Trailing 2-0 at the interval, the champions never at any stage thereafter looked like finding a way back into the with the Australian suggesting that amounted to a deriliction of the duties that come with playing for the club. “In the second half, I just felt we almost accepted our fate rather than sort of going out there to try and change the course of the game,” said Postecoglou. “We had the euphoria of winning the title last week and it is kind of weird winning it and you are having to play away again. You don’t really get a chance to sort of appreciate the moment, but welcome to Celtic. That’s the expectation. That’s not going to change.”

Postecoglou appeared to aim a specific rebuke at Oh Hyeon-gyu, who missed a glaring chance only three minutes after Todd Cantwell had given Michael Beale’s men a fourth-minute lead. The striker was one of the fringe players deployed on an afternoon as Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Greg Taylor started on the bench, while mainstays Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston were missing through injury. In the frontman and defenders Yuki Kobayashi – appearing at fault in both goals – and Alexandro Bernabei and the frontman, Celtic had understudies who did not rise to the occasion.

“It was a big moment,” he said of the South Korean forward striking the post after he had touched the ball past keeper Robbie McCrorie. “They [Rangers] were up for it, the crowd were up for it and they get a goal. It is a tough place to get an opportunity, but it is not the first time certainly I’ve done that and I’ve sometimes given guys debuts in these games. They just need to understand what this football club’s about, that’s the expectations. You don’t get an easy ride, you don’t get a cushy introduction into life as a footballer. It is demanding from the moment you put on a shirt to the moment you leave. It is fair to say it wasn’t just about the guys who came in. Obviously the changes didn’t help but I just thought the general performance, and the level of performance, wasn’t there.

“It is not about being critical, it’s just about the expectations of this football club. When you represent it – as a player and a manager – you are expected to win every week. There is no mystery around that, so when you don’t, you have to accept that, try and understand it and embrace the expectations around it, and make sure it doesnt happen again. It’s not about me being critical it is just about making sure the players and everyone understand that is the expectations around this football club.”

A day when the Rangers manager could inhale the sweet smell of a derby destruction, and exhale deeply. Oh, so deeply. With a mix of satisfaction and relief. Oh, such sheer relief. A day he desperately needed and, over the piece in now five such confrontations, deserved. Of course, even a commanding 3-0 league victory at home bitterest rivals Celtic is still just a crumb when it arrives after those adversaries have already been crowned champions, and are looking to chow down on a three-course feast before the campaign is out. But, let no-one be in any doubt, it was a morsel providing sustenance it was unthinkable for Beale to be left without. A scrap that a ravenous Ibrox crowd unsurprisingly devoured with raucous relish. No wonder when they have been starved of seeing their team treat Celtic as a sacrificial lamb for more than a year.

Beale’s predicament pre-match was illustrated by the fact that even media down south on the morning of the game had cause to lay out the doomsday scenario in the event of his Rangers team being turned over for a fourth successive time by Ange Postecoglou’s men. That outcome would have resulted in him becoming the first manager from either club to lose four straight in the fixture for 19 years and placed a threatening cloud over his head before even setting about the quest to point the club in the direction of the sunny uplands with his summer squad reconstruction.

Instead, with midfielders Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin the focal points as the Ibrox side produced the dynamism and dig – as well as the former proving the man who set them on their way with a smacked-in fourth-minute opener – Celtic wilted. Like no less than outdated, garage-bought bouquet, indeed, as they were overwhelmed in a more comprehensive fashion than in their three single-goal victories in the fixture that had preceded this Ibrox defeat.

Mitigations even beyond the title banking having subconsciously diluted motivation that have a tendency to impact on derby dead rubbers will be cited by those of a Celtic disposition. The visitors’ line-up was devoid of five integral first picks, with Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Greg Taylor starting on the bench and Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston missing through injury. It was not only broken but recast as Postecolgou’s side were the team in a fug as they flunked-out defensively and flailed when crucial chances came their way. The confrontation in microcosm was offered up by the back-and-forth across the first seven minutes. Rangers began with an aggressive intent that seemed to startle their rivals, infused by the howlings of a home-only support juiced-up to demand their players deliver some sort of payback for the miseries inflicted on them in the fixture across three competitions in the past three months alone. Cantwell was an attack dog who had only one mode – full pelt – and only one thought in his mind – to best his opposition. And it was his ability to be fully switched that underpinned the opener, wherein Kobayashi seemed entirely to switch off when Joe Hart, moving to his right, punched down a wicked drive from John Lundstram. As the ball bounced up, Cantwell steamed in ahead of all others to bash a first-time effort into the far corner.

Emphatic, the finish was in contrast to the attempt from Oh after sent in on McCrorie by a delicious ball from the right by Liel Abada. Taking a touch to eliminate the keeper, the forward’s clumsy clip towards an empty goal came to grief on the outside of the post. Just after the half-hour mark, Kobayashi’s afternoon further deteriorated courtesy of being embarassingly outmuscled by Souttar as they challenged for an outswinging James Tavernier corner from the right. In a moment of redemption for the Scotland international following his catastrophic error for the third goal in Rangers’ 3-2 title-setting defeat in Glasgow’s east end six weeks ago, his strength and determination allowed him to angled in a header while slightly off balance.

Rangers needed, and wanted, the occasion to belong to them more than Celtic and the edge in their endeavours betrayed the context through. And following a one-handed block at full-stretch by McCrorie from Matt O’Riley within 10 minutes of the restart, the heart disappeared from Postecoglou’s men – which their manager expressed his displeasure over in his post-match assessment.

The role reversal from this season’s previous – admittedly more significant – five derbies was made complete when Callum McGregor and Carl Starfelt got themselves into a fankle in the lead-up to Rangers’ 70th minute third. A result of the defender stepping in as the Celtic captain scrapped with Cantwell for possession only for him to have the ball then nicked from him on his blindside by Sakala. It gave the Zambian a clear to motor forward and round Hart before tapping in. With that strike, a confrontation that has driven Rangers to distraction this season could be parked in the most satisfying fashion.

Michael Beale earned his first Old Firm victory at the fifth attempt as an intense and energetic Rangers overwhelmed Celtic to inflict just a second league defeat of the season on the Scottish Premiership champions.

Ange Postecoglou’s back-to-back title winners bounced to Govan after sealing a successive crown at Tynecastle last weekend.

But they were met by a charged home side who ended Celtic’s remarkable unbeaten streak of 34 domestic games and ensured they can no longer break the club’s points record of 106.

The victory ends a six-game winless run in the fixture for Rangers, who opened the scoring after just five minutes when Todd Cantwell drilled in on the rebound.

Celtic almost responded instantly as Oh Hyeon-gyu dinked an attempt off Robby McCrorie’s woodwork, but the visitors were well below-par and found themselves two down at the break when John Souttar headed in his first Rangers goal.

Beale’s men maintained their level after the interval and scored a deserved third when Fashion Sakala capitalised on poor defending to round Joe Hart and ensure the insurmountable gap between the clubs is narrowed to 10 points.

“It’s just three points, but it’s optimism for the fans going into the summer,” Beale told BBC Sportsound. “I’m delighted with our players. Over the season they’ve had hard days, so have the fans as well.”

“We were more decisive in the boxes. The energy of the team is what I’ve been looking for as well. I haven’t seen it enough.”

The win is ultimately too little, too late for Beale this term, but it was imperative the Rangers manager and many of his players started next season knowing they are capable of getting the better of Postecoglou’s Celtic.

After three straight derby defeats, including February’s Viaplay Cup final and last month’s Scottish Cup semi-final, the hosts started like a team with a point to prove.

And they made the perfect start when John Lundstram’s strike from the edge of the box was palmed by Hart, with Cantwell – who was inspirational throughout – following up by lashing in first time.

Barring a brief spell in the first half during which Oh clipped the left-hand post and Abada had a close-range shot blocked, Rangers kept up their impressive energy levels throughout and had two-goal cushion when Souttar thundered in.

Cantwell was a constant threat to a Celtic defence that looked disjointed without Cameron Carter-Vickers, as the January signing from Norwich forced Hart into two fine stops at his front post after the interval.

But the former England keeper wasn’t helped by a shaky backline, who were at fault again for the Rangers third.

Carl Starfelt essentially played through Sakala to skip by Hart and roll into an empty net – a goal which told the story of a day to forget for the newly-crowned champions.

Despite playing just 17 times for Rangers this term, Cantwell has been one of the club’s standout performers, which says as much about the Ibrox club’s season as it does the midfielder’s immediate impact. The 25-year-old will be an integral part of Beale’s side going forward.
Rangers fringe players stake claim – analysis

There is no downplaying the size of the rebuild Beale will have to oversee this summer. Saturday’s result doesn’t dilute that.

But the Ibrox manager will now know a lot more about his fringe players after again handing starts to McCrorie, Rabbi Matondo and Ridvan Yilmaz, while Souttar impressed after being brought in for the injured Ben Davies.

McCrorie, now 25, did his chances of becoming Rangers’ long-term number one no harm. When called upon, the keeper made a fine stop to deny Matt O’Riley and showed authority by collecting high balls and coming off his line sharply.

Meanwhile, Matondo demonstrated good drive, pace and tireless running at the top end of the pitch, as did Yilmaz at left-back, but decision-making and quality on the ball left question marks at times.

If Beale learned a lot about his fringe players in victory, Postecoglou did too in defeat. There is a significant drop off in the Australian’s defence without centre-back Carter-Vickers, plus full-backs Alistair Johnston and Greg Taylor.

The Celtic attack is also nowhere near as fluid without top scorer Kyogo Furuhashi, who started on the bench, while Daizen Maeda’s relentless pressing was also lacking from the frontline.

But despite a rare off-day, the fact Postecoglou’s side have now lost just twice in their last 67 league games only emphasises the remarkable consistency of the back-to-back Premiership winners.
