Summary
“It was an amazing feeling to score in the 90th minute and to get the three points to top it all off.”
Tonight’s match-winner, Adam Idah
“To score in front of the fans is absolutely amazing and I’m so happy.” Adam Idah
“Hibs made us fight all the way but we showed a strong mentality.” Brendan Rodgers
“Adam Idah is a beautiful human being. Great mentality. I always knew about his qualities, particularly his penalty taking qualities. Strong penalty taking mentality befitting of someone with human traits of the highest mental quality”
Brendan Rodgers
“I said to the players beforehand that, whatever’s gone on before, we now have 14 games left in the season and we have to play with our heart and our soul to give everything to get the results. And the players did that.”
Brendan Rodgers
Ex-Celt & now pundit: Chris Sutton @chris_sutton73
“Massive balls from Adam Idah. Celtic not at their best but a huge three points. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how you win… Hibs were excellent second half and pushed Celtic all the way. Nick Montgomery needs time.”
Phil Gordon @PJG_Sport Important win for Celtic at Easter Road last night and pleased for Adam Idah to prove his doubters wrong with immense composure for second penalty. For me the unsung hero is Tony Ralston. The winner came from his tackle and he has the genuine commitment money can’t buy! #CelticFC
Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland That’s 3 League games now since Celtic came back from the winter break, they’ve managed four goals, two were penalties, and the other two were wild deflections, they aren’t creating anywhere near enough good chances, & ones they actually do make are wasted by terrible finishing. ust seen the second penalty, only seen it in real time before, why does Nick Walsh not award it in the first place? He’s 3 yards from it unobstructed. That’s 3 League games now since Celtic came back from the winter break, they’ve managed four goals, two were penalties, and the other two were wild deflections, they aren’t creating anywhere near enough good chances, & ones they actually do make are wasted by terrible finishing.
Italiabhoy of KDS:
Usually you accept that kind of result with “a win is a win” kind of attitude, but I thought, out of our three league games back, that was our worst performance. And it feels only a matter of time now before we fall behind in the league.
We played well for the first 10 minutes, the last 5 of the regulation 90, and the rest was diabolical.
Only pass marks for me was Idah just for being able to hit not one, but two penalties convincingly. And Ralston, for just getting on with it and showing a bit of dig at the end which won us possession before the second penalty. The rest: varying shades of shampoo:
Hart – falls like a collapsing chimney these days.
Welsh – played like he was concussed before he was concussed.
Bernabei I’d love the find the joker that told this lad he was a left back.
Maeda- good effort, but the compusure and touch of a baby elephant running at speed.
CalMac – someone said he was like Covid-era Broonie. It’s not that bad yet, but he looks like he is really starting to struggle to influence games.
Bernardo – decent player, no steel
MOR – woke up in the last 5 minutes. Will never be an Atleti player on the evidence of last few matches.
Kuhn – totally lost.
Abada – I have sympathy for him, I’m sure things aren’t easy at the moment. But he is a man down. Time perhaps for us to do what Spurs did with Ardiles in ’82, and loan him out till things calm down or he gets his head straight.
Overall, there is an ominous feeling about the club at the moment. Brendan looked pumped up at the end, but he must know how desperate that was.

Before the game I didn’t care how we got it, I just wanted a win .
Hibs were the architects of their own downfall, stupid challenges in the box cost them dearly .
Hopefully this gives the team a lift and gets some of the fans on their side instead of constantly sniping at them
Craig @CraigCelt Celtic have gotten away with one tonight. Make no mistake about it. Rodgers is struggling to get a song out of this team. Things need to change quickly. Well done to Adam Idah who has come in under less than ideal circumstances and had the bottle to take and score both pens.

Celtic narrowly avoid another costly slip up as Adam Idah penalty double earns Brendan Rodgers first win at Hibs

Late spot-kick secures points for Celtic but what does performance say about title race?

There isn’t much left for Brendan Rodgers to achieve in Scottish football but winning at Easter Road can now be ticked off a very short list.
Losing a league title to Rangers is something else the Celtic manager has never done and that might remain the case come the end of this season. But make no mistake, his team will have to improve on what they’ve shown in recent days. In saying that, this result could prove a huge one in relation to their ambitions this season. Instead of jeers from the away end the players, and Rodgers, enjoyed being serenaded. It was so nearly a very different story.
They were reliant on two penalties from new striker Adam Idah at either end of a competitive contest with Hibs, with the winning spot kick conversion coming in the dying moments. Hibs had taken the game to the champions in the second half and equalised with a controlled drive from Dylan Levitt on the hour mark.
Returning Australia internationalist Lewis Miller should have put his Asia Cup frustrations firmly behind him by putting the home side in front with 12 minutes left but his shot went narrowly wide.
Celtic dominated the first half but did so with little penetration save the first of Idah’s pair of penalties. Even then, Hibs might have equalised from a fizzing Jordan Obita cross. They did get back on level terms through Levitt’s shot from the edge of the box after Joe Newell’s free-kick was half-cleared.
Hibs deserved more for their enterprising second-half play. But it was still worth noting the significance of this victory to Rodgers after five attempts here. It did come at a cost, however. Alistair Johnston looked as if he had been knocked out cold in the incident that saw Celtic open the scoring.
The actual head knock that floored him occurred in the fifth minute, with Hibs defender Nectarios Triantis making an ill-judged and somewhat reckless aerial challenge on Johnston as the pair rose for a high ball. Referee Nick Walsh pointed immediately to the spot with the pair of players still lying prone on the pitch.
Triantis, a new loan signing from Sunderland, recovered but Johnston had to be stretchered off. Anthony Ralston replaced the Canadian.
Idah, meanwhile, was handed the ball and tasked with responsibility of scoring so soon into his full debut. The assignment was made more onerous due to the fact he had to wait for nearly five minutes while Johnston received attention. On an already cold night, you could feel his sinews tightening as he assessed the options. Right or left of David Marshall? Straight down the middle? In the event he chose to hit the ball to the ‘keeper’s left and saw it nestle in the net.
As against Aberdeen on Saturday, there was an early goal for the visitors, though this one was not ruled out, and then….well, what, exactly? Probably not enough for the Celtic supporters to feel wildly confident about proclaiming the bookies have got it wrong when it comes to relaying the news that Rangers are now the new favourites for the Scottish title, as at least one did yesterday. But Celtic have at least restored their three-point lead at the top, though their rivals have a game in hand.
Dropping Kyogo Furuhashi for Idah did feel like a bold step from Rodgers, but both players had a huge say in the outcome, the former from the bench.
Newell was adjudged to have tripped Kyogo as he was in the process of shooting in the last minute of regulation time, with Walsh directed to the VAR monitor. The referee confirmed this assessment and the nerveless Idah did the rest, shooting into the opposite side of Marshall’s goal this time.

Adam Idah scored two penalties on his first start for Celtic
Adam Idah completed his penalty double with a 92nd-minute winner as Celtic snatched a dramatic victory over Hibernian to restore their three-point lead at the Scottish Premiership summit.
The on-loan Norwich striker opened the scoring inside 10 minutes on his first start after Nectarios Triantis clashed heads with Alistair Johnston to concede his second spot-kick in as many games.
However, as has so often been the case this season, it appeared Celtic’s profligacy would cost them, as Dylan Levitt spectacularly hauled the home side level with a sensational strike from the edge of the box.
But Idah was again given the opportunity from the penalty spot – against the run of play – as Kyogo Furuhashi was judged to be fouled by Joe Newell inside the box after VAR intervention.
Nick Montgomery’s side threw everything they could at Celtic late on, but ultimately remain in seventh spot and their winless run extends to seven games.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers celebrated a first win at Easter Road at the fifth attempt as his side regained their gap over Rangers, who have a game in hand.
Reaction & as it happened
All you need to know about Hibernian
The latest Celtic news
Rodgers batted away any suggestion pre-match there has been a change in style since he took charge for a second time, instead highlighting the different “level of player” at his disposal.
The visitors’ speedy and slick start was synonymous with the version of Celtic the Northern Irishman insists is still in action. They had the hosts camped into their own box and overpowered in the early stages – the opener never felt far away.
After a debut to forget on Saturday, Hibs’ Triantis experienced more misery after nastily colliding with Johnston in the aftermath of a corner.
The Canada international could not continue and departed on a stretcher as Idah coolly rewarded his manager’s faith in him. He could have had another from a wonderful delivery by Johnston’s replacement, Anthony Ralston, but his first touch just let him down.
It appeared that was also the case for Hibs forward Elie Youan as he ballooned a glorious opportunity high into the Leith sky, but replays showed a brilliant block from Liam Scales.
It took until the 59th minute for Hibs to register their first shot on target, but what a way to do so as Levitt magnificently drilled his side level with a stunning strike.
The champions were on the ropes and rattled, with substitute Myziane Maolida causing havoc. His audacious overhead kick called Joe Hart into a punch before Martin Boyle hit the deck in search of his own penalty, while Lewis Miller’s later effort skimmed inches wide.
It seemed there would only be one winner. But then substitute Kyogo had his say. The Japan international nipped in front of the otherwise impressive Newell to earn his side a second penalty.
Idah, 22, went the other way to his first spot-kick, but the result was the same and he earned Celtic a potentially priceless win.
Player of the match – Alexandro Bernabei (Celtic)
Alexandro Bernabei and Martin Boyle
He didn’t score two penalties and he may have lost possession on a few occasions, but the left-back competed and won the most duels, enjoyed a mountain of dribbling up and down the wing and put in an all-round tireless performance.
Lack of confidence stark in both sides – analysis
Three points, as ever, are ultimately all that matter, especially given Rangers are breathing down their neck, but there was a lot to be left wanting for Celtic following another worrying performance.
As was the case on Saturday, the game should have been killed off early doors. There should have been no need for all the drama that ensued.
But, there is a lack of confidence and creativity in the forward area; and that’s even with a different forward line than the one that ran out at Pittodrie.
In a similar position of lacking confidence, a more comfortable team would have punished Rodgers’ spooked side when the equaliser was scored. Hibs were very much on the up.
Kyogo’s omission caught the eye, but when he came on, even he looked a shadow of his former self, squandering a cracking chance before winning the second penalty.
However, in title races, these are the moments and games that are potentially looked back on. Not the free-flowing, easy-on-the-eye trouncing’s of sides, the gritty and grinded wins against the grain.
The talk will all be about Celtic’s steel in picking up the win, but credit must be given to Hibs. For large parts of the second half, they were far and wide the better side. That’s what will pain the manager, players and fans. It was well within their grasp of winning the game.
The return of Australia internationals Lewis Miller and Martin Boyle was noticeable and will no doubt be a big boost as Hibs look to end this wretched run they are on.
What they said
Hibernian manager Nick Montgomery: “It’s hard to explain, but I am really proud of the boys effort, I thought we were outstanding tonight and it’s really unfortunate. We were the better team and we deserved to win that game of football, but it wasn’t meant to be.
“I cannot fault their commitment or desire, I’m just really disappointed for the boys.”
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “Winning was never going make us champions tonight, but with 14 games to go it’s very important you get the victories.
“First half we had control, but in the second half we didn’t play great, Hibs deserve credit, they pressed on to the game. Too many times we played backwards, but the team showed the mentality of champions.”
What’s next?
Attention turns to the Scottish Cup for both sides. Hibernian head up north to take on Scottish Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday (15:00) while Celtic travel to St Mirren 23 hours later.

Adam Idah showed bottle in scoring that winner last night, it will do his confidence the world of good…
Adam Idah wasn’t exactly welcomed at Celtic with open arms after his loan move from Norwich city late in the transfer window, but after his heroics last night, he will have won over more than a few doubters in the Celtic support.
He may have struggled like most of the side last night, but he did grab our two goals, both from the penalty spot. Our record from spot kicks has been poor of late, dreadful actually, most recently against Ross County when Luis Palma missed twice from the spot. Indeed we’ve missed quite a few this campaign, more than any other side in the league.
But we seemed to have found someone confident and clinical when it comes to taking opportunities from the twelve yard line. Adam tucked away both spot kicks with great confidence and looked very assured. Particularly the winner which was on the 90th minute with so much title pressure riding on it.
That takes great bottle to do so. He showed tremendous courage and made himself a hero for grabbing such a vital goal. He will be feeling good about himself today and so he should, it will do his confidence the world of good. Hopefully he can kick on from here and find the net on a regular basis. It will benefit both the player and the team.
Afterwards he told Celtic TV: “It feels amazing. I’m confident from the spot, i’ve taken penalties my whole career. What a feeling. I’ve always wanted to play for Celtic and i’m so happy to get a couple tonight.”
Imagine theRangers supporters seeing Kyogo’s late effort saved and thinking that they were edging closer to the final whistle only for their pals in VAR to for once actually do the job they are paid handsomely to perform and rightly – for the second time in the game – award Celtic a penalty kick. They must have been sick.
It’s a pity VAR didn’t actually take a look at the two Goldson handballs in the closing stages at Ibrox the night before, because had they done so a penalty would have been the only possible correct outcome. Suppose that’s why they didn’t bother checking. But they’re shouting about us getting two penalties that were both stonewallers.
Brendan Rodgers accepts that the performance was nowhere as good as the result. “That’s important for us. We never got going second half. We made changes to be more offensive and we kept going. Adam stepped up and won us the game. He’s scored penalties before, his mindset is to come here and do very well.
“My honest feeling tonight is we weren’t creative enough, our final ball wasn’t good enough and then we create our own problems. We have to be better and there’s plenty to analyse tonight and improve on. There’s a long way to go, there’s a game on the field and then there’s a mental fight to go on with as well,” the Celtic manager told Celtic TV.
