Trivia

  • KO: 15:00, Saturday; Match 8; Celtic TV; Sold-out#
  • Celtic remain on top with 22pts +14GD.
  • CCV back in starting line up after injury. First league start for Palma.
  • Brendan Rodgers 700th game as a manager.
  • Green Brigade annual foodbank collection today. Great efforts over the years. Drop off points at Holywell St, Janefield St East and Celtic Way.
  • Tensions rise heavily in Israel & Middle East after escalations (for discussion off this site in a more appropriate forum);
Green Brigade unfurl a banner in sympathay to Palestine (to be clear, on this site we do NOT take any sides on this sensitive subject)
Post-note: Celtic break silence a few days later on the Palestine banner display with strong statement condemning the Green Brigade, deeming it “entirely inappropriate”. Green Brigade’s statement calls for Palestinian flag display at Atletico Madrid game.
  • Weather: Heavy rain warnings for Scotland. Led to lower attendance today and some matches cancelled in Scotland. Train services suspended in parts of Scotland after amber weather alert for rain and floods. Irony is that it’s 26C in other parts of the UK! Big flooding at Dalmarnock and Bridgeton on the Argyle Line  which prevents @ScotRail  from running via Glasgow Central low-level.
  • International Break again next week!
  • Liam Scales called up for Ireland squad. McGregor & Taylor called up for Scotland squad.
  • Sevco manager Michael Beale sacked last weekend. Interim management are ex players Steven Davis and Alex Rae.  Both dodgy EBT Tax beneficiaries from Rangers before their liquidation. Alex Rae had been working as a part time hearse driver for an undertakers (which seems fitting if not ironic). Once when a youth, he was on Celtic Boys clubs books.
  • Brendan Rodgers tips Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes for the Sevco job.
  • League sponsors Cinch have decided to trigger its third year “break” and leave the SPFL contract two years early. All know it’s due to the protests, legal action and resistance by Sevco as their clubs owners are in businesses that are competitors.
  • Rugby World Cup: Scotland v Ireland tonight in final group game. Key game as Scotland needed to win to progress to KO stages, but Scotland got hammerred 36-14 by Ireland who appear to be peerless at present and favourites for the trophy.
  • Cricket World Cup has begun in India. No Scotland, Ireland, or West Indies.
  • Celtic women’s team: In midweek: Celtic moved to the top of the SWPL table as Colette Cavanagh’s 89th-minute strike delivered victory against reigning champions Glasgow City.
  • Former Rangers player Michael Mols has undergone a major operation, we wish him all the best.

Summary

Everything Celtic:  | 𝘾𝙚𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙂𝙤 𝙎𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝘾𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧 Following a 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock this afternoon we move seven points clear of St Mirren at the top of the table before their match tomorrow. Some really impressive performances today & moved the ball very well.

E-Tims @ETimsNet · 50m FT #Celtic 3 Killie 1 Some brilliant play in today’s win. Flow and rhythm was a joy to watch. Other than 5 min spell after they scored against run of play, Celtic were a joy to watch. Probably the best we’ve played domestically this season. More of the same please

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · 50m Celtic’s best performance of 2023-24, plenty of imagination & two great 1st half goals, second half too many players were just far too greedy, when Kilmarnock came out they showed they’re more than capable of playing, Hatate, Palma, Scales, Taylor & Dennis for Killie were superb. Liam Scales was fantastic this afternoon, offers great balance on the left & there’s a vast improvement in his passing, that’s more down to confidence than ability, he must have had that in his locker, strong in the air & in the tackle, he’s took responsibility superbly well.

‘He’s probably one of the biggest surprises in my career as a coach’ Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers praises Liam Scales after impressive performances
Rodgers on Scales

On whether the Palma goal should have stood:

JoeBloggsCity @joebloggscity · 1h tinhat on, but in the leadup to the second goal, looked possibly offside. VAR should release instantly the images with lines to prove if otherwise. Doesn’t help the case, when it’s a simple objective decision ton make wrt offside.

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland: I’m at the game and only seen it in real time, but the only thing I can think of is the Kilmarnock player deliberately played the ball, and I think that then makes Hatate active, the laws of the game are absolutely stupid though.

@TinternetBampot Palma was passing to Maeda, not Hatate, so in that phase Hatate was not interfering. The Killie player intercepted the pass to Maeda and hit it off Hatate, who by that time had his hands up as he was not seeking to interfere. Came back to Palma, who scored. Correct decision: goal

“It’s very difficult for Rangers to go and compete with a Celtic who are as strong as they are.” BBC’s Michael Stewart insists Sevco fans can’t accept that Celtic ‘are the bigger club’

Celtic reign in the rain: Brendan Rodgers turns personal motivation guru for one player – but it’s not all positive

On a day of unrelenting downpours and flash flooding all around the country, Celtic continue to reign over the rest of Scottish football.

Brendan Rodgers’ men still have a bit to go before they can bridge the gap to Europe’s best in the Champions League but on the home front they remain the undoubted dominant force as they stretched their lead at the top of the Premiership table to seven points. Their only defeat in domestic circles this season was a shock loss to Kilmarnock in the Viaplay Cup and revenge was duly meted out, even if Celtic once more made their supporters temporarily suffer before easing to a victory that ought to have been achieved by a far greater margin.

Reo Hatate was at the heart of everything. A feeling has lingered since the start of the season that the Japanese has yet to fully win over his new manager but he is gradually getting there, with Rodgers guiding him step by step like a personal motivational guru. Hatate scored Celtic’s first goal, had a role in the second scored by Luis Palma, and was denied additional strikes only by some diligent Kilmarnock defending and goalkeeping. He was the outstanding candidate for the man-of-the-match award.

Poor David Watson will be seeing Hatate’s goal in his nightmares after the midfielder latched onto a quick free kick from Callum McGregor, stuck the ball through Watson’s legs then comfortably held him off before driving a shot into the far corner of the net. It all unfolded in an instant and was the perfect showcase for Hatate’s understated brilliance.
David Watson scored his first goal for Kilmarnock.
David Watson scored his first goal for Kilmarnock.

He also had an inadvertent role in Celtic’s second goal that looked to have killed the match as a contest stone dead after 33 minutes. Palma was first to react to Joe Wright’s slack ball forward and attempted to play a pass through to Hatate who stood, arms raised, not wanting the ball for fear he was in an offside position. The ball kindly rolled back to Palma, who lashed it high past Will Dennis and waited to see if VAR would deny him for the second successive match, as it had done against Lazio. This time, however, the goal stood, despite Kilmarnock’s persistent protests that rumbled on beyond the final whistle.

It wasn’t all positive from Hatate, however. He took a tumble in the box with Watson again in close attendance, enough for referee Matthew MacDermid to decide the fall merited a penalty. It looked soft at best and VAR agreed, overturning the award.

A third Celtic goal at that point would have had things done and dusted within the hour but instead it was Kilmarnock who made the most of the reprieve. What could have been a day to forget for Watson soon turned into a memorable one for the teenager as he bashed in his first goal for the club. Rodgers and most of Celtic Park felt there had been a foul in the build-up but the strike stood.

Celtic temporarily wobbled but a third goal eliminated any prospect of Kilmarnock wounding them for a second time this season. Watson was again involved, neglecting to mark Greg Taylor who had the simplest task of tapping in at the back post after Matt O’Riley’s corner had been helped on by Daizen Maeda.

Scales features as Celtic secure fifth Premiership win in a row

CELTIC BOUNCED back from their Champions League disappointment by defeating Kilmarnock 3-1 at home in the cinch Premiership.

Brendan Rodgers’ men looked eager to atone for their midweek loss to Lazio and were two goals ahead at half-time through Reo Hatate and Luis Palma.

David Watson got one back for Kilmarnock midway through the second period before Greg Taylor added a third to send Celtic seven points clear at the top of the table after a fifth consecutive league win.

Rodgers made two changes from the Lazio match. In came Cameron-Carter Vickers and Palma, with Nathaniel Phillips and Hyun-jun Yang starting on the bench, while Irish defender Liam Scales once again featured in the backline.

Kilmarnock also made two changes from their draw with St Mirren. There were starting places for Robbie Deas and Watson who replaced Innes Cameron and the injured Kyle Magennis.

Celtic started on top and had the ball in the net within five minutes but Kyogo Furuhashi had strayed into an offside position before finishing well.

Kilmarnock’s response was a curling effort from Danny Armstrong that arced beyond the far post before former Killie defender Taylor came close with a half-volley.

Celtic moved in front after 22 minutes after great play from Hatate. The Japanese fastened on to a quick free-kick from Callum McGregor, burst past Watson before finishing low in the corner.

Hatate almost came close to doubling his tally with an acrobatic volley that was well saved before Palma stretched Celtic’s lead after 33 minutes.

The winger attempted a pass to Hatate only for the ball to rebound back to the Honduran who took advantage to smash in an unstoppable shot.

Celtic started the second half again on the offensive and Hatate’s run and shot was deflected narrowly wide of goal by Kilmarnock defender Lewis Mayo.

Hatate then thought he had won a penalty after he and Watson tangled at the edge of the Kilmarnock box. Before it could be taken, however, the VAR, David Dickinson, asked referee Matthew MacDermid to have a second look and the decision was overturned.

Hatate was involved in most of Celtic’s promising attacks and only an alert save from William Dennis prevented him from adding a third goal.

Kilmarnock grabbed an unlikely lifeline after 72 minutes. Vassell and Alistair Johnston clashed as they chased down a long ball but play was allowed to go on and Liam Polworth teed up Watson who finished well.

The visitors passed up a good chance to draw level when Stuart Findlay nodded wide from a free-kick and that proved costly when Taylor tucked in Celtic’s third after Daizen Maeda had flicked on Matt O’Riley’s corner.

Maeda was then denied by Dennis after running the length of the pitch, with James Forrest unable to convert the rebound.

Celtic moved seven points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership after eventually seeing off a spirited Kilmarnock.

With second-place St Mirren playing struggling Rangers on Sunday, the leaders knew they could extend the gap going into the international break and shake off the disappointment of the late midweek loss to Lazio.

And they did that with one of their strongest domestic displays of the season, moving to a tally of 22 points from 24 and avenging their Viaplay Cup defeat by Kilmarnock, who remain four points above bottom place.

Reo Hatate waltzed through the visitors’ defence to slip a shot past Will Dennis for the opener and Luis Palma doubled the advantage with a sweet strike following Joe Wright’s error.

David Watson pulled a controversial goal back before the unmarked Greg Taylor sealed all three points in Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers’ 700th game as a manager.

After the disappointment in the Champions League on Wednesday, Celtic were very much back in their comfort zone, laying siege to their opponents with Taylor and Palma’s prowess on the left and Hatate’s intricate work centrally.

Kyogo Furuhashi had a goal disallowed for offside at 0-0 and Hatate was denied a second by Lewis Mayo’s interception in the six-yard box and and later a Dennis save.

The midfielder also thought he had won a penalty only for the video assistant referee to rule Watson’s challenge was legal.

Celtic felt Greg Taylor and Alistair Johnston had been fouled before Danny Armstrong created the chance for Watson to finish on the right but the goal stood.

But it mattered little in the end because of the Taylor effort, before Daizen Maeda and James Forrest threatened a fourth late on.

VAR favours Palma after Lazio heartache – analysis

Palma’s inclusion allowed Celtic to take advantage of a pocket of space whenever he cut inside on the left. Indeed, it was Wright’s wayward pass into that area that led to Palma’s goal, the winger striking after his forward pass was cut out.

The goal was checked by VAR amid suspicion Kyogo was offside but, unlike Wednesday, the decision went in Palma’s favour. The winger had netted as a substitute against the Italians only to eventually be ruled offside.

As well as a dose of good fortune, Kilmarnock needed a strong defensive performance and they were badly caught out at all three goals, the third the most galling with Taylor left free to convert Maeda’s header on at a corner.

And they cannot say they did not have chances. Wright headed an Armstrong free-kick into the ground and over at 2-1 and Vassell was unable to convert a deflected Watson cross late in the contest.
What’s next?

After the international break, Celtic visit Hearts on Sunday, 22 October (14:15 BST) and Kilmarnock host Livingston the previous day (15:00).

Brendan Rodgers lifts lid on special Reo Hatate Celtic coaching session as Japanese shines in win over Kilmarnock

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers revealed how a personal one-to-one coaching clinic with Reo Hatate helped bring out the best in the Japanese midfielder.

Hatate scored Celtic’s first goal in the 3-1 win over Kilmarnock and claimed an inadvertent assist for the second, scored by Luis Palma, in a man-of-the-match performance. Rodgers felt it was the first time that Hatate had “come alive for me” and hoped the player would continue to operate with that conviction.

He said: “I went through things with him the other day. If he wants to get to the highest level, there needs to be more intensity in his game. I took him through clips of his game, all without the ball. If you press the game well you will pass it well. But he took it on board, was very open and produced a fantastic performance today. That’s the level, you can’t switch the engine on and off.

“At the highest level against the best players, you have to turn up every week. That’s the challenge for him. He’s not young, he’s 25, but at that level of intensity, everything else is then natural for him. It’s my job as a coach to help him stay at that level. This was the first game that Reo has come alive for me. He has to press the game and when he is at that level, then he is intense with the ball. He scored a brilliant goal and he was superb.”

The victory sees Celtic stretch their lead at the top to seven points and Rodgers praised his players’ response following the disappointment of the Champions League loss to Lazio. He added: “I’m really pleased with the performance today off the back of the game during the week. We could all touch the pain of that result because our display didn’t merit it. But it’s about how you respond. You grieve for 24 hours, I sensed it from everyone, the players and the supporters. But you need to show strength of mentality to get back to winning again. We showed that today because we switched back to perform well today. The players deserve credit for that.”
