Summary
McGregor: We want to get Celtic Park rocking
𝙈𝙖𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙯𝙞𝙤 𝙎𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞 𝙤𝙣 𝘾𝙚𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙘 pre match “I think Celtic will be a big danger, they’re the dark horses in the group & play with great intensity, speed & movement.”- “I was surprised how good they are technically. They deserved more vs Feyenoord. I don’t think they deserved to lose.”
“And I always say, these are big belief games. Believe in your qualities, these players, I’ve no doubt, from the first whistle will be ready to give everything to the game.”
Brendan Rodgers pre match
“The supporters were brilliant for us, they drove the team on and I’m just disappointed we couldn’t pick up something from the game.”
Rodgers Rodgers Post-Match
Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · 32m Tough one for Celtic, played reasonably well, boy in front of me was waxing lyrical but I wouldn’t go that far, look very competent passing ball back the way but there’s a notable lack of quality when going forward, they’ll give teams games but can’t see them winning many points.
Joebloggscity: An irony in that after having celebrated a late late winning goal in the weekend just past, we now have been sucker punched to lose to a very very late goal. Little luck as Palma scored what looked like a match winning goal only for it to be rescinded due to a marginal offside via VAR.
On Brendan Rodgers, Credit to him. He set the team out right and the tactics were correct, and all played well. Unfortunate late sucker punch to see us lose when we didn’t deserve to.I’m still happy with the performance and confident that Celtic are going in correct direction.
Chris Sutton @chris_sutton73 · 47m That’s a sore one for Celtic. Missed opportunity… never did enough to win it but losing to a team in all truth on the night who were beatable even at this level was sickening…
E-Tims @ETimsNet · 51m FT #Celtic 1 Lazio 2 Even first half. Celtic dominated second half. By far the better team. Lazio score winner deep in injury time with rare attack. I thought we played some great fitba. More of the same and the results will come
Everything Celtic @aboutceltic · 52m | 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝟭-𝟮 𝗟𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗼 // 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 They were right there for the taking & we’ve come away with nothing. We deserved more but it’s the same story time & time again at this level, long gone are the days of a Celtic Park fortress. Tough one to take.
The Green Lantern of KDS:
I didn’t expect much before the game but that result was gutting. Each player performed to the limits of their abilities, however short that may be for CL standard. One of our European problems is a stubborn refusal to invest properly in the squad. I’m not sure we can ask much more of that squad.
We lack a bit of quality in attack, particularly out wide. The two moments where we clicked properly resulted in the ball going in the net. Again, a bit of extra investment would give us a better chance on winning.
That said, we gave up two easy goals through disorganisation and bad decision making. I feel like I’ve seen the second Lazio goal dozens of times in our European games. We make a mistake, players get sucked towards the ball and an opposition player is in acres do space to score a goal.
When will we get a ref who isn’t determined to give the ‘big’ team decisions? The lack of a VAR check for the punch in Hatate is ridiculous. Some of the soft fouls Lazio won were infuriating. We need to get more streetwise in Europe as a bare minimum.
exiledinstonehaventim of KDS:
I think that Rodgers almost manufactured a result with this group of players is testament to him. Yang was in the side because his defensive qualities are better than Palma when Palma is obviously the better attacking player.
He is trying to shoehorn 16 players of mixed abilities and experience into a side that can produce a result against a very decent side. It is obvious he wanted “quality”. He never got it. I think he has some potentially great players, but I will say the same thing as a million others. Spend on projects but ffs get in players who have been and can live at this level and aren’t learning on the job.
Positives. Obviously well set up and organised. O’Riley a massive plus though has to increase fitness levels to match his ability. Scales, a surprise that he at this level, plaudits for largely managing it. Contrary to some I thought Callum was decent, stats will say he barely misplaced a pass I expect.
Negatives. Hatate looks not quite fit. If we wants or thinks he is next level he needs to bring it. Maeda-cant fault the work rate which is immense. If he had a footballers brain in his body that would be really helpful. He is a big part of the margins-hope Brodge can do something with it.
Quiet Assasin of KDS:
A goalkeeper.
A left back.
A winger to replace Jota.
What did we lack tonight?
A goalkeeper.
A left back.
A winger to replace Jota.
The mentality of that team is shocking in Europe. We might have it to roll over the bums in Scotland but we’re sorely lacking when we play a game that’s against anyone else.
The minute that goal was disallowed the arse fell out of us for a good spell. It looked like people dwelling on the fact that we’d missed our chance instead of just getting back on it again.
Once again the captain was honking for the last phase of that game. Hiding behind their forward players pointing and passing backwards and sideways when he did manage to get it instead of turning and breaking the press. He should have just chopped the boy at their winner. Suddenly he’s got bags of pace and running when we’re 2-1 down.
We’re facing going into matchday 5 on 0 points really. We might as well just take the cones in now and stay home.

Celtic suffer familiar Champions League agonies as VAR and Lazio combine to deliver sickener

Champions League home games seem sent to try, tease and, ultimately, terrorise Celtic.

All the chat about the club seeking to bring to a close 10 years without a win in the competition on their own patch before facing Lazio giving way to a 96th minute winner for the Italian club that earned them a first victory on the road at this level in 20 years.
The Celtic support will wonder if such agonies will ever end, and if they have ever felt as acute as the final seconds of an encounter they dominated in with a strong second half showing. All undone when Cameron Carter-Vickers, on as a 62nd minute substitute for his first action after a near two-month injury lay-off, was caught in possession by Taty Castelianos and the ball found its way to Matteo Guendouzi. His floated cross from the right found blue shirts steaming in at the back post with two few of the green and white variety, with Pedro Rodriguez able to head the ball back and into the net.
A winner hadn’t looked unlikely, but it was Celtic who seemed capable of forcing that. Luis Palma, and the crowd, believing he had bagged it in 81 minutes when he squeezed in a shot. Only for VAR to cut-short celebrations, Daizen Maeda having been offside when making contact with an Alastair Johnston cross before it found its way to the winger.
There was all the usual hopes and idealised scenarios proffered by Rodgers in the pre-match build-up. His team had to harness the crowd’s energy, make the opposition uncomfortable. He stopped short of articulating how an early goal was the very means to achieve both. Little wonder when that would have felt like asking for the earth with such perfect openings proving gold dust for Celtic in the competition in the past 10 years.
Yet, it duly arrived with an 11th minute strike from Kyogo Furuhashi that was franked with the perfection exhibited in Matt O’Riley’s gloriously cushioned wall pass from a ball pinged into him from Daizen Maeda that released Celtic’s talisman in behind the visiting defence. Furuhashi’s contribution from there was hardly shabby either. In that moment, the striker laying to rest all the rot talked about whether he was capable of being clinical at the elite level of the European game with a simple feint to fox keeper Ivan Provedel before slipping it under him.
A first goal in the Champions League craved by the player and a fanbase desperate for him to justify their ranking of him as the club’s best goalscorer since Henrik Larsson, what followed it was a strange period. Both in the stands and on the pitch, those of a Celtic disposition became becalmed. As if anxious that the lead was a too-soon peak.
With the lull Lazio sensed their in, and seized the initiative. Helped by errors creeping into Celtic’s play. It seemed where these elements would lead, though the Italians’ 28th minute equaliser was scruffy central. Matias Vecino didn’t make great contact on a corner, leading to the ball going away from goal, before it was flicked back in by the bounce of Alessio Romagnoli to allow Vecino to beat Joe Hart from close in. The keeper appearing to claw the ball out only for it to become apparent he was behind the line in doing so. It wasn’t to be the final time that the home supporters would have felt their eyes were deceiving them.

Kyogo Furuhashi
Kyogo Furuhashi’s early opener gave Celtic hope of a rare Champions League home win before Lazio hit back
Celtic endured late heartbreak as Pedro’s 95th-minute winner consigned the defending Scottish champions to another Champions League defeat.
Kyogo Furuhashi showed great composure to slide in his first goal in the competition to ignite a rowdy Celtic Park early on.
However, indecision in the home defence was punished midway through the first half as Matias Vecino was afforded space to glance in a header.
Brendan Rodgers’ side thought they had snatched a late winner through Luis Palma only for the video assistant referee (VAR) to intervene, and Celtic’s anguish would grow further as the Italians dramatically struck with just seconds left.
With Atletico Madrid beating Feyenoord 3-2 in Spain, it means Celtic, who have now not won at home in the Champions League for 10 years, sit bottom of Group E with no points after two games before a double-header against the Spaniards.
LIVE: Follow Celtic v Lazio updates & reaction
Nightmarish traffic around Glasgow’s east end meant a fair few fans were not in their seats for kick-off. They missed Celtic motoring to quite a start under the Champions League lights.
Little surprise then when the home side accelerated to just the start their early play deserved. Matt O’Riley’s pass into Kyogo was perfect for the Japanese to hit the ball underneath keeper Ivan Provedel.
The Italians flattered to deceive in the game’s first quarter, but they eventually awoke to peg their hosts back; Vecino’s header creeping agonisingly over the line by a foot or so before Hart clawed it clear.
Both sides exchanged chances before the break, but the visitors should have taken the lead five minutes after the restart. Felipe Anderson raced in on the right side of the box, only to hesitate and harmlessly prod an effort wide.
The bumper home crowd were then nearly celebrating another Celtic goal. Reo Hatate’s low shot from an O’Riley free-kick lay off brought a smart save from Provedel before right-back Alastair Johnston blasted over. You had the sense something was coming.
And in the 81st minute, Celtic Park thought that something had arrived. Palma’s snapshot found the bottom corner with a fine finish , only for a prolonged VAR check to bring wild celebrations to a shuddering halt.
While that felt bad for the home support, things would get worse in the dwindling seconds. The returning Cameron Carter-Vickers was robbed of possession, with Matteo Guendouzi’s perfect cross being nodded back across Hart and into the bottom corner by Pedro.
Player of the match – Luis Alberto
Luis Alberto
He didn’t last the full match but for his first half performance alone, the award goes to the Lazio’s Luis Alberto, who wasn’t at all happy at being subbed off
Frustration the feeling for Celtic – analysis.
The overriding feeling here is one of frustration for Celtic.
They started like a house on fire, got the goal their early energy deserved, then fell out of things for a while to allow Lazio to level. Never outclassed, they matched the Serie A side after the break and thought they had taken three precious Champions League points for the first time in a decade when Palma blasted in.
Denied by VAR, Celtic not only failed to find a winner, they couldn’t keep Lazio out.
More Champions League pain for Celtic, who have a difficult double header with Atletico Madrid in store for them next in this competition. Yet to get off the mark in the group, it’s a real uphill battle for them now to stay in Europe this season.
What’s next?
Celtic host Kilmarnock on Scottish Premiership duty on Saturday (15:00 BST), while their Champions League campaign resumes with Atletico Madrid coming to town on 25 October (20:00).
What the stats say
Celtic are now without a win in their last 11 Champions League home games (D2 L9), failing to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 16 at Celtic Park, with only three sides enduring longer runs without a home win in the competition – FCSB (13, 1996-2013), Lille (13, 2006-2021) and Club Brugge (12, 2016-2020).
Lazio won a Champions League game after conceding the first goal for the first time since October 2000 against Shakhtar Donetsk (5-1).
Lazio are now unbeaten in their last eight Champions League group stage games (W3 D5), their joint-longest run in the competition (including the 2nd group stage) along with their first eight fixtures in the competition in 1999-00 (W5 D3).
Matt O’Riley registered his 20th assist in all competitions since his debut for Celtic in January 2022, more than any other player for the club in that time (Jota next on 19).
Pedro’s winner for Lazio was, at 94 minutes 57 seconds, the fifth-latest winner in a Champions League game since 2003-04.
This game saw four Japanese players start a Champions League game for the first time ever (Reo Hatete, Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda for Celtic and Daichi Kamada for Lazio).

Celtic were undone by a Pedro header on 95 minutes
Celtic host Atletico Madrid in their next Champions League group match on 25 October
Celtic players ran a full gamut of emotions in an agonising Champions League loss to Lazio.
Buoyed by an early breakthrough, there was disappointment in conceding a cheap equaliser. On top for large parts of the second half, elation was quickly followed by deflation when the video assistant referee intervened to rule out what looked like a late winner.
Then the cruellest of twists. Possession conceded near the edge of the box in the fifth of six minutes added on and, as sudden as a Glasgow downpour, the visitors had the ball in the net. Dumbfounded dismay.
And finally, stubborn defiance.
“We still believe,” said Alistair Johnston. “Our minds are still on getting out of this group.”
Lazio hit 95th-minute winner to stun Celtic
‘Devastating’ defeat a lesson for Celtic – Rodgers
It looked like Brendan Rodgers’ side were on their way to a frustrating point, only to be hit by the latest of sucker-punches. Now they prop up Group E with nothing to show from two outings.
Next up is a double-header with Atletico Madrid. The Spaniards have been in two Champions League finals since Celtic last celebrated a home win in the tournament.
By the time Diego Simeone’s star-studded squad show up at Celtic Park in three weeks’ time, a 2-1 win over Ajax will be from a decade ago.
“We need to really dig in and find a way to get some points on the board against Atletico,” added full-back Johnston. “We lose again and the ride is probably done.”
Captain Callum McGregor echoed those thoughts, saying: “The next game is massive now.
“We have to learn quickly. I’ve said it before but it’s about concentration at this level.
“There’s nothing in this group that should scare us. The performance levels have been really good in large spells of both games.
“Tonight we were the team in the ascendancy. With 20 minutes to go it looks like only we are going to win the game. That makes it sore, that you’ve done enough to probably win the game, never mind getting a draw.”
‘This was a huge chance missed’
By the lofty standards of this rarefied competition it appears damaging.
Yes, Lazio qualified as Serie A runners-up and boast a squad full of internationals, but they are the pot three team and form has been shaky this season, with only four teams worse off in the league after seven matches.
This was only a second Champions League away win in 17 attempts for the team from Rome.
“This was a chance, Feyenoord was a missed opportunity as well, but this is a huge one,” said former Scotland forward James McFadden on BBC Sportsound.
“Lazio looked like a team holding on for a draw. There are so many positives for Celtic to take, but how often can you say it?”
Rodgers had said he wanted his team to “start in fifth gear” and they duly obliged, with his forwards a blur of pressing motion.
Lazio were cut open by a slick passing move and Kyogo Furuhashi was celebrating his first Champions League goal after 12 minutes.
Celtic tried to keep their foot on the accelerator but a lapse at a corner allowed Matias Vecino to level.
The hosts were the more menacing side after the interval and only the slightest touch from Daizen Maeda meant a Luis Palma strike was offside.
Substitute Cameron Carter-Vickers, given a hero’s reception on his return from injury, was guilty of losing the ball moments before Pedro’s decisive header.
“I don’t think Celtic are that far away but you cannot play well for 93 minutes, and switch off for two,” was the assessment of the club’s former winger Aiden McGeady.
Johnston, unhappy with his own role in the game’s decisive moment, added: “You’ve got to find that balance when you’re pushing for the winner and feel like you’re on top and not leaving yourself vulnerable at the back.
“We all signed for this club to play in these kind of matches. The margins are so slim. One little slip and these kind of teams punish you.
“A lot of players showed they can play at this level, that they belong. We need to get a little more ruthless in both boxes. We need to find a way to turn those performances into wins.”
