MLE of KDS:
We don’t create good enough goal scoring chances anymore. The intensity of the past couple of seasons appears to have all but gone and the majority of that match was played as if we were already one or two goals up. Those players are good enough to beat the Motherwell players but the way they performed was not.

Our defensive five is seriously undermining the way we play in both an attacking and defensive sense; only one of the five has any kind of positional awareness, only one of them can reliably contribute to build up play (aside from one other one being able to ping the odd decent cross in) and our CBs are so ponderously slow on the ball and moving into advanced positions that any momentum we could generate is gone before the ball gets to the half way line. Clearly there are issue at the top of the field but I genuinely think that the way our deepest players are the biggest issue we have in generating good quality chances.

This time of year always sees one or two performances like that but you don’t expect it the first game after the international break against one of the most out of form teams in the country. If you get two penalties in a game and still can’t win then quite simply you don’t deserve to win

Given our injury situation and the amount of players we had away over the international break today was always going to be tricky if we could not win the game early especially when one looked at the bench we had which did not inspire much confidence.
We should have won by a goal or two but didn’t take a couple of decent chances not to mention yet another failure from a penalty.
Rodgers must know if he is the level of coach he claims to be that McGregor is in the team on his reputation alone because he has been poor all season. Today he needlessly gave away the corner that led to the goal as he yet again lashed out at the ball instead of doing what most proper DM would have done which was be strong enough to back himself to win a challenge if he had to and give away a shy at the very most.
Hart the failed to come and take the ball or make any sort of challenge on the guy who scored as Taylor was just overpowered surprise surprise !
As things stand we are much weaker than we were last season and are still crying out for the power and pace that was identified as being missing for a decent challenge in Europe.
The only way we win the league at a canter will be because the Huns are dire, if they are competent enough to knock off the rest of the dross in the league then we might just might be in trouble.
It will be interesting to see if they win tomorrow or bottle it as Captain Disappointed and Co. Usually do in such situation.
Given that our board only seem interested in staying marginally ahead of the scum then it might not be a bad thing that we are in a real race come January because if we were 10 points clear then we would spend nothing..

Hail Hail History @hailhailhistory · 17h Replying to @Highland__paddy The whole match was bland. We obviously expect teams to sit back and defend but don’t seem to have any strategy to deal with it. Every substitution felt like a random throw of the dice rather than a purposeful change.

@Highland__paddy Deserved all we got out of that game. Managers substitutions beggared belief. Whatever criticism comes the players or managers way are merited. From we we never stop to we start to when we we feel like it and don’t finish it off.

A case of paying the penalty for the Scottish champions, Andrew Smith considers how all is not what it seems for the Celtic faithful on that front as he delves into a number of sidelines.

More penalties than Rangers

The Celtic support’s obsession with the supposed bias of Scottish officialdom towards their Ibrox rivals can send them down rabbit holes…chasing false trails. In playing to the gallery at the club’s AGM last week, chief executive Michael Nicholson stuck his oar in when quipping with his variation on the ‘penalty to Rangers’ mantra that is the linga Franca in Scottish football supporting circles for the Govan club forever appearing to be winning spot-kicks.

Yet, before Celtic’s encounter with the Fir Park men, they had received exactly the same number of penalties in the Premiership this season as Rangers – both having bagged six. Now, after snaring two more against Motherwell, Celtic are out on their own for league penalties received this season. Granted, Rangers’ extraordinary run of 67 league games without conceding a penalty is an anomaly that would only ever raise the suspicions of not just the Celtic faithful but the fans of all other clubs, but there is a quirk even with that measure this season. The Ibrox club’s run to the Viaplay Cup final has witnessed them receive two penalties, but also have two penalties awarded against them. As a result, this season Celtic are the only Scottish top flight club not to have had a spot-kick given against them in the domestic domain.

Board do not hide from Green Brigade

It may have been a mere co-incidence but it isn’t common to see, just over an hour before kick-off, Celtic board members milling around outside the front entrance of the club’s stadium. However, a number of them – including CEO Michael Nicholson and chairman Peter Lawwell – were spotted doing that yesterday. Just as the currently-banned Green Brigade members were beginning to disperse from the area following their ‘day of action’ – which seemed to amount to cheering the team in and giving it tight to Tory-supporting Rod Stewart. Read what you will into Celtic board members choosing to be visible on the same afternoon.

Radical reshape for Lazio?

It won’t happen, but in Tuesday’s Champions League confrontation it could be beneficial for Brendan Rodgers to adopt the strategy that allowed Celtic to nick victory in the Olimpico Stadium when they last faced Lazio there, back in November 2019. The Irishman talks of the importance of being flexible, and demonstrated that in switching to a back three for the closing stages of the 2-2 draw with Atletico Madrid. Well, predecessor Neil Lennon took that approach from the start four years ago as he masterminded Celtic’s only victory on Italian soil.

A 3-5-2 in that Europa League tie led to James Forrest being deployed as right wing-back. Which didn’t hamper his attacking intent as he scored the opening goal on the evening. With Luis Palma suspended and Daizen Maeda injured for the Rome trip, Forrest is expected to come back into contention after missing out on the squad for Motherwell with a niggle.

In this last chance for group stage qualification, a 3-5-2 wouldn’t necessarily be cautious. Not when it would allow Rodgers to partner Kyogo Furuhashi and Oh Hyeon-gyu and so have twin central strike threats. Moreover, selecting Nat Phillips alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales would bring some added height to Celtic team on the small side. It’s a thought…

Celtic may have let more than Motherwell off the hook as their predatory instincts deserted them in the cat and mouse with their visitors.

Their attack-versus-defence 1-1 draw with Stuart Kettlewell’s dogged and defiant side, which revolved around missing the first of two penalties before conceding a 90th-minute equaliser, may see Brendan Rodgers’ team still hold a nine-point lead in the Premiership. Yet, this gives a false impression as Rangers have played two games fewer. And if the Ibrox men win at Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon, then it will be a case of Philippe Clement claiming full points from all league encounters across his first six weeks in Scotland, as his club’s rivals have dribbled away four points in the same period.

A turn of events that would breathe oxygen into the title race, the battle for supremacy will not lack this in the months ahead if Celtic can be smothered of invention when pitted against blanket defending, as Motherwell adopted, and executed impressively. A back five with Calum Butcher sitting in front meant that for all Celtic were able to move their opponents around with quick exchanges of passes, the killer ball and finishing touch to match proved wholly elusive. A misplaced Stephen O’Donnell header that drew a superb leaping save from Liam Kelly was as close as the home side came to snatching a lead in the opening period Celtic dominated.

Motherwell’s rearguard action looked as if it would be undone when the keeper was adjudged to have toppled Oh Hyeon-gyu after he had to react to push as the ball jagged towards him from an inadvertent Bevis Mugabi touch midway through the second 45. But the penalty that resulted – Steven McLean pointing to the spot after being sent to the VAR monitor – allowed Kelly to redeem himself in diving low to his right to thwart Luis Palma, whose mazy, slow-quick-slow run up seemed to be all too clever for the Honduran’s good.

It certainly wasn’t lacking In the 86th minute when David Turnbull expertly rolled into the uncovered left-hand corner of Kelly’s net to seem to ensure no damage would be incurred from Palma’s failed attempt. And then it seem Celtic had been doubly fortunate with the award given – via another VAR screening for McLean – for Butcher’s holding of Mikey Johnston as Liam Scales headed a cross wide. Kettlewell was left “baffled” by the decision in the wake of the referees briefing this week where it was suggested such light contact on a player with no possibility of producing a scoring chance would not necessarily reach the penalty threshold.

Celtic then seemed on course for a win to send them into their Lazio Champions League encounter on Tuesday in the best possible shape. But we should have considered maybe games between the pair are meant to be the stuff of late drama following their Fir Park meeting two months ago settled 2-1 in Celtic’s favour by dint of a 97th-minute winner only 90 seconds after the home team had appeared to have secured a point by equalising a 87th-minute opener.

Jon Obika’s late header snatched an unlikely point for Motherwell at Celtic Park

Brendan Rodgers says “there is no excuse” for his Celtic side drawing in another chaotic encounter with Motherwell as Jon Obika’s dramatic 90th-minute header denied the Scottish Premiership leaders victory.

That late leveller came just four minutes after David Turnbull’s penalty, awarded after a VAR review penalised Calum Butcher for tugging Mikey Johnston’s shirt, looked like it would consign his former club to defeat.

But the visitors, who travelled to Celtic Park without a win in nine games, threw bodies forward and scored with their only second-half effort when Obika headed Blair Spittal’s corner low into the net.

On a frustrating afternoon for Celtic, during which Luis Palma had a penalty saved by the impressive Liam Kelly, Matt O’Riley had the chance to score another stoppage-time winner in the fixture – just as he did in September – but diverted a free header wide with seconds remaining.

“A draw at home always feels like a defeat,” Rodgers told BBC Scotland.

“We’re disappointed. We had enough opportunities to win the game, over 80% possession. We didn’t create as much as we’d like but the chances we had should have been enough.”

The result means Celtic’s lead at the top extends to nine points, but second-placed Rangers have two games in hand.

Motherwell, meanwhile, stay eighth and are now 10 matches without a win, but this late point could prove to be a turning point in their season.

Celtic’s spot-kicks made up half of the four shots on target the hosts managed with their 81% possession as Stuart Kettlewell’s side, inspired by Kelly, made life difficult for the leaders throughout.

O’Riley had a side-foot finish from inside the box parried away by the Scotland keeper, who made a stunning stop to prevent team-mate Stephen O’Donnell heading into his net.

The away side posed their own threat as the first half progressed, O’Donnell having a lob cleared off the line and Harry Paton stinging the palms of Joe Hart.

But their second-half display was all about defensive resilience. Aside from Bevis Mugabi’s clumsy challenge through the back of Oh Hyeon-gyu – which gave away the first penalty – and Butcher’s daft tug on Johnston, Kettlewell’s backline were superb.

All that good work looked certain to be undone, though, when Turnbull rolled his spot kick into the bottom-right corner, but Obika’s glanced header claimed a sensational point and sparked wild scenes among a pocket of away fans as Celtic Park fell silent.

Celtic are now unbeaten in 30 meetings with Motherwell, and 14 games without defeat in the league this term, but this will sting. No doubt about it.

For the league leaders to have more than 80% of the ball, two penalties, and still not come away with three points is disappointing. It was a similar story against St Johnstone earlier in the season.

This result creaks open the door a bit further for a resurgent Rangers, who can reduce the gap to six on Sunday at Aberdeen with a game to spare.

There is now a real possibility of that margin being just three by the next Old Firm derby on 2 January.

For Motherwell, this has to be the start of something. The 10-game winless run they are on is currently the longest in the division – but this result is massive for Kettlewell, whose decision to nudge Butcher into midfield paid off.

With three fixtures against Dundee, Ross County and St Johnstone to come, this simply has to be a launchpad for the Fir Park side to reignite their season.
