty, whose deep love for Scotland was one of the foundations of her life.”
One of the king’s fondest projects is also based in Scotland, the regeneration of Dumfries House, in Cumnock, in East Ayrshire.

Scottish football spectators have shown their disapproval of King Charles ahead of his coronation this weekend.
Celtic football fans were in full force singing “you can shove your coronation up your ar**” to the tune of “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round The Mountain” during the Old Firm on Sunday.
They clapped and sang the song in the face of arch-rivals and known supporters of the British monarchy, Rangers Football Club.
The boisterous chant comes just days after Great Britain was invited to pledge its allegiance to the new King during his coronation on Saturday.

The footage has now been viewed millions of times on social media and received a mixture of responses.
“Well done and it’s been put across so eloquently,” tweeted one.
Another wrote: “The best thing ever to hear on a Monday morning. I’ll be singing it loud and clear on Saturday.”
“The videos of people singing ‘You can shove your coronation up your ar***’ a few before His coronation, is something,” Mauritia’s Miss Universe Ameeksha Dilchand posted.
Meanwhile some didn’t see the light in the song, including staunch monarchist and Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan.
“Well, utterly charming of course, as ever, from Celtic fans,” Morgan said on Piers Morgan Uncensored.
“But that’s what they’ve always been like towards our monarchy, and I have a similar view of Celtic fans, so all’s fair in love and war.
“All those who desire can get involved, all those who don’t can keep their big gobs shut or change the channel, or go and watch Celtic.”
Another who wasn’t impressed with the chant tweeted: “Just a bunch if Irish catholic misfits that are hated by the rest of Glasgow and Scotland. Long live the king! #CoronationWeekend.”
Celtic fans have regularly shown their dislike for the monarch during football matches with other chants.
During a minute’s applause for the Queen shortly after her death there was sections of the Celtic fans chanting “if you hate the Royal Family clap your hands” and holding up banner with the same message.

Scottish Premiership Football Club Celtic secured a spot in the Scottish Cup final, but its fans have captured worldwide attention for a collective chant directed towards King Charles’ coronation. Following a 1-0 win over Rangers, fans chanted “You can shove your coronation up your a**e,” in response to the Scottish public being invited to pledge allegiance to the king as part of his coronation on Saturday. This incident is not the first time Celtic fans have displayed their opposition to the monarchy.

Tradionally Anti-Monarchy
Established in 1887 as a club for Irish immigrants, Celtic has traditionally had fans who harbour anti-monarchy sentiments, which continue to this day. After Queen Elizabeth II’s death last year, Celtic fans were urged to show respect by participating in a minute of applause before a match against St Mirren at St Mirren Park. However, the fans booed loudly during the applause and held up a banner that read: “If you hate the Royal Family, clap your hands,” despite the request for respect by their coach, Ange Postecoglou.
Polling conducted last year revealed that support for the Royal Family in Scotland was 10% lower than in the rest of the UK, and another survey found that young people between the ages of 16-49 believed that Scotland should abandon the monarchy and elect a head of state.
Scotland was also compelled to leave the EU despite every council choosing to remain in the 2016 referendum. As a result, Scotland’s new first minister, Humza Yousaf, has pledged to deliver independence for Scotland.
Nearly a decade has passed since Scots decided to stay in the UK by a 55-45 margin, and current polling indicates that the vote would be almost evenly divided, with young people overwhelmingly supporting leaving the UK.
Celtic’s recent public protest, however, has made it clear that their fans are still not in favor of the monarchy.

There is nothing like soccer fans.
If you want pure IDGAF energy – just roll up to a ‘match on the pitch’ and get ready for madness. Be warned though – it’s not a politically correct place. In fact, it’s a breath of freedom.
As some of the western world celebrated that England now has a new King and Queen in the year 2023, the Scots didn’t hide their feelings about their thoughts on Charles and Camilla and the whole pomp and circumstance of a monarchy.
“You can shove the coronation up your ass!” the Celtic Football Club fans sang throughout their team’s game, and it is amazing.
What makes this so good is that it brings about the perfect combination of emotion, passion, and attitude.
You have:
Notoriously rowdy (and drunk) Celtic soccer fans that are absolute lunatics
Historic rivalry between both countries (Just watch Braveheart)
Nauseating and non-stop coverage of the monarcy and the Coronation this week
You put them all together and you have the Celtic F.C. fans telling the world EXACTLY how they feel.
Imagine if those scenes happened here in America? Vice President Kamala Harris would lose her mind. CNN would go non-stop coverage and call for them to be jailed over hate speech because “they said mean things.”
PRINCE WILLIAM FOLLOWS CHARLES IN THE LINE OF SUCCESSION
If you turned on the television this past week you couldn’t escape that apparently England has a new King and Queen in the year 2023. Yes, after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing last September, that meant her elder son Charles and his wife Camilla were enthroned. There was also the drama about Prince Harry coming to the Coronation without Meghan Markle (Thank God).
I’d argue that we shouldn’t blame the Celtic fans here because does anyone really actually like Camilla? And now she’s going to be the Queen? Gross.
It’s not the first time the Scottish soccer faithful have expressed their displeasure with the Brits. You might recall the country’s Dundee United fans chanting “Lizzie’s In A Box,” after Queen Elizabeth passed away.
Seems like things are going just great over in the United Kingdom!
