A DOUBLE from Daryl Murphy helped fire a Celtic XI to a convincing 4-1 win over Bohemians in Dublin on Sunday afternoon.

The Irish striker opened his account on home soil with a well-placed shot in the first-half after Gary Hooper had put the Hoops in front.

Richie Towell sealed the result on the hour mark, before Murphy struck his second in the closing minutes with a curling shot from 20 yards.

David Lodola provided some cheer for the home support by netting a consolation goal in the final stages.

With a large chunk of the Celtic squad on international duty, the win over the Irish league leaders was secured with a starting XI consisting of youth and experience.

Teenagers Filip Twardzik and Towell were given a chance to impress alongside the likes ofAnthony Stokes, Hooper, Murphy and Efrain Juarez.

And the unfamiliar Celtic side began strongly, stroking the ball around the Dalymount pitch briskly, but they had to wait until the 14th minute for their first clear opening.

Juarez intercepted a pass from the home side and found Murphy, and his swerving delivery narrowly evaded Hooper at the far post.

Bohs replied at the other end when Stephen Traynor headed Anton Corcoran’s cross over.

The Hoops were dictating proceedings, however. In the 20th minute, Towell drove down the right and Hooper showed neat control to bring the ball down but was robbed when ready to pull the trigger.

And midway through the half, the striker broke the deadlock with a fine individual effort. Collecting the ball 25 yards from goal, he drove at the heart of the Bohs defence andskipped past two challenges before finishing calmly under Chris O’Connor into the corner.

Hooper was looking a real threat any time he received the ball and had a chance to grab a second three minutes later, but he was unable to keep his shot down after Stokes had knocked a cross from Juarez into his path.

Just before the half-hour mark, Murphy doubled the Hoops’ advantage. Twardzik picked out the Irishman in the middle and he had time to chest the ball down and drive powerfully into the corner.

Keith Buckley had a chance to reduce arrears for the Dublin side but was unable to connect with Paddy Madden’s cross from the right.

And Celtic could have added a third before the break when Murphy engineered some space in the box but was unable to keep his short on target.

Lukasz Zaluska had been a virtual spectator in the opening 45 minutes, but was forced into a decent stop when Traynor teed up Mark Quigley from 18 yards.

Captain for the day, Mark Wilson, threatened to add to Celtic’s tally when he fastened on to a loose clearance and got a shot away from 16 yards but O’Connor did well to push his effort wide of the post.

A neat pass then released Hooper inside the area. He turned on to his right foot but failed to hit the target.

The chances continued to flow for Celtic. Towell’s corner was met perfectly by Murphy but his header was turned past by O’Connor.

But the keeper was finally beaten again in the 60th minute. Marc Crosas delivered a wonderful ball into the mix and Dubliner Towell got on the scoresheet in his home city with a close-range header.

With the result now secure, Lennon rang the changes, bringing on Dominic Cervi, James Keatings, Bahrudin Atajic, Islam Feruz and a trialist.

Shortly after, the trialist came close with an accurate drive which shaved the far post. Then a deep cross from the left just missed a lurking Murphy.

Bohs pulled a goal back in the 81st minute through substitute David Lodola after a ricochet fell kindly for him in the box.

But Murphy ensured Celtic finished with a flourish, beating replacement keeper Craig Sexton with a curling effort from20 yards.

It capped off an entertaining afternoon in North Dublin for the supporters. And, although it was only a friendly encounter, Neil Lennon would have been highly satisfied by the opportunity to give so many players a run-out before the Hoops return to SPL duty next Sunday with a trip to Dundee United.

WITH many of his players away on international duty, it’s not been an ideal situation for Neil Lennon in the past 10 days.

However, the Hoops boss used the gap in the domestic calendar to arrange a friendly match last Sunday with Irish champions Bohemians in Dublin.

A Celtic side containing those who had remained behind at Lennoxtown and several youngsters put on an impressive display at Dalymount Park to earn a 4-1 victory. Andthe Celtic bossfelt the fixture had proved useful in a number of areas.

“It was a pleasing performance,” he told the official website in an exclusive interview. “It was professional and we played some good stuff at times, and scored four very good goals, which was very pleasing.

“It can be a long two weeks without any competitive football and sometimes you can lose your focus or switch off a little bit.

“So we were just keeping them up to speed and ticking over. Obviously it gave us a chance to see some of the younger players in action which was beneficial as well.

“To be fair, some of the players who probably haven’t played for the last few weeks like Murph, Mark Wilson, Marc Crosas and Jos Hooiveld – they will all feel the benefit of that, and that's why we took the game as it keeps them up to match speed and sharpness.

“And if you think about the injuries we've had in the last few weeks, we're going to need all the members of the squad over the next few weeks.”
