Trivia

  • KO: 15:00; Saturday; Celtic TV only; League Match 36 of 38
  • Celtic on 96pts, league title already won. Going for the treble at present (Scottish Cup final in two weeks)
  • St Mirren only one of two sides to defeat Celtic domestically this season to date (Sevco last week only other). And having drawn today at Celtic Park, that is arguably the best record against Celtic this season (Sevco’s results v Celtic were both at Ibrox).
  • To recognise the tragedy of The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mór), Celtic observing National Famine Commemoration Day, wearing the club’s Celtic Cross logo
  • Celtic B parade the Glasgow Cup and Youth Cup
  • Cameron Carter-Vickers underwent surgery last week, his leg is “as good as it can be” but admitted “it’s hard to put a timeline on it at the moment” when asked when he would return to action.
  • SWPL: major day on Sunday for Celtic women’s side as went in with chance of winning league title depending on other results, but Glasgow City secured their 16th Scottish title in the most dramatic fashion after beating reigning champions Sevco at Ibrox thanks to a stoppage-time winner. City had arrived with a two-point lead and required just a win to lift the trophy ahead of Rangers and Celtic. Celtic looked likely to snatch their first title on goal difference as they led Hearts 2-0. Record crowd at Celtic Park for the game of 16000! Very proud of them.
  • Report: Brighton trying to push through a deal for 16-year-old Celtic centre-back Ronan Ferns.
  • Report: Exploring possibility of bringing 6ft 5 Dutch centre-back Xavier Mbuyamba to Celtic.
  • Celtic signed 15 year old prospect Filip Skorb. Apparently Leeds and Newcastle were also after him.
  • Mass held at St Mary’s in the Calton, the birthplace of Celtic, at 10am. Then at 11am, a wreath-laying service at the Famine Memorial statue in the grounds of the church.
  • European Cup: Man City defeat Real Madrid 4-0 to make European Cup final v Inter Milan. Is this a turning point with petrodollars now the deciding factor on the hold of the game? Even the old rich benefactors (e.g. Berlusconi) haven’t deep enough pockets.
  • Celtic have extended Scott Bain’s contract for another 3 years! He’s now 31 so likely his last long-term contract with Celtic.
  • Sevco confirmed that a “maximum” of 800 away tickets will be made available to Celtic fans at Ibrox next season but revealed that discussions are planned over a possible return to larger allocations in future.
  • Albion Rovers are relegated to the Lowland League, ending 120 years of Scottish League football in Coatbridge (for now). Spartans will take their place in League Two, and Edinburgh has four league clubs for the first time since 1949. Sad day as Celtic have such long incredible links to the club, Coatbridge being a centre of the Scottish Irish community in Scotland (esp Lanarkshire). Jock Stein played for them too.

Summary

“The heavyweight champion of the world doesn’t have to win every round. But he holds the belt. We hold the belt.”
Ange Postecoglou

(joebloggscity of thecelticwiki)

Not exactly the most convincing display by Celtic with the defence very suspect. Iwata was a surprise starter in defence stepping in place of Kobayashi who had a tough run last week. St Mirren played an attacking game and after a very early goal, they kept on top of much of the match.

Celtic fought hard and had to come from behind twice to take a point form the game. St Mirren in many ways deserved the win and can feel unfortunate not to have converted more chances. Curtis the main man for St Mirren today.

Celtic saved by goals Kyogo and McGregor, but there were other opportunities. Having the title already in the bag has led to a dip in form, but also the loss of CCV and Johnston is being felt.

This match kind of demonstrates why Celtic didn’t send CCV away for surgery earlier!

Better to see weaknesses now and work on them rather than see them too late when the league restarts next season. Sone players not helping their cases for a place.

With two league games next week to wrap up the season and then a cup final, at least we hope for better for the paying punter attending.

BiscuitTim of KDS:

That was really disappointing

Flat slow and square – where was the urgency ?

Did ange leave the subs to later because he wanted the people on the park to dig themselves out of the hole they’d dug?

The drop off from AJ to Ralston is massive

Our set pieces are rotten

Corners wasted and that free kick from Haksa ? Wtaf?

If Iwata played CH in Japan I’m
Guessing it worked because he played against folk the same size as him?

Too many scared to shoot today as well

I know the league is won but I’m not really feeling that a lot of what we saw today was excusable

Was worse than last week in parts

Kyogo’s goal was a belter mind

magnum121 of KDS:

Got lucky. We should have lost that and couldn’t complain if we had. Defence is hopeless without CCV and we miss Johnston’s energy. Curtis Main is a poor mans BBJ and is effective if you show weakness. We showed weakness today. Said it after Ipox – we need to strengthen right down the spine of the team. Got a lot of time for Joe Hart, I think he is a big presence in that team, but he was already in the Bahamas today.

We might have taken our foot off the gas, but we can’t take our eye off the ball with a possible treble at stake. Performances like that are just unacceptable, even though the title is won. Its unfair to criticise a team that’s already done its business, but the drop in intensity is clearly evident.

Callum McGregor rescues point for Celtic from dramatic draw with St Mirren
Story by Ronnie Esplin • 4h ago

Captain Callum McGregor rescued Celtic with a late leveller as the Hoops twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with St Mirren in a pulsating encounter at Parkhead.

Buddies boss Stephen Robinson had promised to have a go at the cinch Premiership champions and striker Curtis Main gave the visitors a shock lead after four minutes.

Hoops attacker Kyogo Furuhashi levelled with a powerful drive in the 15th minute only for Main to restore the visitors’ lead five minutes from the interval.

Main should have added to his tally on three occasions after the break and the Buddies were made to pay when McGregor equalised with nine minutes remaining to avoid a successive league defeat after losing 3-0 to Old Firm rivals Rangers last week.

St Mirren beat Celtic 2-0 last September but had suffered three heavy defeats by the Hoops subsequently, although they were well worth their point on this occasion.

It was Celtic’s first home game since they clinched the title against Hearts at Tynecastle two weeks ago and Greg Taylor, Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda came back in, along with Tomoki Iwata who was playing in a more unfamiliar centre-back role in place of Yuki Kobayashi.

Midfielder Keanu Baccus and defender Thierry Small started for the visitors, who got off to a stunning start.

Following a long clearance from Buddies goalkeeper Trevor Carson, a mix-up between Iwata and right-back Anthony Ralston allowed the ball to drop to Main inside the box and he turned inside the latter before shooting low past keeper Joe Hart.

However, the lead evaporated when midfielder Reo Hatate took a pass from Iwata and slipped in Furuhashi to slam the ball high past Carson from 12 yards for his 31st goal of the season.

Hatate soon thundered a shot just over the bar and midfielder Matt O’Riley’s drive deflected off Baccus and almost sneaked in at the near post before Carson turned it behind for a corner which came to nothing.

Saints passed up a great chance when Hart parried Greg Kiltie’s cross straight to Ryan Strain and he knocked it past a post from just a few yards out.

However, there was even more drama moments later when Main headed into the net from eight yards out after latching on to a Mark O’Hara header as Celtic struggled to clear their lines.

After a long VAR check for offside, referee David Munro confirmed the goal put an unusual sheen on Ange Postecoglou’s half-time team talk.

Three minutes after the restart Strain stood a cross up to the back post and Main leapt highest only to head past a post.

Celtic were rattled again but came back and, in the 54th minute, from Jota’s cross, Maeda lifted the ball over the bar from six yards before Main, again, headed a Strain cross wide at the other end.

Maeda prodded the ball wide from close range before O’Reilly, Hatate and Maeda were replaced by Sead Haksabanovic, Liel Abada and Oh Hyeon-gyu as Postecoglou re-energised his side.

The Paisley side were having to hold on, desperately at times but in a breakaway, Main beat Hart with a drive only to see the ball rebound off a post, with Oh striking the goalframe at the other end seconds later.

With time running out for the home side it was McGregor who came to the rescue when he curled the ball past Carson from the edge of the box to cheers of relief, and the Buddies had to withstand late pressure to emerge with a point.

Ange Postecoglou makes ‘heavyweight champion of world’ comment after questions over St Mirren draw

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou accepted his team have deviated from their core principles following their struggles that required them to twice come from behind to dig out a 2-2 draw with a vibrant St Mirren.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/ange-postecoglou-makes-heavyweight-champion-of-world-comment-after-questions-over-st-mirren-draw-4151117Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou gestures during the 2-2 draw against St Mirren.

Yet, the Australian was careful to place his frustrations over his belief that his players have “come off it” of late, through failing to “fully committed” to their game plan and their defensive press out of possession, in the context of their storming to a second successive title before the drop in levels evident against the Paisley club and in the 3-0 loss to Rangers last week.

“It’s collective responsibility and there’s no hiding from it – it starts with me and then the group,” he said of dip since they confirmed their top flight triumph with a 2-0 victory away to Hearts a fortnight ago. “But, again, these guys are champions. They’ve won the title. When the heavyweight champion of the world lifts the belt, he doesn’t have to have won every round.”

Postecoglou, though, is far from simply accepting over the sub-conscious switch off that often besets a team once they have wrapped up a league success, apotential issue with two remaining cinch Premiership fixtures this week ahead of the Scottish Cup final on June 3 in which they will be seeking to complete a domestic treble.

“That’s probably true [players can switch off],” he said. “But the games are still there. Either you accept that you’re going to struggle for these games or you do something about it. I understand that they’re human beings and we’ve won the title again, which is what the ambition was. But there are still games to be played. I keep telling them every day not to waste a game of their career, when they have a chance to go out and enjoy their football. It’s not enjoyable when you struggle.

“With three games to go, two in the league and a massive game in the cup final, you can’t enjoy it unless you’re fully committed. And the players know that. It’s just a matter of them addressing that. If they don’t address it, they’ll get outcomes we don’t want. The defensive side of the game, we’ve been really poor in the last couple of weeks, not being relentless in our pressing and counter-pressing, which is the basis of our game.

“If we’re really good at that, and we have been unbelievable in that this year, we’re almost impossible to stop. Because we’ll always be a threat with the ball. But we haven’t been as committed to that side of the game. And that’s natural, if you’re talking about relaxing subconsciously. Because when they get the ball they still want to create stuff. It’s what you do when you haven’t got the ball – and we’ve gone off that.”

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson in ‘we deserved to win’ claim following Celtic Park showing

The loss of a late equaliser forced them to settle for 2-2 draw on a day when Curtis Main, after bagging a double, missed two golden opportunities to become the first visiting player to net a hat-trick in the east end of Glasgow since Eric Black did so for Aberdeen 40 years ago. The point keeps alive hopes of leapfrogging Hibs to claim the fifth-plce slot in the cinch Premiership that would likely provide them with European football – their fate now resting on Wednesday’s trip to Aberdeen and a hosting of Rangers on the final day. However, Robinson confessed to mixed emotions over their valiant effort at a ground no Scottish visitor has won within since St Mirren did so in February 2021.

“The boys are happy, they know they played very well, but there is slight frustration, which is rare to come to Celtic Park not to get three points. I think we deserved that,” he said. “Celtic had lots of possession in areas that didn’t hurt us but their quality comes through. They make changes, they change their system, they are very clever. I thought tactically we coped with it really well, yes, there is a frustration but two games to go and we are still right in the race for Europe. If we can get a slot for fifth place… we might be looking for Celtic to do us a favour at some stage. But we would like to be in that position to see what happens.

“I thought Curtis was handful all day, him and Greg Kiltie. And we know we can’t take them off, we know we have no options to bring on but young kids who are very inexperienced. He probably misses the easiest one with the header, he gets good contact so he is frustrated because how many players have scored a hat-trick at Celtic Park? I am proud of his performance and to a man it is very difficult to have any criticism. I said we would come and have a go, we always do.”

Celtic transformed from Ferrari to jalopy in latest misfire

For a team that purports to never stop, Celtic are giving an awfully strong impression of having begun to grind to a halt.

Of course, caveats must be applied over the sluggishness and weariness they displayed against a thoroughly impressive St Mirren brimming with brio. A contrast that resulted in the champions requiring an 81th minute equaliser from Callum McGregor to snatch a 2-2 draw and so prevent the first back-to-back league defeats by any Celtic side in 10 years. With the title bagged a fortinght ago, Ange Postecoglou’s men are essentially marking time until the Scottish Cup final in a fortnight. Their last game of any real significance in what has been an exhilarating campaign courtesy of their treble prospects resting on overcoming Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Hampden. Nothing before that matters, ultimately. Not what befell them with their 3-0 derby loss at Ibrox to Rangers last week, or the encounters away to Hibs in midweek or at home to Aberdeen next weekend with which they will complete their cinch Premiership commitments. And boy is it showing that all roads, and all within their psychological mindset – even if not wittingly – are pointing towards the national stadium on June 3.

The Celtic manager may have made plain post-match that he had no real interest in this out to explain away how unrecognisable his team have become in their past two outings from the one capable of running over the top of domestic opponents with a verve and vivaciousness for nine months of this season. Now, the Ferrari has been transformed into a jalopy, judging by their spluttering and misfiring against Robinson’s men. On the back of similar in Govan. The Paisley side responsible for their only serious breakdown when the championship was live, no less – courtesy of the 2-0 defeat in their own environs last September.

Some of the same elements were at play as in that afternoon as St Mirren, with a real rambunctiousness, set about Celtic. A team who, notably on both occasions, were devoid of their backline lynchpinCameron Carter-Vickers. Across an excruciating first half performance, ithatresulted in their hosts almost appearing whimpering. It was the physical diminishment that proved most evident. Experimenting with Tomoki Iwata as a centre-back following Yuki Kobayashi’s struggles the week before seemed high risk with battering ram Curtis Main his direct opponent. Robinson having the courage to play with a twin strikeforce as Greg Kiltie ably abetted the Englishman in setting about the home defence.

The absence of conviction from Celtic, and the opposite from Main, had an instant impact. Only four minutes were on the clock when a long ball from Trevor Carson led to Iwata and Anthony Ralston getting themselves into a serious frankly. It resulted in the Japanese performer – surprising dropped deep from his normal midfield role – flicking into the path of the St Mirren striker. He then skipped forward and hardly produced a blunderbuss shot on goal, but it was one that Joe Hart, slow to react, allowed to squirm under him.

If there was one element of Celtic that remained in keeping with the season as it has unfolded, it was Kyogo Furuhashi’s finishing prowess. Demonstrated when he was slipped in down the right channel by Reo Hatate on the quarter hour mark and set himself before ripping an unstoppable shot high into the net. The PFA Scotland player of the year’s 31st goal of a stonking campaign did not get his team going. And, as Postecoglou lamented in his instant assessment, his players struggled to produce the oomph that has been their hallmark. Though in not quite those words.

“St Mirren worked hard and did what they had to do,” he said. “We didn’t really control the game as well as we usually do. Mainly because we didn’t work as hard on the defensive side. It is fair to say in the last couple of weeks we’ve gone off that a bit. That doesn’t allow us to be relentless in the way we play. And gives the opportunity for the opposition to get up the park, and gives them a chance to recover. When we are right on it, we keep the opposition under pressure.”

The opposite was true with Curtis restoring the visitors’ one-goal advantage thanks to a 39th minute goal that summed up Celtic’s insipidness and St Mirren’s intent. A long throw-in from Joe Shaughnessy was headed clear by Greg Taylor. Only as far as the defender who strained to return it into the area. Another aimless defensive clearance allowed Mark O’Hara to nodded the ball back into the danger zone, from where Main dinked it in.

Celtic exhibited more drive in the second period, but St Mirren largely kept up their end. And with Ryan Strain beedling down the right like a man possessed, the Australian fashioned two cross that Main should have buried to become the first opposition player to net a hat-trick at Celtic Park since Eric Black did so for Aberdeen 40 years ago. The Englishman will be having nightmares over how he splayed a header wide from a mere five yards only three minutes after the restart. Before, after forcing an error from Iwata, he cracked the bar with an efort in the 79th minute. On that moment, the encounter seemed to turn. Substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu seconds later did the same at the other end but Celtic were not to be denied. Or rather, McGregor was not to be. Exhibiting a clear head and adriotness so little witnessed from his team-mates across the contest, he glided inside from the right and, 20 yards from goal, sweetly curled a low effort into the far post. Robinson considered this Celtic salvage job to be ill-deserved. It probably wasn’t on the overall balance of play. But, as he acknowledged, it said everything about his players’ endeavours that they could even contemplate feeling hard done by as a consequence of falling short of a second victory over the champions this season.

Callum McGregor scored his fifth Celtic goal this season

Champions Celtic avoided a repeat of St Mirren’s 2-1 win in January 2021 as they extended their unbeaten domestic home run to 51 games thanks to captain Callum McGregor’s late equaliser.

The visitors were the last Scottish side to win at Celtic Park and it looked like they might be in for a repeat when Curtis Main scored with foot and head either side of Kyogo Furuhashi’s thunderous finish.

But McGregor’s low, 18-yard drive found the bottom corner to salvage a draw as Celtic go a rare two successive games without a win since retaining the Scottish title.

Meanwhile, the point leaves St Mirren two points behind fifth-top Hibernian, who host Rangers on Sunday, as they look to qualify for European football for the first time since 1987.

Reaction & as it happened

Celtic’s players will have taken the field with a mixture of emotions – celebratory with it being their first home game since retaining the title and with determination to atone for last weekend’s defeat by Rangers.

There was no surprise that Ange Postecoglou brought back stalwarts Kyogo, Daizen Maeda and Greg Taylor, but starting on-loan Yokohama F Marinos midfielder Tomoki Iwata at centre-back in place of Yuki Kobayashi raised a few eyebrows.

Postecoglou pointed out post-match that Iwata had played there before, but he looked rusty in the role as he and Anthony Ralston hesitated going for a long punt from goalkeeper Trevor Carson.

Main, St Mirren’s only fit striker, drove into the home penalty box, turned inside Ralston and sent a low drive through the legs of Iwata and goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Normality seemed to be restored when Reo Hatate threaded a neat ball into the path of Kyogo and the striker thundered his drive into the top far corner past goalkeeper Carson for his 31st goal of the season.

Carson saved twice from Matt O’Riley at the near post and Hatate fired just over, but St Mirren should have already restored the lead as Ryan Strain shot wide from a couple of yards out before Main pounced again.

A VAR check ruled that McGregor was just playing the English striker onside as he headed past Hart from 12 yards.

Main was terrorising the Celtic defence and the striker headed just off target twice as he looked to complete a hat-trick and give St Mirren a two-goal cushion after the break.

Maeda half-volleyed into the side-netting from point-blank range, Main fired against the outside of the far post and Celtic substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu followed suit.

However, McGregor was to have the final say and, instead of another famous win at Celtic Park, St Mirren go five games – and seven on the road – without a victory.

Central concerns for Celtic against brave visitors – analysis

Postecoglou was disappointed with last week’s defeat by Rangers and will be concerned that his side have dipped, not only in terms of results but also performances, since clinching the league title.

He will point out that the rest of the season is hardly meaningless – a domestic treble is within touching distance and Scottish Cup final starting places still up for grabs.

The Celtic manager will therefore be concerned that he has not nailed down who will partner Carl Starfelt in central defence following injury to Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Kobayashi dropped back to the bench after defeat at Ibrox, while his fellow Japanese, Iwata, did not impress as his replacement.

St Mirren were as “brave” and positive as manager Stephen Robinson had asked and will count themselves unlucky to find themselves rank outsiders in the race for Europe.

They now have their highest points tally in a single top-flight campaign in the 21st century.

And, having lost three in a row against Celtic, losing 14 goals and scoring twice, since September’s 2-0 win in Paisley can point to a draw in Glasgow as a further sign of improvement.
What they said

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It was a tough game. St Mirren worked hard as they have all year and that’s why they are what they are.

“We’ve gone off it a little bit the last couple of weeks, particularly the defensive side of the game, and when you do that, it’s very hard then for us to play the football we want to.

“I guarantee 1000% it’s not one player. It’s got nothing to do Cameron Carter-Vickers. We’ve missed Cameron Carter-Vickers before.”

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson: “It’s not often you come to Celtic Park and say you’re disappointed with a point. It shows we’ve come a long way.

“We had some great opportunities and limited Celtic to half chances, which they are always going to create with their quality.

“We are still in the race for Europe with two games to go, which is a fantastic achievement for everybody at this football club.”
