- Celtic loanee Kwon in the stands for St Mirren, he’s had a very good start at St Mirren so far with a lot of positive feedback so far.
- Brendan Rodgers says Carter–Vickers is a few weeks away from bring back from injury, but sounded quite comfortable with how he’s progressing
- Celtic to host Livingston in Quarter-finals, Sevco play Hibs, Killie v Aberdeen, Morton v M’well.
- Blue cards proposed to be introduced for sin-bins. A player will receive a blue card for cynical fouls or dissent and he will be removed from the pitch for 10 minutes. Rodgers is against both the idea: “As soon as I seen it, I thought, ‘well I work in Scotland, I’m sure they better have a green card as well as a blue one or we might be in trouble. Just don’t complicate it. Just make a decision, whether it’s a red, yellow or no card. We don’t need a blue card up here that’s for sure.”
- Ex Celt Scott Brown’s Ayr Utd lost two nil to Sevco.Scott Brown didn’t get as much of a reaction as he expected at Ibrox, and he has his own idea as to why that might be: “I was expecting a wee bit more but to be fair they were a wee bit scared because I’ve won too much here!”
- UEFA publish prize money for 2022/23 (€ millions)Champions League Man City 134.9Chelsea 95.9Liverpool 84.3Spurs 65.7 Celtic 30.5m, Sevco 21.4m
- Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf has suggested he would be “chairman of Celtic Football Club” if he wasn’t involved in politics. With all due respect, the next thing Celtic don’t need is another unqualified person (i.e. no business or financial acumen) to run the club.
- Adam Idah says he is “loving life in Glasgow” on and off the pitch already after his deadline-day move to Celtic.
- Liel Abada not even in squad today, he’s been off form of late. Brendan Rodgers admits that it has been challenging for Liel Abada, who has come under pressure from his homeland to quit Celtic due to sections of supporters who back Palestine, to produce his best form on the pitch against the backdrop of the conflict in Gaza, with the Celtic manager trying to support the 22-year-old Israel winger and focus his mind on his football.
- American Football: Superbowl Sunday today; SF 49ers v Kansas City Chiefs. Won by Kansas City Chiefs. Their third title in five years.
Summary
“If you’re going to win any competition you have to go through various hurdles and away games.”
Brendan Rodgers
“We are a winning club. When you’ve won consistently over a number of years, people will look to jump on you and bring us down – and bring me down. I am here to win. For sure we will have our day, and have many days going forward. We’ll get our influential players back and the squad will be very strong to the end of the season. We’ll continue to fight. We just have to prove a point to ourselves and our supporters. I think that’s always the best attitude. You are always looking to prove a point.”

E-Tims @ETimsNet FT St M 0 #Celtic 2 A hard fought victory. Well done Celtic. It’s easy to criticise (I’m one of them) but team deserve a helluva lot of credit today. Had to fight for everything today. Stood up tall v physical opponent on poor pitch (like ours!) and did so, while playing some good fitba at times Special praise for keeper & defence. Joe rock solid again. Leading by example. Bar Scales this season, the other 3 defenders are backup players. Most have hardly played any fitba. A big bravo to all of them today Special praise for keeper & defence. Joe rock solid again. Leading by example. Bar Scales this season, the other 3 defenders are backup players. Most have hardly played any fitba. A big bravo to all of them today I sensed a real hint of fight & desire on show today, which you need when form since the break has dipped & performances not to the levels we’d expect. Team has taken a lot of merited criticism. Only fair we award them praise today with so many 1st choice players injured. Bravo
Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · Professional enough performance from Celtic, could’ve had an easier tie & sailed into the next round with no fuss, but I think they’re in a place where they need to be kept on their toes ATM, still nowhere near good enough but it was probably their best since the winter break. When Celtic signed Kühn, a lot of people who I presumed saw him play, were talking about how fast he was, but he doesn’t look anything out of the ordinary in that department. Some of these decisions have been shambolic, no even difficult ones either.
Everything Celtic @aboutceltic · | 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 // 𝗦𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝟬-𝟮 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗰 Job done & through to the next round A poor surface in Paisley however there was only really going to be one winner on the day in the Scottish Cup. B2B wins, let’s keep it going
The Hat @The____Hat Great cup result. Poor half time performance from many in the Celtic twitterati. Take a midfielder out the middle creates an open game but offers opportunity. Contrast with boring 20mins after reverting to 5 in middle. Promise for first time in 2024
Everything Celtic @aboutceltic · 2h | 𝙔𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙮𝙪𝙣-𝙅𝙪𝙣 I thought Yang was a positive for us when he came on this afternoon. Wingers are an area of our side we’ve nobody really holding down their position & it’s one they’ll all be looking to claim. Enjoyed how direct he was, hopefully more to come!
Patrick McGuire @paddimir · 2h Yang finding it difficult against James Brown, what with him being the godfather of Seoul
@bobby__peru Job done. Tough game on a scabby pitch. Defended the penalty box quite well but the amount of defending we had to do is a concern.

St Mirren 0 Celtic 2: Kyogo back in the goals as Rodgers keeps perfect record

Celtic navigated a tricky Scottish Cup tie against a game St Mirren as goals from Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda secured safe passage into the quarter finals for Brendan Rodgers and his men.
The Celtic manager has now won 14 ties on the bounce in this competition, and while his men were made to work for their victory in Paisley in a keenly fought contest, they deserved to progress over the piece.
Here are the talking points from the SMiSA…
KYOGO BACK IN THE GROOVE AS HE STARTS WITH ADAM IDAH
Having linked up well in the brief time they have appeared together on the pitch for Celtic in the last two matches, Brendan Rodgers decided to put both Idah and Kyogo into his starting XI for this one, with the Japanese playing between the Celtic midfield and the St Mirren last line.
It was a ploy that reaped early dividends as Celtic hit the front, rather against the run of play, it has to be said.
St Mirren were on the attack when the ball fell to Celtic captain Callum McGregor, who had his head up in an instant to spring Luis Palma away down the left-hand side. Palma pulled the ball back with a first-time pass to the edge of the area, where Kyogo was arriving to side foot home from the edge of the area.
It was a well worked goal from a Celtic point of view, but on first viewing, it looked as though Saints keeper Zach Hemming could have done better. In fairness to him, the ball rather went through the attempted block of Charles Dunne, leaving Hemming rather unsighted, but it was still a poor goal to concede from the hosts’ point of view.
It was just the fifth goal that Kyogo has scored in 21 games since netting against Atletico Madrid in late October.
As for Idah, he had an entertaining physical tussle with Dunne, but he didn’t quite have his shooting boots on, passing up a couple of opportunities before being replaced by Paulo Bernardo as Rodgers switched to a more conventional set up on the hour.
It will be interesting to see which way he goes when at home to Kilmarnock on Saturday, but his team showed here they now have that extra string to their bow as a viable option.
MAEDA A MIXED BAG BUT PULLS OUT THE GOODS HERE
The Celtic winger is Scottish football’s equivalent of the box of chocolates from the famous Forrest Gump analogy, you just never know what you are going to get.
He rivals Gump for his running prowess too, and when he channels his athleticism in the right manner, he is a hugely effective contributor for Celtic both in term of their press and in attacking transitions.
But he is just as likely to slice a cross or overhit his final ball as he is to provide a moment of composure, and we saw the full repertoire here.
In fairness to Maeda, he did show a cool head and quick reactions to bag Celtic’s second.
Palma again got away down the left and stood up a ball to the back post where Matt O’Riley was arriving to side foot off the face of the bar. The ball shot quickly at Maeda eight yards from goal, who adjusted well to poke the ball home.
SAINTS RUE MISSED CHANCES AS ALEX GOGIC IMPRESSES
Gogic had been a player that seemed to flit around Scottish football doing a job without really pulling up any trees since his early days at Hamilton Accies, and a move to Hibs didn’t really work out for him before he washed up in Paisley.
Saints manager Stephen Robinson has taken him out of the midfield dog of war role that was his previous station and put him at the heart of his back three, and he has flourished into a hugely accomplished performer and key member of his side.
He has never been renowned as too much of a danger to the opposition goal mind you, despite his recent headed goal at Easter Road that must have tasted sweet for the Cypriot international, but he did everything bar score here in the first half.
First, he picked up the scraps from a corner before swivelling and cracking the ball off the face of the bar, before a brilliantly improvised overhead kick effort from the edge of area was superbly saved down low to his right by Joe Hart.
He was impressive for Saints throughout though, and is firmly a key member of Robinson’s side.
HART ROLLING BACK THE YEARS OF LATE
The aforementioned Hart save from Gogic was hugely impressive, and is just the latest in a series of fine stops that the veteran keeper has made in recent games for Celtic.
Much has been made of his apparent decline this season, but he pulled out a massive save at Pittodrie to ensure Celtic got a point, made another at a critical point of the midweek win over Hibs, and was accomplished in his work here too.
As well as the save from Gogic, he dealt admirably with a first half bombardment as St Mirren rained corners in on top of him, staying strong and punching well clear whenever the ball came his way.
Whether his future lies at Celtic or not beyond the summer when his contract expires remains to be seen, but reports of his demise appear to have been exaggerated.
PITCH IMPERFECT
It is often said that if players were given the opportunity of playing on a poor grass pitch or a plastic pitch, they would choose the poor grass one every time. But the pitch at the SMiSA must be close to the borderline.
That may be expected at this time of year, but it appeared particularly dry and bobbly, and players from both sides deserve credit for trying to play some football on it.
Saints are often pegged as being all about direct play and fighting for second balls, but playing on a pitch like this sometimes leaves little option. Both they and Celtic tried to get it down here, and Celtic’s better technical players handled the conditions just a shade better than their opponents.

Holders progress in Scottish Cup to silence doubters as manager explains Abada absence
By Ronnie Esplin
Published 11th Feb 2024, 18:09 GMT
Brendan Rodgers railed against the negative narrative around Celtic and him after reaching the quarter-finals of the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup with a 2-0 win over St Mirren.
Despite sitting three points clear of Old Firm rivals Rangers at the top of the cinch Premiership, the Parkhead boss has come under fire for the Hoops’ style of play this season and also for his recruitment. The holders were shorn of defenders Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Greg Taylor through injury but Japanese duo Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda netted against a spirited home side to earn a home quarter-final tie against Livingston.
Rodgers, who returned to Celtic Park for a second spell in the summer following the departure of Ange Postecoglou to Tottenham, noted that it is now eight wins and a draw in nine games for the Hoops – difficult to construe as any sort of a crisis. He said: “It’s obviously (a narrative that’s) been created outside. But I don’t expect anything less to be honest. We just focus on ourselves.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers gives the thumbs up to his team’s display in Paisley.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers gives the thumbs up to his team’s display in Paisley.
“We just have to prove a point to ourselves and our supporters. I think that’s always the best attitude. You are always looking to prove a point. It’s a part of the world where there is a lot of noise – and this year in particular when it (Celtic’s play) maybe hasn’t been as fluent. We get compared to the squad of last season but one, it’s not the same squad as last season, and two, a lot of those players who were starting last season have not been playing all of this season. But it hasn’t stopped the negativity.
“But I use it in a different way and look logically at it. We’ve missed some important players for long periods and we made some changes in the summer. This is a young group of players here who are giving everything, who are looking to develop and improve. If they keep doing that we’ll keep winning games.”
On Israel winger Liel Abada’s omission from the squad altogether, Rodgers said: “He wasn’t in a right frame of mind. I’ve spoke a lot to Liel and it has been a challenging time for him. I just felt when he came into the game (at Hibs) the other night, it just wasn’t him. So we gave him this chance to have a few days and clear his mind. I’ll have a chat with him again next week, see where he’s at.”
Johnston picked up a head injury in the midweek win over Hibs and Rodgers said: “We’re just waiting to see again on him. A slight fracture on the side. The thinking is we’ll have a look in 10 days to see where he’s at. But it could be 10 days to four weeks. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson was both “proud” and “frustrated” about his side’s performance as they exited the cup. He said: “I’m proud of them, but frustrated at the same time because we had chances and we weren’t clinical enough There has to be credit given to Celtic for the two chances they take, they are clinical, and they defended very, very well in their box. There were two or three blocks that were fantastic, and ultimately they were better in both 18-yard boxes. So, for all the stuff we did in between, they deserved to win the game.”

Kyogo Furuhashi slammed Celtic ahead with a fine strike from just inside the box
Holders Celtic safely negotiated a tricky tie against St Mirren to progress to a Scottish Cup quarter-final at home to Livingston.
On his return to the starting line-up, Kyogo Furuhashi fired Celtic into a first-half lead with a classy goal, despite the hosts starting the stronger in Paisley.
Alex Gogic twice came breathtakingly close to hauling St Mirren level, but their profligacy was punished as Daizen Maeda stabbed in a second to ensure Celtic’s spot in the last eight.
Brendan Rodgers’ flawless record in the Scottish Cup continues, while St Mirren’s long wait for a fourth success in this competition will go on another season.
Reaction & as it happened
St Mirren news, views & analysis
All you need to know about Celtic
Home boss Stephen Robinson stressed the importance of a quick start, given his side were caught cold in the league meeting at the beginning of January.
The hosts dominated early doors, but there was a lingering concern that they had nothing to show for it. Then, in a flash, Kyogo dealt the suspected sucker punch, firing the ball through Charles Dunne’s legs and past unsighted goalkeeper Zach Hemming.
While the Japan international is the main goal threat for Celtic, Gogic is less perceived as the St Mirren one. But it was the Cyprus midfielder who came closest to clawing his side back into the contest.
First, Gogic smashed a shot onto the crossbar after a sensational spin, then he tried an audacious overhead kick. He was inches away from spectacularly drawing his side level, but Joe Hart’s save matched the excellence.
For all the energy, enthusiasm and intensity St Mirren displayed in the first half, they appeared sapped of it all in a tired start to the second. Maeda was the executor with his strong strike finally finding the net after the onrushing Matt O’Riley left the woodwork shaking with his shot.
If their Scottish Cup journey was to be prolonged, Robinson’s side needed a response, and Greg Kiltie should have delivered it. A teasing ball was flashed right in front of him, but the winger failed to throw himself at it and the glorious chance went begging.
Player of the match – Stephen Welsh (Celtic)
Stephen Welsh
Stephen Welsh was solid in defence. He threw himself into everything – quite literally, as he crashed against the post, commanded from the back and enjoyed strides forward as Celtic overcame a potentially troublesome opponent
What they said
St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson: “We had chances, and we didn’t take them. We hit the crossbar, the ball doesn’t break for us, they hit the crossbar and it breaks for them – it’s fine margins.
“We should have defended both goals better, they didn’t cut us open or create clear-cut chances. Celtic have to be given credit for the way they defended. We tested them a lot.
“They deserved to win the game because they defended better in one box and they were clinical in the other.”
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “It was tricky conditions, but I thought we dealt with it well. St Mirren made a good start, we had to be strong, but then we got the goal and we were resolute.
“Second half we managed the game really well, we could have won more convincingly but the second goal calms everything. The players were fantastic and the only thing I would say was we could have scored more goals.”
